I sat at the bar and David and Mya were amazing! I can't wait to come back! They were attentive and held great conversations!

We had a great experience at Matchbox, and our server Naima was phenomenal! We had a large group with children, and she was incredibly patient, kind, and attentive with all of us. She handled our big table so well and made the whole experience easy and enjoyable. Naima deserves a raise! We really appreciated how well she took care of our family and would absolutely love to have her as our server again. read more

My friend and I popped here for reverse happy hour following a baseball game. We honestly were just looking for like a quick bite and maybe a drink. The bar was relatively empty when we walked in around 10:30. Being able to sit was really easy and there was quite a bit of space. Our bartender was very attentive and quickly took our order and we received our drinks pretty quickly. Everything up to this point was great, and Service continued to be very consistent and good. When it comes to the food, though, I honestly wasn't impressed. My last memories of matchbox Pizza, specifically the fire and spicy pizza, were so good. The product that I received was not reminiscent of that. The pizza itself wasn't that spicy. It was also so thin it was almost comical. The sushi addition is new for the restaurant and I was curious. I had the shrimp tempura and it was OK, nothing spectacular or amazing, but it was good. My one complaint is that it came on top of a bed of just random sauce, which was kind of gross. My friend had the truffle pizza and it was delicious. The aroma of truffle was so overwhelming and she really enjoyed it. I will say the price of our meal for 2-10 inch pizzas, two drinks (one glass of wine, one cocktail), and two appetizers was $60 total. Despite not being the best meal, for a late night, quick grab when you don't wanna spend too much money. This is a really good spot. read more

Solid but unspectacular place for a group lunch. The grilled chicken and avocado sandwich was solid as the chicken was lean and without and weird bad fatty pieces on it. The smoked gouda cheese went well with the chicken but the arugula wasn't the best pairing. I'm not a mayo fan so I skipped that and fortunately they correctly brought my sandwich sans mayo. It was a large sandwich so I was plenty full after having that and the pickle and serviceable but unspectacular shoestring fries. It always makes me laugh when they serve them in a little basket that makes it seem like they were freshly cooked in that basket Food came out pretty quickly and some folks had to wait a few minutes but it was within the bounds of normal waits for different meals for a large group so that wasn't a big deal. Service was fine too, though we could've used a few more water refills. This place is fine for a group lunch and I wouldn't be opposed to coming back here but there's nothing to really draw me back either. read more

Came here for a business lunch. Ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. Waitress was great--told me ahead of time the avocado wasn't going to be ripe. Ok bummer. But didn't expect the moldy tomato on the sandwich. Sent it back--they tried again and I think reheated the same chicken breast. Couldn't even cut it with a knife and fork. Huge waste of time and money. No thanks. read more

I had an amazing time at matchbox! I came by myself for the $37 unlimited brunch and by the time I got there they did run out of the fig pizza & cinnamon rolls but still everything that I got was delicious!! I'm still dreaming about Cinnamon Toast Crunch French toast The dj was playing great music and it was the perfect crowd & volume! I sat at the bar and the service was good and fast for as many people that were in there and I can't wait to go back and try what I didn't get to! read more

We came here for a group lunch. Matchbox has lots of seating and is good for large groups. They had large tv screens showing the latest sports news. The atmosphere was lively during a weekday lunch. They also had WiFi available. They have a $15 lunch special where you can get a small personal pizza and a cup of soup or side salad. I ordered the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich ($19) which comes with a side of fries and a pickle spear. It was just okay. They serve shoestring fries - just like McDonalds, but not as golden and not as crispy. The sandwich had good structure and was filling, but the chicken was bland and dry. I could've used some more sauce. I think I'm used to Nando's chicken which is moister and full of saucy flavor. Other people at the table ordered the fish and chips ($24) which looked good - it came with two large, meaty pieces of cod and the same shoestring fries. Also on the menu - Matchbox now serves sushi! Service was sufficient but a little absentminded, particularly for drinks. Some people never got their water (I think she forgot) and drinks were never refilled - cups were empty. We were checked on a couple of times, but drink service was often overlooked. Food trickled out for our group. It came in about three waves. It was a reasonable wait (nothing offensively long), but it's always nice when the food comes out at the same time, or when some verbal acknowledgement is given to say that everyone's food would be out shortly. I would say food and service were average overall. read more

Came here for brunch a few weeks ago because we needed a place that could handle a large party for a book club. None of us were that impressed with the food but it still got the job done. Personally, I liked the brunch pizza and appreciated that I could get it without sausage. I also shared an aperol spritz tower with a few friends and was a lot less impressed with that, it was very watered down due to all the ice. Looked cool though. If for some reason, every where else in Penn quarter is packed, feel free to go, otherwise you might like some of the other restaurants in the area better. read more

