LA GRANDE BOUCHERIE DC -- A Beautiful Ambiance, But Service Fell Short
I came here to treat my friend to dinner for her birthday. We had a few options and ultimately chose La Grande Boucherie because of the ambiance. Unfortunately, while the setting was beautiful, the overall experience was far from the elevated dining experience I expected.
Upon arrival, I wasn't greeted by a host or shown to our table, and it took a while for us to get a server. Thankfully, we met Antonio in the meantime, and he was absolutely amazing! He was funny, kind, and attentive, wished my friend a happy birthday, checked on us several times, brought us birthday drinks, and even let me practice my Spanish with him. Haha! He brought such a warm, welcoming energy to our evening.
When our server, Tim, eventually arrived, he took our order, ensured we received the correct food, and brought us the check. He fulfilled the basic responsibilities of his role, but the service felt transactional. His interactions with us were brief, seemingly never lasting more than a minute, and there was little engagement beyond the essentials. We didn't receive any food recommendations, although, to be fair, we'd already made some decisions while waiting. We landed on the Steak and Fries, Lobster Pasta, Grilled Octopus, and Lamb Chops. We even wondered whether the distance between our table and his other tables contributed to the lack of engagement.
Antonio, however, stepped up in a way that truly made a difference. I would absolutely encourage management to consider him for a server position. His personality, warmth, and attentiveness were exactly what we hoped for from the dining experience.
Another memorable part of the evening involved Emily, a waitress we initially noticed because she was being reprimanded by Steve, who we assumed was a manager based on his attire. Unfortunately, the interaction happened right in front of us. Throughout the evening, he appeared visibly irritated by something happening in the private dining area, pacing back and forth and rolling his eyes. The situation created an uncomfortable atmosphere and felt unprofessional, particularly in a restaurant aiming to provide an upscale experience.
Ironically, once we began speaking with Emily, the evening came to life! She was full of personality, asked whether we were celebrating a special occasion, brought us champagne, asked about our plans for the evening, and checked in on how we were enjoying our meal. She made us laugh, shared fun facts about the restaurant and DC, and made us feel genuinely welcomed. Another woman who also appeared to be a manager eventually approached our table while mentioning Steve and saying she needed to pull Emily away. That was also her first interaction with us.
As we wrapped up, Tim brought the dessert menus while Emily surprised my friend with a birthday scoop of ice cream and wished her a happy birthday. We ended the evening thanking Emily for making the occasion feel special.
Unfortunately, the food and service did not consistently meet the expectations set by the beautiful ambiance. The octopus preparation wasn't our favorite, and without much guidance on the menu, we essentially made our selections blindly. More importantly, the service experience was inconsistent, and the most memorable hospitality came from Antonio, who wasn't even our assigned server, and Emily, who was managing responsibilities elsewhere.
I came expecting an elevated dining experience. Instead, parts of the evening felt more like watching a reality show unfold than enjoying fine dining.
The ambiance is beautiful, and Antonio and Emily deserve recognition for their warmth and hospitality. However, management has an opportunity to improve the guest experience, from the initial welcome and attentiveness at the table to how staff are treated in front of diners.
Beautiful surroundings can set the mood, but genuine hospitality is what makes an experience memorable. In this case, Antonio and Emily were the highlights of our evening. read more
