Communion was, without a doubt, the best restaurant we visited during our Seattle trip. Located in the Central District, the food beautifully reflects the culture and creativity of the neighborhood. I was so excited to see Lao sausage on the menu, I knew we had to get that. The clams and mussels with Lao sausage were hands down my favorite dish - so savory, unique, and packed with flavor. I know it would be something my mom would have loved to try! The collard greens with neck bone meat were another standout. Every bite was unforgettable. The wait here is no joke, so I highly recommend making a reservation. I think we waited an hour and half to get seats for two, but worth it! We were fortunate enough to be seated after closing, and despite the long wait, the staff remained incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating. Their hospitality made the experience even more special. So shoutout to the staff! The only dish that didn't wow me was the trout - it was a little mild and could've used a squeeze of lemon to brighten the flavors. But honestly, everything else was some of the best food I've had in a long time! And I am a real foodie. If you appreciate cultural fusion, Communion is an absolute must visit in Seattle! read more

We went to Communion for brunch based on recommendations and the positive reviews it was getting. We had a reservation but still had to wait about fifteen minutes or so to get seated. We saw a few open tables but assumed they were also reserved. The space is aesthetic; the service was also okay but at times we felt as if we were ignored. The food was okay. The prices were a bit high for what you get. I would love to try dinner next time but at the moment, I don't see myself coming back any time soon. read more

We chose Communion because of the positive reviews. My family of four went to Communion on Thursday 8/13 at 5pm as this was the latest reservation available on Wednesday 8/12. There were people waiting outside when we got there and only a few tables were seated. They seemed to space out the seatings to give the kitchen time to prepare food for the tables. We had high hopes as we love Southern food. We ordered the Sweet Potatoes Hoe Cakes, Mac N' Cheese, Classic Greens, UNC's Wings, Pork Chops, and the Grilled Berbere Steak. The Hoe Cakes were the best 4/5 but tasted like buttery cornbread, good, but nothing special. The Mac N' Cheese was 3.5/5 and were tasty and very cheesy. The classic greens were tasty but came in a small ramekin 3/5. The UNC's wings were okay, tasty and crunchy, but we've had better wings at dozens of restaurants 3/5. The pork chops were decent but dry 2.5/5. The steak was a bit fatty, gristly and bland 2.5/5. A three rating being average. Service was attentive but nobody bothered asking how the food was or we would have openly told them. For the price, there are much better options elsewhere. Don't waste your time, money or stomach on Communion. read more

Had an awesome dinner at Communion last Sunday. Parking was challenging to say the least. There was an underground parking lot across the street but it belongs to the apartment building apparently so we had to find parking several streets away. Started the meal with Sweet Potato Hoe Cake. This had cornbread like texture but felt softer, smoother, quite moist with a sweet honey butter syrup base. BBQ Shrimp tasted out of this world delicious: very fresh head/tail on shrimp cooking in garlic butter, Metier coconut porter. The good to the last drop sauce had bold flavors although quite salty, just perfect for dipping the focaccia in. Unc's Wing was equally endearing: rubbed in a 13-spice blend, with perfect crispness and plump, juicy flesh beneath the coating. Butter-basted cabbage was a rare treat: basted with butter that accentuates the sweetness of caramelized cabbage. Miso butter sauce a great match. The drink I ordered was less intriguing: Kinfolk (bourbon, Jamaican, rum, Cynar, and pecan liqueur) was bourbon heavy, very balanced nonetheless just not memorable. The chocolate truffle was the only item we did not enjoy: it had hard shell and very dense filling. read more

