Even with the place buzzing and a big event underway, the team stayed gracious, noticed the delay in my food arrival, and automatically discounted my bill, then surprised us with a complimentary glass of champagne to honor my little party of one celebrating a career milestone. The food was delicious, the service was thoughtful, kind and top notch, and the whole experience felt genuinely special. Had another fantastic meal at Le Diplomate! My friend ordered the beef bourguignon, and I had the steak frites. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!), we filled up on their incredible homemade bread, so neither of us could finish our entrées. We somehow managed to save room for dessert, though. I ordered the profiteroles--which, honestly, are one of the main reasons I keep coming back. They are that good! My friend had the crème au chocolat, which was also outstanding. Our waiter, Yassine, was attentive, friendly, and provided excellent service throughout the meal. I also want to recognize a waitress named Ellie, who was serving the table next to us. She had the misfortune of dealing with an incredibly rude and abusive couple, yet she handled the situation with remarkable professionalism, patience, and grace. Another great experience last night on an exceptionally busy summer Saturday. Service is typically always reliable though our server yesterday was particularly professional, warm, and understated. To switch things up, we did skip the escargot though after some misses at other spots recently, Le Dip is the only place in the area where I will continue to order. The tuna carpaccio was light and bright and the crispy artichokes were fantastic. Next time we'll add the escargot back into rotation and share a steak au poivre, which my husband had last night. Wow, what a fantastic spot. Visited last week with coworkers and had such a great time. We sat on the patio and the place was packed even on a Monday night, which says a lot. Pablo took amazing care of us, super kind, knowledgeable, and his recommendations were spot on. I got the Kir 75, a mix between a Kir Royale and a French 75, and it was SO good. One of my coworkers and I shared the warm shrimp salad and the steak frites, both delicious. The kitchen even split the dishes for us beforehand which was such a nice touch. I went to this little bistro for lunch and so glad I was able to check it out! The flavors were outstanding. It truly felt as if I was transported to a little bistro in France. I was a solo diner and felt perfectly cared for. The food came out in a timely manner, I was not rushed, and was so happy with the quality of the food, especially given the price. The soup was unique and creamy, with a nice rustic but delicate flavor. The artichokes were perfectly crispy and so light! The aioli it came with was spot on. The fries were crispy and thin, a classic fry but cannot go wrong. One of the stars though, which is unexpected, was the free bread basket?! There was a cranberry nut bread and it was unlike anything I've ever had. Sweet and perfect with some salted butter. Not to mention, all the bread was so soft and fresh! Finally made it to Le Dip! We swung by during the pride parade for a quick snack. We did not have a res but were able to be seated within a few minutes around 4pm! Our server was very attentive and timely. We got a few things to share including the famous bread basket, gougeres, and pommes frites. The bread included the brown bread, a sourdough, and baguette. I found the first two to be a little dense and chewier than I liked but the flavors were great. The frites were also delish, hard to go wrong! The cold brew was fine, but it was probably the only thing that didn't fully land for me. I prefer my cold brew very strong and bitter, and this one was a bit milder than my ideal. Still solid, just not a standout based on my personal preference. The Kir 75, on the other hand, was excellent. It was bright, refreshing, and very well made. Both pastries were fantastic. The chocolate croissant had a beautifully flaky exterior, while the inside stayed soft, rich, and chocolatey. The kouign amann was equally delicious, with the kind of flaky, crunchy texture that makes it hard to stop eating. The Gruyère omelette was another highlight. The cheese was melty and creamy without overpowering the dish, and the herbs kept everything balanced. The roasted potatoes on the side were also very well done. The burger stole the show for me. The house-made brioche bun was toasted perfectly--firm enough to hold together a rich double-patty cheeseburger without getting soggy or falling apart. We went to Le Diplomate on Sunday for dinner. Reservations were completely booked (which we expected), but we decided to pop in anyway to see if we could grab a drink or possibly get seated. They quoted us a 30-minute wait, but it ended up being closer to 10 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The