Note that Sizzle and Crunch IS OPEN for TAKEOUT during COVID! I came here at noon (the earliest they opened) with my friend. We were the first ones in line and so service was quick. I ordered a rice bowl with half salad and half rice and half tofu and half chicken. I also got fried egg and all toppings except for jalapeños because I wasn't feeling spicy that day. The server was very generous with his portions- maybe too generous because the poor guy at the end of the assembly line struggled to close the lid on mine! My total came out to around $11. My rice bowl was very fresh and tasty and I love that you can customize it to your liking. I wish the server had been a little more generous with the green sauce though (I'm not entirely sure what's in it, but it's like a spinach or pesto aioli). My egg was perfectly fried and I was able to mix the yolk into the rest of my bowl. All servers were wearing masks and gloves. They also have a plastic barrier between you and the server, but they have not installed a plastic shield near the cash register. I also noticed that while all employees were wearing the proper safety gear, the cook was not wearing his mask over his nose and therefore was wearing it improperly. Sizzle additionally has an Okay health rating, but they've had that rating since even before COVID. I'm just glad it no longer has a Needs to Improve rating. Within the u-district, sizzle&crunch is hands down the GOAT. Their bowls are only $10-12 and their portions are very generous. While sometimes the service workers are a hit or miss, the food makes up for it. If it's your first time there, don't be too hesitant on the jalapeno (green) sauce. Never skip the over easy egg. Extra green sauce if you know what's good for you. The workers in there are getting killed, food safety is questionable but I wouldn't have it any other way. I usually get takeout from this place and I don't tend to take pictures of take out. I've tried all of their meats in a bowl and they're all good. After, you can choose from a variety of toppings including an egg for an extra cost. Finally, you can add fish sauce or soy sauce on the side. I usually put everything in my rice bowl with fish sauce. Off to the side, there's bottle of sriracha to add to your meal. First time I was here I got the Grilled Pork Bahn Mi. The bread and ingredients were super fresh, but for some reason the pork tasted like kerosene. That flavor made it very difficult to finish the sandwich. Second time, I got the Grilled Chicken Rice Bowl and it was absolutely delicious. Normally, they give enough food that I can save the other half for later. My first visit to Sizzle&Crunch was a couple years ago when I was up here on a work trip. As is to be expected, I got a chicken rice bowl -- with egg, why does everybody ahead of me in line always seem to ask for their bowl or bahn mi without egg when that's practically the best part? --  and it was solid but nothing particularly special. I would have given it a generous 4 star rating at the time. But Sizzle&Crunch has upped their game over the past couple years. It might all be attributable to that spicy, green sauce. It was really, really good this last time, with all of the ingredients working together to make this cohesive whole of flavor. My only complaint now is that I live over in Kirkland, across Lake Washington from Sizzle&Crunch. While the food is certainly good enough to entice me to make the trip around the lake, I'd really appreciate it if Sizzle&Crunch opened a location nearby. The reason why it's not 5 stars is that it's inconsistent and at time feels dirty. And I almost always come out of there with jalapeno in my rice bowl although I never ask for it. Generally the quality is fine but if it's after lunch rush, the meat will be less warm and less tasty. I can see why Sizzle & Crunch is so popular. Its a quick fast and in my option a healthy option for any meal. Do arrive early, it tends to get busy. But luckily the line goes pretty fast. Like Subway or any poke place, they have an assembly line kind of style. Choose either a banh mi or a salad/rice bowl. Once they've filled your bun or bowl, tell them what toppings/veggies you want, pay and then you're on your way. I ordered the BB special banh mi ($6.88): Grilled pork, pork belly slice, and a fried egg. Not a cilantro lover? don't worry, you can go sans-greenery. I kind of missed the pickle dikon radish, but over all the banh mi was tasty. I don't find it authentic, but is catered to the western palette. And the prices aren't too bad either. The bowls will cost you under $10 while the banh mi are priced under $7. There are so many places to eat on the Ave. I think you should see what selections there are. I've heard really good things about this place from classmates and reviews on yelp, so I finally stopped by a few days ago after a Saturday morning class with friends. When we arrived, they weren't open yet so we waited outside. I've been asked by friends to try the banh mi here to give my judgment on whether or not it's authentic and I was surprised (and disappointed) by their selection. Not only do they not have pate, an essential component of banh mi, but they also don't have cha which is one of the most traditional banh mi meat. I ended up ordering the pork belly banh mi with all the toppings except jalapeños and got the green sauce they had on the side. I would describe the banh mi as what Americans think Vietnamese food is. It may somewhat look like banh mi but the taste is so far from authentic that if I was blindfolded, I would guess it was just some sandwich with no connection to banh mi. It feels almost wrong to call it Vietnamese. I didn't order the rice bowl that others have written reviews about so I can't speak about whether it's authentic. Aside from my rant on its authenticity, I admit that they give you a huge portion of meat. The pork belly was fairly spicy which I didn't expect and overall the banh mi would be pretty dry without some kind of sauce. I'm not sure what the green sauce I had was but it was pretty good. Overall it was a pretty decent sandwich but for ~$11, I wouldn't come back. If you came here looking for authentic banh mi, then you would be very disappointed. I let my mother try some and she had nothing good to say about it. For the price, you can buy 2 actual banh mi elsewhere as well. However I think if you're looking for something Vietnamese-inspired then it may work to satisfy your cravings. But for all the hype I heard around this restaurant, I left disappointed. read more

