Continuing the last 3 of the runner-up alphabet series (& then onto 2025 alphabet series with runner-ups included at the same time) and the only representing 2023, W is for Wiseguy Pizza. I first had Wiseguy on 3rd & Massachusetts Ave NW way back in 2014, and I knew I loved their pizza. I had also been to a couple of other locations in Arlington & their only one in MD, which closed, at Wheaton Mall. I visited this Navy Yard Wiseguy about 3 times. The first was on Monday, January 6, 2020. I had work travel to DC. My girlfriend of that time was working in DC. It was a brief period of time. She started in December 2019, then on that Friday, 1/10, the contract was furloughed due to the contract company President dying, so she was off for 2 weeks. Then, it was back to normal commuting back to DC, which was brief, as Covid was around the corner, and became 100% remote. She was happy I surprised her coordinating lunch at Wiseguy at Navy Yard not far from her work. This location was pretty new at the time. She & I loved our pizza. It's a thin NY style, perhaps the best in the DMV! The other noteworthy time I visited was on Saturday, July 8, 2023. Early that afternoon, I was way up at Columbia Mall, where I happened to be writing this Yelp review now, as I ate lunch & had a movie on my AMC A-List. Afterward, I was texting/calling with a friend. He was itching to go to a baseball game. O's were away, but Nationals were in town playing against one of my favorite teams, the Texas Rangers, and I had their pitcher in our Fantasy baseball league. We coordinated that afternoon having about 1.5 hours to buy tickets on phone, for me to drive from Columbia to Greenbelt Metro with some modest traffic on parts of 95, & metro all the way on Green line for the 4:05 game. My friend was running a bit later, so we didn't enter right at 4:05, but my heart sank when I heard Nats fans loudly cheering for a homer. My Rangers pitcher got clobbered by the Nats. I was pissed at him quickly dropping him the next morning as soon as I could. Although rain chances were low like 15%, there was a heavy thunderstorm that blew from DCA to Nats Park; almost the entire region was clear, but just bad luck. The rain lasted like 15 minutes, but I was pissed at the Nats because they delayed the game by 1.5 hours! They should've gotten the game going within 45 minutes. I think it was a ploy by the Nats to get people to buy more drinks & food. I refused to give the Nats a dime besides the ticket to go to the game. But after the rain, I was hungry from like the 5th inning to the end. We should've been out of there about 6:30 (which would've been on par with my hunger level) but instead like 8 PM. I told my friend about Wiseguy seeing it was quick & relatively cheap. He loved their pizza too as did I once again. If I'm ever in Navy Yard, Wiseguy is definitely a viable option for me. read more

How do you mess up a assembly line.. literally you go in order and serve that way. A party of three was in front of me.. Each ordered 2 slices each. One of the person ordered the same type of slices. I ordered the combo (which comes with a soda and knots) they did not order any combo. And of course they ness up and give my knots to someone else and dont even charge them for a combo. And keeps saying we dont have knots right now... Well if you never messed up you would have never given my knots when mine was ordered and heated. The place needs ac.. steaming hot . Slice isnt even a "WOW".. Waste of my time to deal with incompetent employees. Oh and because they were tossing my box around from and away from the shelf like 3 times. Stopped here after getting facials with the kids. They weren't hungry, so that left me scrambling to find something to eat for myself. Saw Wise Guy Pizzas and headed in for a slice. The restaurant wasn't too crowded and had lots of space to sit inside and outside to enjoy the pizza. At the counter, was able to peruse the different varieties of pizzas available. Ordered a regular cheese slice. The wait for my slice was not long. It was piping hot and cheesy just like I like it. Not too much grease noted. The attentive service you receive from the staff is very helpful when you are attempting to peruse all the wonderful looking offerings in front of you... your eyes are so busy trying to scan everything you end up holding up the line lol. They have great salads, garlic knots and now they've added tasty wings to the menu! This used to be one of my favorite spots to bring my kid for New York style pizza, which we both get a hankering for every now and then after living in/so