My family came to Washington over the past weekend and suggested we do a brunch. We were told this place was very popular for Sunday brunches. We made reservations but ended up showing up close to their transition to dinner. Due to the lateness, it became more of an intimate setting for us. Also because of the lateness, many of the high-demand brunch options were either sold out or very limited upon arrival, particularly the Catfish & Grits and Grilled Pork Chop. I did not have the pleasure of trying those meals because I am vegetarian, and I elected the Root Vegetarian Hash with fruit. This meal was a 5 out of 5 for me. The perfectly seasoned squash, acorns, and yams combined to inflict a Killer Instinct - "Ultra Combo" on my palate that almost put me in a food coma. Hahaha! I'm such a nerd. But yes, it was that good! A lot of my family and friends raved about their food. Portion sizes were above average and a bit pricey, but everyone seemed overly pleased with their selections with one caveat. One of my friends said Unc's Wings were average and on the salty side. I forewarn you this is coming from someone who is a wing connoisseur. The customer service was top-tier. Parking at the time that we showed up wasn't too bad. We parked in the surrounding neighborhood and were lucky enough to find a spot right in front of the restaurant. Over-top-tier experience, I share my return. read more

I had been to Communion before and was excited to finally take my husband. The menu had changed up a little since my last time but everything was still really good so no complaints there. It is a small spot (sorta) so you kind of get in where you fit in. We ended up at the bar and honestly it worked out perfectly. Our bartender was friendly, engaging and just made us feel right at home. Another staff member came through at some point and was equally as kind. The service all around was great. Now let me talk about the food because that cabbage had no business being that good. I know that sounds random but it was my favorite thing and I did not see that coming. The mac and cheese was delicious, the fried chicken was really good, and my husband was all about the rice and black eyed peas (surprisingly). I also ordered a non alcoholic drink and even though I cannot remember the name it was really good too. The only minor thing was that one of the items, I think it was the hush puppies or cornbread, came out a little lukewarm. They mentioned it can be hard to keep that particular item hot, and flavor wise it was YUM so it was not a dealbreaker. Everything else comes out fresh as it's cooked so just know timing can vary by dish. It did get crowded toward the end and they politely let us know people were waiting outside. They handled it with so much grace it did not feel uncomfortable at all. I will definitely be back. Already curious about what will be on the menu next time. read more

Everyone who works there is just so nice and welcoming. The food was great. Hoe cakes are delicious, definitely order them without questions. We also got the fried chicken, dumplings, risotto, okra, and bread pudding. Fried chicken was crispy and pipping hot inside, the dumplings had nice spicy kick, risotto and okra were spiced well and complimented each other well. Although all were good, the hoe cakes and fried chicken deserve special mention. We will definitely be back! Beware of parking though, it was tough to find a spot around dinner time. read more

This was hands down my favorite meal of my weekend trip. I found this spot through TikTok, and it came highly recommended. We didn't have a reservation, but after about a 10-minute wait, we were lucky enough to snag two seats at the bar. From the moment we walked in, the vibe felt warm, welcoming, and genuinely hospitable. The seating seems intentionally designed to bring people together, and you could see it in the mix of large groups, couples, and even solo diners. Like the name, it had a "communal" energy that made the space feel alive and intimate. The hostess, bartenders, and our waitress were all phenomenal. They were attentive and easy to talk to. Also, the playlist was good. It really added to the overall experience. We started with the sweet potato hoe cakes, and they were absolutely amazing. I loved the texture. They were soft, pillowy, and balanced. They weren't too sweet, even with the honey butter. I wish I'd ordered more to go because I haven't stopped thinking about them. I'll have to try recreating them at home. For my entree, I ordered the stuffed trout, and this is where things really took off. It's a whole fried trout stuffed with a seafood dressing (shrimp, catfish and oysters), and it immediately caught my eye on the menu. I'm not used to eating whole fish, and I don't think I'd even had trout before, but this dish was mouthwateringly good. The fish was crispy, hot, and perfectly seasoned. The béarnaise sauce really set it off. There were so many layers of flavor and texture, and everything just worked together perfectly. On top of that, the presentation was stunning. I posted it on my Instagram story and immediately had people asking where my food was as from. This meal was very memorable. I have zero notes. The ambiance, food, music, and service were all top-tier. Side note: There is a 5% "communal" surcharge added to every bill. The money is used to support staff benefits, the support staff, and the line cooks. This is separate from the gratuity. This surcharge is clearly explained on the menu, and I really love and appreciate the transparency and that they care about the employees. But yeah. Super good. We love a good meal and we damn near left there skipping. read more

