Taurus Ox is great! I've heard about this place from many friends in the past and never got the chance to go until recently. Lao food is quite unique, niche in Seattle, but the dishes are so well made. When entering we are greeted by friendly staff and a clean chill ambience. The food again is great- my friends and I shared a few dishes including the braised pork belly and a noodle soup that came w a Chinese donut (youtiao) ontop. Taurus Ox did not disappoint! I felt all the dishes and drinks we ordered were executed well and tasted as expected. I get why they are known for their Lao Burger. It was delicious and perfectly cooked with balanced and harmonious flavors waking up my tastebuds. That goes the same for the amazing flavors and generous portion-size of their Thom Khem dish which is Caramelized Pork Belly and Tamari-Cured Hard-boiled Egg Stewed with ginger, garlic, and warming spices. As if that's not enough, it is served along with a brussel hash brown, pickled fresno chili, atop jasmine rice. For the drinks my party ordered, I recommend the refreshing Tamarind Soda which instantly transported me to the famously humid tropical weather of Southeast Asia. The two shareable appetizers we ordered were perfect for 4 people and was a nice introduction to the main dishes we ordered. The Lao Beef Jerky and Nam Khao were tasty and delightful bites. Street parking available. The restaurant is clean with lovely decor, indoor and patio seating. It has a warm and welcoming ambiance. Laotian, neighborhood restaurant with lots of free street parking nearby. We came around 7 pm on a Tuesday, and it was busy but we were seated and met our waiter promptly. My partner and I shared the two vegan options on the menu (a curry and a noodle dish and added tofu to both.) My partner was *obsessed.* He thought the food was absolutely outstanding. I thought they were very good but I'm just generally not a huge curry fan. Pricing was reasonable for the quality of food but it wasn't a super large portion. Have been meaning to try this place for awhile! Came in on a weekday evening for dinner (around 6:15?) and we got a table right away. Interior is dark and woody? Lots of ox decor haha. Kinda funny though because it doesn't immediately feel like southeast Asian? Maybe a mix of western and Asian Service is a littttle slow, but the food and everything came out fast. I ordered the lemongrass limeade soda, the Lao burger, and mango sticky rice. The soda was super refreshing, and wasn't too sweet. The Lao burger was super yummy and juicy. I liked the sauce and veggies, but I wish they had added more. The patties were also a tad too salty in some spots. I also tried the Lao sausage entree which comes with rice and sides of veggies. The sausage and sauce were really flavorful, but the veggies didn't really pair well with it. The menu also says you get a choice of rice and sauce, but the server never asked what we wanted. Visited son in Seattle and he took us for some Laotian cuisine. Now I don't recall having Laotian cuisine so it was a great experience. I left it to the young ones to order and they selected all the famous must haves from the limited selection menu. I do not know what they ordered but I enjoyed the food. The playing was beautiful and all the dishes had great flavor and texture. The only dish I didn't care for was the one I picked.... Thom Khem, the caramelized pork belly. It was just too common and did not wow me. The service was attentive and the restaurant was nicely decorated and cozy. A bit dark but the ambiance was inviting. We got the lao burger, Nam kao and a side of their sausage. Lao burger -- was sooo good. It had a thin patty with crispy edges from it being smashed. There was cured pork belly which gave it that "bacon" aspect of a burger. This was a thicker cut of "bacon" but it went well with the beef. Think ham? The pickled red onions on the burger were refreshing and it cut the greasiness of the burger. Sauce was there but never overpowered, it added to all the flavors of the protein. Highly recommend and would come back for this. Nam khao -- surprisingly very addicting. All of the flavors went well together. At first I thought there wasn't much flavor but you just have to mix everything and give it a squeeze of lime. All of the components went well together. Get a little bit of the meats, the peanuts, the chilis, the crispy rice and wrap it up. The perfect bite. It's so easy and refreshing to eat that you want to keep on eating. I love the crispy aspect of this. Sausage -- so flavorful. You can really taste the lemongrass