Kicked off my visit to D.C. with the cutest little breakfast at this French bistro right in our hotel... it was a lovely way to start the trip! The decor was right up my alley: gorgeous details, stunning florals, absolutely beautiful. We both went with the Plat Américain, a classic breakfast with eggs, bacon, crispy fingerlings, and a croissant. A simple but solid choice! The croissant especially was so soft and fluffy, thoroughly enjoyed that. I ordered an iced latte and asked for it to be sweetened, but it came out pretty punchy... I don't think the sweetener made it in! If you're into a strong, bold latte you'll love it, but if you like yours on the sweeter side, just make sure to double check with your server. I had the mussels that comes with fries and a friend of mine had a dish with fish and vegetables. I'd say that for fine dining and just regular restaurant dining in general, it is average at best. My friend also got the limited-edition cocktail that they had, but she didn't like it. The mussels are okay, and the broth that it came in is flavorful, but much of the flavors are missed when eating the mussels and it is hard to get the broth with the mussels together. The fries that come with it originally didn't come with ketchup, and we had to ask for ketchup to be served. The original sauce that comes with the fries isn't that good, since it has a salty onion flavor that doesn't go well with the fries. The dish my friend ordered is nice, since the fish was tender, though the vegetables weren't prepped well enough. As for service, it is good, except that there are times when we had to request for water refill, and also the time when one of the staff walks by and asks us whether we need anything but didn't notice that our waters aren't filled in. Overall, 7.1/10, rounded up for the ambiance and service that comes with it. read more

I recently took my my family to Bistro Du Jour for Mother's Day. She has been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and we were not disappointed. She ended up getting the steak frites and I got the burger American. Hospitality was great. We even met one of the managers of hospitality. It's connected to a hotel so they have pretty extensive hours. The one thing I would say was that the fries were decent but the burger was amazing. The restaurant was beautiful inside, very elegant. What a wonderful experience! The food was absolutely delicious, at competitive prices, and the drinks were top notch, even the mocktails! The deviled egg with caviar was delicious and the salad with salmon I had as an entree were extremely fresh. The salmon was perfectly medium rare, and the wait staff could not have been nicer! I had asked about a bookshop (I was traveling and didn't know the surrounding area) and even though the waitress did not know, she looked it up for me! Cute French dining in the Royal Sonesta hotel. The ambience is great and, more importantly, the food and drink were delicious. Stayed at the hotel and was able to try the latte, dinner and dessert before leaving the area. For dinner ordered the chicken or however you pronounce "Poulet Rôti Au Poireau" (not pictured) to take to my room. Oh my gosh was it good! The sauce and the mashed potatoes with spinach were a perfect combo. Next night went down for a pastry with pistachio cream dessert at the bar. Though this place is definitely cutesy there were a few folks watching Monday night football game at the bar, so still laid-back. I met my friend here for brunch on a Sunday morning. It is located adjacent to the Royal Sonesta Hotel. The bright and dainty interior puts you at ease. The relaxed atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee was just what I needed on a Sunday morning! I had the avocado toast made from a delicious croissant topped with a tasty fried egg on a bed of avocado, arugula, radish slices and pickled onion slices. It was delicious! Bistro Du Jour had excellent brunch. This was our first time eating a French breakfast cuisine and it didn't disappoint. We ordered a hot tea and icetea. Our orders were Oeufs Au Plat, Parfait De Yaourt, and Paris- Brest Au Saumon Fume. The food was soft, fresh, flavorful and very filling. My order was the Oeufs Au Plat. The grilled sourdough bread was so soft and chewy. The toasted almonds and granola were enough, moray sauce was juicy,,Sunnyside egg melted around gave a great taste matched with the sautéed mushrooms. My husband had the Paris-Brest Au Saumon Fume. He commented how incredibly soft the croissant was and everything included, Salmon too, was delicious. We shared the Parfait De Yaourt. A taste of sweet, tart, and great end to our brunch. This place has so much potential! Maybe I went on a bad day ... when I got there the place was pretty busy . The location was great , not too loud, spacious , and beautifully decorated. The drinks were good and the bar was nice and clean. The cons of this place is that it seems there's no assigned sections or it's kind of chaotic at dinner time. People were waiting to get their checks, tables covered with used dishes ( despite the people leaving a hour prior ) . The server cleaned the table and another manager helped pick up . We saw a couple sit and then leave 20 mins later because they never got a server to assist. This place has potential to be great but there are a lot of red flags. A proposal was made that night that's just a tell sign this place is a nice location to take photos, make a memory but I wouldn't become a regular . The bartenders were great and sweet I don't know if they were overwhelmed but most definitely they need to maybe hire more people . read more

