I've been to Miss Shirley's three or four times because I genuinely wanted to support a Black-owned business. I kept coming back thinking maybe I'd have a better experience, but after this visit, I don't see myself returning. To be fair, one thing they do well is seating. I've always been seated quickly, even when it's busy, and the location is convenient. The food, however, has been consistently average. During this visit, I was seated inside and spent a good part of my meal swatting away flies, which wasn't pleasant. I ordered the omelet with hash browns and a biscuit. The biscuit was easily the best part of the meal. warm, soft, and buttery. The omelet was oily, and the hash browns were cold by the time they reached the table. My friend ordered the cheeseburger and said the bun tasted stale. It was falling apart as she ate it, which made the meal even more disappointing. I really wanted to love this place, but after several visits, I just don't think the food lives up to its reputation. Baltimore has so many excellent brunch spots that consistently deliver better food and a better overall experience. At this point, Miss Shirley's feels more like a destination for tourists than a place locals return to because the food keeps them coming back. Honestly, I was not prepared for Miss Shirley's to actually be this good. We ordered so many different types of things and I wasn't disappointed in any of them. We pulled up randomly on a Saturday after walking around for brunch. We were seated in about 20 minutes, despite them not taking reservations. When we were seated, I was immediately impressed by the Kids activities they offer. For Kids, they give them an etch a sketch and a card with things like conversation, starters and trivia, to promote convo and no screen time. Love! I actually like how they treat kids as a whole. Instead of a typical kids "meal," they essentially have a Kids Bento box that is automatically served with fresh fruit and applesauce or yogurt. Everything about it was super cute. Service overall: overall, the service here was pretty good. Well, I do feel like it took a bit for refills at one point, our server was really attentive and made some good recommendations. Food: wow! The food here was really good. We got the fried green tomatoes and added crab on top. It was bomb. I can't remember the exact name of the skillet I got, but I got the skillet that had fried chicken, one of their bomb everything but the bagel biscuits, greens, gravy, an egg and cheddar grits. I am rarely blown away by everything on my plate, but I have to acknowledge that everything in the skillet had great flavor on its own and when combined. At our table, we were not disappointed by anything. We spent about $127 on brunch for three adults and one kid, all with beverages. I think there might've been one cocktail. We also had an appetizer. I know this Maryland favorite . However,my food was very disappointing I sent two entrees back . I ordered the "great your grits on " blackened salmon no blackened seasoning they use oldbay. The waiteness suggested the fried chicken gravy omelette under cooked and chicken was hard . When cut the omelette eggs started running .This also was sent back .Buffalo Shrimp Deviled Egg Platter . Was ok great presentation however need some salt and mayonnaise not creamy .The manager was great was still trying to satisfy me I keep my grits and ordered a side of bacon . It is a Baltimore icon for a reason! The Inner Harbor location is just as good as the original too. True, parking can be tricky, but there are plenty of public garages within a short walk. The food... stellar. Just be warned, the portions are huge!! So, if the prices seem a touch high, keep in mind, you'll easily have two meals from one entrée! The service was good, very quick, and very friendly. The location is perfect too, right at the end of the main stretch of the inner harbor walk (Pratt Street). We went during the holiday season, and the seasonal offerings were really good! Their main menu is always delectable though. It was a tough decision! Miss Shirley's was theeeeee perfect Saturday breakfast/brunch spot to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. We had heard great things about this spot from our realtor and used the occasion as an opportunity to check it out! from the second we walked in to Miss Shirley's, the vibe felt warm and inviting. They were playing oldies, it was cozy inside, and after coming in from the freezing cold it honestly felt like a much needed hug. When you walk in, one thing you can't miss is how many awards they have posted all over the walls (especially if your entire party isn't there as they don't seat without the whole party being there and you have to sit in the waiting area up front). This restaurant has a million awards and articles highlighting their crab cakes. After seeing all the buzz on the wall, we came in to the restaurant excited to order the crab cake Benedict, only to find out they no longer serve crab cakes. Our waitress explained that they removed them because they weren't meeting the restaurant's "standard," which I guess I respect, but we were still genuinely so sad because that's what we were most looking forward to. Thankfully, their menu is full of amazing sounding meals and we're still able to end up having a really good meal. One person in our group ordered the shrimp and grits, two of us got the chicken and waffles and swapped the honey mustard aioli for hot honey, and the fourth ordered the banana bread French toast. Overall everything was tasty, but the chicken on the chicken and waffles was a little overcooked and tough, which was the only real downside. The clear star of the table was the shrimp and grits. The plating was unique and really tasteful, and it somehow elevated such a classic comfort dish. It was honestly some of the best shrimp and grits I've had up north. We also ordered a side of hash browns and those were amazing too, super crispy and satisfying. Service was another big highlight. Our waitress was so kind and attentive, and we felt taken care of the entire time. Everything's been said about Miss Shirley's Cafe so I'll just talk about myself. I might need more glamorous profile