Was excited to try this place but the food mediocre at best. The crabcakes were flat and had absolutely no lump crab. The cream of crab soup was bland. We also ordered a patty melt, it wasn't anything to write home about. The unsweet tea was old and tasted a bit sour, the sweet tea was made with simple syrup, it was pretty thick. I am a big fan of this place. It is my weekend morning go-to spot. The food is pretty good, and the prices are excellent. I also find the staff very friendly. On my last visit they provided me some much needed local knowledge regarding things to do in the city - going way out of their way to help someone new to the city during a busy morning rush. With the re-gentrification of the neighborhood, finding parking for dining is harder. Breakfast and lunch are still do-able. It fairly oozes Baltimore. This place manages to be both a local diner and a tourist trap. The local diner part is good reasonably priced diner food and friendly service. The tourist trap part is the grossly overpriced signature crab cakes. Our crab cake platters were $59 each, a price that does not appear on the menu, which simply says market price. Free wifi and large booths with a plug the waitress offered me in the back. After doing a little work I decided it would not be fair to yelp to by order something... I went with the crab cake breakfast which included two eggs, toast and bacon. The crab cake was close to perfect. The texture and consistency of the crab meat tasted fresh and the seasoning made it a perfect treat. The cake is lightly browned on both sides with large chunks of crab. The iced coffee was good and the rye toast was better quality than what I would expect from a diner. The eggs were standard and cooked over easy as requested. My only negative about the place is that it is a little run down in the inside and there are only a few stools. I ordered the fried calamari & fried mozzarella sticks for take-out in the diner. The drive was only 5 mins away, so I was surprised when my food was soggy when I opened my orders. The mozzarella sticks were cold, the cheese didn't pull-- they were just hard. I love calamari, but these were so disappointing. For the price I paid, I got about 1/3 of the portions I expected! They were also cold & soggy. They were overly fried as well and seasoned terribly. This was my first time ordering & I highly doubt I will order again. Meh, definitely overhyped. Came with two friends on a Friday night. We were the only ones there so service was quick. I ordered the DDD special, which was a slice of spanakopita and a crab cake. The crab cake was good, large chunks of meat, but not the best that I've had in Baltimore. The spanakopita was super disappointing. The phyllo wasn't flaky, but a little stale. It seemed like the spanakopita was baked a long time ago and was just reheated. This all cost over $20 and it was definitely not worth it. After an arduous journey from the American Visionary Museum we were able to reach the talk of the town that my significant other had been raving about. We entered the restaurant when it was empty (probably because of the heavy rain) and the waitress greeted us to their beautiful diner home. However, both times I've been here I have liked the food and had a good time. The Phelps "Dessert" is realllly tasty. It is a bit small though, so if you are REAL hungry, get a side of something! Last time I was here, I got the breakfast vegetarian, which is an egg sandwich with a veggie burger on it. The veggie burger was thick and quite good. It came with hash browns that had veggies in it, they were pretty tasty! I also got a side of greek yogurt. It was thick, fairly creamy, and came with blueberries and strawberries on top, as well as honey mixed in. I wish it had more honey, but overall it was pretty okay. But really, the price is super cheap compared to a lot of other breakfast places in Baltimore. And no wait on a Saturday at noon for a party of 7? I'll surely come back. For now, however, I must say I was rather disappointed in the Sip & Bite. I perused the menu and was about to order a gyro when I saw that the Sip and Bite advertised "cooked to order" burgers. I consider myself a bit of a "burger aficionado" so I cautiously ordered a bacon cheese burger to see if the waitress would actually ask me how I wanted it done. SHE DID! I happily told her I wanted it cooked medium rare. We had to wait a rather long time for the food to come out, which I found odd as the place was only perhaps half full. I've visited once before and had a great experience, but breakfast is a completely different situation. The place is PACKED, booths are cramped and it's hot. It took half an hour and finally a request for someone to take our order. I sat with an empty coffee cup for a significant amount of time and finally had to ask the manager for a refill because I could not catch the attention of my server--even though he passed by multiple times since we were seated at the counter. My husband's Monte Cristo was DRENCHED in their melba sauce and whipped cream, despite assurances from the server as we ordered at all sauce would come on the side. The service was beyond terrible - our just plain rude waitress opened by asking what we wanted to drink, but declaring that we could not order water. They were apparently out of water. They also didn't have some of the menu options, and when asked for a glass of orange juice, the waitress simply said "no," before eventually bringing it. The food itself was pretty bad as well. The coffee (which they magically had water for) was disgusting. The garden omelet resembled a construction zone, with day old vegetables glued to runny eggs with a yellow cheese paste. The best part of the meal was my girlfriend's french toast, which she enjoyed because it was drowned in packets of maple syrup. The food was good. I didn't think anything particularly special. The chicken and the lamb was nicely seasoned and the pita bread was nice and soft. The honey feta fries were interesting. Never had a combo of honey and feta on fries. My friend didn't particularly think the mezze platter was good but she didn't think it was bad either. So all in all, the food was pretty good. When I find myself spending time in the four-one-oh, I often talk listfully about the superior dining options (crabs aside, of course) in every other metropolitan area in the universe and lament about how hard it is to find diverse food in this city. Nope, its still not diverse, but it is the dives like Sip & Bite that endear me to Baltimore ever so little bit more when I visit home lately. Along with their polar opposite counterparts - the trendy and upscaleish restaurants that have (finally) begun springing up like weeds within the city limits. With the swarm of the new-and-exciting in close proximity to "you'll only find it here, hon" classics, nowadays Baltimore is tugging on my heart in a fond way much unlike my disgruntled years past. And so this is how I felt in the wee hours of Sunday morning when I wandered into this previously undiscovered gem that 1) has apparently been around longer than Hairspray, unbeknownst to me and 2) has apparently already been discovered by every other person under 30 in Canton. It was love at first onion ring. Take one look, and you can just picture Guy Fieri pulling up in front, making a stopover for a late night crabcake sandwich or gyro before its on to find the next great deep fryer for the Food Network. It's a dive. Plain and simple. But oh, its a glorious dive with a warm neon glow that will bring tears to your eyes with thoughts of midnight munchies. It will draw you in and make you drunk on the idea of getting your grubby hands on the greasiest of fried food (wait, no, you were already drunk before that. Nevermind.) You will want it so bad, that you will suffer the atrocities of a staggering line, annoying inebriated twentysomethings, and gruff service so rushed that your waiter probably won't even register the features on your face before she clears your booth to usher in another group of intoxicated patrons. (It doesn't matter. You won't remember her face in the morning, either.) The best part? The check that shows up after your gorge-fest at under $10. I challenge you to spend a penny more and still leave here hungry. read more