This place was recommended to me by my dentist in Chicago who said it was the best French onion soup ever! I came here for lunch with a couple other people. It was not busy on a Saturday and we were seated right away. They only serve brunch on the weekends - I ended up getting the French onion soup and the croque madame. Everything was really delicious and came out quickly. The soup was great - I can't say if it was the best ever but I enjoyed! My sandwich was also good, a little heavy on the béchamel. We decided to do the unlimited brunch drinks which was about 30 dollars for 90 minutes of drinking. The brunch cocktails run about $14-15 so if you want more than 2 definitely do this! We ended up getting 4 or 5 rounds to get our money's worth! Our server was really great and gave us a last call when our 90 minutes was coming up. We also split the pot de creme which was so decadent. Our server brought over all the extra chocolate accoutrements and dressed it tableside which was very cute. read more

This was a company dinner, so the menu was pre-set with many dishes to share at the table. All were very good, some excellent. Stand outs for me were the herbed toast (think crusty bread with escargot butter/herbs without the escargot), the bouillabaise-- fish, good sized shrimp/prawns with the heads on (so you know they had to be pretty fresh), mussels, in a spicy soup--more like a sauce in a shallow dish, with rouille and toast, and something like a soufflé with a gruyère sauce. They also offered French75 cocktails, which as it was a warm day were terrific, and a quite good red wine (not sure if it was the house red or something else--part of the sit down). I often hesitate to consider a restaurant that may be affiliated with a hotel, but this one I would go back to on purpose on my own with my DC. Service was fine--and it's not easy to deal with multiple tables of folks talking hard and also wanting another glass of something. Finally sat down to try this place for lunch, and it was a treat! I've been here before for Happy Hour, and they never disappoint--especially for the price point in the heart of Capitol Hill. Located just a stone's throw from Union Station inside the new Royal Sonesta Hotel, this French bistro is a gem. I needed something simple and quick, so I went with the Burger Américain--and wow, it was so good! A warm, buttery bun, LTO, special sauce, and two juicy, flavorful patties. The french fries with aioli? Delicious! The onions were a bit pungent with each bite, but I eventually took them off--problem solved. I've also been here a few times with colleagues for Happy Hour, and the food is consistently GOOD! I absolutely love their Gougères--these airy, cheesy puffs are light, decadent, and melt-in-your-mouth perfection. And again, the fries? Bomb! For drinks, Colette's Punch is like a super-boozy sangria in my opinion. Definitely worth getting a pitcher if you ask me--trust me on this one! I don't like breakfast. I especially am not a fan of breakfasts at hotels. They're often unimaginative, consist of average ingredients and are hastily prepared, often to their detriment. However, Bistro Du Jour is a notable exception to my general malaise towards breakfast. It's the first time in a long time that a breakfast dish has been put before me and it's like wow. And the flavors match the presentation. I don't nearly make it to DC enough, but I do want to make a return trip specifically to this location to try their brunch, lunch and dinner. Bonus: for all of you commuters, this location is a quick walk from Union Station. If your travel plans are going to hell, forgo the Shakeshack and try something worth your while and probably at the same caloric count. read more

