My husband and I are HUGE foodies / home cooks, so the bar was very high. Coming from a Texan family, we landed on BBQ but nothing had that "wow" factor... Then I found Smokey Jones and OH MY GOSH. Smokey Jones is not your average BBQ. They are craft BBQ (fire wood only) and have pop ups with a unique rotating menu. Most important of all, this isn't a business but a passion and a labor of love. Russ and Viv put their heart and soul into their food and you will not find a caterer who cares more. Honestly the food was so good that these two kind of stole our thunder on the big day - people were talking more about the food than about us! Every family member came over to say congrats and ask where we found Smokey Jones. Not only was this the best wedding catering anyone at the party has ever had but people said it was some of the best BBQ they've ever had (including the Texan BBQ aficionados). Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't say thank you for going above and beyond to make not only incredible food but a beautiful set up. Mother Fletcher's (who now accepts credit cards, btw) sometimes parks behind the EverBank buiding in Riverside during weekday lunches (11am-1:30pm). They're based out of St. Augustine so you'll probably encounter them there most often. The overlords at work made a mistake and gave me a day off, so I was actually able to catch them in Riverside. I usually go with a Datil Dog (that spicy datil mustard is a must!) or Spicy Dog paired with a Chicago Dog, and it's never let me down. And whatever you do, don't skip the hand-cut fries. They're perfectly crisp, absolutely delicious, and you'll wish you'd ordered an extra serving because sharing won't be an option. Hazel's is one of St. Augustine's best-kept culinary gems, especially considering how few truly great hot dog stands there are in Northeast Florida.
