Hangover Hash
Alexis B.

I had brunch with my husband and a couple of friends at Silver Queen Cafe a couple of weeks ago after having it on our to try list for a while. I love its vibe - casual, homey, a little eclectic. The service was also very good. I had a Bloody Mary and their Hangover Hash (fried chicken livers, two eggs sunny side up, home fries, pork sausage gravy, really hot sauce). The Bloody Mary was classic, and I enjoyed it. My meal on the other hand was so-so. The gravy had good flavor, and I thought the home fries were well cooked as well. But the chicken livers were way overcooked for me (they had that chalky texture they get when they're overcooked), which always makes me sad (chicken livers are one of those things that are great when cooked properly but pretty awful when cooked poorly). Just based on the cook on the chicken livers, I would not order the dish again, but I also didn't get the hot sauce at all, and the dish really could have used some acid/brightness since it's a heavy dish. Everyone else enjoyed their meal. I ordered something a bit riskier, and it didn't pay off, but the other dishes seemed hits with my husband and friends. I did enjoy that their menu has some less common brunch items on it! It's not just the same dishes you can get on every brunch menu in the city: duck benedict, shrimp and grits, scrapple benedict, pickle brined fried chicken sandwich... Overall, it's a brunch spot with some traditional, homey charm and a more interesting menu than the average brunch spot. I'd definitely be willing to return and try something else if I'm in the area.

Silver Queen is one of the absolute best restaurants in the entire city, HANDS DOWN. Once a residence in its past life, it's now a kitschy, chill spot filled with plants, consignment art and R&B music. Staff is consistently friendly with extensive menu knowledge. Shout out to Karen, who's been working there for some years now! No idea why I'm just getting around to reviewing my spot after all these years, but here goes... On my recent visit, I came with friends determined to pay SQ yet another visit. We got a few things to share: The peach French toast was unbelievably good. The Southerners in our group all agreed that it had a bread pudding consistency that was nothing but the truth. Peaches and the crumble took it to the next level. One friend ordered scrambled eggs, bacon, and grits which were clearly a hit. Another friend got the brined chicken sandwich which is always a good choice- crispy outside and tender flavorful inside. Great sides of potatoes and braised greens are never a bad choice. I had an omelette off of the featured item menu, and it did not disappoint. Overall, it's consistently a great place that I encourage everyone to check out.

Stopped by on Halloween for the Federal Worker freebie they are offering and they did not disappoint! They have meter parking outside on the street but there is a CVS parking lot nearby (just saying). They stay open pretty late which is also nice. I got the pickle brined fried chicken sandwich with fries & a ginger ale. The sandwich was good and so were the fries! It's a bit bready and the chicken could have been seasoned a bit more but customer service was excellent. If you're a federal worker or someone who wants good food in this area, def stop by!!

Duck breast benedict

Well we had been recommended this place by several people and were a little disappointed; hopefully just a fluke. They have a cute cozy interior and a few little tables outside. Our server took very good care of us. We ordered the special which was a $29 duck breast eggs benedict and a side of scrapple. The scrapple was great and hot. The flavors for the main dish were good but aside from the eggs themselves, the rest of the dish was lukewarm to cold which gave the grits a congealed texture and the cold duck was just not doing it for us. We let our server know who said she'd ask the owner about a discount but came out with the full-price bill and no other mention of it. Update: the owner has since corrected this. We're hopeful for our next try!

As always showed up early to a meeting with my recent departed brother' son. Needed a breakfast spot- a lil funky, eclectic, and nostalgic but not many vegetarian items, but will taste offerings, home fries, egg white w cheddar cheese he had pancake, egg w cheese, home fries. . Wait staff was accommodating of my early arrival. Water w lime juice, spring sangria was fizzy but good, breakfast was average, but for this and 2 sangria didn't equate to a $61 2 people bill

This place was so wonderful! I was blown away by the entire experience. It has a very unassuming cafe vibe but the food is amazing and elevated for sure! Also the drinks were to die for! I really got way more than I bargained for here. My favorite thing was the chorizo fries. The service was also great. Would come here for brunch anytime.

Caramel Apple French Toast with Sausage

The Silver Queen Cafe is a quaint hidden gem. Reservations are best since there aren't many tables but what is there is clean and well decorated. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable about the drink specials and menu options. We ordered the caramel apple French toast and the shrimp and grits. The French toast was light, fluffy, and full of warming spices. The sweetness of the cooked apples was an excellent compliment to the spices within the sausage. The shrimp and grits came with a variety of flavors. The vinegary bite of the greens with the smooth grits and well seasoned shrimp made for a delectable bite. The strawberry lemonade was fresh and a welcome palate cleanser. Im excited to return to try more of the menu.