The atmosphere at Matchbox is very causal and great for families who want fantastic food or for wanting to grab some drinks and appetizers with friends. Ordered the BBQ Jerk pizza. I ate the whole pie and it was seasoned well and had a kick to the pizza. I also ordered a Cesar Side salad and for being just a salad the croutons were made daily from bread. The lettuce was very fresh and moth withered at all and was the perfect amount of Cesar dressing. I also ordered the watermelon patio pounder. It was a light cocktail but after a few you may feel it. Food and service was excellent. Happy Hour specials are worth giving a try. Ended with an old fashion that is served with little smoke from a small torch that adds a heavy smoky flavor which I have never seen at table side. read more

Service is fantastic! Ambiance is a sporty vibe, fun-filled, good for groups. Food is okay. For $34 All-You-Can-Eat Brunch and the opportunity to sample EVERYTHING, yes, you read that right, EVERYTHING, on the menu, within 2-hours, is a steal and downright criminal...but you won't be arrested, just FULL! For an additional $25, you can have All-You-Can-Eat Drinks. You can choose from Bloody Mary's, Strawberry Lemonade Margaritas, Peach Bellinis, Old Fashions, again, robbery. They keep the food and drinks coming. We sampled everything from the Pesto Chicken Pizza. Small sized vs personal. Fried Chicken Wings come with either Old Bay, Mambo Sauce or Buffalo. Can't go wrong with either. You get about 4 in the sample. Catfish is fried and seasoned to perfection. Comes with a side of bland and our initial serving was cold grits, as if they were pre-plated. The portion is about 2 full tablespoons, in a miniature 2.5 oz. stainless steel sauce round. Steak and eggs with potatoes is a slivered serving of steak, cooked to your doneness but unseasonably and tough. Eggs scrambled with Cheddar. Potatoes were small round home fries. 3, 6, 9 Burgers are Beef Sliders topped with a mound of shoestring Onion Rings. You can choose between a leg or breast for their Chicken & Waffle. The Waffle's, two (2) pieces of one (1) half (2 quarter pieces.) There's SO MUCH to choose from. We didn't even get to the Pancakes and French Toast offerings. Again, you have two (2) hours to Eat ALL You Can. In, the words of my Beloved grandmother, "Don't let your eyes become bigger than your stomach." Good for groups and those who are budget-conscious, who want to maximize their entire experience. read more

Matchbox is undefeated to me! I've had so many occasions here for their brunch because it's just worth it! This time I came in for their lunch special and met my cousin to catch up. Parking for me was pretty easy as I found street parking right in front of the restaurant, my cousin parked in the garage. This matchbox is pretty big and it was decorated really nice. We were seated immediately for lunch and our server assisted us with the lunch options. I chose the mushroom pizza and soup. And my cousin had apple pear and soup of the day. For the $14.99 price it was worth it we had pizza left to take home. Wrong advertising and super slow service. There was an advertisement out with lunch specials and we specifically asked if these are the deals going on from the outdoor server and were told yes. We sat down and when we started to order the waiter told us he doesn't know anything about the specials and went in to check with the manager and then came out and said no specials and the advertisement will be taken down. Which was not done. The waiter when left and let us sit for about 20 minutes before he came back to take our order. The wrong advertisement was still up when we left. read more

While in DC, we decided to come here for brunch to take advantage of their AYCE brunch. We had reservations somewhere else but when we saw this location was close and remembered how much fun we had at the Silver Spring location, it was a no-brainer to definitely go here for brunch instead. It was pretty empty when we arrived and were seated almost immediately. The seats were dirty with crumbs and food so I waited for our server/hostess to come back so I could inform them but she took a minute so I found an employee who graciously came and cleaned the seat off. I sat down and almost started dancing in my seat from the anticipation and remembering how good the food was at the Silver Spring location. I also wanted to order one of everything LOL When our server finally came back we quickly learned that if you're doing unlimited both parties have to order it at the bar table and since my friend only wanted something small to eat, that wasn't going to work for us. Now, I was faced with the decision of trying to decide on one item only! Do you know how hard it is for me to decide before going to a restaurant, as I'm looking at their menu, on what I would like to eat? I just asked our server to put in my friend's order and come back for mine. As we sat there, we wondered if we should have sat at the bar instead so I could have ordered my unlimited and they could have only ordered what they wanted. It was interesting because we asked the server this and they replied the same rule would apply for the bar, which didn't make sense because if I'm sitting at the bar I'm responsible for my own bill. But ok . . . . I decided to go with the shrimp and grits and asked for the sauce on the side after I confirmed the sausage didn't contain pork. The grits came out fresh and seasoned with unoverbaring cheese. The shrimp are an afterthought though since they didn't have any seasoning at all. They are highly depending upon that cajun sauce to season the shrimp when it should be simmered in it or at least he's in with those same spices that the sauce contains. My stomach started turning on first bite which made me happy I didn't go with the unlimited because I don't know if I would have been able to eat more. It was a good playlist on and that was about it. Definitely only going to the Silver Spring location hence forward. read more

Food tastes good. Portion size was good for the burger and fries but the salad wasn't that substantial and a little small for an "entree" priced dish. Service started a little rough. Waiters were arguing amongst each other while a few tables waited to be seated. It took a while to get going but eventually they resolved their situation and service improved. The place is pretty large but not good for large groups. We were seated at table in the center of the restaurant and directly in front of the entrance. We made the best of it but probably should have just split ourselves into 2 booths. read more

