I've always wondered why "New American" restaurants in the DMV just can't get the "burger and fries" right for a while. That all changed when I came across The Smith in Penn Quarter. In my two visits, I've tried "Burger Royale" and "The Smith Burger", both came out with the perfect temperature, texture, and portion. They nailed it every time. This place knows how to run a smooth operation in the midst of the big volume of customers that come in without having to compromise customer service, one bit. The space is lively with conversation, perfect for large get together's, but it can also be more toned down in the evening for a cozy date night. To top all of this off, manager Ashanti is the lady that made my experience all the more memorable and she deserves all the credit for making sure my visits have been done right! What an amazing place. The drinks were on point and the food was incredible. Our group reserved the private room which enhanced our experience and made it feel very intimate. We had a prix fixe menu. We ordered everything from the calamari, spicy salmon tartare, braised short rib mafaldine, bistro burger and the honeycrisp apple pie. The calamari had some surprising additions, but very delicious and a must order if you love calamari. The salmon tartare was really fresh and tasty. The mafaldine was cooked al dente and the short rib you could tell was slowly braised for hours. My friend and I really enjoyed our experience here. The ambience is very warm, bright and definitely loud. If you want a private more intimate place this may not be it unless you have a private dining room. As many times as I've walked past The Smith this was the first time I've actually dined in and I'm so glad that I did. We stopped by to grab drinks and an appetizer before heading over to the Wizards game. It was packed but we were able to grab a couple of seats at the bar. Food was so much better than where we went last year charging twice the price and super appreciate they were not requiring upfront payment with no cancelations with refund allowed like numerous other places looked at. We visited The Smith for Thanksgiving hoping to avoid a traditional holiday meal, but the special menu only offered turkey or salmon as entrée options. I really wish there had been a bit more variety. That said, the service was excellent, and the managers were incredibly attentive and welcoming throughout our visit. Even though the Thanksgiving menu wasn't quite what we were looking for, the experience overall was still positive. I had to take a star off not because of the food or atmosphere. I always love going to the Smith in DC or NY. The place has a good vibe a bit loud but it's not unbearable. Sometimes I don't like eating at the tables that you share a bench basically and this is why... I brought my best friend from childhood to DC for a girl's trip and to visit my daughter, she loved it except for what I'm going to tell you. The food is really good I got the chicken schnitzel yummy and she had the bar steak she enjoyed but said it wasn't very hot. I did try her sauteed spinach and it was good. Always make a dinner reservation! So I requested a table alone meaning not on top of everyone, that didn't happen. My waiter was very nice but he kept putting his butt seriously in our faces every time he went to the table next to us WTH!! Decor was nice and I loved the dim lighting but it was very loud in the restaurant. So much so I could barely hear my husband sitting right across from me or the waitress. I prefer to eat dinner in a quiet setting so this was a bit distracting to me. Both of our dishes were excellent, I ordered the braised short rib mafaldine which was recommended by our waitress and it was amazing. Portion was large as well. I maybe ate half and was super full. Great place for a family breakfast. I've been on a hunt for family friendly restaurants in DC. We came here for breakfast on a Tuesday and we were one of a couple tables. They have a kids menu so that's how I know a place is family friendly! Service was very attentive. I got their freshly squeezed orange juice and matcha latte. The OJ was delicious. The matcha is made with honey and oatmilk which I enjoyed. One kid got the kids meal that had eggs, bacon, toast and switched out home fries with fries. The other got a kids meal of pancakes. The scrambled eggs were just ok, but my son loved his bacon. The pancake was pretty good, but my four year old didn't need two. I should have gotten him just a side of pancake. They bring free biscuits which were absolutely delicious. My son got the quarter pounder cookie. It cracks me up that this cookie is a quarter of a pound. It's $5 and pretty delicious. It came warm. My son ate half of it. This bar is beautiful and my son was rocking out to the music. I'm a fan. read more

