Man, places like this need to duplicate as much as they can. St. Anselm did not disappoint from start to finish! I was a solo diner for this experience and sat at the bar. The bartenders were friendly, filled waters promptly and were fast. I came in about 5pm on a Saturday and there were only 5-6 other people at the bar, but the dining area was pretty full. This place has an almost pioneer-ish vibe with all of the taxidermy on the walls mixed with like your Uncle's cabin in the woods in the 60s. I was digging it. I started with the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese. Wow. I could have eaten all of them. The bartender and I agreed that it wasn't a good idea. He said he did it once. I also had a mint julep, and while I normally like them, this one was a little different. The presentation was cool, but the drink was all ice, which was disappointing. For dinner I had the Butcher's Steak, medium well (should have gotten medium) and the Brussels sprouts. I'm thinking about the leftovers now. Great location inside Union Market in NE DC, and major bonus, I lucked up with a PRIME parking spot right in front. Not sure about a garage nearby though. We pulled up right after "BEAT THE BOMB" as part of my friend's birthday celebration. There were 7 of us and we were STARVING. My friends were obsessed with the biscuits, like truly raving. I tried them and I didn't quite get the hype, but hey... For entrées, we had a mix of steak, branzino, salmon, and pot pie. My steak was cooked right, flavorful. I also tasted the branzino and that was also a hit. Both were really, really good. Now, mixed reviews from the group: -Salmon was just okay -Pot pie was a no, too salty, but my friend loved the Caesar salad -Brussels sprouts were elite, one of the best I've had, no exaggeration. -I also had the steamed broccoli, simple but good. So overall for me, I enjoyed my food. But as a group, it was kind of split, some hits, some just okay. Now let's talk about the space. The decor was honestly my least favorite part. Coming from the Navy Yard it was about a 10-15 train ride with a short 5 minute walk to the restaurant. The restaurant gave "high class" but with affordable prices. Almost like an upscale bar if that makes sense. The gentleman who waited on me was very attentive and gave one major recommendation, I needed to get their buttermilk biscuits. So, of course I did. They were huge, fresh, and delicious. They do come with a pimento cheese but I was not a fan so I used butter. Either way they were great. I for my entree I got the prime ribeye paired with the pan fried mashed potatoes. It was a lot of food but I had no steak left over to take back to my hotel. The stellar reviews have it right. This is my go to place for steaks. A tight menu where everything is carefully prepared and delicious. Ordering. Many of the steaks and sides are quite large and easily feed two. The 16 oz ribeye is the best example. Tender, juicy and aged on site to perfection. The sides are easily enough for two. The pan fried mashed potatoes are not to be missed. The mushrooms are a perfect complement for the steaks and the creamed spinach is delish. The Wedge salad was perfect for two people to share as we each had our own lettuce head. I'm still dreaming of that thick cut bacon. Oysters were cooked in a garlic butter and served warm. Really well done! For the main we split a 32 oz porterhouse steak and cooked exactly to medium rare. We had them pre slice it in the back. Perfect sear and that filet melted in my mouth. The pan mashed potatoes cooked in bacon fat had incredible flavor and I loved the crispy edges. This is not your boring mashed, it's the best. For dessert and everything is made in house, the ice cream cake was so good, loved the hot fudge and Oreos on top. The carrot cake was just okay. It had a lot of nuts and raisins. I've been living in Union Market for about a year now and walk past St. Anselm all the time, but I'll admit, the menu never really pulled me in since I'm not a huge steak person. I stopped by once a few months ago just for drinks and ended up leaving to eat at a nearby Mexican spot. Fast forward to now, and I finally gave it a real shot (pretty much no other choice ) when my best friend chose it for his birthday dinner. We arrived around 9:15pm, knowing the kitchen closes at 10, so we had to jump right into ordering. I love tequila, but none of the cocktails really spoke to me, so I kept it simple with a tequila + elderflower + soda water which was refreshing and clearly did the job because I ended up having two . The table ordered biscuits as an appetizer, but since I'm gluten-free, I sadly sat that one out. For entrées, we ordered the lamb leg steak, ribeye, and branzino, plus shared sides of sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and creamed spinach. I had never had a lamb leg steak before and was pleasantly surprised - it was so good, especially with the sweet and savory sauce on top. And listen... I am NOT a mushroom person , but somehow those mushrooms ended up being my favorite side of the night. Absolute shocker. For dessert, the group shared an apple crumble, which they loved. Warm fruit desserts aren't my thing anyway and also, gluten-free struggles , so I passed. Beyond the food, the service really stood out. I first dined here back in 2018 or 2019 and decided to give it another try in 2025 and it was completely packed! So packed, in fact, that we had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation for a table to open up. Went with a friend on a Friday afternoon; we were immediately seated (we did have reservations). The restaurant did get incredibly busy at one point, and our server apologized for it, but to be honest, I never felt neglected. I also saw that everyone worked as a team to help one another. We started with the Buttermilk Biscuits and Pimento Cheese, Blue Crab Deviled Eggs, and the Beet & Ricotta salad. I recently took a trip to St. Anslem for my birthday, and the food definitely made my day special. When walking into St. Anslem it gives off a manly-mans vibe. Dark and mysterious with various animals adorning walls and shelves, including the bear skin rug on the wall near the restrooms. We started our evening with the infamous buttermilk biscuits, which I must say are heavenly. These squares of soft, pillowy pleasure are served hot with pimento cheese. We asked for some jam and honey, and all of it was divine. We also ordered some fried okra, which was good even though I'm not really a fan of okra. This was crispy and paired well with the sauce provided. For our entrees I opted for the whole dorade fish, which was accompanied with marinated tomatoes and pickled fennel. Seasoned perfectly and all the flavors paired so well together. My dinner date opted for the ribeye, and it literally melted like butter...perfection. Ambiance was great, dim lighting and candles on the tables. It has a vintage tavern feel in decor and feels very warm and inviting. They had an excellent selection of beers on tap and by bottle. I visited St Anselm once again, on a Monday. It was a warm day so I was trying to stay cool. The train car was cool but the heat blasted everything. I sat at the bar again and the bartender came over. I ordered a German Pilsner and started to look at the menu. I had a good idea what I wanted...but I looked anyway. I order another brew and the food arrives. The potatoes are piping hot. The steak looks great. I let everything cool off a bit. The steak had a perfect sear on it. Came to St. Anselm for a Saturday brunch and had a great time! It was my birthday and they sat us at a fabulous little corner booth that was semi-private and somewhat enclosed. Our table started with coffee drinks -- all were great! And I also tried the eggnog which was phenomenal. Not too sweet and not too thick, just the perfect holiday cocktail. For started we had biscuits and they were incredible!!! Some of the best Ive had. The pimento cheese it's served with is delicious and we also asked for jam which really elevated it. For my main I had salmon collar and eggs with bernaise. It was such a hearty and rich meal. The salmon was moist tender and very flavorful and a huge portion!
