My group of 4 did get seated very fast since we came at almost exactly 5pm before anyone else showed up. This review is after the establishment removed their khao man gai from the menu and instead became a khao soi-exclusive place, save for some appetizers and drinks. Their menu is now on a QR code and you have to order through there for your food to come to you. For the food: - I got the braised beef khao soi curry broth. It's savory, creamy, awesome and has a better spicy kick with some chili oil. The fried shallots add an extra crunch throughout the dish, and egg noodles are al dente and easy to chew. I ate this one really fast but was overall extremely satisfied. - One of my friends got their seared duck kaho soi. He said the broth overtakes the duck meat taste; otherwise the amount of spice was superb and he didn't need to add chili oil. - For one of my friends who is vegan, she was pleasantly surprised; her tofu kao soi broth was actually very flavorful when normally most broths in other vegetarian soups are bland. She didn't need any other condiments; the whole dish was already perfect and flavorful! - We all then split a passion fruit pie which was is small but relatively sweet. The passion fruit tart was already sweet on its own though the graham crackers somehow balance everything despite also being sweet. Even after several years this place still hits with big crowds! You owe it to yourself to come here at least once, whether you've had their khao mai gai the first time or not! They don't fail when it comes to that or their khao soi dishes. read more

Been wanting to go to Ginger & Scallion for forever and just now got the chance to go. Ginger & Scallion is a restaurant that specializes in one dish, before they only had Khao Mun Gai (Hainanese Chicken). Now they have Khao Soi, which is a Northern Thai Curry Egg Noodle Dish. Now, what makes them so special? The variety of meat you can eat with your Khao Soi. I came with my boyfriend about an hour into the opening at 6 PM and there was one table left by the window. We didn't prefer to be by the door so we kindly asked the employee that If there was another table available we'd like to be moved. Luckily, a table opened up right away! We ordered on our phones, I got the Duck Khao Soi, while my boyfriend got the lamb chop. The Khao Soi was portioned perfectly and the Duck was so soft and delectable. We both were able to almost finish our bowls on a with a full stomach. The Khao Soi really is the best. Like many places in Seattle, I think sometimes this place is a victim of it's own success. I've tried to go a few times but hadn't been able to due to crowds. Definitely have a back up plan or bring a snack if you're hungry! Finally I got in for a weekday lunch. It's an unassuming space, a little cramped--I liked sitting at the bar best. I never got a chance to try this spot when it was hainese chicken rice, but really wanted to for their khao soi. When we came around 6pm on a Friday there was already a huge crowd and we ended up waiting around 30 minutes before getting seated. They only serve khao soi, but have a ton of different protein options. I opted for the duck, which is why this review is 5 stars instead of 4. While I think the noodles and soup were nothing too spectacular, the duck itself was so so good. It was tender, juicy, and had the right amount of fat on it for the perfect bite. This spot used to be a hainan chicken place but they've shifted to serving khao soi. They have both table and bar seating in the restaurant. I love that they offer a variety of different protein options that you can get on your khao soi like beef tenderloin, oxtail, goat, lamb, duck, and tofu. We got the Duck Breast Khao Soi. The duck breast is perfectly seared, and it comes with egg noodles in their signature Khao Soi curry broth. The flavor of the broth has so much depth! Really delicious! The khao soi also has pickled mustard greens, scallion, cilantro, fresh and fried shallots, crispy egg noodles, and served with a wedge of lime. We also got the Oxtail Khao Soi. The curry braised oxtail was so incredibly tender! It truly falls right off the bone. They also have a Sai Ua Curry Sausage that's very popular! I've had this place on my list to try and today was the day. There was a wait when we got there at 12:30 PM on a Saturday and people were standing outside. You have to go inside to put your name on their waitlist. The restaurant is very small. The wait wasn't too bad. They only serve one dish here. It's a curry based broth with noodles, crispy noodles, crispy shallots and pickled mustard greens. What you get to choose is the meat. My daughter ordered the beef tenderloin and I ordered the oxtail. Order and pay on your phone using the QR code taped on the top of the table. The first bite was fantastic: flavorful, tenderloin was cooked well, oxtail was amazing with the meat just falling off the bone. Crispy noodles and shallots created lots of great texture. But Beware! The