Had a pretty good meal at MatchBox, which serves up a lot of traditional American flare. Looks to be part of a large restaurant group for the area. Had a good dinner here. I very much enjoyed the matchbox mule which was blackberry flavored. I also enjoyed the apple and pear salad which was light and refreshing! I wouldn't recommend the donuts however. While the raspberry sauce they came with was very good, the donuts themselves were off and felt like I could taste the oil they were fried in. This is a great family friendly option in Penn Quarter. We were looking for someplace that everyone in the family could find something to eat and this fit the bill. My son is obsessed with pepperoni pizza and their kids pizza is 10 inches which is a great size. My child ate the whole thing! He loved it my husband and I split a 14 inch pizza, which was plenty for the two of us. The pizza was served very quickly, which was great. My husband also ordered the crab soup which he thought was outstanding. They also have other people pleaser foods like burgers and fries. Found this place while looking for a happy hour after a day of museums. The happy hour is pretty decent. $10 drinks and some food items as well. The pizza was okay, I feel like it could have had more flavor and we chose the pizza because the other pizzas looked delicious around us. We also shared a smash burger that was not pictured. It was just a bit confusing. They brought food out to our table and it was 2 smash burgers and they brought an extra plate on the side. I guess they had given us the wrong food because we asked for a smash burger to be cut in half. Instead of leaving one of the burger orders on our table, they took all the food off our table. A few minutes later, the burger cut in half was given to us on separate plates.. with no fries. I was confused because our burger came on separate plates, so I assumed the fries on the separate plate was supposed to go with our burger. Because everyone else around us was getting fries with their burger order on their plates. We asked if the burger was supposed to come with fries.. and they said no because it was happy hour. But everyone else was getting it with fries.. they ended up giving us a plate of fries for the burger. Our waiter was so kind and so nice and gave us suggestions. It was such weird and seemed like miscommunication with the staff. read more

Good location and menu but kitchen let me down. The good: The location is great between a bunch of awesome museums and near the capital bank arena. The menu is also good with brick oven pizza, traditional bar fare, sandwiches and salads. The bad: A good location and menu were let down by the kitchen, food was slow and when it did arrive it was the wrong item and overcooked. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich and it came out as a plain fried chicken sandwich (or the hot sauce was unnoticeable) the chicken was a bit over cooked and dry with some burnt breading around the edges. The mediocre: I was seated at the bar and service was friendly and attentive though the bartender was issuing a lot more apologies to diners than should be required. The menu has a lot of easy options for the family and maybe the kitchen staff is new but I will be walking past this place for the time being. read more

Matchbox has been one of my favorite casual eateries when I'm in the Washington, DC area. I love their mini burgers with onion strings which is one of their staple menu items. We ordered them in addition to roasted salmon, where we asked for mashed potatoes instead of butternut squash risotto as my cousin is allergic. For drinks, I had the caramel apple lemonade (apple infused vodka, lemonade, caramel syrup) & my cousin had the love boat cocktail (the love boat Bacardi silver rum, cinnamon syrup, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, pineapple juice), which were refreshing. We had the warm donuts for dessert which were freshly made & pulled apart like a croissant, flaky layers which were delicious with the chocolate & raspberry sauces. Service was warm & friendly. read more

ALWAYS DOWN FOR A HOT, CHEESY, GREASY PIZZA * Price: Old Bay wings were $16 for 8, the 10" pepperoni pizza was $19, and a side of fries was $5. Cocktails are around $12-14, and the rest of the drinks are cheaper. * Food: I ordered the pepperoni pizza, and it was so hot and cheesy, straight out of the oven. It's thin crust, so keep that in mind if you're more of a bread person. The Old Bay wings were delicious, but wayyyy too pricey for the quantity. The fries are on the thinner side (crispy, but I prefer more potato). IF YOU HAVE A VERTICAL ID, THEY MAY NOT SERVE YOU ALCOHOL ANYMORE DUE TO NEW DC RULES. * Cleanliness/Setting: PLENTY of seating. There are so many TVs, so don't worry about missing a football or basketball game. The bar area is included as well. * Service: The hostess and server were QUICK and ATTENTIVE. As soon as we sat down, we got our waters immediately. Our orders were taken quickly, and we were fed QUICK. Great customer service. read more

I was extremely un impressed with the food and service of this establishment. We gone on a Friday same night that a concert at capital one arena took place. Our waitress was Nadia. While super nice she was extremely busy. And unable I think to provide service needed. They had her running a large area of tables and plus a portion of outside. Our order was messed up. The double bacon burger came well done when it should have been medium. We had to send it back because the egg was not fried hard enough and then came back still under cooked. The presentation of the chicken sandwich could have been better since I altered the request. She mentioned offering us a fried onions to taste but then bought us a side of fried onions that she changed us for. And my drink was forgetting about!!!! Had to get a manager to get it.