food, as always, was excellent. I ordered the steak au poivre -- one of my favorites -- and it did not disappoint. The sauce is absolutely incredible and so flavorful. We also tried the crispy artichoke appetizer, which was new for us and really delicious, along with the French onion soup, which I typically love. The only downside this visit was the service. I completely understand they were busy, but our server didn't mention any specials or make recommendations, which felt a bit unlike the usually polished experience here. The biggest issue was that when we each ordered our own appetizer, the waiter decided to split the French onion soup without asking. We hadn't indicated we were sharing, and splitting it unfortunately ruined the presentation -- we ended up with two half-filled bowls without the classic fully crisped cheese top we had requested. It definitely took away from one of my favorite dishes. When we later ordered the steak, we made sure to clarify not to split it. Overall, I'll absolutely be back. To set the scene, I have been wanting to try Le Dip after leaning into my new love of the French cuisine. I would say I have pretty high standards for the staple dishes that I love so I was interested to see how this compared. The service was great- I felt like the food came out at a good pace and our waitress was very sweet. The ambiance of the restaurant was a solid dimly lit space- the tables were pretty close together as DC does, but it wasn't too bad (even with two peacoats stacked on my booth side). As for the most important part- the food. I love free bread, especially when not every restaurant takes part in this glorious act anymore. I preferred the baguette, but the fruity bread is good if you like a more sweet, dense bread. The butter is nice and salty. Unfortunately, the escargot was my least favorite part of the meal, which is usually the French dish that I most look forward to. There was too much fat, whether that be butter or oil, that was sitting on top of the snails that completely overpowered any flavor that the garlic and herbs would have provided. The baguette also wasn't cut up, which wasn't a huge deal, but it just creates more of a mess to do it yourself. The steak au poivre was, by far, the best thing I had all night. I usually go the filet if that is an option, but the strip steak was heavenly, mostly due to their amazing sauce. It was zingy, rich, savory, and paired perfectly with the seasoned steak. I ordered medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. I usually eat around the fat on steaks, but pairing small pieces with a bite of steak was melt in your mouth worthy. As steep as the price may seem ($48), it is well worth it and a great treat yourself meal (which we all deserve). The garlic spinach was a tad salty for me, but it paired well with the dish and I appreciate an entree option that includes a vegetable. I was really looking forward to the bread basket since the loaves of bread are full on display when you first walk in. My favorite was easily the cranberry walnut--slightly sweet and well textured. The ricotta ravioli really highlighted the freshness of the plum tomatoes. While the flavor was surprisingly bright, I would say you can skip this appetizer. The duck à l'orange was rich without being overly fatty, and it paired well with the bed of spinach and fingerling potatoes. The sauce was sweet and savory with the perfect amount of tang from the citrus. The beef bourguignon's tender chunks of beef complemented the creamy mashed potatoes and red wine sauce. It was about an hour wait as a walk in on a Saturday around 5-6 pm. My phone was about to die, so I asked the reception desk to charge it for me, which they kindly did. That said, once seated, the service felt somewhat rushed. I stopped by for an early 4:30pm dinner reservation in hopes to avoid the dinner rush (by the time when I left at 6, the place was packed) and luckily the place was still relatively empty. After a cold acknowledgement by the front staff and confirmation of my reservation, we were led to a table by the windows right next to the door that leads to the outdoor dining area. A few times during the meal, we had to swat away 1-2 fruit flies which was unpleasant. After placing our orders with the friendly waitress, we were given a bread basket with a bit of butter. For appetizers, we got the escargot and mushroom tart to share. The escargot dish also came with a small loaf of bread for dipping. Honestly I had too high of an expectation for this dish as the flavor didn't really blow me away. I ate the snails on it's own and it tasted like snails with garlic butter. The mushroom tart was pretty nice though I wish it had more mushrooms on it besides just a thin layer on top. It was more pastry than mushrooms as a dish. As the restaurant gets busier, prepared to be ignored as if you don't exist. It was really hard to flag down our waitress to clear the