chopsticks are very thin and "weak" so if you aren't careful, when trying to pick up the noodles, broth will splash everywhere. I grew up using chopsticks so I have had some 50+ years of experience. It was good and I'm glad I tried it. Will I be back? I'm not sure... The first several bites were great but I found this broth heavy mid-way through the meal. Let's just say: lots of cream and very little vegetables. The Khao Soi became very monotonous and one-dimensional. The flavor was overwhelming because there wasn't any texture. All of the crispy elements had become soggy. My daughter suggested that the dish needed bok choy and I wholeheartedly agreed. Bok choy that adds a bit of crunch (texture) throughout the entire consumption of this dish and breaks up the heaviness of the broth with some freshness. The Thai ice tea was not as sweet though i mean at least from what other Thai ice tea i had before. The food though they only really serve khao soi and the meat was super tender definitely couldn't complain on the meat or the soup. Because it was very flavorful. The place is pretty small but definitely very accommodating if needed. We were celebrating a birthday and they were kind enough to provide additional plates and utensils at no extra charge. Finally got to try Ginger & Scallion after it being on my list for a long time. So happy that I went! We were seated at the bar, which is usually not my preference for seating in a restaurant, but I enjoyed being able to see the cooking process. My boyfriend and I both got the duck khao soi. The duck is sous vide and then they torch it after to give the skin a slight smoky flavor. They give you a lot of duck pieces!! The duck is very soft and cooked well. The broth was a little bit salty when I initially tried it, so I do recommend using the lime that they provide to help lessen the saltiness. Otherwise, the broth was very creamy and full of flavor. You can taste the coconut and the curry flavors blend together and it wasn't too heavy nor spicy. I just wish there was more crispy egg noodle and that it wasn't broken up into very tiny pieces. Even though the portion of the dish was good for me (I have a smaller stomach), I can see people wanting more noodles. They could have given more broth as well, as all of the noodles and fried shallots absorbed a ton of the liquid. But overall a very good khao soi that just left me wanting more. The restaurant is not that big. It is mainly made for groups of 2-4 people. It wasn't bad, but it lacked depth--no real aroma, no noticeable sweetness, just a very standard, forgettable broth. For a dish that depends heavily on the broth, it was a disappointment. The noodles were also undercooked. I know they emphasize their local Washington pasta from a pasta restaurant, but it didn't translate into anything special. Texture was off, and flavor-wise they just tasted like basic noodles. Portion size was on the smaller side, especially the protein. They also highlight their chili oil, but that didn't impress either. The jar on the table was mostly dried chili peppers with barely any oil left--definitely needed a refill. I got the wagyu khao soi and my intern got the goat khao soi. Our bowls came out quickly and piping hot. The steak was cooked to PERFECTTIONNN and I could tell just from the first look. First bite was phenomenal and I was instantly hooked. Broth has so much flavor to it - my only complaint is I wish there was more! I could've had so many more spoonfuls of it. The noodles were also a great texture. For me, Ginger & Scallion lived up to the online hype. Ginger & Scallion is a small local restaurant in Phinney Ridge that only serves one main dish. Formerly, this used to be chicken rice, but has since transitioned to khao soi. Each dish on the menu is almost exactly the same. They feature the same signature khao soi curry broth, with the same egg noodles, and the same garnishes. The only choice there is to make is to select a protein. The proteins vary drastically in price, with both cheap, unique, and premium cuts being offered. On the low end, Ginger & Scallion offers tofu and braised beef for 16 dollars, while the most expensive option is an A5 wagyu cut from Kagoshima for 40 dollars. In addition to this, they also offer goat, oxtail, lamb chops, and more standard duck breast and steak cuts. I believe the most popular protein is the duck breast. But since everyone in my party opted for the duck breast, I went for the beef tenderloin. I wanted something more neutral and standard, as well as something I was super familiar with to fairly judge the dish on my first visit. To begin, it wasn't clear that there wasn't really table service. We were instructed to find any open table, and when we sat down, I was sort of expecting someone to greet us or see if we had any questions about anything. Instead, there is a qr code that directs to their online ordering system. Again, it wasn't super clear that we were supposed to put in an order through the