Food: New England Clam Chowder in sourdough bread bowl (8/10) - very filling and shareable! i love the taste of sourdough bread and it wasn't a hard bread or anything either. it was decently fresh. the order came out HOT but pretty quick as well. i like how the soup isn't just mostly broth either. there's a decent amount of bits inside such as clam and veggies. Service: Pretty straightforward, quick, and helpful at the front register. They bring out the food at a decent pace as well despite the long lines Ambiance: Super busy and every table and seat is taken. The line will wrap around but moves at a decent pace. Very busy atmosphere! The store itself is small and very limited seating.

    Seafood bisque!!! Totally recommend!

We stopped at Pike Place Chowder during a Seattle layover after hearing so many people recommend it. The line was long, but it moved quickly and was definitely worth the wait. The New England Clam Chowder was thick, creamy, and packed with clams. My favorite was the Seafood Bisque, which had a rich tomato cream base loaded with seafood flavor. We also shared the Dungeness Crab Roll, which was warm, buttery, and generously filled with crab. Foodie confession: I was so hungry after waiting in line that I forgot to take pictures before digging in. Great food, efficient staff, and worth a stop if you're visiting Pike Place Market. Just don't arrive starving--the line can look intimidating!

WuzupWuzup!! Busy, overcrowded, and overwhelming, but worth it. Place was on my to do list visiting Seattle. The sampler was the best way to go on trying different Chowder, I will say for sure that the vegan one surprised me the most and was tasty in flavor. It reminded me of an green curry, bet it would pair well with some rice. Prices are good, seating can be tricky at times but seats opening fairly quickly. I'd definitely recommend this place out for anyone looking to experience some chowder.

The hubby at our little table happy as a literal clam. Line behind him.

My husband's coworker let us in on the HYPE surrounding Pike Place Chowder and I'm so glad he did! While my hubby was telling me bits and pieces of why we should listen to his pals advice, I have to admit I was wondering "how great can chowder be?" And "won't every spot here have chowder on the menu?" Welll....what we experienced (and our tastebuds verified) here, was NEXT LEVEL! Award winning, piping hot, loaded with seafood, creamy goodness. The menu is decently simple, yet very hard to choose from all the yummy options. We went classic with their most famous chowder, the New England chowder and the Connecticut style lobster roll. We also purchased a strawberry lemonade and had our chowder in a bread bowl. My last minute add-on was a small scallop chowder. I was very tempted to do the chowder sampler, but I'm happy we didn't because our meal was very filling!! Once the chowder hit the table, it was gone pretty quickly the clam chowder had delicious notes of Smokey bacon, many bits of clam, and the creaminess of potato. The way it soaked into the bread bowl was heavenly. You MUST do it. I was more of a fan personally of the scallop chowder, up to the brim with chopped scallop meat and plenty of dill. It was a refreshing, but still decadent chowder option. The lobster roll was absolutely delicious. The butter was melting off into our hands!! I ordered the roll with 1/4 oz of lobster, but they also had one with 1/2 oz of meat! Wow, I'm hungry again just writing this. The Housemade strawberry lemonade was a perfect match. If you have any doubt about where you'd like to eat while in Seattle, this is your spot. The line was truly not that bad and in our experience, a lot of lines are totally worth it for delicious famous food foods and this was no exception. While the restaurant itself is small, people tend to eat quickly and come and go so we were able to snag a table, plenty of people also sit at the bar. The kitchen went so smoothly and you pick up your food. The second you order it! Fresh and convenient! They also ship and offer travel options for their famous concoctions!

You simply can't visit Seattle and skip Pike Place Chowder. The clam chowder lives up to the hype: rich, creamy, loaded with clams, and absolutely delicious. There's usually a line, but it's one of those places that's actually worth the wait. I also tried the lobster roll. It was good and packed with lobster, but honestly, it wasn't the best lobster roll I've had. The chowder is the real star here and the reason I'd keep coming back. If it's your first time in Seattle, this place should be on your must-visit list.