Restaurant & bar located in one of the newer apartment blocks in Central District. Warm and inviting interior, medium sized space. Street parking, and the nearby residential streets are very narrow, being 3 cars wide with cars parked on both sides. Very popular for weekend dinner. It's easier to get the reservation for the bar seats which is what we did. Waited for another 10-15 minutes after we checked in to get seated. Their menu is small on two sides of one sheet. To start, I got the Overcast cocktail. It went down smooth, but immediately felt the warmth of the alcohol afterwards, so there's definitely some booze in there. For food, I got their grill pork chop. It was a thick cut loin chop, over a tasty savory sauce. There's a little bit of a sweet chutney on top. Pork chop was not overcooked, and has some juiciness and bounce left. Overall, taste was good, but the food and drinks are getting towards the pricier side, coming out to about $75 with tip. read more

I came here for my brother-in-law's birthday dinner. From the time we arrived we were greeted outside by one of the owners named Damian and the vibes were high! From the customer service, to the food, to the drinks, and even the music playing...everything was a 10/10. The Unc's wings (my favorite dish) were flavorful and crispy, and my wife really enjoyed her stuffed trout. I'm glad I was able to support this black owned business. Wish I could give more than 5 stars! read more

We had dinner reservations for a Friday night at Communion. First thing: make reservations for sure - this is a popular spot - even with reservations we had to sit at the bar. Parking was hard to find so we ended up parking about 1.5 blocks away and walked. The space is small, inviting and lends to "communing" with your dinner companions. The artwork is amazing, great music in the background and all around great vibes. We started with cocktails and then ordered: Unc's Wings: these were probably some of the best chicken wings I've had in a while! Perfectly fried and moist at the same time. Mussels and Clams, which I do not eat, but my dining partner cleaned the entire plate and raved about them. The Collard Green Caesar was crisp and tasted fresh. Finally, the Mac 'N' Cheese which for me, was the best part, texture was perfection and it was amazing. We topped it off and ordered dessert to go because we were full. We took the Bread Pudding home and it was really, really good. The service here was friendly and you definitely get you what you pay for. I have reservations again with another friend in about a week...I clearly LOVE this place. read more

This place is ok. Service is slow. It has cute interior and decoration, and I love how lively it is in here because it's busy. This was highly recommended by AI as a must place to eat for my visit to Seattle. We all thought the food was ok. It was different the best item was the fried okra. We probably could have gotten another serving. We had to send our chicken wings back because it has blood look on the bone. The server stated it is cooked to temperature. I like my chicken done with no blood. I did like the small intimate setting. It would be nice for a date. read more

Busy busy busy but worth the wait! My partner and I visited a while ago for my birthday and it was absolutely essential to have a reservation on a Friday night. Even with our reservation, there was still a bit of a wait. We got sat right near the kitchen which was engaging because we could see some of the dishes get cooked and made. We ended up ordering the special salmon for that night and it seems that there are rotating main dishes. We also got a side of collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried chicken which were all so good! Our salmon dish was cooked perfectly and had a super flavorful sauce that had crayfish in it as well! That was my absolute favorite part and I am excited to have it again some day. The space was really cool and has a good vibe for either a nice dinner out or a fun night out too! It is a bit pricey for me but it is totally worth it for a special occasion dinner. I will be back! read more

First time at Communion and whew... I get it now. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance pulls you right in -- comforting, intentional, and inviting. The music? On point. A hip-hop & rnB playlist that sets the vibe without overpowering the experience. The staff is friendly and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu, which always makes a difference. Let's talk cocktails because the menu is creative in the best way. Names like "Hey Auntie" and "Purple-ish Drank" tell you exactly what kind of experience you're in for. I loved how efficient the bar is -- drinks are batch-made ahead of time, and one personalized bottle gets you roughly two cocktails, which is such a win. The hoe cakes deserve their own moment. Imagine sweet potato cornbread... but better. Buttery, warm, soft, with a lightly crisp exterior -- and the second you bite into it, it just melts in your mouth. Shoutout to Zaachila, our server -- absolutely amazing. Friendly, attentive, and just had a dope, welcoming energy that made the whole experience even better. Now... the wings. Listen. These were something else. Crispy, juicy, seasoned all the way to the bone -- truly tasted like home cooking done right. The mushroom tibs with injera were super creative and surprisingly tasty. There was an initial spice kick, but after a few bites my taste buds adjusted and everything balanced nicely. The black-eyed pea hummus was smooth, creamy, and full of flavor, pairing perfectly with the injera. Lastly, the greens with smoked neck bone were good -- rich and comforting. I personally like my greens a bit more zesty, but the pickled onions added a tanginess that I really appreciated. They were slightly overcooked for my preference, but still very enjoyable overall. All in all, Communion delivered on food, vibe, and service. A thoughtful, soulful dining experience that feels intentional from start to finish. I'll definitely be back. read more

