We got some coupons in the mail and decided it would be a fun lunch date. There is plenty of parking around the restaurant. The restaurant is bright and very happy when you enter. We were seated right away in a booth. The waitress was so friendly and fun to talk to. We placed our order and didn't have to wait long at all. Our milkshakes came out in frosted glasses. They were rich and very thick. Our burgers were pretty tasty and the toppings were all fresh. The thin cut fries were hot crisp and addicting. The menu has something for everyone and prices are very reasonable. We ended up getting a free milkshake with the coupon we brought. Great place for a lunch date. read more

I know I'm about to invite hellfire from the heavens (and probably anger the ghost of Roger Ebert) for speaking this sacrilege, but Steak 'n Shake isn't all that great. And this particular restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. My biggest gripe with the famous chain is the burgers themselves. Yes, they're good, but even a double is incredibly small. Most don't even come with lettuce and tomato, though I'm sure it can be added. And no matter what I order, it always tastes the same -- a gelatinous glob of onions and grease glued together by a squishy bun. How do they produce such flaccid burgers and buns from a grill? I have no idea. I would expect a bit of crispness around the edges of the meat and the bread, but so far, that's just an unfounded rumor. I usually order the Wisconsin Buttery, because who doesn't like a burger fried in butter, right? But today I decided to get two burgers -- the Buttery and a Philly cheesesteak. I kid you not, these burgers tasted almost identical. Again, how do they pull this off? No idea. There's magic in that grill, I reckon. I also decided to order the chili cheese fries, and here's where today's problem began. I got my food and parked under a shade tree to eat. The first thing I encountered in the bag was two small bags of oyster crackers. Then I saw a tub of what appeared to be chili or some kind of soup. I took my order back to the cashier, because I thought I had been given the wrong meal. It took me several seconds to understand what she was saying: The contents of the bag were correct. No matter what it looked like, there were fries somewhere beneath all those beans. She moved the burgers around, saying she knew they were correct, because she could smell the peppers. She hastened to make sure I knew she hadn't touched the food itself and thanked me for my niceness in what can only be described as a "bless your heart" tone. If you're not from the South, let me translate: Having one's heart blessed in the South is NOT a good thing, though it might be advisable if one plans to eat the Wisconsin Buttery very often. Suitably chastened, I carried my correct order back to my tree to eat. I ate the burgers, then prepared to dig into the fries. And here was problem number two: There were no utensils. Normally, you can enjoy chili cheese fries without a fork, but I never even saw a fry. When I finally fished one out, the poor, chili-logged thing broke off in my hand and sank to a swift, merciful Death by Drowning. So I happily drank my milkshake, which Steak 'n Shake actually gets right most of the time. The dark chocolate shake wasn't all that impressive since it was drowning in whipped cream, but the chocolate covered strawberry shake is quite good and includes real chunks of strawberries. But the biggest problem with this location is the drive-thru clerk. I've had the same young girl twice, and the only thing that keeps her from being deemed rude is her completely lackluster delivery. If she speaks at all, I haven't heard her voice. The first time, I annoyed her by wanting a shake they have -- the chocolate covered strawberry -- but not knowing what it was called because it's not listed on the drive-thru menu. She gave me a spoon and no napkins or straw, which wasn't helpful since I wanted to drink it as I drove. This time, I'm not sure what I did to irritate her. I'm sure it's not fun to work the window all day, but a spark of personality and pleasantry makes the transaction a bit more amiable. So, this is my last night in St. Augustine, but I'll return to the city one day. As for this Steak 'n Shake, I doubt they'll make my to-do list next time. Sorry, Mr. Ebert. They can't all be winners. If you want to eat here, check your order carefully and bring a life preserver. read more

We came here to get an order to go, just to place our order took a really long time and that was not very people here. Then they forgot one of our french fries and didn't make any of our shakes. So now we get to eat cold food. As I'm waiting for our shakes. Also forgot my bottle of water. The manager looks like a crab. And it's not very nice to her employees. We got in the drive thru line at 11:30 and they never even came to the intercom to take out order even though they closed at midnight. We are highly upset for my pregnant fiancé wanted a Garlic double steak burger and now I have to go home with a very upset pregnant woman. I fear for my life. Just awful! If I could leave no stars I would! This was my second time coming. We went a month ago and it was crappy but we thought perhaps it just just a bad time. But today was the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. The service was Awful. They weren't even busy but we waited 10mins to be seated when there was tables open. The waited 5 mins before she came and asked if we wanted drinks. They got are order wrong and then when we told them they became rude. The slammed the food on the table and didn't come back. We had to hunt down napkins and anything we needed ourselves. The cups and the silverware were both dirty. Are food was hanging off the plates and just thrown together. The bathroom was gross! Between waiting 15+ min (on average) and orders being completely wrong (then giving that order to the person behind us who's it probably was to begin with, which all in itself is gross) then they tried to make it right and STILL forgot the hamburgers. This stake n shake location is the only place they could film "the twilight zone" because there must be a portal in the back where all the employees disappear to. The cow that provides the milkshakes must also be back there with how long the service takes. We sat, we waited, we watched three families leave because no one served them. The only saving grace of this location was the food. It was ~okay~. Don't fear the smell at the front door, it will remind you of days past in a McDonald's ball pit. read more

