Malaysian cuisine is one of my favorites, after living in SEA many years in the past it's something I crave for. I was excited and of course expecting real good Malaysian food at Kendai Makan. I had the Nasi Lemak and my husband had the Nasi Goreng. They definitely tasted Malaysian food but not as quite the traditional taste and texture. The coconut rice in the Nasi Lemak hit the spot, the tea eggs were a good idea but usually it's a fried egg and the chicken curry was so so .... it's usually fried chicken. Dishes were big enough to share. The restaurant was nice and spacious. Service was alright. If looking for a hearty SEA meal this is the place.
Having been to their original location in Capitol Hill many years ago, it was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon the sister company as we were strolling around in Belltown. Really cute interior with cozy wooden booths reminiscent of street vendors in Southeast Asia. Nasi Lemak comes in generous portion and for the protein you can choose either chicken curry or beef rendang. (5/5) We also tried Rusuk Kedai which is ribs marinated with sweetened soy sauce with a little kick to it. (4/5) Roti jala comes with chicken curry dipping and is large enough for sharing with 3-4 people. (4/5) Teh Tarik is good but a bit too milky and can be stronger. (3/5) Kedai Sling is a version of Singapore Sling, refreshing on a warm summer day. A bit too sweet for my liking and can use a bit more punch. (3.5/5) Food came out quickly, friendly staff, but you may need to flag them down for attention. Overall a really nice place to have an authentic Malaysian meal and would stop by again if I'm in the area.
Walked in here on a winter day and the food was amazing. Got this chicken platter with coconut rice and it was very filling and the ambiance and service was great. They have box shaped tables which makes dining experience private and really good service. Overall amazing

This place has been on my list for a while, but the original location always had such a long line that I never managed to get in. Recently spotted the new Belltown location while I was in the area and finally got my chance. The restaurant was inviting and quite large in space compared to the Og location in caphill. Fair warning: I went pretty close to closing time, so take my service experience with a grain of salt. It was fine -- nothing remarkable, but nothing off-putting either. On to the food, which is really what matters here. I got the nasi lemak and the mushroom pan mee, and both were excellent. Really flavorful with a lot going on texturally. The pan mee noodles on their own are fairly plain, but paired with the mushrooms they came alive -- the mushrooms in particular were a standout, really earthy and satisfying. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area and craving Malaysian food. Glad this location exists so I no longer have an excuse to skip it!
I visited on a Friday around 7:30 PM and expected a long wait, but we were seated fairly quickly. Parking was challenging, though, and I had to park a few blocks away. I ordered the chili pan mee, which was good and met expectations. The service was decent; staff checked in once during the meal to make sure everything was fine. Note that an 18% gratuity is already included, so additional tipping is not necessary. Overall, it was a decent experience. While I would not go out of my way to return, I would not mind coming back if friends suggested it. It is not a place I would choose on my own.
We stayed in Belltown for a couple of days and walked past this place a few times before finally deciding to give it a go. Man... this place absolutely delivered lol. We ordered the Nasi Lemak with beef rendang, Laksa Lemak, and the Sayap Ayam Pedas (chicken wings). The nasi lemak was so good and I really liked all the side dishes it came with. The beef rendang was perfect. Super flavorful and tender. That dish was a straight up banger. The Laksa Lemak was also amazing. That deep rich coconut curry broth was crazy flavorful. Definitely one of those dishes where you keep saying "one more bite" and next thing you know the bowl is gone lol. The chicken wings also did not miss. I'm so used to sauced wings or dry rub wings, but these had this sesame topping that just exploded with flavor when you ate it with the chicken. Super unique and addicting. Also gotta shout out Bo and Nat. My fiancée told them it was my birthday and they hooked it up with some ice cream and sang me a song lol. They even took a picture of me with a happy birthday sign which was awesome and made the experience even more memorable. Overall we had an amazing experience at Kedai Makan. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was top tier. Definitely one of our favorite meals from this Seattle trip and we'll for sure pop back in whenever we visit Seattle again.