but you can get a hint of everything. I would say the sauce is a little bit salty but I just didn't dip much. It had a nice chew but it's not like a crunchy sausage. I liked eating it with a side of the lettuce. Service overall was great. We got checked on a few times. Server was nice and recommended us some dishes since we were indecisive. We didn't catch them during a busy period so we didn't have to wait. We went evening time during the weekday. Ambiance was nice but I think the chairs weren't that comfortable after sitting for some time. It was also cold bc the door was open. This was an amazing restaurant! I came here with some friends that had been here several times before and highly recommended it. This is a cute Laotian restaurant with some interesting options that I hadn't seen before (granted I hadn't been to a Laotian restaurant before this). We ordered the Nam Khao to share and I ordered the Phad Lao. My favorite was the Nam Khao. The rice was crispy and had a nice lime flavor. The restaurant was also pretty accommodating for dietary restrictions. They were happy to replace the pork skin with tofu in the Nam Khao for my Muslim friend. Everything here was SO good!! I was hesitant at first to come here since I've grown up eating khmer food and thought it would just be okay compared to what I've had or too similar. I wish I came sooner. It was like my cultural food, but elevated. Nam khao was the big hit, I love the texture and we fought over who could get the leftovers for this. Thom Khem was good, I liked the brussel hash, it wasn't as amazing as people made it out to be, the main was definitely the best with a great sauce. Taurus Ox has been on my list for quite some time. It's a bit out of the way being tucked on the outskirts of Cap Hill but I highly recommend Ox Burger, their spinoff store for the popular lao burger which is in a more convenient location closer to the heart of Cap Hill. I think what sets Taurus Ox apart is the ambiance and service. We were wonderfully greeted and staff took the time to explain the menu while offering recommendations based on our preferences. Lao Sausage Entree - tasty, fatty pork sausage with a mix of seasonings, spices, and aromatics. Quite a few flavors going on including spiciness, saltiness, and savoriness. The rest of the dish is simple with the rice and vegetables, but those clean ingredients balance out the fatty pork. Portion and as a result, value, is a bit underwhleming though. Phad Lao - love my pad thai as a comforting dish. While tasty, the dish isn't anything spectacular as it's very similar to other stir fried noodle dishes. Solid portion though, great for sharing in groups to help supplement other dishes. Lao Burger - this has been and likely will always be the star of the show. Everyone recommends the burger and I can see why. They offered to cut our burger into three for us which was kind. The bun is soft and slightly sweet, like the Hawaiian rolls. Inside are two smashed, juicy, tender patties accompanied by a plethora of contrasting flavors that enhance one another. In terms of the food, the Lao burger smashed patties were relatively on the saltier side, but what's worth mentioning is the bright herbs and pickles that kept each bite from feeling one-note. Phad Lao brought a sweet-savory noodle profile that rounded out the table nicely. The Khao Piak Sen was comforting with chewy rice noodles in a thick, soothing broth, however the broth lacked depth (the Chinese donut was crispy, yet doughy). What's been consistent for the past few times I have been here are the lao sausages (though they're not pictured). Those 8 oz sausages with the jeow bong or the jeow som sure hits the spot! Where the experience fell short was service. After being seated, our party was never really checked on; had to flag servers down and make prolonged eye contact just to get our order in, there wasn't a quick "how is everything?" even as the room stayed relatively manageable but they were more than happy to hand our table the check, which made the meal feel more transactional than it needed to be. read more

