Visiting DC and swung by this establishment for dinner with a group of friends. Overall enjoyable, but there are definitely some items which are hits and other misses. Before getting to the food, I'll first rate the interior excellent. It's big and open, and has a modern yet rustic design, which makes it an excellent atmosphere. They had an impressive list of wines and cocktails, but the draft beer selection was limited. Could use a bit more variety on tap, but I enjoyed the Imperial IPA nonetheless. As for the food; all of it was on the pricey sized given the quality and quantity served, but the salmon collar was by far my favorite -- followed by the chicken, although the chicken was a bit less meaty than I expected. The gem salad, the carrots and the steak fries were all very "meh," and the bisques seemed like small ciabatta buns rather than actual biscuits. All that aside, the biggest disappointment was unfortunately the ax ribeye - it wasn't cooked properly (despite asking for med-rate, depending on the bite, it ranged from medium to very rare), and it was really stringy and fatty - a major disappointment for a steakhouse. Deserts were delicious, I really enjoyed the ice cream cake and thought the peanut butter pie was good. Service was great, prompt and friendly. So I definitely wouldn't recommend this place as a statehouse based on my experience, but would consider coming for the salmon. read more

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take many photos because my phone was dying, but the hostess was incredibly kind and offered to charge my phone for me in their space. Finally got to check out St. Anselm and it did not disappoint! It's a cool vibe for dinner with friends or even a date night. The staff are super attentive to everything going on. They made sure to keep our table clean and gave us new silverware and plates before or entrees arrived. Any food that we did not finish was boxed up and put into bags for us. The manager was actively walking around the restaurant, making sure that every guest were enjoying their dinner. The food was good all around but there are some dishes that outshine the rest. The ribeye and New York strip were very good. The butchers steak I got for my son and he didn't really like it, it was lacking flavor. If you do anything when you go, please make sure to get the biscuits. Hands down THE BEST BISCUITS I've ever had lol. They are the most flaky and buttery biscuits, you can count each layer that these have. Pro tip is to ask for butter and the house made jam. Man, places like this need to duplicate as much as they can. St. Anselm did not disappoint from start to finish! I was a solo diner for this experience and sat at the bar. The bartenders were friendly, filled waters promptly and were fast. I came in about 5pm on a Saturday and there were only 5-6 other people at the bar, but the dining area was pretty full. This place has an almost pioneer-ish vibe with all of the taxidermy on the walls mixed with like your Uncle's cabin in the woods in the 60s. I was digging it. I started with the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese. Wow. I could have eaten all of them. The bartender and I agreed that it wasn't a good idea. He said he did it once. I also had a mint julep, and while I normally like them, this one was a little different. The presentation was cool, but the drink was all ice, which was disappointing. For dinner I had the Butcher's Steak, medium well (should have gotten medium) and the Brussels sprouts. I'm thinking about the leftovers now. WOWZA!!! We went to a special event: "Crawfish Broil" at St. Anselm on an early Sunday afternoon. The theme was featured on Resy and I'm so glad that we got tickets to this event. The decoration was the cutest. We were the first to arrive and had our assigned area with our names written on the table. All of the fixings were also ready hand wipes, lemon, remoulade, homemade hot sauce, Cajun garlic butter, and a bucket of course. We started with the best biscuit I've ever had with pimento cheese. The biscuit was fresh, hot, buttery and flaky and came with fresh pimento cheese. When I tell you they had me at biscuit, the biscuit alone is worth another trip. It was so fantastic we got some to go with their special jam. The crawfish came with a little guide to tell you how to open them (and a cracker if needed). We were fortunate to have two ladies from New Orleans at our table who were able to offer some guidance. The feast was brought out in large metal bowls by a team (including the chef) and it was all great. Crawfish, corn, sausage, shrimp and mussels. The portions were large and plentiful with drinks offered à la Carte. I didn't love my first drink so I switched to a Hugo spritz and my partner had the Hemingway daquiri. After 2 pours/portions of the crawfish boil we were tapped out. Our table mates ordered another round of biscuits and gave us a piece to dip in the butter and I melted again. Everything was so good! Great time at St Anselm! My friend and I tried a number of dishes and everything was tasty. Started with the famous buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese as well as butter/jam and the blue crab deviled eggs. My main was the salmon collar with a side of broccoli, my friend ordered the butcher's steak with side of carrots. Portions for the sides were enormous so we should have looked at pics beforehand. Ambience was very cool- we sat at the chef counter since it was just two of us but there was little interaction with the chefs so probably a regular table would have been better. Great location inside Union Market in NE DC, and major bonus, I lucked up with a PRIME parking spot right in front. Not sure about a garage nearby though. Jackson was our server, and he was super nice and accommodating the whole time. Food wise, I got the blue crab deviled eggs to start and wow, so good. My friends were obsessed with the biscuits, like truly raving. I tried them and I didn't quite get the hype, but hey... For entrées, we had a