We ate at Lupo Marino for dinner before attending a concert. I was able to make a reservation in advance with Google reservations. It's a small space, so reservations are highly encouraged. When we arrived at the restaurant for check-in, everyone in line already had a reservation. They also have some patio seating when the weather is nice. Once we were seated, the table had a carafe of water for self-service. I wasn't super hungry so I ordered the polpo al forno (charred octopus) appetizer and my friend ordered the cacio e pepe. The octopus was cooked correctly - it was tender and not chewy, but it was not the *most tender* that I've ever had. It was served with garlic confit potatoes, a variety of peppers, arugula, and a squid ink aioli. Everything had good flavor overall. Food was prepared quickly. Service was standard. They did all the basic checks but was nothing exceptional. The cacio e pepe came with a homemade tonnarelli. The tonnarelli had a good chewiness to it and stood up well to the melty cheese. It also held the heat well. It's a simple and classic dish that fit the bill. I would come here to try more dishes, but nothing immediately blew me away as a *must* return. The pizzas looked good. The regular cacio e pepe looked amazing and everyone said it was great. However, two people got gluten free penne supposedly cacio is pepe but the sauce was totally different and not very good. 5 stars all the way. We visited The Wharf on our recent trip to DC. Its such a happening cute place with tons of food options. We were craving pizza and saw rave reviews online and decided to try. I've gotten the fried seafood from Lupo Marino twice and it's been an absolute killer! It comes with a ton of squid, 3 pieces of shrimp, and 3 smelts, with a side if sauce. The sauce is good, but the seafood doesn't really need it. It's perfectly crispy and seasoned perfectly. I've also gotten the some pasta with braised beef, which was delicious. Overall a disappointing experience, with a shock when we saw the bill at the end of the meal. The food was ok. I ordered the panini (burger) which was good. The fries were good but some were cold and undercooked others were fine and crunchy. It was so intermittent that it was surprising every time I got a cold fry. My wife's pasta had a super small portion of burrata cheese on her "burrata pomodoro" which left the pasta a bit more dry. The kicker was the wine situation. My party of 3 ordered wine, the waitress suggested just getting a bottle of wine. (Which usually is more economical than each person ordering an individual glass for $16.) We ended getting a bottle of the house Pinot noir. We did not need a bottle just thought it was more economical. The wine was merely OK as it was rather watery and not full bodied. We got the bill and BAM! $70 for a bottle of cheap wine. I understand than alcohol licenses cost money and there is a mark up. But we were all shocked and felt like we were taken advantage of. Super glad we only paid for the house wine and did not upgrade to waitress' recommendation. I can't imagine how expensive that would have been. I was so disappointed in the wine after seeing the price on the bill, I looked it up....it costs $9.99 retail. Maybe cheaper if purchased in bulk. But that explains the low quality. I am not a Sommelier, and am usually ok with house wines. We used to come here a lot. But this location changed. Food quality declined and alcohol prices are deceptive. Second visit to Lupo Marino, and it did not disappoint again. Promptly seated for a 6:00 PM reservation despite the restaurant being fully packed, cheerfully and energetically alive, in the best way. The service matched the vibe: warm, attentive, and efficient. Our server was pleasant, and the food arrived quickly, hot, and fresh. The focaccia was light, airy, and golden-brown. I took a moment to admire my pasta (yes, I played with it a little before diving in), and it was worth the anticipation. The Cacio e Pepe with shrimp was rich and comforting: creamy, thick noodles, peppery bite, succulent, fresh, delicate shrimp. OK. I'm raising my rating of Lupo Marino back up to 4 starts because we are learning how to navigate the menu and avoid the mistakes that can come out of this kitchen. To be clear, if you like heavy, cheesy, rich food, then you will love most of the menu. If you prefer a little more restraint, then you must order very carefully. This time I tried the eggplant Parmesan, after the waiter assured me that it wasn't buried in cheese. She was right. The flavor was very good and it wasn't buried in cheese, but it unfortunately was very heavily breaded -- seemingly as much bread as eggplant (Lupo should take a cue from All Purpose in Navy Yard, that knows how to create a rich eggplant Parm without all that breading). Order it to share. The margherita remains the best pizza, with a terrific crust and sauce, but even that pie, limited to discs of fresh mozzarella, has about 50% more of it than you'd find on a real Neapolitan pie. Salads remain good. Just order your dressing on the side to avoid the risk of drowning. It's hit or miss depending on who's in the kitchen. Better to do it yourself. read more

