I'm going to miss this place when I leave. When it's Earlybird the breakfast burritos are excellent (and huge!) At a reasonable price. I grab and use in their entirety both the orange-y hot sauce and the green sauce every time while adding hatch chiles to the simplistico burrito. I've shown several other people this place and they loved it as well. When it turns to side door they make some bomb Detroit style pizza. I truly haven't had a bad example of the style yet. I don't know if I'm selecting well or if it's maybe just low key the ultimate style of pizza but this is yet another fantastic example. It's just a small, quick takeout place for the most part, though there is some seating outside when the weather is appropriate. When they named this place, they absolutely nailed it! Side Door Pizza truly earns the name. The pizza counter literally shares a kitchen with Scarlet Oak, and how do you get in or out? Through the side door, of course. Side Door Pizza is essentially a takeout counter just off the kitchen with its own separate entrance. We didn't quite realize that going in, and since it was cold and windy, we asked if we could take our pizza inside and sit at Scarlet Oak. They were happy to accommodate, asking only that we order something there as well, so we grabbed a drink. The pizza came out quickly, hot and fresh. We're vegetarians, so we ordered one square slice of cheese and one square slice of mushroom. The cheese slice was good but not great. It could have used a bit more sauce and seasoning. The mushroom slice, however, was excellent. We both immediately agreed we should have just ordered a full mushroom pie. Overall, it was a really enjoyable experience. The environment was welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. If you're in the Navy Yard area, it's definitely worth a stop. Wanted to try a new breakfast spot, so ordered on UberEats. The place does not offer seating inside, it is more like a order and go spot. The staff were extremely friendly and thoughtful with preparing my order. The only room for improvement was the wait time for food. I waited an additional 10 minutes from when the Uber application displayed my order was ready. Could be a glitch or an issue they can fix on their side. The hash browns were flavorful and cheesy (a new take an a staple recipe) and I never thought I would like cabbage in a breakfast burrito, but the flavor profile works! This might just be some of the best pizza in DC. I'm typically more of a NY thin slice type of girly, but when I saw a picture of Side Door's pizza it ignited a craving for Detroit style. I also didn't even realize that I walk past the location all of the time but never paid attention to the modest door and signage. It's not hard to find or anything, but it's just tucked into a block where I didn't expect to see it. Apparently it's attached to Scarlet Oak. I ordered the It's-A-Meat-A-Ball Pizza with homemade meatballs, mozzarella, pizza sauce, basil cream drizzle and shaved parmesan. It was AMAZING. But also since it's deep dish, so filled. Seriously though, it was one of the best bites of pizza I've had in awhile. I also love that they have lattes, sushi, burgers and all kinds of other miscellaneous menu items which means I'll be back even when I'm not craving pizza. They have plenty of offerings besides pizza. I happened to visit during restaurant week so I was able to get an appetizer, a small pizza and a dessert for $30. I tried the chicken parm pizza which a decent sized portion for a small. The pizza is Detroit style so thick crust toppings on the bottom and sauce on the top. The crust was the perfect. This delicious Detroit style pizza will have you coming back for more. It is so filling and packed with flavor. I got half pepperoni and half meat lovers, and it comes with their sauce on top. Each order comes with a side of ranch and hot peppers that complement the pizza very well. I also ordered some garlic parm wings. The wings were so crispy! I'm really enjoy SidebDoor Pizza. I'd rank it second for my favorite pizza place in the area after Wiseguys. Sometimes you just want a nice, thick piece of pizza and Side Door does not disappoint. Is it overpriced for the amount of pizza you get, yes. But is it worth it, also yes. The small pizza is four slices. I'm usually full after the second one so it serves as two servings for me. Honestly, no complaints. If you like bread, you'll enjoy Side Door pizza, apparently this is Detroit style. I'm simple, my go to is the pepperoni pizza and it hits every time. I've heard lots of great things about this place, but the food was just ok for me. I had the pizza bundle which was an unbelievable deal!! You get a large pizza and three sides for like $55- i had the regular cheese pizza with wings, risotto balls, and the Caesar salad as my sides. The pizza was pretty undercooked- the dough was so soft when you bit into it. So that was unfortunate. I'm a huge fan of Side Door. At first I was a bit turned off by the price since Emmy Squared is down the street (and is cheaper) but once I saw the pizza size I understood why. The pizzas here are massive (and actually taste good unlike Emmy Squared). I swear a pizza here is at least 5 pounds. The pepperoni is my go-to and it's overflowing with pepperoni. It is a tad bit salty though. I've also had the BLT pizza and the Chicken Parm pizza. I liked the Chicken Parm over the BLT. I also love the giardiniera that comes on the side and I love that they'll add an extra side of red sauce if I ask for it. They also do 1/2 and 1/2 pizzas for no extra cost. So I finally had the opportunity to try out this establishment. I was at work and my GPS said that I was only (11) minutes away. This place did NOT disappoint. This spot is using quality ingredients and their online ordering system was accurate. My pizza was ready exactly when they said that it would be and it was piping hot. I ordered the pepperoni pizza, initially ate one slice and was good, but my inner fat man had to have another and another. Yes, I ate (3) slices and I'm STUFFED. My all time favorite forever and ever is the no longer existent "Italian Inn" that was formerly located in Landover Hills, MD. I've had a few good "Detroit Style" pizzas. Redlight On 14th ST NW and Emmy Squared in the Shaw area of DC. Side Door is the best and definitely gives you more bang for your buck. The 10x14 and a Stella Artois was $33 bucks. I think I paid that at both of the other pizza establishments for a smaller pie and I did NOT receive a Stella to wash my meal down. The four star rating is based on having no public restroom and the appearance of chaos when you enter the restaurant to pick up your food. The chaos had me questioning the quality of my food. I've made Detroit pizza before with All Recipes Chef John's recipe, and I should've done that, since it's not that hard to make(you don't even need a mixer!). I was flying solo while in DC for work so their portion sizes (and prices) were on the plus side. It is aptly named as there really is just a door in the side of a building next to a bigger restaurant, and you pick up your pizza at the door. A single picnic table waits outside during nice weather, but there are also parks nearby. My pizza was ready right on schedule when the online ordering said it would be. The box was heavy, and this was a thick pizza with an absolute ton of cheese. Even eating half of it was a bit much. The sauce was zingy and the edges crisped; it was a satisfying rendition of the indulgent Detroit style. I added a pupusa as well; they had a menu of a few random non-pizza items. The pupusa was more beans than cheese, and had a bit of curtido and sauce, neither of which really nailed the flavor I wanted (the sauce was not as good as the pizza sauce and had a bit of a sulfur-y bad onion taste). Still, interesting. It is just a little pop-up, but it successfully brings the in-vogue pizza style to the near Southeast. I noted that someone else said this pizza wasn't any good cold. Speaking from experience, I must disagree. It was arguably even better cold the next day than it was when I bought it. read more
