This place is EVERYTHING!! From the food to the service, to the ambiance 10/10!! Highly recommend the blue crab deviled eggs and grilled oysters as a starter.. I promise you won't be disappointed! I also noticed a lot of people ordering the massive monster prawn app, so I'll definitely be ordering that next time. The ax handle ribeye was RIDICULOUS!! I've never seen a steak so big. The crust was super flavorful and honestly my favorite part. The ax handles range from 38 oz to 65 oz and you get to choose your weight based on the availability for the night... and let me tell you, they go fast! I went with the 41 oz and it was the perfect size for 2-3 people. It's also worth mentioning they take about 30-40 mins to cook, so I recommend putting in your order ASAP. For the sides we went with the pan fried mashed potatoes and grilled broccoli, and both were perfect accompaniments to the meat. Tetiana our waitress was lovely. She was super attentive and we almost went with all of her suggestions. The chef even stopped by to check on us which was a nice touch. Good food but terrible service. My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate his birthday. First, we had to wait over 30 minutes for our table despite having a reservation at 8:00. After we sat down, we ordered the biscuits. My boyfriend let our server know that he had an egg allergy and the server alerted us that he would double check with the kitchen for him. He let us know that the biscuits were egg free and we should be safe to enjoy them. What he failed to mention was that the pimento cheese that the biscuits came with also had egg in them. Midway through our meal, my boyfriend started feeling nauseous. He alerted the server that he was having a reaction and asked if he could double check that nothing had eggs in it. It took the server 15 minutes to get back to us and finally admitted it was in the cheese. The worst part of this all was that the server DID NOT CARE. He did not apologize or ask my boyfriend if he was okay. The item was not taken off the check and we didn't expect it to be but an apology would have been appreciated .... Anyway my boyfriend spent the rest of his night sick in bed. Bummer. read more

After giving St. Anselm another chance, we were satisfied with the results. To start, I think the restaurant was well staffed with attentive servers, hosts, food runners, and sommeliers. It is a well managed establishment with managers who care about the success of the restaurant and customer satisfaction. I believe this is a great mark of a spot that seeks to continue deserving the attention it attracts. We sat inside this time, as the weather decided to unleash misery. It is certainly cozy and well curated. I would say as the restaurant is fairly large and has a good amount of covers, it is naturally quite loud. I suppose the noise really can't be controlled unless they reduced the number of diners which would not be economically advantageous. When dining indoors, I think it is good to accept the concept it will be fairly noisy if you dine at peak hours. Onto the food, I still stand by my original opinion that the appetizers and sides are impeccable. The biscuits, grilled veggies, bacon, and creamed spinach were all divine. For our entrees, we had the Bobo chicken and butchers cut steak. They were both delicious and flavorful. Our wine pairing was equally as lovely. Overall, I will remember St. Anselm for having great service, efficient management, and appetizers that are amazing. You hear so much about this place online and we got lucky and found time to make it over here. We were easily able to secure an 11:30 AM Saturday brunch reservation the night before. Lot of seating both inside and out (sort of little house like structures for each table). We opted for inside to prevent sweating. The dining room was pretty large and we loved the decoration. Wish we could've sat in the booth with the curtain. We needed to try a bunch of stuff so we got the Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread, Buttermilk Biscuits, Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Steak & Eggs, and the Thick Cut Heritage Bacon. For drinks we got the Gin Cocktail, Vodka Cocktail, Limoncello Spritz, and the Light & Herby Mocktail. The biscuits and monkey bread came out first. The biscuits may be the best I've ever had from a restaurant. Very flaky, super buttery, and a little crispy on the top. The pimento on the side really took it over the top for me. The monkey bread was very good, very gooey and also great to share. The pancakes, bacon, and steak & eggs took a second to come out but that was probably due to the restaurant starting to get packed about 30-45 minutes in. The steak was a perfect medium rare, had a good crust to it, and was very flavorful. The crispy potatoes were perfect but wish it came with a dip and the eggs were just runny enough for me. My girlfriend loved her pancakes but there was no way she could finish and turned into a meal for later (most of this meal did). The bacon was as advertised, super thick, and was almost like an Easter ham. The drinks were solid, no complaints. My favorite was the vodka cocktail, refreshing and bright. We selected here for a family birthday dinner. Reservations were easy. The host staff were very friendly. We were able to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink while we waited for the rest of our party. My boyfriend and I came here after this place had been sitting in our bookmarks for a while. We were pleased that they were doing contact tracing; we gave our names and phone numbers (and got our temperatures taken) prior to entering the restaurant so that they could contact us if the virus were to have been confirmed as active there. We ordered the blue crab deviled eggs, which were excellent. We also ordered the buttermilk biscuits with pecorino. While the biscuits were good, the pecorino tasted more like cheddar than anything. Four biscuits with the pecorino were not worth $11 in my opinion. We also got the Whole Branzino with orange dill