Sizzle and Crunch was suggested to me by a UW student, and it indeed lived up to the hype. The restaurant is a very fast, casual place, almost like Chipotle but for Vietnamese food. You can build your own rice bowl (just like Chipotle) and add a protein (chicken, beef, pork mostly) and some vegetables on top. If you want, you could also trade out the rice for some bread to make it a customized bahn mi sandwich. For me, I usually get a rice bowl, because they're very good value for the $7-8 that you pay. I've tried the chicken and the pork, and both are seasoned very well. The marinade is a bit sweet, and the meat has a nice grilled flavor that blends very well with the rice. As for toppings, I got cucumbers, picked carrots, scallions, and tomatoes. The carrots were a bit sour, and it took a while to get used to. For an extra dollar, I also got a fried egg with my rice. This bowl usually can last me 1.5 to 2 meals, as it's pretty big. Service here is usually pretty quick, and the workers are quite friendly. Especially if you want a balanced, easy solution for a meal, this place is perfect because it offers carbs, protein, and veggies in one convenient bowl. Would absolutely recommend. read more

I've been to Sizzle & Crunch a handful of times now, and it's a great place to pick up something quick and inexpensive, yet tasty. I usually opt for a banh mi (usually chicken) with the added egg on top. Although it is a flat price no matter the toppings (except the egg), they definitely don't skimp on the toppings. Definitely get some of that green sauce - so good! The meat/toppings/bread ratio is good! They do a nice job with the bread as well - it's not so crunchy that it scrapes the roof of your mouth. Also, I've taken this to go and eaten it about 45 minutes later and it held up well! The only downsides I see are: 1) If you come here later in the day (like around 6 or 7) they are often out of banh mis, which I assume just means they are out of bread, since all the other ingredients are the same. This has happened to me a few times now, so it clearly wasn't just a one time thing. 2) The space can get really smoky since the kitchen is sort of open and they cook the meat right in front of you. For this reason, I usually opt to take my food to go.. just something to be aware of! I'm glad this place is here - it's often a place I go to when I work late and just want to pick up something quick! read more

The portion was smaller, and they did not give me peanuts even though i said i want every topping. I think you really need to read every topping out loud for them, or else they will forget some toppings. The meat was worse than usual as well, it was mostly tendon which made my teeth hurt. The poor visit did not end there.. i went to the bathroom and they did not refill the toilet paper.. not only that, they forgot to put the garbage can out too, so i cannot throw my empty container away.. I also found out their food safety rating is the worst, which is "needs improvement". Vietnamese chipotle is the perfect description for this place. It's yummy, nutritiously balanced, and it had a lot of options. But also similar to chipotle (or shitpotle if you are from Boston), this place had a "Needs to Improve" for the most recent food safety rating. This basically means "the restaurant was either closed by Public Health - Seattle & King County within the last year or the restaurant needed multiple return inspections to fix food safety practices". Do I love this place? Absolutely. Am I concerned about that "Needs to Improve"? Absolutely. So yea. Until they fix the food safety issues, it's gonna remain a 3.5 stars for me. read more