If you are out of luck you may be wasting half an hour waiting in line while your food is getting cold. We came here on a Saturday with a rvsp. We got seated pretty quickly. We ordered the pain perdu and the plat american with 2 coffees. The food took around 10-15 mins to get to us. The plat American was really good. I love the potato fingerlings. They were super crispy and fried to perfection. The croissant was also pretty soft and moist. The pain perdu was the prefect amount of sweetness. I loved the blueberry jam with the Chantilly cream. They mixed together so well making the toast delicious. Here are some of my take aways: Environment It's a beautiful restaurant with huge windows that provides great natural light during the day. They also have some outdoor seating if you're interested in enjoying the weather. The day we were there it was too hot so we decided to dine inside. Service The service was solid. Our server was helpful and guided us through the menu. The drinks and the food all came out in a timely manner and we had everything we needed through out dining experience. Food and drinks I ordered the burger and fries and a side of mac and cheese (yes i'm basic). Hear me out, I love going to a new place and trying their burger plus this place had really great reviews about their burger. And I agree it was a great burger! I would definitely go back to try it. The mac and cheese was pretty good too. My friend really loved her Poulet Roti Au Poireau (Roasted Heritage Chicken, Leeks, Mushrooms, Mashed Potatoes, and Whole Grain Mustard Jus) I would return to try this dish amongst other items! For desert I had the Gâteau Au Chocolat (Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake, Candied Orange, and Vanilla Ice Cream). It was fine but nothing that stood out. My friend had the Crêpes Suzette (Grand Marnier, Candied Orange, and Vanilla Ice Cream). The stand out of this desert was the grand marnier - it was very strong and you could probably get a little tipsy from consuming this item. lol Overall the food was good and definitely worth going back for more. I had dinner at Bistro du Jour this week with some colleagues, and I really enjoyed the meal. We shared a starter for the table - a special of the night: roasted duck croquettes with a fig sauce, that was very good. For my entree I had the Fluke en Papillote (with lemon, garlic, ginger, shiitake mushrooms, tomatoes, and fennel), which I thought was fantastic. The fish was perfectly cooked, and everything that came with it was delicious (that ginger? a surprising touch that I really enjoyed)! We also shared a couple of desserts for the table: a creme brulee and a mini tarte tatin. Both were good (although I'm more of a tarte tatin girl than a creme brulee girl)! I had a great glass of French sparkling white wine. The service was good, and the restaurant is nice - elegant, traditional but fun, comfortable. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal. Okay I promise I literally never come on here, but I felt compelled because our experience today was so odd. How do you completely run out of croissants? At a French cafe?? At 11:00 AM? We had brunch at 11:00 AM and they were out of: all croissants, all muffins, everything on the pastry menu except for (1) the cinnamon roll and (2&3) the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies. But the weirdest part was that no one mentioned this? You'd think the dining experience may start with an update on what's not available, but our waitress and I had some extended banter about the banana bread and I ordered it before she told me they don't have it today. I then tried to order the Sandwich Au Petit Dejeuner and it was only then that she informed us they were completely out of croissants. Being out of stuff is generally fine, but my first instinct was that this French cafe should probably just bake more croissants. This all makes me think the bistro outsources its baking, which is disappointing, because then you end up in situations where you're out of all baked goods well before the brunch period has ended on a Sunday. Separately, the vibes were loud and chaotic. And the options for heat while dining were to (1) sit directly beneath a heater set to one million degrees, or (2) freeze. read more

Fancy fancy!! I had an ever-changing party count for my reservation, which they were so delightfully accommodating of over the phone. I really appreciated that! I kept going back and forth about whether I wanted to meet at this location or the one in the Wharf. Because of parking and centrality, I decided on this one, which is a block away from Union Station. There's plenty of street parking that thankfully doesn't get crowded on a weeknight, so it was perfect. This location is connected to the Royal Sonestra, a lovely looking hotel. As expected from being both a French restaurant and connected to a fancy hotel, Bistro Du Jour is quite fancy itself!! The lighting really sets the mood. There's a fairly spacious bar and plenty of outdoor seating as well. I was able to get seated with the members of my party right at the reservation time... more than half of the party was present. I believe her name was Christina (that's what's on my receipt at least) -- she took wonderful care of our table the entire night. Started with water, then orders for drinks, appetizers, and entrees in a timely manner. I never had escargots so I HAD to get those. The garlic butter broth definitely dominated the flavor... so of course it was delicious and rich! Great first experience. And the baguette on the side was a nice bonus. I got the Coq Au Vin has my main entree. It was a braised chicken leg dish with a yummy broth, mashed potatoes and veggies. I finished it and was quite satisfied! I got a scoop of coconut sorbet to finish the dinner, and it was a refreshing end. I loved the attention to table etiquette, properly placing silverware in between courses. And Christina checked on us regularly for water refills and making sure everyone was OK. For a party of 12, this was beyond efficient. Everyone enjoyed their selections -- while I didn't get a cocktail, everyone loved what they got. Now, I did want a macaron, and that was the one small item that didn't arrive for me, but it was a minor setback that didn't come close to ruining the experience. I was invited to BDJ for lunch by a client. My initial reaction was thay convenience was behind his selection of this restaurant located in the Royal Sonesta Hotel. They clearly understand that their audience is working on or near Capitol Hill and need to make thr most of their lynch time meetings. Friendly servers, are hapotbti share solid recommendations, and i was delighted to have taken their advice. The Croque Madame was delicious, and perfectly executed. From thr bread to the judicious application of bechemal, it was the poster child of the perfect croquet. It was paired with a green salad tossed in a bright vinaigrette, the perfect foil for thr rich melted cheese, ham, bread, etc. Service was spot-on, and the room was bright yet subtly stylish. My mom and I were looking for a nice dinner near our hotel the Bistro checked all the boxes. so we made a reservation. We were greeted and seated immediately. I have some mobility issues which the staff Tended to right away as if I was family. Mom ordered a gin and tonic and I had the manhattan; perfect. The manhattan was the best I've ever had. For appetizers we both had the escargot, it was served in a pot and was delicious. For main courses, mom had the Orzo Al'Homard and I had the Gnocchi Parisienne, both dishes were exceptional. For dessert I ordered the crepes Suzette. I had to take it away because I was so full, but I ate it the next day on the train back to New York and it was great.