vinaigrette as an entree to share, along with crispy smashed potatoes and charred root vegetables as sides. The branzino seemed a bit undercooked, as it was a little gelatinous in some places. I would have preferred more of the orange relish sauce as well. The sides were pretty sizable and could be shared between two people, but in my opinion, it's not worth $17 for the two sides. The crispy smashed potatoes were seasoned nicely (though I wouldn't call them crispy, and they were barely smashed), and the apple cider bacon vinaigrette on the root vegetables was tasty. My boyfriend ordered a beer, and it came in a small mug--it's a 9 oz pour. I ordered a coke, and they gave me a bottle--an 8oz bottle--and it was $4. Not sure if these are just COVID surge prices, DC prices, or both. First, we got here late. I called at the 15 min late mark to let them know we were a few minutes away and they were very nice about it. Actually told us to take our time and that our table would be ready when we made it. Once we came through the doors, we sat right away. The restaurant itself is fun and we all really liked the vibe of the place. It really feels like a comfy, cozy place that is going to serve you good food. This isn't a complaint but it's funny how different states health departments are different. The plates are hilarious but each one we got was chipped in some way. This would not fly in Vegas so it made me feel a bit weird even though I know it's fine. Our server was great. He gave us a good rundown of how things work and was quick and efficient. He was also super friendly but not in a pestering way and I very much appreciate that. The food was pretty darn good. The biscuits and pimento cheese are to die for. I mean I'd like to stage here just to peep that recipe. 3 of 4 of us at the table were chefs and we had a good conversation about how we think they are made. Another highlight was the ribeye. Great flavor and cooked really well. The young bobo chicken... *chef's kiss!* The pan fried mash potatoes are pretty darn good too. I was so excited to eat at St. Anselm yesterday for brunch. My first time there. The food was okay. I had the eggs your way with egg whites, toast, bacon and fingerling potatoes. The toast was as hard as a brick. And I asked for jelly to go with it. To my surprise jelly is a $2.50 up charge. I didn't know we had to pay for condiments for one slice of toast. The rest of the food was fine. The crab deviled eggs were so good. And we tried the monkey bread which my friend loved. She ordered the Denver omelette with extra cheddar and a biscuit as a side dish. For some reason it didn't come with the potatoes so we had to request those again. I'm willing to give them another try but only for dinner. Better brunch options elsewhere. Oh and I got stung by a bee. Be careful in those booths on the sidewalk please. So I booked a brunch reservation with a friend a month ago. The interior was a hip mixture of exposed brick, wood, and stuffed taxidermy. But enough about the decor, we need to get to the food. The biscuits. Why didn't anybody tell me about these biscuits? How did they get them so flaky? How did they get it perfectly buttered inside? These are questions I don't have the answer to. However what I do know is that the biscuits were the highlight of my meal, maybe life. The Butcher's Steak was perfectly cooked (medium rare) and was a great cut of hanger steak. The fries were ginormous stalks of potatoes, too large a cut for my tastes. However the ranch dip with dill more than made up for it. This is my new favorite steakhouse - Totally cool, completely unpretentious, and incredibly delicious dinner at St. Anselm. Parking can be a bit tricky so show up a bit early to find a spot. Service was prompt and friendly. Decor is warm and inviting - kind of feels like you're in the wood paneled living room of your uncle's mountain lodge. Only downside is that the wines by the glass are way too expensive (3 glasses of average quality wine were $75). We started with the beets and ricotta - let me start by saying that I HATE beets - but this dish worked. The crispy charred bread brought out the smokiness in the beets and the creamy richness of the ricotta added a layer of texture and flavor that we all loved. The biscuits would've been great on their own but the house made pimento cheese took it to another level. Although it was insanely delicious I will say it was heavy and the portions were enormous. We took the leftovers home, but I'd take half a serving for half the price. The steaks. The STEAKS! My wife and eldest son had the NY strip. My youngest son had the butchers cut (hanger steak), and I had the prime ribeye. I'd heard that all the grilled meats were amazing here, but we really wanted steak. They were all cooked to perfection and were appropriately seasoned. My ribeye was one of the top 5 steaks I've had in my life, just insanely good. What really put things over the top were the sides. The collard greens were the best I've ever had and probably the best I ever will have. They were perfectly braised, packed with umami from the pork fat, a sweetness and nice crunch from the peanut crumble on top. The okra was also the best I've ever had. Not as slimey as I'm used to Okra being with a spicy sauce. The fried mashed potatoes were a bit of a throw away for me though - they lacked flavor and were dry. We finished with the ice cream cake which was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. The prices are reasonable (especially for how much food you get) outside of the wine. With tip the 2 apps, 4 steaks, 3 sides, 1 dessert, and 3 glasses of wine came in at $400. Overall, this is one of the best steakhouses I've been to, and it's nice not feeling like I'm in an old man's den because of the hip vibe. read more