Was wondering what the hype is. There's a line around the corner leading into the restaurant. I joined the line until one of the workers told us we can order online if we do not need a table and then you'll be pinged about 5mins later to go into the restaurant to pick up the order. Terrific. We did just that. There was a little wait for the to go order. We did the 4 top chowders so we can enjoy the variety. The restaurant was busy but it's memorial weekend Saturday so lots of ppl in the area. We found a spot to opened it all up. It came with some slices of sourdough bread, crackers. Great flavors. The original chowder is always the best. But we enjoy the other 3 flavors as well. So glad we got the variety

OK, love love love the Chowda at Pike Place Chowder. It's a savory bowl when your in the dead of a Seattle cold spell which is most of the year yet a bowl can supercharge your body instantly.. Frank don't mess around with the gourmet options I just get the straight OG style from New England, the white clam chowder. I'll splash with salt & pepper and add some oyster crackers and I'm ready to consume.... Now I stay away during tourist season due to long lines. But on a normal winter day I may experience a few person wait. The helpers get you ordered super fast and you're eating within 5 mins. Cause it's in the market you have a lot of space to find seating but can also experience a higher decibel levels than most dining places. But hello thats what gives Pike Place Chowder character...

    Hannah M.

Honestly I was underwhelmed, but my standards (being from New England) may be too high. The menu is chock full of different chowders which you can get in a few sizes, or (as I did) you can opt for a 4- or 8- chowder sampler, each 6 oz. I got the 4 chowders for about $22 which I thought was appropriately priced given that a small is $10. In hindsight, it was way too much food - I overestimated the amount of chowder I would be able to eat. I can't even remember the exact four that I chose but they all honestly tasted pretty similar. I was hoping for more smokiness with the chorizo. The seafood bisque was fine but nothing to write home about. The basic clam chowder was good, but I don't know if it really made an impression as one of the best I've had. On the plus side, the employees were all really nice, and they were generous with bread and oyster crackers. No fuss about giving a cup for water either. Would I return? Probably not - it was fun to say I tried it and it was a good late lunch, but I don't know if the chowder is really as good as it's cracked up to be.

Coming from the Bay, we also have pretty good chowder. This was a must go during our annual sibling trip. Pike Place Chowder had some interesting flavors such as lime & coconut, Manhattan, etc. The sampler was a nice way to try everything and it was just perfect for my siblings to share. We opted out on the seafood rolls, but will try next time. Super busy, long line, but not bad at all, the line moved quickly. Staff were friendly and bussed tables quickly to allow seating. Located in the alley, but you couldn't miss it!

    Nehal A.

This is a very popular spot serving delicious chowders and lobster sandwiches. When we arrived, the line was pretty long but it was moving quickly. We waited about 10 minutes to get to the ordering station. There were some counter seats available inside the store. The sitting area in front of the store entrance had limited seats and the staff didn't let anyone take any table until they had their food in their hand. There was also a shaded porch, across the store. At the counter, we ordered the clam chowder, seafood chowder, and 2 lobster rolls. The items were pricey, as 4 of them costed over $100. But they prepare the items super quick, we got our food by the time we were done paying. The chowders and lobster rolls were really good. The sandwiches were overflowing with lobster meat. Overall this was a fantastic place for their delicious food but not so organized for overall dining experience.

    Wei H.

Small space and long line. If you cannot handle it, don't bother. You cannot get a table unless you have the food in your hand. On the other note, it does move fast because everything is made and ready to go. The clam chowder is not bad. Creamy and flavorful. But nothing that so special or wow me. Lobster roll is great. Full of lobster meat. Butter dripping over it made it even better. Bread was toasted. Good place for quick food. In and out. Everything self service. They will somewhat help you get a table but not always guarantee.

    Mr S.

Smooth. High quality! Long line that extended down the alleyway but it moved quickly - maybe 20 minutes. Clam Chowder in a bread bowl is one of my favorites and this was the best that I've ever had. The quality was impressive - smooth texture, perfect temperature for eating, delicious clams, and freshly baked bread that was soft and easy to spoon with every bite. Seating was tight but we were lucky to get a table

Got the 4 cup chowder sampler to share with a friend. It was the perfect amount of food for us for a light lunch! ($22ish) The line can get long but moves fast, there's not a whole lot of seating but you can get it to go and then go sit on the benches across the street if it's a nice day. It's order at a counter style but good for a quick little lunch

Pike Place Chowder Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Pike Place Chowder

Is the fish fresh or frozen?

    Fresh!

Are they still requiring proof of vaccination?

    Nope! And no masks either!

Is the clam chowder fishy, as in a strong seafood taste and smell? Are the bits of clam large or small?

The clam chowder is amazing- creamy and thick with huge chunks of clams in every bite. Can't really smell the fishiness. Only smell the cream and potato, maybe a hint of seafood.