I have been here many, many times and I keep coming back because it is so good and such a treat! This time it was with my 6th grade besties and some I closing me who graduated from Garfield HS which the owner/son went to, as well as many servers. It was yet again delicious! Went to try their new Sunday Brjnch menu. Wow - wow - wow!!! It was sooooooooooo gooooood! You have to GOO! Pretty much ordered everything. The drinks were delicious I closing the fog, Bloody Mary, and more. The catfish and grits, pork chop, chicken wings which I get all the time everything was so phenomenal. And dessert was to die for. It took a bit to get seated but they are busy. We sat in the outside patio which had heaters and it was so cozy and nice which was so surprising. It was so perfect. The owner Damon came out and was so awesome and made us feel at home. Even players that put us all in the right mood! Yaaaaas! Great memories! This place is a must!!!! You have to!!! Try it!!!! Visited Communion on a very busy Saturday night. We did have a reservation so we were able to be seated fairly quickly, but I definitely recommend reserving in advance on the weekend! Inside, the restaurant was very warm and cozy on a rainy night, and the food itself was just as cozy. The greens and mac and cheese were delicious and very hearty portions for sides. The fried chicken wings were perfectly crispy and seasoned. Since the menu changes from time to time, we weren't expecting to see the salmon and crawfish czarina, but it was definitely a favorite. I contemplated leaving a review, but days later, the experience still bothers me. I dined in a couple of weeks ago and had such a pleasant experience. The food and customer service were excellent, and I especially loved the chicken wings. I enjoyed them so much that I went back specifically for them. Unfortunately, my second experience was completely different. The host and waiter were not very pleasant. I asked if my wings could be made well done and was told that they do not make those types of modifications because everything is cooked to a specific temperature. The response was given with an attitude, but I decided to let it go and wait for my food. I did not check my order before leaving the restaurant, which I should have. However, I had no reason to be concerned because I had seen other orders of wings coming out looking perfectly cooked and golden brown. Unfortunately, my wings were greasy, the batter barely stuck to the chicken, and they looked nothing like the wings I had during my first visit or the wings I saw being served to other customers. The quality was noticeably different, and the food was extremely disappointing. What makes this experience even more frustrating is that I genuinely enjoyed my first visit and went back specifically because of how much I loved the wings. I understand that every experience may not be perfect, but the difference in both the food and customer service was significant enough that I felt it was worth sharing. I have no desire to return to this establishment. read more

I had such a wonderful experience at COMMUNION! We came in with a large party, and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. As a thoughtful gesture, they even brought out complimentary appetizers, which was such a nice surprise and really set the tone for the evening. One of the highlights was learning about the rich history of the building, it's a national landmark, and it adds a special depth to the whole dining experience. Our hostess was incredibly attentive and patient, making sure everything ran smoothly for our group. The food itself was fantastic. We ordered a variety of dishes and shared everything family-style, which turned out to be the perfect way to experience the menu. I highly recommend doing it this way if you want to try a little bit of everything. A helpful note for future diners: the table orders all at once and receives a single bill at the end. It actually makes things much easier and keeps the flow of service smooth. read more