Been wanting to try the Lao Burger forever. And finally, we were going to a show in Seattle, so I asked my bf to take us here for dinner before the show. We got here at 7pm on a Wednesday night, and they were pretty busy. The bar was open for seating, but we decided to wait about 15 min for a table. I ordered the Lao Burger to share with my bf, and I also had to try the Nam Khao. My bf ordered two orders of the Chicken Wings as his entrée with a side of rice. I also ordered the Tamarita, and he ordered the Ox Mule. Everything was delicious. We really enjoyed the Lao Burger. We liked it so much, we ordered another to go. The Nam Khao was good, but I should've asked for more lime and ordered a side of chili oil. I thought the chicken wings were a bit salty, but probably better if I ate it with more rice. i'd heard some really good things about this burger - so was pretty excited to try it let's start with the bun. there are a lot of places that get the bun wrong - but this isn't one of them. the inside and outside of each bun is really well charred to a point where it's not soft but still goes easily through your mouth to make each bite satisfying. the bun is also sauced really well the pork belly is fantastic - it's full of fat and flavor. I do wish it was placed above rather than below the smash patties though - because i didn't really taste it at all until i moved it to be above the smash patties speaking of the smash patties - i'm a little confused on that front. the description says two but i was only able to make out one. maybe they just fused together somehow but for me i pretty much only noticed one smashed patty - it was pretty thick, so i can't complain too much, while eating. I do think i prefer regular patties to smashed patties though - as you lose a lot of the juiciness as far as the taste of the smash patty(ies) i thought it was really good. you can tell these were grilled really well based on the smoky, flame-based flavor present throughout the meat. these were also a perfect texture for what a smashes patty should be the cheese was another hit. you know it's perfectly melted when after taking a bite of the burger your hands are essentially dripping with cheese, along with the jaew bong mayo - which itself was pretty good adding to this dish were the onions - which i could eat an entire dish just of did think the cilantro was alright - didn't quite fulfill its role as the lettuce replacement as good as i expected the biggest thing holding this burger back in my opinion was the lack of any real non-umami flavor. if there was some spice, even a little bit, that would elevate the burger to a whole another level I considered getting the chili oil to pour over the burger, but didn't feel like paying extra for that For this reason, I can't call this the 'best burger in seattle' - but it's probably the best burger i've had in a while i thought the portion size was also near perfect - maybe just a tiny bit small read more

We were excited to visited Taurus Ox after eating at their burger place over on Capital Hill. We don't have too much experience with Lao cuisine and are always on the lookout for new dishes to try. Taurus Ox seemed to be the perfect next stop. This particular restaurant, located in a more residential area east of Capitol Hill, was relatively quiet for Friday lunch when we walked in. Upon opening the front door, we immediately smelled the fragrance of jasmine rice in the air, whetting our appetites. That seemed like a promising start. We were quickly led over to one of the booths towards the rear and ordered a couple of dishes: Lao Beef Jerky ($16) - This is an interesting but simple dish, consisting of thinly sliced beef jerky pieces on top of a bed of sticky rice. The jerky isn't bone dry like western jerky, but rather has some moisture and more of a tender chew. The beef is surprisingly flavorful, being very beefy and aromatic with ginger and lemongrass. They leave some of the fat on, giving a bit of contrast in mouthfeel and texture. I found the sticky rice to be a little dried out, like they had left it exposed to the air awhile, allowing a skin to form. It's not really ideal, but the interior of the sticky rice was fine. This dish comes with a side of jaew som. It's full of fishy umami, extremely fresh herbal tasting, with a light tanginess, and a slight kick at the end. (4/5) Lao Burger ($18) - This burger can be described with only several words: dry, tough, desiccated. There is something seriously wrong with the burger preparation at Taurus Ox - it's nothing like the balanced and flavorful dish served at their sister restaurant. The burgers are smashed only gently and aren't fried at high enough heat, resulting in floppy pucks without much lacy caramelization. Yet they are also somehow extremely dry inside, not to mention very salty, necessitating going through several cups of water. There's some funky cheese melted in between the two patties, which I would think would add some fat and moisture to the dish, but it's also somehow dried out and tough. The slice