I wanted to review this location because the young line cook, who wasn't even responsible for taking care of the customers, went out of his way to make sure that our web order was correct. He was courteous, attentive, and respectful, unlike the older lady responsible for the register and handling customers. In fact, she was curt and dismissive to us and could hardly be bothered to help us. In fact, she was rude to her coworkers in the kitchen area, to the point where she threw up her hands and shook her fists at one of them. It was appalling. The service was slow, our online order said our food would be ready at 729 but we didn't walk out of there until almost 8! I get they were busy and honestly, I wasn't even upset by that. I WAS upset that that lady was so disrespectful to her support staff. I was super impressed with the young man who WAS attentive to us, he could not have been much older than his very early 20's.... The food was as expected- fast food burgers and fries- a little on the cool side when we returned home but not unexpected since we got take out. The shakes are creative and made with real fruit. We arrived at Steak n Shake about 12:30 on Dec 26 2019, we ordered a burger and patty melt with fries and a milk shake. Their were maybe 6 - 8 customers (couples) and of course the drive thru was open. The one and only one we saw waitress took our order soon after arriving, but she also answered the phone, cleaned tables, took orders out to vehicles, and accepted payment. After waiting 20 minutes for our order, we asked her where our order was, she stated it was coming off the grill --five minutes later I asked for the manager and told her we were leaving because of the very long wait. No apologies, explanations, etc. As we were leaving the two gentlemen who were awaiting a long time to pay said it was always this way--terrible customer service. The manager should be fired and they should hire more people as it is obvious they don't have sufficient number of people working. read more

What everyone says is true--the wait times here are crazy. I can expect to spend about 25 minutes AT LEAST in the drive thru when the store is completely empty. I have driven away many times because they say they'll be right with you, but it's followed by ten minutes of radio silence and eventually no response. If you dare to sit inside, the employees will bicker a lot and disappear into the back until you literally have to go looking for them if you want to pay your bill and leave. I could have walked out without paying each and every time I have sat down to eat there, and it gets pretty tempting when you're sitting there for 20 minutes after finishing your food. I never leave reviews, and I'm leaving this one because I LOVE STEAK AND SHAKE, and this is the only one near me, and I want it to be good! I want to go here! We were disgusted with our visit today. First of all, the girl at the window had her mask off of her nose and mouth, it was on her chin, and she didn't even try to fix it as we pulled up, though I was fully masked to protect her. When she opened the window, putrid smells came out, like moldy rags and vomit. Instinct told me to just leave, but foolishly I didn't... We waited a long time for our milk shakes... ok, that can take time. The window girl went to help make them after taking payment, but didn't wash her hands or put on gloves and still didn't put her mask on properly... However she DID pick up our cups with her dirty fingers in the inside!!! Then they got the order wrong, when I told her, she took the shake, poured out part of it, added something in, stired it with a spoon she picked up from the counter and then set back down again (gross!!), put whipped cream on it and gave it back to me... Still no gloves and with her mask on wrong. Every time she opened the window horrible smells came out... We were affraid to drink the shakes, so what was to be a special treat for the kids turned into expensive trash. The second girl I could see through the window had a proper mask on, and gloves but the window girl was totally unsanitary. I don't even have an order number to contact corporate because she never gave me the receipt. She needs training on proper hygiene and mask wearing and she needs to follow proper protocol or her food handlers license needs to be revoked. read more

