Lunch boxes on display at The Lunch Box. I loved the Yellow Submarine lunchbox!
Mary R.

I really like The Lunch Box in Hampden because it offers diner fare in a downhome dive atmosphere. And, they have a collection of vintage lunchboxes that is definitely worth checking out. I needed breakfast! I got the 2 eggs (over easy) with bacon, hash browns, toast, and coffee for about $10. This was not at all greasy and was really well cooked. I ate every single piece of food that was on my plate. Service is friendly and if you are lucky, you might get to see some regulars. Thank you, Lunch Box, on the Avenue in Hampden!

The Lunch Box was that local spot in Hampden that I always saw but never cared to go until recently. We wanted to eat at a different place but faced with long wait times we ended up here. The Lunch Box is your classic no-frills American dinner. And when I saw no-frills I really do mean none, menu is super basic but cheap which a plus I guess. Ordered the chocolate chip hot cakes with sausage and scrambled eggs. Service was a little slow and there was quite a bit of waiting to order and then again for our waters and a wait for then the food even though they weren't super busy. Food was decent and for the price you can't really complain but at the same time it wasn't anything special. Portion sizes were decent too which made the meal a decent value overall. Would I come here again though? Ehhh probably not. I wouldn't say this place is bad or horrible but it doesn't really stand out in any way. If you want to spend some money during the weekend on a nice brunch then The Lunch Box wouldn't be the place to go. Pretty much everything they make here is basically what you could make at home.

Next to Squidfire, across from Golden West on The Avenue.

This place just opened up in Hampden. It occupies the former Mike's Place location across from Golden West on the Avenue. We stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Nothing fancy about this little place that specializes in breakfast and lunch. It's a straightforward breakfast joint; eggs, home fries, coffee, breakfast meats. I had the eggs, corned beef hash, and home fries. My wife had eggs and bacon. Hearty portions and just what you'd expect; a great breakfast. The thing that set the Lunch Box apart was the prices. About half as much as you are going to spend at Golden West or Cafe Hon. Golden West may have more exotic breakfast options, but The Lunch Box was exactly the same quality as Cafe Hon at about half the price! Definitely recommend!

Cheeseburger with fries and french toast with 2 eggs and bacon. The fries taste just like fries from Popeyes!

This place is a very casual and cheap place to get quick food. However, it's not the cleanest place in the world. As soon as we were seated, I was given a dirty fork that still had remains of some dried up egg yolk. Other than that, the food was pretty good. It's not anything gourmet but it'll fix your dirty food cravings. My boyfriend ordered the cheeseburger with fries (their fries taste just like the Popeyes fries!). I ordered the French Toast with two eggs and bacon. The prices are pretty good too. I give two stars even though the food was good. It's pretty dirty in there and you kind of feel dirty after eating too. PS- I read somewhere on the reviews they only take cash. They take cards, just not American express

We popped in right at 7 one morning before work and actually beat the server and the hostess there. The staff was friendly and mostly left us alone but for frequent coffee refills, and the food was about what I expected from a restaurant that is basically a different version of IHOP. The bacon was thick and crispy and way better quality than anticipated and the over easy eggs were cooked perfectly, which is rare. The protein and buckwheat pancakes were nice surprises on the menu and were quite tasty. The neighborhood has a dearth of true weekday breakfast places, and this is a nice option. It's also huge and could easily accommodate a large crowd.

Ordering the Florentine Benadict fresh tomato, spinach, and the best hollandaise sauce I've tasted. It comes with a side of french toast, made with fresh brioche brought it daily from a Baltimore bakery. We also tried the Shrimp Skillet, fresh jumbo shrimp on potatoes with avocado, spinach, peppers and two eggs your way. There is a wide selection of all things delicious on the menu that will definitely have us coming back for more!! Our server Kate was awesome!! She made excellent and honest recommendations such as the Florentine Benedict hyping the up French toast as it deserves. OPH closes daily at 2:30 but you'll want to get there early, certain menu items are made to order and will be a 30 - 45 minute wait. They are also happy to accommodate large parties!

I was a little put off that all of the seating is booths, which can be a little uncomfortable to the people I dine with, who prefer more space between themselves and a fixed table. We were told to seat ourselves. We did. it took a couple minutes for us to be acknowledged by one of the five or so servers who were bustling about. Service was friendly and fairly attentive. The Maryland Cab soup was good, with a lot of crab and a decent amount of spiciness. I had a French dip type sandwich with fries. I asked for my fries to be extra crispy, they were served kind of soggy and cold. The au jus for my sandwich was literally cold. That said, the food was basic but good. This is a standard decent diner. I don't know what the reviewer who said this place is in "the hood" is talking about. It's on a well-lit strip of road with car dealerships all over. No need to stress over the location at all.

They cook them with onions which isn't my preference (but easy to pick around and I'm sure I could have asked for them without), and they also just didn't have a lot of flavor to me. The corned beef hash was good, nice and crispy. The eggs were fluffy and had a generous amount of cheesy goodness. I tasted my bf's French toast and bacon, both of those were good. Overall, this is a cool spot to check out and enjoy the classic diner vibe!

Kay's Diner is a nostalgic, cozy Black-owned diner in Baltimore. As soon as I entered, I felt the love! The owner Kay and the manager Sheim are frequently walking around checking in on their guests. We sat next to a couple regulars who were known by the employees by name. It stands out a lot to me when a business has regulars that are treated like family. They offer counter-top seating as well as a few booths. The menu is extensive offering way more than classic diner breakfast, lunch & dinner. I ordered the French toast combo with a side of potatoes. It was a satisfying meal overall! Eggs were fried hard with cheese, potatoes were well seasoned, bacon was crispy! My only distaste is that they used regular bread rather than brioche for their French toast. The flavor on the French was amazing, it's topped with a cinnamon sugar butter. I washed everything down with an amazing Arnold Palmer. The Perfect balance of tea and lemonade. The coco bread was buttery and light, a delicious treat. My friend and I decided to share one their fresh pressed seamoss juices. It was good! -Customer service is amazing! The employees really treat you like family. -Free street parking available close by. -Countertop and booth seating. Plenty of TVs. -Prices are average. French toast combo was $14.99. I'll definitely be a regular here. I hope you enjoy!