Is there gluten free clam chowder?

Yes! They have a couple of gluten free/ vegan chowders on the menu. Right now, they have Manhattan chowder (GF) plus Lime and coconut chowder (GF, Vegan).

Can you get the lobster roll without mayonnaise?

    Yes

Is there any dairy in the Manhattan chowder?

    Yes

Got back to the bay and missing this chowder already. Anyway to get it frozen and flown over?

Yes they ship for $35. Check out their website pikeplacechowder.com/order

I assume the lines are always long on a Sunday. Is Monday a better choice for a shorter wait time? Thanks!

Yes, it's not as busy on the weekdays but the line generally isn't the issue because it moves pretty quickly. It's finding a table to sit at because seats are limited and it's first come, first served seating.

Does the clam chowder have bacon in it? Can't have bacon.

They have several chowder options. I believe some (at least one) do and others don't. Workers are friendly and can help you with bacon free options.

    Adult & childrens menu?

I only saw one menu. You can get cup/small, bowl/ medium or larger. What we did is ordered two bowls and then ordered other stuff at another restaurant and shared the various items that we each picked near the waterfront.

    Gluten free options?

Manhattan and Lime & Coconut chowder are gluten free.

If I come in at 4:50 or 4:55 on a weekday (right before closing), will I still be served? Will I need to get my food to go?

Generally no. They tend to only make enough for that day and run out of most favors before the day ends.

How often do they change their Market Chowder selection?

The change the market chowder every couple of months.

We're taking our dad to his very first visit to SEA and will definitely visit this delicious and popular establishment for my dad to try. My question is..he's disabled so will there be a wheelchair-accessible seating?

Forget hitting the Pike Place market location, and instead go to the second location, which is on the top floor of the air-conditioned shopping mall called Pacific Center, complete with accessible seating, elevators and no line-up.

    Where do you park?

    Market Place Public Parking

What is the best time to visit so there's not such a long wait?

Hi Damaris! The line tends to be shorter right before we open or close, but if you're local, you have an even better option to skip the line. We just introduced our Grab & Go take-out program that allows you to order online and pick up anytime… Read more

    Is there indoor seating?

Yes, but there is more seating outside. You can also take your food & go to a public seating area in the market by making a right at a sign which reads "Sea View Cafe."

Lorenzo opened Paseo in 1994, where his popular Cuban roast pork sandwiches were regarded as among the best in the country. After years of local expansion, Paseo abruptly filed for bankruptcy in 2014. The brand was subsequently bought out by a local entrepreneur, but the sale did not include Paseo's secret recipes (the reboot attempted to reverse engineer the sandwiches with varying success). So, in 2015, Lorenzo's sons revived Paseo under a new name, Un Bien, armed with their father's original recipes. Nowadays, Un Bien is generally regarded as superior to Paseo, and you can grab their Caribbean sandos at one of the three locations across Seattle. You can't miss the pastel pink-and-teal palette of the original shack on an otherwise drab block of Ballard. As you approach the wooden window, you are greeted by the aroma of sauteed meats and veggies. Communal laquered wood benches are lined up underneath a covered pergola. Fifties hits ring respectfully around the kitchen. My partner and I visited for late weekday lunch, and we ordered immediately. We opted to focus on the signature pork shoulder, so we split the #1 Caribbean Roast and #2 The Press. Across both sandwiches, we were impressed by the tender pork, rich onions, lemon-forward aioli, and marinade-soaked baguette. The standard roast pork sandwich added on pickled jalapenos and crisp romaine, culminating in a dynamic flavor that accentuated the meat. Meanwhile, The Press featured tart banana peppers, smoked ham, and melty Swiss, amping up the sweet and savory flavors alike; we agreed that this extra-messy sandwich just edged out the standard version. Our order took just minutes to be prepared, and the bill just topped $30. Despite the fanfare, I still found myself surprised by just how satisfying Un Bien's sandwiches turned out to be. Across all the food I ate in Seattle, only these pork sandwiches would be worth a return visit, even if I had to venture out of my way.

We ordered promptly, but were told we would only have about 10 minutes to use the seating area before it closed. When we asked for clarification because the restaurant was advertised as being open until 9:00 PM, staff confirmed they were open until then but said the seating area would close earlier anyway. After receiving our food, we were told not to sit down and were asked to leave the seating area altogether. The interaction felt abrupt and discourteous, especially given that we had arrived well before closing and had purchased food with the expectation that we could eat on-site. The food itself was average, but the poor customer service and inconsistent messaging about seating left a much stronger impression than the meal. There are other better places. Skip.