I was in Seattle for a work conference and our group rented out Communion for a private dinner. I had heard about their "Seattle Soul" concept, but experiencing it in person made it clear why this place has the reputation it does. Led by Chef Kristi Brown and co-owner Damon Bomar, the menu blends Southern comfort food with international and Asian influences in a way that feels thoughtful, not forced. Instead of ordering individually, our hosts curated a communal spread for the table, which felt perfectly aligned with the restaurant's mission of fostering closeness and belonging The table was covered with fried chicken wingettes, fried catfish skewers, okra, brussel sprouts, carrots, broccoli, collard greens, deviled eggs with oysters, macaroni & cheese, shrimp toast, and hoecakes. It was a feast. Everything was delicious, but the okra absolutely stole the show for me. I'm usually not an okra person because I don't love slimy textures. This was the opposite. Crisp, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked. I kept going back for more. The mac & cheese was rich and comforting, the catfish skewers were well-balanced, and the deviled eggs with oysters were a fun, elevated touch. The staff handled our large group with ease. Service felt organized without being stiff. The bartenders were cool, efficient, and kept the drinks flowing without long waits The space itself is on the smaller side, which makes it ideal for intimate dinners or private events. The bar is stunning, and the decor is beautiful. Black art and culture are thoughtfully highlighted throughout the restaurant, and you can feel the intention behind the space. If you're looking for food with flavor, heart, and purpose, Communion delivers. read more

The food is so so delicious!! The okra was the BEST okra I've ever had in my life. First off, COMMUNION R&B is a vibe. Well situated with indoor and outdoor seating and a short ride away from the downtown area. There is a lot of residential around meaning parking can be scarce. Came with a reservation and was seating promptly. There were a few groups waiting and all wete seated in no time. Based on the dishes ordered, here were the individual ratings: Fried Chicken: 4.5/5 (wish it was just a little crispier) Mac & cheese: 4/5 Collard Greens with neck bones: 4/5 Deviled Eggs: 4.5/5 Dumplings: 3.5/5 Brown Liquor (old fashioned): 5/5 (love the portion!) Overall, highly recommended. I dropped just one star because it felt like it took a while to get service once we were seated but service was good otherwise. Will be back! read more

I recently got the chance to try this place out, and I'm so glad I did. I arrived on time for my reservation, but the other person in my party was a few minutes out, so they didn't seat me and actually had me wait outside. For me, this is where they lost points as it was cold and rainy and the restaurant wasn't remotely full. I get that this is their policy, albeit annoying. When my friend arrived and we were invited back inside and seated, our server was quick and kind. She made some great recommendations and was very personable. My friend and I shared the dumplings which were flavorful and tasty, and I ordered the Laotian sausage eggs Benedict while my friend ordered the pork chop with a side of mac and cheese and grits. We both loved our entrees and felt the flavor profiles were unique. The Mac and cheese seemed to be missing something, but everything else was tasty. Definitely will come back! read more

We took our daughter and her partner to dinner for her birthday at Communion. We decided to try a few different dishes and share with each other. The food was good, but nothing to get excited about. Everything in our opinion was overpriced. Pork chops are usually lean, these were very fatty. They were supposed to be served with Hoppin John. Instead it came with black eyed peas, straight from the can, and rice. The collard greens were very good, but very spicy. The chicken and lentals were good, but the chicken was a little undercooked for my taste. We had Coconut cream cake for dessert which was delicious, but $14 a slice is excessive. I guess we just aren't used to eating at the latest "in" places because with tip, it cost us $275 for 4 of us. Way too rich for our taste. read more

In opera they used to say the further you get from Vienna the worse the music becomes. For me, the further you get from the south the worse soul food gets. But when I say that, I'm never talking about Communion. Communion is it. I was blown away by this place. I loved to see all of the cushions on the menu. And the aroma that comes from the kitchen is divine, and it greets you before the hostess does. We had to wait a little bit longer for our reservation to become ready because of how busy they were. And the hostess was happy to get us set up with drinks while we waited. Also, you really should secure a reservation. By the time I finished my first drink, we were being seated by our waitress, Kristina. Flawless service by the way. No issues just praise. She gave food and drink suggestions and the drinks just magically kept refilling themselves like I was at Hogwarts or something. Let's get into the plate plates. I was hungry. Sure. And this was still a case of eating with my eyes and not my stomach. I ordered the deviled eggs and the special which had blackened salmon, and a crawfish étouffée. It was more food than I was expecting so I did get a box. So basically if you're thinking about going, do. It's really amazing.