Bottom line: I've had significantly better $200 dinners. The chairs for outdoor dining are uncomfortable after about 10 minutes. The "old fashioned" tasted like it was mostly simple syrup and cloves, and was too much of an artistic interpretation to be accurately labeled an Old Fashioned. I ended up ordering an extra shot of whiskey to try to help, but it was a lost cause - I was $39 into a drink I didn't enjoy. The grilled corn was way over-grilled. It was 3/4 char. In the Midwest, you'd lose all grilling privileges if you served corn like that. The bright spot was the wagyu steak. They did a great job with that. The pork porterhouse was a nice thick cut pork chop, but prepared pretty middle-of-the-road. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Service wasn't very impressive: nobody talked to us for at least 10min after we sat down, and she struggled to remember the basics of being a server. If you're trying to take your college girlfriend someplace expensive to show off your credit card, this is a decent spot. If you're familiar with great food and fine dining, you'll be underwhelmed. The hostess who initially told me 2 hours said somebody must have canceled, you are a very lucky man. Or maybe you didn't bother to check for seating for a brother and just told me 2 hours. I enjoyed my first visit to St. Anselm this past Sunday. I had the banana and chocolate chip pancakes which was very rich and filling. My date had the burger. Which exact burger? We also had the cognac punch which comes in a punch bowl. Cute but weird. The bowl is so big and the table is so small I was nervous I would knock it over lol. Think of the serving as a pitcher. We had more than enough between the two of us. Our server Jackson was super nice and helpful. Only cons are parking in the union market area. If you are in DC then Le Diplomate or Brasserie Beck both have superior service, food, and ambience at a lower cost. -- AMBIENCE -- the decor is great, low key with low lighting but it's got a great feel. It is unfortunately too loud to easily converse. I felt like I missed 20% of what my table companions were saying. FOOD -- perfectly unremarkable. The steak was good, though very rare for "medium rare." Mashed potatoes were . . . mashed potatoes. Desserts tasted like they'd been store bought and refrigerated: my carrot cake was dry and stiff, as was my wife's chocolate cake. There was nothing that made me think "I definitely need to eat this again." My beer was presented to me in a tiny glass beer mug (maybe it was the child's portion?). SERVICE -- our waitress was generally great, and very pleasant -- though she forgot to order our oysters (they weren't on the bill, either, so no harm no foul). All the folks working there seemed efficient and pleasant, and they were very accommodating with our 14 month old in a high chair. PRICE -- Four people with drinks, dessert, a few sides and steaks: $400 with tip. This was not, unfortunately, a meal that was worth $400. We ordered blue crab deviled egg for appetizer, the cinnamon roll monkey bread was purely bliss, the pancakes were huge, the grilled broccoli and crispy fingerling potatoes complimented the steak well and the ribeye was flavorful. St. Anselm: I had a unique experience at St. Anslem, trying out the Thanksgiving box. If you call in advance, you can pay around $100 for a Thanksgiving box for 2-- you pay via text, and then show up and pick up the food, prepared by their cooks. The food just needs to be heated up, and then it is good to eat. The box contained turkey and gravy, salad, collard greens, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and dessert which was two slices of pie. Pros: Food quality: The food was overall very tasty and fresh. I was definitely satisfied overall from a flavor perspective and genuinely felt like all of the items were made in way that was much better than anything that I could pull together. Collard greens: I want to devote a couple sentences to the collard greens specifically, because they were my favorite component of the meal. They were made perfectly and seasoned so well. I did find some pieces of meat in them (so vegetarians beware to remove those or avoid!) Convenience: Overall I found the process of getting this Thanksgiving box to be very convenient. I just called St. Anslem's in advance, ordered over the phone, and went to pick it up! Overall much faster than putting together a meal or even buying pre-made items in a grocery store, and exactly what I needed this year. Variety of food in box: The box contained a variety of items which paired well with each other and satisfied different flavor cravings-- savory, sweet, zesty, warm and comforting-- you had a little bit of each here! Cons: Portion size: I did feel that the portion sizes for each of the components of the meal could have been slightly bigger. I ordered the portion for 2, and we are small people that don't generally eat huge servings. We both felt that the food provided would almost fill you up, but not quite. To make sure we were full, we had purchased some really nice bread, and some additional dessert items, to complement what was in the box. I don't think this box will leave you with too many leftovers, which is ok-- just worth noting. Other: Momentary mix-up with payment-- make sure to screenshot receipt . When I arrived to pick up my box, there was no record of me having previously paid-- the payment is done through a system in which the restaurant texts you a link leading to a payment page. I paid before showing up to pick up my box, and there was a moment where they could not find record of my payments. They had me sit down and looked around a bit and then handed me my food, after I showed them my bank statement which showed payment to the restaurant a few days before. The payment system that is used for the thanksgiving box process doesn't seem to email you a receipt, so I would recommend that you screenshot the confirmation of payment page after you pay-- I did this but had accidentally deleted the screenshot-- and it would have come in handy to have that! read more

Came here last night to celebrate a professional milestone and had a great meal! The ribeye was cooked perfectly and we really enjoyed the creamy spinach and fingerling potatoes. Can't wait to come back! read more