of pork belly on the bottom also doesn't help; it's completely overcooked, rendering it a tough salt bomb. I feel like they screwed up and forgot to add the jaew tomato, a critical piece that's really needed to moisten things up. I believe they also didn't add nearly enough of the jaew bong mayo on the bottom slice of bread, I found a certain aromatic and funky flavor, but it also didn't contribute much moisture. Unlike the crisp thicker cut taro stem in the burger at Ox Burger, it's thinly shaved here so it doesn't contribute any texture. At least there are pickled onions on top, slightly fishy and umami, to give some crunch. Overall the flavor profile in general is very good, but the dryness of the whole concoction is unforgivable. I would never order the burger at Taurus Ox again. (2/5) Thom Khem Bowl Lunch Special ($20) - I think this is a half size portion of the $28 entree Thom Khem. It includes a bed of jasmine rice, fragrant and perfectly cooked; a bit of a soft bite giving great mouthfeel. There's half an egg on top, hardboiled and marinated well, then cut in half and pan fried, giving a fried skin (think tiger egg). They serve the dish with some mustard greens. Based on the presentation and serving temperature (cold), I believe they are blanched, iced, then hand wrung before being placed in the bowl. The leaves aren't too bitter for being mustard greens. Some chopped fresno peppers give a bit of a kick. Then we arrive at the star of the dish: the pork belly. Unlike some other places around Seattle that served "pork belly" but actually use cheaper cuts of pork shoulder, Taurus Ox uses full fat belly, albeit skinless. The pieces are cooked until fall apart tender and are braised in a liquid that almost becomes gravy-like in consistency, soaking into and flavoring the rice. It's aromatic, full of umami and saltiness, blending perfectly with the rice. It's a flavorbomb and quite delicious. (4/5) I rarely comment on service, but I feel like Taurus Ox has actively poor service, not to mention that they take noticeable cost cutting measures, giving a poor experience overall. Firstly, they charge high prices for relatively small portions. That's fine if they're going for more mid-to-upscale customers. But then they take shortcuts by having customers pick their own silverware and napkins, similar to a counter service place. The waiters take a completely lackadaisical attitude, sauntering slowly between tables, but mostly standing around not doing anything. For this kind of establishment, and especially due to the fact that the restaurant was only a quarter full or so, I should not need to ask for water refills. I should not have to sit around for fifteen minutes waiting for the check. With how much I enjoyed the burger over at Ox Burger, I can't help but to be disappointed about Taurus Ox. This cute little Seattle restaurant offers Lao fusion food. I came here for dinner with one other person while visiting Seattle. We weren't super hungry but wanted to still check it out. Taurus Ox was offering happy hour while we were there (2-5pm). However we just ordered off the regular menu. We shared the Laos burger, lao sausages, and the Soop Pak salad. The Lao burger was full of flavor and was really nice. It had smashed patties with cheese, tomatoes, pork belly, and pickled onions. It was served by itself. It was an average size. The lao sausages came with a delicious sauce and was very enjoyable. The soop pak salad was okay. Not a favorite but I'm glad we got our greens in. Their menu isn't super extensive but it has items you definitely cannot get anywhere else. I appreciate their creativity and flavors. They also have specality cocktails and drinks as well. The service though being good was extremely slow. It took a long time to put our orders in and for our check. The restaurant is small but cute. It is great for intimate groups or large groups. I finally revisited Taurus Ox in their new location, which is much larger, and definitely beautiful, for lunch on a weekend. The menu is not too different, and I ended up having a thom khen rice bowl which consisted of caramelized braised pork belly with mustard greens and some sweet thinly sliced peppers on top of jasmine rice. The flavors were delicious, and the greens and peppers helped to keep the dish from feeling too rich. The meat was so tender and melted in my mouth. Service was fine, although there were some oddities. We ordered mango sticky rice, but did not find out until after we'd finished our mains that they were apparently out of mango sticky rice. The dining room was also mostly empty when we got there, yet our food still took a noticeable while to come out. Prices are definitely higher than they were the last time I visited, but that's kind of how things are everywhere in Seattle. read more