We went there at noon on a Tuesday morning, it was practically empty. The server was nice and friendly and the food came out quickly. We walked to the place, so can't comment about parking, there is not much street parking at bell town. The food was delicious! I have never had Malay food before, I got the nasai lemak, it was delicious! I didn't like the small fish with the peanuts, but the peanuts were delicious!
Went for the Malaysian restaurant and tried a variety of dishes. We had the nasi manak with chicken curry. Everything was delicious, chicken, coconut rice and peanuts! Everything was delicious. The service was good and we got our order taken and food arrived pretty fast. The place is pretty and with a lot of seating, there was not a long wait. They do charge a 18% fees for dining.

A little confused about some of the negative reviews. I am not super well versed in Malaysian food by any means but I have had it before and the food here tasted fine. While there was a literal flood in front of the restaurant the night we walked in (literally had to circumnavigate couple crosswalks and streets), the food to me was worth it. I got the curry laksa which was perfectly spiced and ample in serving size. Not too spicy though,until you mix in the balacan.. so you control your spice level. My bf got the nasi lemak and also enjoyed his meal. Food didn't take long to get to us at all. A ding because we asked to sit in one of the booths, and they said no they needed it for any four people party that walks in. They sat another two people table in one of the booths who came in after us.
The food here's good but it's a little too expensive on top of the 18% service fee. The laksa didn't taste as authentic and flavorful as i expect from laksa. The roti was a tasty appetizer, as is nasi lemak with beef rendang! I wouldn't come here expecting the food to taste like authentic malaysian food though. Otherwise, our waiter was attentive and quick. The interior is also spacious and pretty :)
Small menu and non attentive service. Food was ok but nothing to write home about. I ordered the Nasi Lemak with beef and it was pretty simple. Could've used a sauce or something. My party ordered the nasi goreng kampung and again, super simple fried rice with not a lot of depth of flavor. We also ordered the roti Babi as our side and the menu did not mention the use of soybean which was terrible due to my soy allergy. The server didn't seem to care and just said "whoops sorry." For what we ordered and the mandated 18% service charge, it was not worth it.
I haven't had much (maybe not any?) Malaysian food in my life, so I was blown away when I had the chance to try Kedai Makan. If you have any vegan / vegetarian friends and you're looking to impress them, this is the place to take them. I encourage you to be adventurous when looking at this menu, because there may be a few dishes you haven't heard of before. Stray away from only ordering a fried rice dish, and get yourself into a little trouble with a Laksa Lemak; which seems to be Malaysia's version of Khao Soi. The use of nuts and chili oil are what makes all of the dishes here special. The perfect accouterments to bring a dish to life with texture and acidity. They can turn a somewhat boring noodle or rice dish into a stellar journey. The roti here is also an incredibly fun way to get your meal started. This playful approach to the classic bread comes with a ridiculously delicious sweet sauce with chickpeas in it. To me, it tasted more like roti that you would get from a Caribbean restaurant, and I loved that blend of cultures and flavors. At the end of the meal, we were thanked for our patronage by an incredibly sweet and grateful employee named Bo. Bo seemed to genuinely want to learn more about us and how we ended up at her restaurant. It was a really nice touch to feel so welcomed at a restaurant when it was my first time visiting. We came on a Saturday night, and grabbed a primo spot on the outdoor patio! No wait. It was a beautiful high 60s kinda night- great day for a patio spot. We got the Nasi Lemak- sweet, coconutty curry and great combo of components Roti Babur- yummy little meat pocket, with a mound of pickles on the side Food came out pretty quick! I would say it's squarely $$, but do keep in mind that 18% gratuity will be included in your bill. With that in mind, it was kinda weird that the waiter was on the phone when they were with us, while also talking on the phone. read more
