I think Chicago and Chili cheese slaw were my favorites. The proportions are perfect because you get toppings in every bite, but it's also not overflowing and spilling everywhere. However, the star of the show where the fresh cut fries. Best fries I've had from a hotdog stand. They were fresh, but they must be double fried. Because I heard him drop them in the fryer and they were ready only five minutes later. I added a little bit more salt, but they probably didn't need it. The chili cheese fries were also really good. It was 1 pm on a rainy May 2nd afternoon. We had 5 pm dinner reservations with a group for a fancy dinner and needed a quick snack to hold us over. We are visiting from out of town and had been on the trolley for 90 minutes. The 5 star reviews were the hook. Plus we love hot dogs in general. I like this walk up service hot dog place. It's been here for years. The fries are so addicting that you can't eat just one order. I really like the brat dog with mustard and spicy mustard. I have only had the chance to go here a couple times in recent years but every time I have a hotdog elsewhere, I think of this place because of how flavorful their specialty hotdogs are. My recent trip here I got the one hot dog combo because I wasn't hungry enough for the two hot dogs, and it was more than enough food to hold me over for quite some time. I opted for the salsa dog and with the combo, you also get a massive helping of fries that are hand cut there, as well as a nice sized soda. The salsa dog is covered with salsa, jalapenos and some amazing cheese sauce. The hot dog was a perfect crunch from the shell when you bite into it and all of the toppings blend perfectly together as well. The fries were also cooked to perfection and the soda tasted amazing as well, making me think they added something to it because it tasted much better than other fountain drinks I have had at other places. At the price tag of roughly seven dollars for all that food, it is impossible to find anywhere else that has this much food for the price, let alone the food being good for that price as well! Hazel's Hot Dogs in Saint Augustine, Florida is an excellent representation of a hole in the wall hot dog joint serving large all beef hot dogs (I would guess six to a pound) with a variety of toppings and hand cut french fries. I chose their "spicy dog" and a "datil dog", two spicy undertakings and they gave me a bit of chili on the side to see if that would be an appropriate topping. Let's start off with the negative, their chili was bland and uninspired. Plus it contained beans. certainly not acceptable as a chili to top a hot dog. On a positive, the hot dogs sans the chili were great. The datil dog, with sauerkraut and datil pepper mustard was truly a delectable dog that paid homage to the datil pepper, a pepper indigenous to the Saint Augustine area.