We happened to stumble across The Smith for brunch today, and it was a pleasant experience. Our food was excellent. We tried the Johnny Benedict which is corn bread topped with chicken sausage and poached eggs. I LOVE The Smith, it's one of the few places in Penn Quarter you can get a nice meal. The restaurant is very easy to get in and out of, no steps. Wheelchairs can just roll on in. A beautiful, habd laid tile floor, really awesome place. The food is really good, it can be a little on the pricey side, especially with the DC surcharge, but tipping is optional. Unfortunately our experience at The Smith was disappointing and hopefully a one off experience. We went for brunch on a Sunday in December - 3 of us who were having a girls brunch out without kids and husbands. We were sat right away in a nice booth that allowed for easy conversation. At first, the extra time to catch up since we hadn't seen each other in a while was great, but then realized we hadn't been greeted in the 20+ minutes after being seated. We tried to flag down a server without luck, so walked back to the hostess desk to have a server come over. We were brought bottles of water for the table (sparkling and still), which I love so we can refill as needed. We were also brought some bread and butter. When our server greeted us, we placed both our beverage and food order at the same time. Mimosas were on point!! Delicious! Many options from classic OJ, grapefruit, cucumber, and passion fruit! The fresh juice makes all the difference! Also we felt reasonably priced at $9. These go down easy! We noticed several tables around us were seated after us, orders taken, food served, and more than half eaten, and some finished all before our food arrived. We did have one person with an allergy and the Manager stopped by our table to let us know if it didn't have a red flag, don't eat it. This was very appreciated, but thought he may have also apologized for how long it was taking to have our food arrive. However, not the case. Our food arrived and after I took three bites, asked if others food was cold. It was! Having kids, it was something we're accustomed to, but when we're dining out, paying the prices we are, we expect our food to be warm. Out of three main orders and two sides, only one side was warm. One of the dishes was eggs Benedict, and the eggs were not runny at all and was more like medium boiled. Two of us have worked in the restaurant world previously and it was almost like our plates sat under a heat lamp for quite sometime. So we then flagged down another manager - They took our food back and had it remade. However, it then took another 20-25 minutes to get our food. New food came out and was delicious! The flavors were on point and really good. We ordered the Eggs Benedict with bacon instead of ham, Goat Cheese Omelettes (one with egg white), a side of home fries and a potato waffle. We ate quickly because unfortunately we needed to be somewhere else. We ended up being there close to 2-2.5 hours. Again, tables around us were turning over much faster than ours, so I do think this was an isolated event. We thought the manager would have come over to apologize or try to make it right, but this did not happen. Our server was friendly and believe they work as a team (as they have runners bringing food, someone else for water/bread), etc. So not entirely their fault, but also didn't greet us until asked, didn't check in on food until our remade one came out, we approached again for second round of drinks. Perhaps they had too many tables? It just wasn't a great experience for us almost the full time we were there. Again, when the food came out warm it was quite delicious and the place is beautiful, but unfortunately with our experience, I'm hesitant to recommend others to go here when there are other places available in the same area. read more

So staff are amazing! But they ran out of espresso martinis and bread by 6:45pm and they blamed the Capitals game but they had to know about that beforehand so thats on them. So the first things I ordered were out so not a strong start. Also the espresso martinis are made in batches not to order so probably for the best they were out. The food was really good. We had the mussels and the le burger and we enjoyed both. Our server was busy but attentive and really made the experience worth it. There is another location in Chicago (where we live) so maybe we will give that a try. read more

I was quickly seated on the patio with little to no wait without a reservation. I ordered the smith burger with a fried egg and crispy bacon. The burger was savory and flavorful. Highly recommend adding a fried egg and bacon to add elevated flavor. 5/5 Not pictured a short stack of pancakes. The pancakes were light and fluffy (just the way I like them) The syrup quickly absorbed in the pancakes to lock in a sweet and buttery flavor. I had such a delicious brunch at the smith. While I have been a patron for dinner, I had yet to venture during the day. The ambiance is bright and vibrant, and very busy. The noise levels were very high, so if you are hard of hearing or are trying to have a more intimate meal, this may not be the option for you. Otherwise, it was wonderful. My girlfriend loved the Burger Royale, but said the fries were decent and the ketchup was interesting. I loved the Smith Burger and I enjoyed the fries and ketchup. They gave us free sparkling water.