I'm gonna give this place 4 stars because for what they do they do it very well. I consider this place to be like a gourmet McDonald's. Is it the best ever? Not really. But they do cook everything in order, and the price is definitely right, and the food is hot, not sitting under a lamp getting stale. For the price you really just can't beat it. Have to say everytime i go there is normally not a rude waitress well today there was the rudest person i ever met working there. I asked her nicely if i could speak to manager and she claimed there wasn't one on duty till i demanded i wanted to speak to someone that was the manager and finally she told her and came back and said she was busy and never got back to me so i decided after 20 mins of waiting for food and service i went up to manager and ask for Strawberry Shake and she was nice enough to assist me and make me one. We eat here ALL THE TIME... and we LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE our go to waiter "Wes Wolf" .... however I just had to update after this HORRIFIC experience we had a month ago. Arrived around 9pm on a Friday night by myself and my boyfriend would meet me there... I stood at the "please wait to be seated" sign for a good 8-10 minutes... NOBODY sat me... they looked and walked by but NADA. Then a crowd of 5 high school kids walked in and a guy came rushing up and acted like I was part of the group I told him 2 and he said "Wheres the other person"...like I was lying to him or something... then I was sat in a booth and waited I swear to god 15 minutes.. NOBODY came to my table to ask if I wanted a drink..or to say Hi or anything... finally my BF shows up and maybe 10 minutes later a girl walks by and says "has someone taken your order?" *it was NOT busy either they were standing around* ....too bad our beloved wes wolf wasn't there because this would not have happened. Anyway I asked if they had any cookies left *we go here often enough to know they throw the cookies out at a certain time, i'm usually too late* anyway I let her know that if they dont have cookies for the cookie sundae that I would like a certain milkshake. yada yada we get our food... and then we ask for our milkshakes over and over *she said they were out of cookies* and we FINALLY get them...and they must have been sitting out because they were totally melted and more like a drink than a milkshake.... ...BUT.... oh it gets worse... ...we go up to pay and after waiting a considerable amount of time for someone to cash us out I look over and their on the counter is a case with at least 5 COOKIES .....THE COOKIES. It's kind of hard to believe that this place can be classified in as Fast Food. Also kind of hard to believe that with places like Steak-N Shake and Chick Fil-A located in St. Augustine, that anyone would want to grab fast food anywhere else. Steak-N Shake offers up great food at a great price, although what makes this place great is the service. I didn't even eat in, I went through the drive-thru! The lady who took my order was incredibly kind and attentive, and while I was sitting at the window was nice enough to talk to me, and make sure I had everything I needed. The food here will take a bit longer to make than most other places, but that's because they make it fresh and to your liking. After downing a delicious steak burger- nothing better than a delicious real milk and ice cream milk shake. You can get your standard flavors, but I always go with the large Butterfinger shake. Ground up bits of candy bar in your vanilla ice cream shake- you've got yourself a winner. Plus, as others have mentioned, this place is open late... so do yourself a favor, skip all the other terrible fast food joints in town, and stop in to a great place like Steak-N Shake and leave fat and happy! read more

You know you are going to have a great lunch when the restaurant staff is fighting with each-other in front of you and the other customers. Probably should have turned around at that time and went someplace else. I have been there with the kids in the past but probably the last time at this location. Old, dirty, slow, and basically it is run like there is no management at all, a true free-for-all. It took 45 minutes to get 2 burgers and had to ask for napkins. I Went here with my family today and we ended up walking out. From walking in the place it seemed it had a funny smell But I thought Maybe I was wrong. Floor was dirty tables messy and place was not busy at all. We went to sit down and the hostess wiped The table leaving the booth seats dirty. I wiped them up myself then we ordered,my husband went to the bathroom and came back telling me the bathroom was beyond filthy, smelled horrible and sinks had mold on them. I looked over and seen the grill they are cooking these "burgers" on was just as disgusting. Looked like it had not been cleaned in ages. Their was Build up dirt from top to bottom,and thats the part of the kitchen that is OPEN for customers to see. I could not imagine what the stuff we CANT see looks like. I came here purely by accident...was actually looking for another place, which we found, but then looked across the street and there was "Steak-N-Shake". We have one in NYC but there's always a line up to get in so we figured since we're on vacation, now was good a time to finally try it! Love the 1950's type decor with the checkered floors and black, white and red booths. They have a counter area if you don't want to sit in a booth but we opted for a booth. I got a vanilla, malt shake and a Frisco Melt. Both were delicious!!!! The Frisco Melt is two thin Steakburgers with American and Swiss cheeses, on buttery, grilled sourdough with our sweet 'n tangy Frisco sauce. The Frisco Melt is served with fries and you can add bacon if you'd like. As far as my shake....the only words that come to mind are OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should try this place at least once! I loved it and will go back....when the line up in NYC subsides! read more

We love steak and shake back home in NC and wanted to give it a try on vacation. It was not busy at all and took about 35 mins to get our order. The waitress assumed we wanted a kids menu item when the regular order was only $3.99. The upcharge for everything was crazy. The table next to us had the wrong order and it took 20 more minutes to fix it meanwhile the rest of the table finished eating. Now we are waiting on our milkshakes but with only 5 machines to make them...our order is behind a 15 milkshake order. read more