Came here on a Monday afternoon around 3pm... no customers around at this time but they were still happy to seat us wherever we wanted! Got the Nasi Biryani with chicken - I never tried this style of biryani, and it was really good! My friend and I split this portion, but if I was properly hungry I would 100% be able to finish my own plate. The service was fast and friendly, and the waitress was super nice. If you decide to dine in, you will automatically get charged 18% for service fee regardless of your party size. Something to keep in mind! Yummy spot - would recommend :^) read more
Was in Belltown for a couple of nights and saw this restaurant full of people - I knew I had to try it and am glad I did. I saw from several Yelp reviews that the Roti Jala was really good, so I ordered that with chickpea curry. The roti was soft and different from anything else I have tasted (in a good way). Shout out to all the Yelpers for the great advice. Since there were 2 of us, we also ordered the Nasi Biryani and Sayap Ayam Pedas Spicy fried chicken wings). I have to say - this was the best meal I had while in Belltown. No wonder many people go there to eat. If I ever get a chance to be in Belltown again, I will surely eat here again. read more
I absolutely love Kedai, I went to the other location first and loved it. Came today for Mother's Day and was surprised that we were the first people there. I love this new location lots more space than the other location. Staff was friendly and we even had a chat about my Labubu. Food was absolutely amazing. Seriously not a single thing was anything other than perfect. Juicy meat seasoned to perfection. read more
This place is pretty good overall! I don't have Malaysian food very often though. But the flavor of everything was pretty solid! I would lean more towards 4 and a half star. Food wise: We got the 3 items in the picture, everything was put well together. Many different flavors in the dish and a decent portion also. It was slightly on the saltier side? But that might just be me. But if you mix the coconut rice and everything together, the flavor is good. Drinks were fantastic in my opinion! I got the gin and tonic with lime leaf and it was sooooooo gas. My friend got the hibiscus drink and that was amazing too. I would go back solely for the drinks. Service: it was quick and the staff were nice. Nothing crazy special. The birthday ice cream is not free by the way, haha I thought it was complimentary. Ambiance: the vibe was very nice, pretty authentic I feel like. It was a cool place, temperature wise. I feel like it would be a nice spot in the summer. read more
The menu is different than the old Kedai Makan in Cap Hill, as I know they changed owners post pandemic. The prices here were quite high, there is little to no parking nearby, and the young woman working there the day I ordered food for pickup seemed aloof, indifferent if there were customers that day or not. I ordered the mushroom chili pan mee, as that is a hard to find me up item. It was good, but highly overpriced. Somewhere on the menu or online I read that locals get a discount but that wasn't an option when ordering online. Oh well. read more

I've had numerous colleagues rave about frequenting Kedai Makan when they lived in Seattle. Curiosity got the best of us, as my best friend and I wanted to experience eating Malaysian food for the first time! The inside is spacious and has beautiful Malaysian decor. There is an outdoor covered patio, plus a wooden booth, table seating, and a bar inside. We were one of the only customers, who were checked on and never felt rushed. The worker was so kind and friendly, we appreciated his hospitality! Being our first time having Malaysian food, we chose to order popular items. I had the Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry while my best friend had the Nasi Lemak with Tofu and Chickpea Curry. I also got an order of Roti Jala with Chickpea Curry. Oh my gosh the roti was so good, it was a new texture for me! It was light and thin like a crepe with netting holes. The curry is divine, savory, and coconut--the chickpeas were firm and plentiful but the roti couldn't support it well. The Nasi Lemak was full of new flavors--savory, rich, salty, sweet, and spicy. Loved the coconut rice and flavorful chicken curry. Everything is uniquely different but balances out. I now completely understand why Kedai Makan is highly sought out! Their Belltown spot is their newer location on 1st Ave. and a short way away from Pike Place. We're both ecstatic we got to try Malaysian food and recommend it to all who live or visit Seattle! read more
They have 2 locations, one in belltown, one in Capitol Hill. Can make reservation online beforehand. Plenty of seatings inside. All the dishes we ordered are delicious. My favorite is the Roti Jala with chicken curry. Must Try!! Portions are pretty generous for the price. Definitely will come back. Service is subpar, pretty much no servers ever stopped by to check the table. They do offer online checkout with a QR code on the table. The online platform charges automatically 18% gratuity with 3 dollars platform fee. read more