Ordered cheese fries for the table, four burgers and four shakes. We received water 10 minutes after ordering. Then, 5 minutes later our fries were given to another table. 5 more minutes later we got the fries. Our burgers arrived a few minutes later, which was good! Great waiter, and the other waitresses were very great as well. The young female Caucasian cook and reported manager was intolerable. I am not sure how the other employees, including the other kitchen staff work with her. She yelled at the entire staff several times. Managed to get into it with every other employee there. Threw some cooking utensils, refused to continue cooking at one point while standing with her arms crossed and her gloves touching her clothing, yelled oh my god then wiped her face and hair with her gloves then continued cooking. She made it very uncomfortable for the customer to be eating in the dining area and the staff working with her. The last time that I had something from a Steak & Shake, it must've been at least 6 years ago, and before that, must've been 5 years ago. Burgers = good. Fries = thin and delicious. Service = friendly. Decor = cliche diner look. Black and white checkered walls/floors, red neon light trim, silver and red barstools, and red booths. Prices = cheap. I got a hamburger and fries for about $3.29, before taxes! We came back for the drive-thru for their happy hour (1/2 priced shakes and beverages). A Health milkshake for $1.86! (HH is 2 pm to 4 pm, and 2 am to 4 am). Oh yeah, it's open 24 hours! read more

Normally I like Steak and Shake, but this one was a mess. It was 2:30 in the afternoon, so it wasn't like they were slammed. However, it took a while to get seated, and then the service was abysmal. I should have known something was wrong, as when I was waiting, a customer sent back a burger, opening it up and saying, "this is disgusting". One of our two waitresses had this "I've given up" demeanor. The other waitress was pushy. She couldn't wait to get us in and out, even though they weren't that busy. She first wanted us to order before handing us the menu, then after handing us the menu, she kept asking if we were ready every minute. My wife ordered the "grilled cheese", and she got two pieces of grilled bread with cold cheese! She sent it back, and the waitress was back in 1 minute with what clearly was the same sandwich after 30 seconds in the microwave. I could have made my wife a better grilled cheese at home! My burger was fine, but if they can't get that right, they should be shut down. We couldn't wait to get out of there! I still love Steak and Shake overall, but for this location - get your act together! Live up to the good "Steak and Shake" name! My 1 star rating is based solely on this experience. i had a simple ass order of ONE small milkshake. Yet they still messed it up as they always do. Gave me the wrong flavor too. they gave me NUTELLA not my birthday cake (the nutella was basically like water too) and they also charged me $9 for a size SMALL MILKSHAKE. No receipt either to be able to prove they basically stole my money and i could get a refund at the very least. VERY bad experience will not be coming back to this scum of a restaurant again. We stopped by here on our way to Home Depot. We ordered 2 burgers with a chocolate shake. The shake came out in 5 minutes but definitely did not taste like chocolate. It tasted like regret - no chocolate, not even a hint of vanilla. Fast forward 30 minutes and still no food!!!!! Shake was now milk- saw our server wipe off clean tables but left dirty ones. The whole place smelled like dirty grease- not like a diner where it smells like food cooking. Overall - yuck. Paid for my shake and left after watching people who came in after us get served first. We stopped here on the way back to GA. We downloaded the App. Through the app, we were able to order ahead. We also paid in advance. All we had to do was go through the drive thru and pick up our food. It was ready exactly when the app said it would be ready (about 13 minutes after we placed it order). We were a little late picking it up (by about 8 minutes). The manager out our milkshake in the freezer so that it would not melt- it was JUST right! The food was perfectly cooked and it was still fresh and warm when we picked it up. It was all wrapped and packaged nicely so that we could rummage through the bag and eat while in the car. If I could have given a zero star I would. We arrived at this Steak 'n Shake and there was no cars in the parking lot and nobody in the drive-thru lane either but across the street was a Chic Fil a. When we pulled up to the window an employee said just a minute, that turned into ten minutes with me saying hello several times because I thought they forgot us, we ordered one meal for one family member only, we pulled up to the window and waited ten more minutes, after a while we notice one employee dropping the fries and thought why would they wait this long to cook the fries. We noticed that every vehicle that arrived at Chic-Gil-a arrived, ordered and received their food while we still wait for one order. Omg. Went to this restaurant earlier this evening and i have to say it was some of the worst food ive had in a long time. All our burgers were burnt and dry as cardboard.