Came to Taurus Ox on a late summer afternoon and had quite a pleasant experience! Came with one friend and was treated enthusiastically and seated promptly. It was a Thursday afternoon and wasn't super crowded. The dishes we ordered ended up tasting excellent. The Nam Khao had the ideal mix of slightly spicy and tangy flavors with the perfect amount of crunch, and the lettuce provided to put it into wraps was fresh and nicely crisp. All the meats on the meat platter were perfectly savory and delicious. I will say the texture on the sticky rice was not quite soft and sticky enough in my opinion, but that was a relatively minor issue in the big picture. Also when we went it was happy hour and the $7 cocktails are excellently priced! The vibe inside the restaurant is vibrant and cozy, and also reasonably casual. I've been wanting to try Taurus Ox for a while and I am so glad that I finally was able to come! My frisbee team came after a game, we called ahead and they happened to have space for 10 people. I shared the Side Lao Sausage & Chicken Wings, they were both great. I enjoyed the dipping sauce for the sausage and the sauce for the wings. Would recommend those. I tried the Lao Burger and thought it was okay; glorified smash burger. The Khao Piek Sen was a stand-out dish to me. Taurus Ox was a mixed bag for me. I got three dishes: papaya salad, thom khem (pork belly), and their signature Lao Burger. Of these, I can confidently say that the Lao Burger is enjoyable, unique, and worth trying. However, the other two dishes were good but not noteworthy. In a lot of ways, it feels like Taurus Ox is playing it safe in an effort to keep appeal broad. Add to this a menu that is overpriced across the board (my order neared $80) and poor service performed by various gruff waitstaff. Overall, I don't see much of a reason to come to Taurus Ox since the Lao Burger is available at their Ox Burger locations throughout the city, and the rest of the menu here can be easily outdone by many other restaurants. read more

Came here on a busy weeknight, will say service was extremely slow for most parties that were here. It took a long time to place an order, for the food to come out, and for our check to come. For food, I was also a bit underwhelmed. We ordered the pork belly dish, this was super salty and lacked a depth of flavor. The pork belly meat was very tender, but I preferred the eggs in this dish. The rice that came with it was the highlight of the meal, the crispy vegetable pancake on top is super interesting. The lao burger was a little underwhelming, didn't taste too special I suspect the sauce was overpowering the more Lao flavors in the meat. Worth a try if you're in the area for a while/live here. Went to Taurus Ox last night for Happy Hour! Incredible wings, perfectly crispy. Also ordered the Ox burger (a classic) and the chicken soup with rice noodles. The food here is to die for! What hinders the experience not only this visit but previous times is the service.. yesterday our server had a literal sweatsuit on with sandals and socks (unsanitary?). We sat for ten minutes without being helped and then once we ordered we were never asked how anything was, if we wanted another drink, nothing. It's tough because the food is so good but the service misses the mark consistently, especially when you are asked for minimum 18% tip at the end. read more

I went here for the first time with my friend on Valentine's and we were able to get a reservation during their lunch hours surprisingly considering the busy holiday. Ambiance and decor was beautiful! And appreciated being seated next to the window to have more natural lighting peak through. As for the food, I was excited to try one of their popular dishes, the Lao burger....oh my goodness....honestly the best burger I've ever had to be honest. The sauce is fantastic and the textures and flavors were just so southeast Asian core I LOVED IT. It's such a unique burger and it's the reason why I will be coming back to try more of their food. For my drink I also ordered a Pandan Cream Soda which was BOMB btw and basically a pandan Italian soda (that I'm inspired to make at home). My friend and I also shared the Lao beef jerky and the jerky itself was TASTY with the jaew tomato sauce. I will say that the sticky rice for the Lao beef jerky was an unexpected texture for sticky rice (reminded me of left over rice that you would use to cook fried rice). This place makes me want to eat Laotian food once a week. I had the crispy rice with lettuce wraps (Nam khao) which is outstanding. The texture works perfectly with the lettuce. And I also had the pork belly (thom kem) which had the perfect amount of spice. Perfection! And when my mind couldn't possibly be blown any more, I had the Ube sticky bun for dessert that made me cry uncle!!!! read more