My first time trying Malaysian food. I ordered nasi lemak with beef rendang and a side of pickled veggies. Everything was flavorful, delicious and coconut-y. I felt the beef was a bit dry but the sauce was so flavorful. I would've loved it if it was fatty cuts of beef. Pickled veggies a little sweet for my taste. Restaurant is cute and modern. Has an industrial feel. Overall a positive experience. I wish I could've tried more dishes. read more
First time trying Malaysian cuisine recommend by our friends and boy it did not disappoint. It was a family favorite for sure. The Laksa Lemak is a curry mixed with coconut and curry flavors very similar to Indian dishes and the chicken biryani was well seasoned and flavored almost ate whole plate by myself! The flavors were spectacular and just typing this is making my mouth water. The service was fast and it's a cute little place. Don't pass up on it if you're in WA. read more

We recently found out that Kedai Makan had opened new locations and decided to try this location. We walked in on a week night and we're seated immediately unlike our experience at thei original location. We got Roti Jala w/ chickpea curry, Nasi Lemak w/ chicken curry, and Sayap Ayam Pedas. We enjoyed the Roti Jala w/ chickpea curry. Nasi Lemak and Sayap Ayam Pedas were very good. Our only complaint was it took a long time to get Sayap Ayam Pedas after we got Nasi Lemak. My husband had finished his meal before I got mine. read more

I'm not sure which is rarer for me... having an opportunity to eat Malaysian cuisine or venturing into Downtown Seattle. However, I added both to my list of recent events as I finally had a chance to try Kedai Makan. Two of us came for lunch on a Saturday around 12:30P and there were only a couple tables occupied, so we were immediately seated in one of the booths. The table was well stocked with chopsticks, forks, spoons and napkins stored in a wooden organizer. This restaurant encourages family-style dining (which totally speaks to me), so the extra utensils definitely came in handy as we shared three dishes. + ROTI JALA ($11): We started out with this side of their "net bread" served with a chickpea curry. The appearance of the bread is so impressive with its web-like pattern. It was light and airy with a very slight chew, providing a perfect canvas for dipping in the savory coconut curry. The curry was thin, but between the richness of the coconut milk, warm spices and slight sweetness, it was very flavorful. Whole chickpeas sank to the bottom of the bowl, so a spoon was necessary since they were tough to scoop up with the bread. + NASI LEMAK ($19 + $3 for beef): A substantial plate with Beef Rendang, tea egg, roasted peanuts, cucumber and sambal (chili paste) surrounding a mound of coconut rice. The menu stated this is "Malaysia's National Dish", so I couldn't resist. The beef was so tender, flavored with coconut milk and a variety of spices. Enhance it even more by topping it with a dab of the spicy sambal. I loved the tea egg which was perfectly soft boiled and had a creamy jammy center. The roasted peanuts had a slight heat and umami notes from dried anchovies on top. This was a very filling dish that can easily be shared. + SAYAP AYAM PEDAS ($18): Four huge fried chicken wings flavored with soy sauce, fish sauce and spices came topped with crumbled peanuts, scallions and sesame. They were so juicy and steaming hot, like they came right out of the fryer. The menu described the wings as being spicy, but I would personally describe them as having a balance between salty and sweet with a subtle heat. I wish the skin was crispier, but the wings were tasty overall. Make sure to pile on the crumbled toppings with each bite! The staff was pretty friendly and we received our food pretty quickly. I was impressed by the presentation of the dishes which were served on such lovely patterned plates. Just one thing to keep in mind is the automatic 20% service charge for dining in which takes the place of the tip. In fact, tips are not even accepted here. Even if you do takeout, there is a 10% service charge. For the two of us, our total bill came to about $66 ($33 each), which is not terribly high, but more than I expected to spend on lunch. read more