close to the city for so long. However, the pizza, at least at this location, has definitely fallen off. When I will say, however, is it during this visit, I received the best service I've ever had from a Black woman who had braids. I did not catch her name. She was so nice and made great recommendations. Things I didn't like: My grandma slice and spacey pepperoni slice were atrocious. The grandma slice looked like the bread had been baked/burnt, then just topped in sauce and one tiny square of cheese with a piece of basil. The spicy pepperoni slice was so freaking messy and lacking cheese, that it wasn't even appetizing. Also, neither were heated appropriately. Cheese and pepperoni slices: needed more sauce and needed to be heated better. Garlic knots: delicious. These never miss. Chicken bacon ranch: oddly stale. Something else that I found a little disturbing was another employee, come from the back pizza-making area, up to the front. As she came to the front, she was chewing food, licking her fingers, and reaching into the salad case. I think she was packing orders ... while she was also eating. Ewww. It's 1 AM on a Friday night and this place gives me life. The slice was perfectly crisp on the edges, chewy in the middle, and just greasy enough to feel right. The sauce had that perfect tang, the cheese pulled like it should, and the crust actually had flavor. My only mistake was not getting two slices. Late-night perfection. read more

Absolutely love this place. Never thought I'd find somewhere local to replace Andy's but honestly, this is even better. I've shown this place to over 6 other New Yorkers as well and they all agree they've had worse pizza in NY and all liked it a good deal. This is the real deal if you want an NY slice. Also, they make my favorite veggie slice I've ever had anywhere. They add hot peppers to it which is a nice touch. I've also had the vegan supreme a couple times and that's also bomb. This is also a great location to sit outside of on a nice day. Especially being in the little plaza with trees and the fountain going. The inside is more like a standard NY pizza shop though. When getting slices you're served pretty fast too, usually get your slices within 30 seconds of finishing paying. I've been a frequent patron of this location in the past year without any issue. However, today was a different story. I ordered the pepperoni and IL Capo slice to go. I ate the pepperoni slice with no issue, but when I go to the IL capo slice, as I'm literally taking a bite, I notice a spider on the pizza. I assume it must have gotten inside the box so I used my napkins to pick it off. To my surprise, it was dead and cooked into the pizza. Location: great! Situated by an ice rink in Navy Yard. Shares its location with a gelato shop. Inside has few sets in the front, and additional seating in the back Service was quick and painless. The workers were friendly. We came on a Thursday night. We were looking for the vegan options, but they only had a couple old-looking slices left of one of the options. So it might be best to come earlier, or call-ahead to verify before choosing an alternate location. We tried a few different slices. Backyard 9/10, Buffalo Chicken 9/10, Mushroom Truffle 7.5/10. And the Spicy Roni was a 3/10. The crust was sooooo hard. On top of that, the Spicy Roni is a smaller slice, but still the same $5 price as the larger slices. It was sooo hard to bite into. I get it was reheated, but there's no way the dough was meant to be that crispy. Or was it? I actually cut my gums on it (wish i was joking). We purchased several pizzas for a work event. I was excited having heard how wonderful it was. Save yourself the trouble, they make Papa Johns taste good. It was overwhelmingly spicy, flat and chewy. I tried the veggie pizza, it was so flat you couldn't discern what veggies were included. Four Tums and six pieces of mint gum later I'm on the other side. Wiseguys is kind of an underrated pizza joint in D.C especially this location since it's a bigger establishment which houses multiple eateries (ranging from pizza to sushi to gelato). We always get their paneer or chicken paneer tikka slice which is an Indian spicy take on pizza and reminds you of the fusion pizzas back in the subcontinent. They have a range of pizzas to choose from and even have Roman style square pizzas and New York slices. Their best kept secret however is their delicious chocolate chip cookies. With an open layout, you can see directly into the kitchen - there's always something pleasant about seeing pizza being made right in front of you.