I was a bit confused on where to order until I realized there were kiosks by the front counter. It would've been nice if one of the workers actually had said something to me. Anyway, onto the food. I got the Fast Eddie with fries and it was alright. The meat was bit dry. Yes there was the au jus to dip in and it helped quite a bit, but all the flavors just didn't mesh. It was basically an ordinary french dip. The fries were okay, but the jalapeno aioli was great! That made everything better, but not enough to save the sandwich. For $25, I picked up the cheesesteak and fries combo. Not a terrible price for the portion. Waited about 10-15 minutes for the sandwich to come out. You order on a tablet here, and then they call your name. It's a small storefront, so you really have to stay nearby to hear your name being called in the large space that is the Armory. Not much interaction with staff. Plenty of seating throughout the Armory, though shared with other restaurants. The food came out piping hot. Obviously, they cook everything fresh to order because the inside of the fries was like lava. The fries were thick-cut and seasoned to perfection. The sandwich was good. I thought some pieces of the steak were a bit tough, and the roll seemed a bit over-steamed or possibly stale. A good sandwich and decent portion, nonetheless. I'm still going 5 stars here. I think Big Mike's is a great choice if you want a hearty, meat-filled sandwich and you happen to be in the area. However, I think you could be happy with another dining option in the Armory, too. My kids loved the MOD Pizza nearby. While there isn't anything wildly unique going on at Big Mike's, they are still pushing out great sandwiches at reasonable prices with a no-frills ordering process.

I ordered the caprese sandwich and my brother got the porchetta sandwich. The bread is crispy but soft on the inside. I saw the guy cutting up the tomato as we sat to wait for our sandwiches. You order at the kiosk and then sit to eat. The ingredients are super fresh and worth waiting for the sandwich.

We ordered the Meatball Sub and Eggplant Sub with marinara sauce. Both sandwiches were flavorful and satisfying. The meatball sub was hearty and comforting, while the eggplant sub had a rich marinara sauce that worked well with the sandwich. We were especially disappointed that the Cubano was sold out, as it was one of the main reasons we stopped by. The only drawback was the price--at around $20 per sandwich, it felt a bit expensive for what you get, especially considering it was just a 6-inch sub, even though the quality was good. We visited during a FIFA World Cup match, so the line was quite long, but it moved steadily and efficiently. No complaints there. The atmosphere is casual and straightforward, with indoor seating only. Its downtown location near the stadiums makes it a convenient spot for a quick meal before or after an event. Overall, a good sandwich shop with quality food, though the pricing keeps it from being a must-visit. I'd still come back to finally try that Cubano.

Bonus: this spot is kosher! Potato Latkes (5/5): These latkes are thick boys and fried up so they're piping hot when they hit the table. Because of their size, you really get the contrast of the hard crunch on the outside with super fluffy potato inside. So good we immediately turned around and ordered more. Chocolate Babka (2/5): This was truly the only miss I've had here. Unfortunately, the babka just really dries out after it's been sliced, which is a shame because it's just gorgeous with generous swirls of chocolate inside. Reuben (5/5): I really thought their pastrami couldn't be beat, but the brisket is dare I say better? Just as tender and feels a bit less fatty, so it's a little more crushable. Tip: go for the seeded rye over the marbled rye; something about the marbled rye just falls apart a bit more with the juices of the meat, though it's still delicious! Black & White Cookies (4/5): I expected this to be cloyingly sweet, but this was actually scrumptious with some fresh lemon flavor in the cookie itself. Absolutely massive as well.

Do you happen to live in Washington and miss said pastrami sando? My friend, I have good news for you. Dingfelder's pastrami is a dead ringer for that sandwich: huge slices of melt-in-your-mouth pastrami, regular and half sour pickles, and all the other accoutrements you'd expect from a legit Jewish deli. This place doesn't screw around. If you want a great, hearty, flavor-packed sandwich, this is one of the best places to throw your money. But, as others have pointed out, it's no cheap date: expect to pay over $20 for one of those mighty pastrami sandwiches. This isn't Subway so you're not saving money by eating here, but after one bite of their pastrami you'll understand why you're paying so much. Quality isn't cheap. I'd say this place is tied with Tat's Deli for the best sandwiches in Seattle.