All 3 of our entrees were PHENOMENAL. We had pasta dish, a pizza and the fried chicken. It was toe-curling good.

Ask the Community - Silver Queen Cafe

Any more vegan options.on the menu?

Nope! I wish. Just that same dumb burrito, which has gotten really old.

Are there gluten free options?

I thought they had a fair amount of options for dinner!

Did you remove duck pizza and duck fries from your menu? I really love them I could only order them once and never see them back in the menu after!

They are usually on the menu in the fall and winter. For spring and summer we run Maryland Crab Fries and we have a Crab and Shrimp Pizza.

Carry out available at all?

Yes

This is Puerto Rican pitorro, also known as ron cañita, made with care and intention rather than gimmickry. Many local liquor stores now carry the brand, and it is well worth picking up a bottle, but visiting the distillery is an experience in itself. The founder is a fellow Puerto Rican born retired military member, a background I share, and like me, he has put down roots in Maryland. That story is reflected clearly in the brand's own framing, "Puerto Rican born, Maryland made." The space feels grounded and unpretentious, and that sensibility carries through to the hospitality. We arrived late on a Saturday and were still welcomed warmly, never rushed. We were taken care of by the founder's daughter, who was exceptionally kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. She guided us through a flight that included the traditional pitorro, almond, pineapple, coffee, coconut chai, and several seasonal offerings. The flavors were thoughtful and well balanced; even the infused expressions retained a clear rum backbone rather than drifting into novelty. We enjoyed them enough to leave with several bottles. This is artisanal pitorro done right, rooted in Puerto Rican tradition and confidently made in Maryland. Buying it locally is convenient, but going to the distillery is where the people, the story, and the spirit fully come together.

Whether sitting at the bar or at their super comfy couches, it's very inviting to stay awhile. Drinks - Old Line specializes in two spirits: rum and whiskey. Don't be fooled; they have varieties of those two options in terms of aging and blending process for a grand total of five products. When I went, $15 got us a flight of every spirit they produce - and they don't skimp! I thought it would be a little 1/2 oz tasting, but this was just shy of a full shot each, so I ended up sharing with my companions. Speaking of flights, they also offer flights by style. For example, if you are more of a rum person, they have a flight of their rums as well as some from other local distilleries. Ditto for the whiskeys. A nice touch promoting competitors in the spirit of... well, spirits! The cocktails were great. I got a daiquiri - a proper daiquiri with lime and rum. Not to hate on a spiked strawberry smoothie, but this is the OG daiquiri (and the better one, IMHO). I also split the Liberty Risk, made with their Navy Strength cask rum, with my companions. They limit you to one because it is STRONG. Suffice it to say I ended up staying a little longer than originally planned. Overall, they have six regular cocktails and one or two specials. They also offer a couple of local beers on tap, but we came for the spirits. If you enjoyed the cocktails, they sell the Old Line spirits as well as some bar tools so you can try your hand at home. The prices aren't too bad for what it is and service is fast and friendly. I look forward to coming back!

She it made seem taboo. Sooooo...I go stand by the doorway and after 1-2 mins I ask her what does she recommend I do...then she tells me I can stand at the bar. I don't drink, and in the past Mike has always taken great care of me and understood that. This was my first time dealing with the other bartenders, and unfortunately, it didn't go well. When I sat at a table and tried to order, the bartender wouldn't make eye contact and never came back after I mentioned that I don't drink. He focused on everyone else around me instead. I moved to the bar hoping things would improve, but it was more of the same--being looked past and ignored. The kindest moment of the night actually came from the chef, who brought my cauliflower bites out himself, still piping hot. He confirmed they were mine, smiled, set them down, and headed back to the kitchen. I had ordered buffalo bites, but they came out plain, and it took some effort to get the bartender's attention just to ask for the sauce--though once I had it, the bites were truly delicious. By then I was over it, especially as I watched him continue to cater to everyone else. I ate and waited for my bill. It was karaoke night, so I sang a few songs to pass the time, but still no check. Eventually, I managed to get the (still nameless) bartender to bring it, and I left. I've been here before and usually enjoy the place, but this visit wasn't great.