Shout out to Juan for turning disappointment into happiness last night!! We had dinner plans for after my son's meeting at 7 pm but the meeting ran late so we left after 8 pm for dinner and arrived here around 8:30 pm. We were seated immediately and ordered our food. Really disappointing experience. The water was served at room temperature, and didn't offer us to sit outside. The draft beer was warm, which was hard to understand, and when I mentioned it, the server brought me another beer with ice in it. Why isn't the beer cold when it comes out. The food was the biggest letdown. The spaghetti Bolognese was bland, dry, and had barely any sauce. The pasta was also overcooked. It was so disappointing that I couldn't even finish my meal. Considering the quality, the prices are far too high. The only highlight of the visit was the mixed drinks, which were actually good. Went to Lupo Marino on the Wharf last weekend and it did not disappoint! My friends and I went for the bottomless brunch, which is a great deal! $38 for an entree and bottomless mimosas. The portions of food were great. The pizzas were all incredible, the crust was perfectly cooked. The Caesar salad does have anchovies, which I am not a big fan of so I ordered the salad without them and it was great. The restaurant itself was decorated very well, with pictures of Italy everywhere. The servers made sure our drinks were never empty, so definitely recommend for a weekend brunch! read more

Before we came to this place, I was skeptical about the 1-star review mentioning roaches. Thankfully, we didn't see any, but the reviewer's comments about the restaurant being dirty were pretty accurate. One of the first things that stood out to me was the condition of the glasses, the room-temperature water, and the general filthiness of the restaurant itself. Our waiter suggested the meatballs and bread basket as starters, so we agreed to give them a try. Unfortunately, the meatballs were NOT tender, and the sauce lacked any real flavor. It was basically greasy tomato sludge. Even store-bought Ragu has more salt and garlic than this sauce. The bread was another disappointment. It was clearly stale--I'd guess a day or two old--even though we were told it was baked fresh daily. It seemed like they were trying to disguise how old it was by putting it back in the pizza oven and drizzling it with oil to give it some moisture. I also forgot to mention that pretty much everything we ordered came out lukewarm, almost as if it had been precooked and reheated. The one thing that saved this review from being a complete 0/5 was the pizza. The crust was genuinely very good, with a great char and excellent undercarriage. The short rib topping practically melted in your mouth, and the cheese blend was fantastic. Honestly, if this place cleaned up the restaurant and focused solely on their pizzas, I could easily see it being a 4/5. The pizza is the only thing that really makes up for the disappointing appetizers, especially considering the price. If you're looking for a pizza to be delivered, I'd actually recommend giving them a shot. Their motto is apparently "The Italians are here," but I'm not sure how much that translates to the food. Based on our experience, I think an Italian grandmother might have a few words to say about those appetizers. read more

Both pizzas are very rich and heavy. The Piccante was just overly greasy and heavy. The crust was amazing and the dough is crispy but also soft. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to Lupo Marino. I booked a reservation here to dinner prior to a show at The Anthem, and the reviews were pretty decent. However, it didn't live up to the expectations. Upon arriving, my husband and I were shown to a table against the wall that had been set up under some kind of ledge that might normally be used as a bar. I would have had this ledge leaning up against me so I asked if we could move to another table. We were seated at a table in front of the door and the hostess stand, so it was cramped. The tables were extremely packed, I had to use a plastic chair, and the table was wobbly so we had to fix that as well. The day had been a little warm so the door was propped open but when we got to the restaurant, it was really chilly. Since we were right by the door, I asked the waitress if we could shut the door. The waitress said she had to ask the manager and the manager came back and said no. There was a couple next to us who said that they also asked to close the door and the manager said no. My husband ended up getting up and was like Yo dog, it's 40 degrees outside, close the door. They ended up closing the door so like a little sexist? Why will the close a door when a man asks? The waitress asked if we wanted still or sparkling water, and we opted for still. You can imagine our surpris when we found out that we were charged $8.00 for water because we did not specify "tap." We didn't discuss it with the waiter but I thought that was idk, kind of shitty? Everyone knows that you don't pay for the still water We started with the grilled octopus which was ok and we ordered two of the bruschettas. I want to clarify, this meant that we literally got one of each type of bruschetta. I thought we would get like a small plate of both but it was literally two pieces of bread for $12 each. Yikes. I got the short rib pasta which was fine. The sauce wasn't very smooth. My husband got a panini that was also fine but certainly not worth the price tag.