website, or if it was just a menu for reference under the assumption that someone would come by to take our order shortly. After the fact, I noticed that there was a chalkboard at the front that said this, but being directed immediately, I didn't get the chance to read it. I wish someone had also told us as we were sitting down. The space itself is quite small. I didn't feel cramped, but tables are positioned very close to one another without a ton of room even to pull chairs without hitting someone behind. There are also some booths, but again, the tables are so close to each other that there isn't really privacy. I didn't really mind this, but I could definitely see this being an issue for others. Food came out relatively quickly. Considering they only serve one dish and only need to prepare the proteins, this makes sense. It is what keeps people moving in and out of the restaurant without building up super long waits. The khao soi had a very fragrant aroma. I could immediately tell that the broth would be super flavorful. Visually, everything looked on point. The beef appeared to be perfectly cooked, the garnishes looked fresh and provided a beautiful contrast in colors while being uniformly portioned to match each other. Out of everything in the bowl, I was most curious about the broth. I tried it on its own without anything else. As expected, it was very solid. It was punchy and rich in flavor, with a nice balance of sweetness and acidity, with just a hint of spice. I actually wish it had been a little bit spicier, but it was still yummy nonetheless. I then tried the beef. It wasn't as tender as I thought it would be. Biting a piece off wasn't necessarily a challenge, but it took enough effort that I wish it were cut once more to be bite-sized. The beef was not a perfect complement to the khao soi, nor did it stand out on its own, but it didn't hurt the dish. I also had a bite of my friend's duck. The meat itself was extremely tender and flavorful. The only gripe I had was that the skin wasn't crispy at all. If not for that, it would have been an amazing duck. Mixing everything together, I thought the dish was delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked. They were bouncy and slightly chewy while also picking up a lot of the broth. All of the fresh components provided a nice textural contrast to all of the softer ingredients. The fried noodles on top were great, I just wished there were more. Overall, I loved the broth and all of the components within the khao soi, but next time I'll go for a different protein. The atmosphere and lack of interaction in service don't make Ginger & Scallion a great space to linger. However, it feels really intentional. As a restaurant aiming to serve delicious food to people simply looking for a hearty and delicious meal, Ginger & Scallion does just that. What a great bowl of food. I have heard of this place and have been wanting to check it out for forever! It did not disappoint at all. We got there on a chilly, weekday evening but still the restaurant was packed! It is a small space so if you have a large party, I would suggest trying to get there early to get your name down on the waitlist. Prior to going to the restaurant, we tried calling in to make a reservation but it seems like that is not a solid option as they did not pick up the phone. Parking there can be difficult so I suggest trying to grab some parking in the neighborhoods nearby! They only serve one dish, Khao Soi, with a variety of meat options. That made ordering super easy and I was confident that my choice would be one of the right ones. My partner and I both got a bowl, I got the duck and they got the braised beef. We highly suggest requesting a few extra lime slices to really brighten up the dish. After ordering through the QR code, we quickly got our drinks and then quickly got our bowls of Khao Soi. Within the first bite, we knew that this would be one of the best bites of food we would have all week. The broth is rich but also bright and the noodles are so perfectly chewy and flavorful. The duck was cooked perfectly and the braised beef was so tender. and provided an explosion of flavor. My partner could not finish their bowl and was able to get two servings out of their meal so it is definitely a generous dish. Overall, this is a solid place for a nice warm meal on any day. Ordering and payment happens individually through QR code and your phone. Everything on the menu is khao soi - the difference is the meats. We came here expecting the chicken and rice dish we had seen in the past but realized they only have khao soi now. I'm usually not the biggest soup noodles fan but I love and good khao soi and this one was solid so can't complain about menu change! The curry was flavourful, the meat was well cooked and the house made noodles and toppings brought everything together. They only had one type of dish in the menu but they have that dish down! The flavors were rich, balanced, and deeply satisfying.