This place is terrible. I've been to this place 3 times and could see potential (which is why I went back) but just couldn't forgive 3 strikes. The thing that had potential was some of the staff. You can tell that some of them are very hard workers, friendly, and genuinely try. They are the reason this review isn't 1 star. The problem is everything else. The other half is useless. They are short staffed. They're unorganized. The food is never cooked the same way. The building is gross if you look for more then one minute. And they don't care about the customers at all. During one of my visits I was sat down and no one spoke to me for 30 minutes, I am not exaggerating. Finally, one of the hard workers came and asked if I'd been helped. I hadn't even gotten a menu or drink so she apologized, brought me those, and made a point to go get the person who was supposed to be my server. That waitress then proceeded to come to my table, apologize that she didn't know she was responsible for me, and then walk away, never to be seen by me again. Another ten minutes go by and I'm starving so I flag down the hard worker and ask if I can order through her. She apologizes again, takes my order and refills my drink. I was in there just under an hour by the time I finally got my food. The burger was okay, nothing I couldn't get at the Wendy's across the street, and the fries were cold. I liked their portions but that was about it. When I left I made sure to tip the hard worker in cash and asked her if the manager was around. I just wanted to applaud her, as she had been my personal hero while I was there, but then she admitted to me that management was never there because they didn't care and just left the staff to sort themselves out. How long does it take to cook a burger? When I questioned the 30 min the lady made smart comments to us. This restaurant is not clean and the food is terrible. My wife and I went last weekend and I ordered the Portobello 'n Sausage Skillet. The hash browns under the eggs and sausage was burnt, and the sausage was bland with almost no flavor. My wife finished her breakfast and then went to the restroom, but promptly came back completely disgusted at the condition it was in. The last time I went to this Steak and Shake location, I specifically asked for a hamburger that had no onions on it, the server pointed out one had no onions on it or so he said, but when I received my hamburger it was covered in minced onions. I called the server over and showed him this, and he example that he can't tell based on the menu picture. He was not sorry for the mistake and didn't offer to correct the problem for me. I've been to this steak a shake about 10 times and it's always very very slow. The food is always below average and sloppy. We just waited in the drive thru line for 23 minutes and didn't even order. After that long of a wait we just drove off. Yesterday we went to the Epic Theater to see a movie, after we went to have dinner at Steak n' Shake. My family and I have done this on a number of occasions and at different times of the day. The service has been horrible. The restaurant has been seriously understaffed, and not just yesterday either. For example yesterday's visit.... We walk in, it didn't take too long for us to be seated and given our menus. But we sat a very long time before our order was taken. While sitting there, I was watching what was going on in the restaurant. The restaurant was filled with customers. Tables needed to be cleaned, customers waiting to be rung out, customers waiting to be seated, etc... you get my point. There were two servers running the front of the restaurant. They were working as fast and as hard as they could to keep up with it, but lost the battle. Customers were starting to complain and getting restless. Then all of the sudden a manager comes from the back and rings out a few customers and disappears. Another one pokes her head out and disappears. Wow! I don't know what either one of them were doing back there, but It could of not been more important than taking care of customers or helping the employees. There is no way that I would want to work in that kind of stressful environment as an employee. No wonder why it is understaffed! When I worked as a manager or shift manager. Customers always came before my other job duties. If that meant cleaning a table, sweeping the floor, ringing someone out, seating customers.... again you get my point. It took everything I had not to tell the managers what I thought of their managing abilities. Especially after the people next to us was complaining about the server. The manager came to their table and said she was sorry for the server being rude, slow was okay, but rude was not. Her words! Wow! Blame the server for their lack of management. The server was overwhelmed and stressed! Then to make matters worse. The manager asked the grill cook to clean some tables, then he went back on the grill. YAK! That was it for me. Has she ever heard of food contamination! On a good note the food was good. If these managers would of stepped up to help their employees out, everyone in that restaurant would of had a more pleasant time, including the employees. This same complaint will be sent to the owner and to corporate. I am done with this kind of treatment at this restaurant, of a place where I like the food. This steak and shake is much like any other, but I don't know if it was because it was the late night shift or what but the service was horrible. We had a party of 6, so I understand that food takes time, but a steak and shake with a drive through should be pretty quick and efficient. It took nearly 45 minutes for us to get our food. Granted, the food itself wasn't terrible, but it was luke warm which was my only complaint regarding the food. What earned this place 2 Stars was the horrific service. Our server visited us three times. Once to get drink orders, once to take food orders, and once to drop off our food. We never saw her again, when like many patrons, I wanted to order a milkshake near the end of my meal. A couple of our orders (not mine) was missing a few things but it wasn't a huge deal...to remedy that, my friend went up to ask for mayo packets. The server very rudely yelled "what?!? I can't hear you!?" And disrespectfully motioned him to come closer with his hand, with a face and demeanor indicating that helping a customer was the last thing he wanted to do and that my friend seemed to be of the utmost inconvenience. Came in around 1030. Only three other customers in there. The counter had small of coffee spilled on counter. And other counter did not look like it had been wiped. Waitress did not It even try to clean the counter. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and coffee and ad my own cup. Waitress rang my order up but did not let me pay then and did not offer to get my coffee. I waited a few minutes and then had to ask the waitress for my coffee. Waitress grabbed my cup by the rim of the cup(hand around the top) instead of by the handle or bottom of cup. Asked her to grab it by the handle. She proceeded to fill it up and also scratched her face under her nose. Then she came back with my cup and had it by the top of the cup again instead of by the handle. Talked to manager and he offered to pour out coffee and give me more. Also two separate customers had to ask for their receipts at the counter even though there was only one other person and myself in there. I understand people have bad days but it was Just poor customer service/attention to customers and unhealthy handling of drinks. I will probably never go back. read more