Came here on a Saturday night and it was a great date spot--busy, lively, and full of good energy. I sat at the bar, which wasn't bad at all. The service was friendly, and the menu looked amazing, so it was hard to choose what to get. I ended up ordering the Lao's Burger and it was super delicious, maybe just a little on the salty side, but still really good overall. While I am not a regular patron of burgers, I ordered a burger for lunch at Taurus. As my friend suggested, it was one of the best I have had. Its a generous size, but not massive. It was quite delicious...yum. Only downside was that they do not have fries to supplement. That would have added the next level of enjoymentin making it a complete package. ;) read more

This was my second visit, and I'm glad it was another memorable experience! Taurus Ox is an elevated, Lao restaurant located on the outskirts of Capitol Hill. Be mindful that you need to find street parking if you plan on driving here. Service was excellent as our servers were kind, professional, and periodically checked on us to ensure our needs were met. I came here for the Lao Burger. This is easily their spotlight choice because I've been here twice and the quality of the burger is still up there. The burger had such a complex taste as it blended mayonnaise and jeow bong. This is the best burger I've ever had. I've also had the Papaya Salad, Chicken Noodle Soup (forgot the exact name), Nam Khao, and Mango Sticky Rice. All equally great! Oh right, I also recommend the Tamarita cocktail if you want a good drink (basically a margarita but with tamarind flavoring) My reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 came to the prices and portion. Between the time when I was there 2 years ago vs. a week ago, the prices went up quite a bit, averaging $2-4 more on some dishes. I'd also argue that the portion of the food that we paid for is not reasonable. I would not recommend coming here on an empty stomach, your bill WILL add up. Taurus Ox reminds me of the "millennial burger place" meme on TikTok, though the big difference is that the food is actually good. My Lao girlfriend has praised this establishment for making her cuisine an authentic experience. Pricing and portion disputes aside, I'm very fortunate to have tried Taurus Ox twice. Absolutely delicious Laotian food! Highly recommend coming for Happy Hour for discount drinks, wings, and meat plate. I came with 2 friends at around 5pm. We sat outside and everything was lovely - from service to food! I got an NA cocktail and it was spicy. The meat plate is SOOO GOOD. I loved the sausage and jerky. Both had incredible flavor. We also got the pork belly main. The meat was so tender and loved the Brussel sprouts patty. Overall a very delicious dinner spot! read more

They definitely live up to their mission statement of "bold, umami, spicy, herbaceous, and aromatic flavor of Laos," (although I am not from Laos so I can't confirm the authenticity haha). Ambience is versatile: great for date night and for families looking for a nice meal out. Seating didn't take too long, you can also ask for bar seating. Only down side is the price, which of course in the heart of Seattle you can't escape. I understand they have high rent to pay. I can't justify spending $18 on a burger, but if you can, go for it because the portion is bigger than normal and the flavors are amazing (it's got fat, salt, and plenty of umami, and acidity to balance it all out, plus the freshness of the cilantro). read more

Real good meal, the reviews are accurate. We started with spring rolls and Lao Sausage. The spring rolls had good flavor, just a little too much oil. The sausage was very good, I asked for some chili oil for a kick, real good. I had the Nam Khao for the main course. That was yummy. The crispy rice, ham, coconut, sausage created a great flavor profile. The service was great, my daughter ordered the burger without mayo and they forgot. The sliced it up as an appetizer for the table to share while they had a second one ready quickly (nice job). I'm glad I had a chance to try the burger.