Stopped in for lunch today after seeing this highlighted by Kenji on his IG a while back. It was raining quite heavily and we were one of two tables dining in. My husband and I decided what to order and I went to the bathroom. When I came back, he was finishing ordering and I heard discussions about adding white rice. I didn't think we needed it but I figured why not. The server then asked if we weren't going to add any appetizer as I sat down. I thought she was kind of pushy trying to get us to order more, which was probably the lowest point of the experience. The food was wonderful. The ribs were so tender and literally fell off the bones, and that fried rice with anchovy was so full of flavor. We definitely did not need the extra white rice. We're visiting from out of town so we couldn't even take it home and I felt terrible about the food waste. When the check came, 20% gratuity was already included even though it was just me and my husband and they didn't even refill our carafe of water. Not my favorite. So despite the really tasty food, I'm gonna go with 3 stars. read more

Visiting Seattle, Kedai Makan was at the top of my list of good food with gluten-free options. Spoiler alert: our experience was quite disappointing! I ordered the Laksa Lemak with tofu. There were way too many noodles, which soaked up all of the curry, not leaving much. They included a small bowl of chili with oil, which was dripping and left an oil stain on my favorite, brand new jeans. The other reviews regarding poor service are correct--the staff dropped off the food and then basically ignored us for the entirety of the meal. This was especially inappropriate because they automatically charge a a 20% tip. I was so excited for this place, seeing all of their vegetarian and gluten-free options. In the same vein, the carelessness of the staff made me nervous about their food safety for dietary needs. Sadly, Kedai Makan's performance significantly missed the expectations. read more
If you ever ate at the original Kedai Makan, this will not be a similar experience. The flavors are very different even though the dishes are named the same. The good news you can make reservations and have parties larger than 6, which you couldn't do at the original. Good luck finding street parking, so if you drive try using Spot Hero to locate a spot. We waited for about 10 minutes before we were acknowledged and got seated in a back booth. There are some outside seats too. They have a QR menu as well as printed ones. They no longer have the day makahni with the roti jala, which was my son's favorite. They now have a chickpea curry which tasted more Indian than Malay. The laksa was really thick and had peanut undertones, not at all what laksa is like. It was almost more like a Kai soi with coconut. And the belechan flavoring that is expected in laksa was conspicuously absent. Kid had a soda which gets one free refill but they didn't refill. The Kaya toast was served with a typical runny egg and good tasting Kaya but there was a literal slab of butter in it. It also looked like it was on potato bread which was unexpected. The nasi goreng was decent enough but even 3 stars was not super spicy. Got the prawn add ups on the nasi goreng and the laksa and the prawns were fresh and well cooked. Lychee martini was good but sweet and the passion old fashioned was pretty awful. Do not recommend. The old "healing" old fashioned from the original was one of my faves so I was pretty sad. They add an 18% service charge, no additional tipping allowed. If you never ate at the original, you will find this is better than most other Malaysian restaurants. So excited for Kedai Makan to be in Belltown. I never got the chance to try it in Cap Hill, so I jumped at the chance to go during their soft opening. The new location is pretty nice and obviously busy, I expect it will only get busier after the grand opening! We started out with the Roti Babi, which was... alright. I knew what it was stuffed with but it didn't taste too special, even when dipped in the sauce. I hear that the Roti Jala is better so I'll definitely go for that next time. We ordered the Chili Pan Mee and the Nasi Lemak (with chicken curry). The pan mee is super spicy and salty, I thought it was alright. It tasted good but was also nothing special. However, the Nasi Lemak... that was amazing. The curry was delightful and their rice is soaked in coconut milk so it's also delicious! I loved the tea egg. I'm allergic to peanuts so they took out the peanuts and made sure all other dishes were non-contaminated as well. Finally, we got the Honeycomb Cake which was also really great! I haven't had it before, the texture was so interesting. We did wait a really long time for our dessert, but our waiter actually comped it because of the wait. Great experience and great service, can't wait for them to expand their menu. read more