photos since I only got one like in 9 years on my last Shirley's review. Sure, it's flattering that fake-seeming bots send me DMs, but what I can really use is some better review metrics. The Crabby Omelet was action-packed. Even the cheddar is crabby and the grits are more vivid than usual. It's best to go on the crab side of things but if you don't dig on crustaceans at least stick to the oven-mitt logo entrees. Don't miss the stunning grapefruit brulee. I haven't sampled the Kid's Boxes but can verify that years ago, a customer around two years old was absolutely thrilled with the visual aspect before taking a bite, rapidly waving his hands. I don't know how anyone could give this place fewer than five stars; if I could, I would give it six! The food was absolutely amazing. I had the Southern Slammer Sandwich (with the grits) and my sister had the Fried Chicken, Biscuit and Gravy Omelet (with the hash browns). We couldn't stop saying how good they were! The service was on point, everyone was very nice, and the noise level was fine. Here is something I literally have never experienced anywhere else: My sister has a couple of food allergies and she gave the waitress a piece of paper where she listed out what she can and cannot have. A few minutes later, a lovely young woman (I think she said she was a manager) came out and discussed the list with my sister in detail, just to make sure the restaurant got it exactly right. My sister almost cried! As far as timing goes: They don't take reservations, but they have an efficient system -- when you arrive, they take down your name and phone number, tell you how long the wait will be, and then text you when it's your turn. They told us 40 minutes but it turned out to be only 20, so it's good we hadn't wandered too far away. Next time we're in Baltimore, we'll definitely be back. read more

The best brunch place I've had ever! From start to finish, it was the best, and most kid-friendly experience ever! The host was amazing and was already preparing kids activities for us, once he saw us outside the door. The restaurant was just about full when we arrived at 11. The menu offers both breakfast and lunch items at that time. I opted for the blackened shrimp and grits. The mound of grits sat on a fried green tomato and sitting on the mound of grits were two delicious pieces of shrimp. My husband had the hot honey fried chicken wrap. It was our servers Birthday and she ran her section like a pro. We had vegetable omelet, biscuit and side salad and the banana split parfait with vanilla yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, raisan granola and pineapple ring. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. Once you come in you'll have to be placed on the wait list. I believe it was about 20 minutes. They will text you when it's time to check in. You'll then check in with the host and there may be an additional 5-10 minute wait; again, it's worth it. We went on a Saturday morning around 11am. It was busy and I have a feeling it's like that all the time. It's cute and clean. We ate on the back patio (inside/sheltered). I ordered the CINNAMON APPLE BREAD FRENCH TOAST, scrambled eggs, and chicken sausage. The French toast reminded me of honey bun cake, if you know, you know lol. Once we arrived, we saw how much acclaim Miss Shirley's has received, such as from Restaurant Hospitality Magazine and Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I can see why! To start, I really enjoyed the pimento cheese biscuit and the Shirley's Crush cocktail was quite refreshing. For my main, I went with the Southern Slammer Sandwich, which already sounded good but I couldn't pass up a winner of the best breakfast sandwich in America according to Restaurant Hospitality Magazine. Absolutely delicious. I loved the simple ingredients yet their flavor together was unforgettable. A great sandwich and not overly heavy in my opinion. The stone ground grits were incredible as well. I got the chicken and waffles ($22) and I have to say the chicken itself was not seasoned and the waffles were pretty dry. I was very disappointed in my dish as it had no flavor. I also tried the crab hash eggs Benedict ($32). There was a decent amount of crab meat, which I appreciated. However, the poached egg was not runny at all as it should be. The spicy Bloody Mary ($15) was pretty good. They don't have Tito's vodka, they only have Three Olives vodka. The garnish was nice. It came with okra, a stuffed olive, a lemon and lime wedge, and a slice of green tomato. The Sunrise Mimosa ($12) was okay not the best. Not sure what kind of champagne they used, but personally, it wasn't to my liking. The service was a bit slow, but our server, Tara, was very kind and knowledgeable. It did take a while for us to put our order in, but as mentioned before the restaurant was crowded. Unfortunately, if you need to use the restroom, you need to take the elevator to the third floor to the sky lobby because they do not have one at the restaurant. Service was friendly and helpful, and the latest menu looked pretty good (although there were missing my all-time favorite menu option of bbq Mac&cheese). Where things really fell down was the food itself. I got the bbq grilled cheese sandwich which was much more of a warm sandwich on toasted bread. Nothing like the buttery grilled cheese would have expected. The bread was basically dry toast, and the cheese wasn't melted and the bbq was basically room temperature. Flavors were fine, just a bit disappointing. My wife got an omelet that was impressively large, but also impressively bland. Hot sauce helped a lot, but the chicken in the omelet had zero seasoning on it, and the veggies didn't help much. Again, not inedible, and dramatically improved with hot sauce, but not something we would order again. I do want to re-state how good the service is. The menu for GF folks is ample, marked right on the standard menu so no need to ask for a special menu or struggle to figure out what you can and cannot have. I branched out a little this time and tried the Breakfast Tower I think, has plain GF pancakes (although the flavored ones are amazing!), grits, bacon, deviled eggs, and a delicious strawberry mocktail.