mix of steak, branzino, salmon, and pot pie. My steak was cooked right, flavorful. I also tasted the branzino and that was also a hit. Both were really, really good. Now, mixed reviews from the group: -Salmon was just okay -Pot pie was a no, too salty, but my friend loved the Caesar salad -Brussels sprouts were elite, one of the best I've had, no exaggeration. -I also had the steamed broccoli, simple but good. While visiting DC for work, I craved the best steak in the area. A few places popped up, but this place caught my attention based on reviews, photos, and the time it would take me to get there from the metro. Coming from the Navy Yard it was about a 10-15 train ride with a short 5 minute walk to the restaurant. The restaurant gave "high class" but with affordable prices. Almost like an upscale bar if that makes sense. The gentleman who waited on me was very attentive and gave one major recommendation, I needed to get their buttermilk biscuits. So, of course I did. They were huge, fresh, and delicious. They do come with a pimento cheese but I was not a fan so I used butter. Either way they were great. I for my entree I got the prime ribeye paired with the pan fried mashed potatoes. It was a lot of food but I had no steak left over to take back to my hotel. I finished my meal with the rainbow sherbet. I spent just about $80 and it was well worth it. The side was large and honestly I could've done without. I will say to their credit, New York strip I ordered was cooked exactly medium rare how I ordered it, although the outside was slightly burnt, which you would hate to see on a medium rare sear. The biscuits are as good as advertised, also had a side of creamy spinach, which was good. The stellar reviews have it right. This is my go to place for steaks. A tight menu where everything is carefully prepared and delicious. Ordering. Many of the steaks and sides are quite large and easily feed two. The 16 oz ribeye is the best example. Tender, juicy and aged on site to perfection. The sides are easily enough for two. The pan fried mashed potatoes are not to be missed. The mushrooms are a perfect complement for the steaks and the creamed spinach is delish. I've been living in Union Market for about a year now and walk past St. Anselm all the time, but I'll admit, the menu never really pulled me in since I'm not a huge steak person. I love tequila, but none of the cocktails really spoke to me, so I kept it simple with a tequila + elderflower + soda water which was refreshing and clearly did the job because I ended up having two . The table ordered biscuits as an appetizer, but since I'm gluten-free, I sadly sat that one out. For entrées, we ordered the lamb leg steak, ribeye, and branzino, plus shared sides of sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and creamed spinach. I had never had a lamb leg steak before and was pleasantly surprised - it was so good, especially with the sweet and savory sauce on top. And listen... I am NOT a mushroom person , but somehow those mushrooms ended up being my favorite side of the night. Absolute shocker. For dessert, the group shared an apple crumble, which they loved. Warm fruit desserts aren't my thing anyway and also, gluten-free struggles , so I passed. Beyond the food, the service really stood out. I first dined here back in 2018 or 2019 and decided to give it another try in 2025 and it was completely packed! So packed, in fact, that we had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation for a table to open up. (Shout out to the host/waiter for giving us a complementary glass of champagne for the extra wait time!) We ordered the biscuits, of course, the giant prawn, the Wagyu steak, and the fried mashed potatoes. The biscuits were good, but I wish they also gave you a sweet topping like honey or some type of jam in addition to the pimento cheese spread. The pimento cheese is really rich so after a few bites, I was over it and wanted something sweet to break up the savoriness. The giant prawn was also good, but I should have ordered the salmon (or yellow tail) collar instead because I do remember that fish collar being very flavorful the first time I dined here. The is a bar and seating right next to their open kitchen. Our server was very pleasant and has great recommendations. You have to try the buttermilk biscuits! Light and flaky with just enough texture on the outside to give it a little crunch. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes for my meal. I was only expecting two pancakes but the order came and it was three pancakes that were pretty big. I could not finish them. I finally made it back to St. Anselm for brunch after trying it once for happy hour, and I'm glad I did. My first visit already gave me a sense of the atmosphere, and brunch just took it up a notch. One of the best meals I've had in awhile. We went here for the viral scratch made biscuits w/pimento cheese. They met the hype, maybe the best biscuits and pimento cheese I've ever had and I spent 10 years living in South Carolina. The server was a very well versed older white guy who helped us multiple times with the menu. The thick cut bacon with the pimento cheese on the biscuit was one of the best bites of my life. The steak I had was cooked perfectly, and had great flavor/texture. My girlfriend got their roasted chicken which was good, it came with a house bbq sauce that tasted just like Peter Lugers steak sauce. I stole it immediately for my steak. Definitely ask for it if you go here and get the steak. The restaurant has a great interior atmosphere, it's dark and kind of feels like an old timey vibe. I have zero notes or criticisms for this place other than I wish I had multiple stomachs so I could've eaten more. read more

Very cool ambiance, nice interior but still casual. The biscuits for the appetizer were absolutely delicious (hint: ask for jelly). The steaks were nothing special in my opinion, no seasoning on them or anything. The mashed potatoes were seasoned like thanksgiving! Service was good. read more