dishes. It seemed like whomever was assigned to your table is the only person that will acknowledge your table. Kitchen staff brought out appetizers and entrees but other than that, no other interaction with any other staff. We got the beef bourguignon and roast chicken. It was half a chicken, it would've been nice if they offered to debone or cut it up for you. The beef was pretty good and tender but a bit salty. I liked the addition of the thick bacon pieces and mushrooms. The mashed potatoes was a good pallet cleanser for when I felt like I couldn't eat anymore. The roast chicken was also pretty good but nothing spectacular. The highlight of the meal was surprisingly that they remembered I mentioned celebrating a birthday and provided us with complementary dessert and a birthday candle! It was a pastry topped with whipped cream and raspberry. Our waitress was so busy but still tried to make sure we had good service. Checks were paid at the table via scanning a QR code on the receipt which was convenient. I don't know if this is a trend with DC restaurants but staff seem to ignore you after you finish paying or are leaving the restaurant. This was my experience with this restaurant and also another one where I dined in. This was the best meal that we had in DC, and the free bread definitely lives up to the hype! It's incredible. We were sat in the solarium area, and it was during the heat dome, and it was really warm in there. Otherwise, though, it's completely charming inside and reminds us of some of the best French bistros we've been to in the country (e.g. Balzathar, Le Supreme). The three cocktails we tried--the frose, le jardin, and the clouseau--were all stunners. And of course the bread deserves another special mention, *especially* the room temperature butter. Thank you for not serving hard as hell butter! We shared the warm shrimp salad to start, and for $31, we were expecting more than a few avocado slices and 4 shrimp on it, but c'est la vie. The dressing was incredible, and the greens were crunchy. That's actually the only dish of the night that we thought was unfairly overpriced. One of us ordered the burger and the other got the rabbit pappardelle--you've got to get rabbit when you see it on a menu, which isn't often enough! There was a good amount of super tender meat and the pasta was perfectly al dente, all in a lightly stunning sauce. Chef's kiss. The burger was, no surprise, another triumph. There was juicy meat, bun integrity, and all the right accouterment notes. The fries are standard. Our daughter got their mac-n-cheese, which is probably just the gratin dish renamed. It was OK. We kind of got out of control for dessert and ordered the pot de creme, the cookie dough ice cream, and the profiteroles. Honestly, these were all good, but nothing that stood out as exemplary as with the savory stuff. Our only major complaint was the service. It was really spotty and while there was a very, very long gap in between when we got our water and then put in our drinks, but our mains came out almost directly after the salad. And the guy was just not very hospitable. Not necessarily a "bad" experience...it just could have been a lot better. The duck had a perfect balance of fattiness and texture, melting in my mouth with each bite. The sunny side egg on top added to the flavors and the potatoes were delicious with some notes of truffle oil. Only thing I would have liked is for more duck to be added to the dish. Aside from that, the flavors were spectacular. Buttermilk pancakes were amazing! SO fluffy and buttery soft. The scrambled eggs were delicious and the bacon was prepared just right. It wouldn't be right if I didn't recommend that you try their breads lol it's soooooo good. They were able to seat us immediately despite being busy. They had an indoor/outdoor area which we were seated at because of the pups, it was warm, cozy, and just overall great vibes! French food with American-sized portions! For French food at this price point, we did not expect to see that much food on the plate. That is no knock on the quality, however. Every entree had its highlight, but also an opportunity for small tweaks (except dessert). The Veal Escarole was creamy and luscious but could but just slightly more tender. The fish in the Trout Amandine was cooked very well, but, though it looked the part, the skin of the fish was not crisp. The pickled beans and olives on the side of the fish were fantastic. The farmers cheese was a great appetizer with the mint providing an unexpected twist. The dish of the night though was DESSERT! The profiterole was excellent and has a thin sugar layer that provided a delicate crunch. The ice cream filling was a nice surprise compared to the usual cream. Service was average overall. The restaurant was dimly light but lively and decked out in Christmas decor. I am looking forward to coming back the next time I visit Washington DC! read more
