Great, no-frills breakfast place in Hampden. Went on a Sunday during prime brunch time and we were seated immediately. Service was fast and friendly and the prices are hard to beat. The food overall isn't anything spectacular, but it is very well done for the basic menu. I got a breakfast sandwich with bacon and cheese on an english muffin, and the egg/bacon were cooked to perfection. Whenever I'm in Baltimore, I have to come to The Lunch Box at least once. This no-frills breakfast spot is my favorite incentive for waking up and crawling out of bed. My boyfriend and I call this place "Korean breakfast", not because there's anything particularly Korean about the food, but because of the friendly Korean family that runs the place. The first day my boyfriend and I stumbled upon The Lunch Box, one of the cooks came out from behind the stove to chat with us. Now the family greets us familiarly every time we go and we leave with a cheery "Come back again!" chasing us out. I've never been a consistent regular at a restaurant where the staff treats me this well, and we're not alone in the good treatment! I've never had to wait to get a table. Service is usually very good and the food comes out quickly. I get the same order every time, A6, which consists of two pancakes, eggs cooked any way and my choice of meat (which my boyfriend inevitably bogarts). The dish is so satisfying and well-balanced. Not too much pancake, not too many eggs or meat. My boyfriend usually gets some combo of eggs, potatoes and bacon and digs in like he's never seen food before. I've never left The Lunch Box hungry or unhappy. For someone who loves breakfast as much as I do, The Lunch Box has been one of the greatest finds in Hampden. read more

I used to like this place a lot. I have been coming here for years. The Cream Chipped Beef was horrible. Initially, I asked for chicken salad sandwich and they didn't have it. I asked for a tuna salad sandwich and the server said she did not recommend it. My boyfriend and his friend said their food wasn't good and had to beg for coffee and water. Completely ridiculous. Came to this area to stop at one of the local stores, was there a bit early (9:30am) and this was one of the only places open for breakfast. We walked in, the lady at the counter greater us and gave us the option to sit at any table we liked. She took our drink orders and gave us a minute to look at the menu. They had typical breakfast foods; bacon, eggs, hash browns, pancakes, etc. There was an old newspaper article on the wall that stated they had the best hash browns in town. We ordered our food and had it very quickly. The wheat toast was actually whole grain, and was pre-buttered, which I liked. For 3 people our meal was under $25. The staff were nice, even offering their delivery man a cup of coffee. It was a small place but cute and the food was good. read more

The food is OK but the service is awful. I've eaten there twice and today was my first time dining in and my last. For starters the portions are small. I read reviews about how great the home fries are and wasn't impressed. Home fries require more than salt and pepper. Usually at a diner you can't finish your food but here I felt the need for more. The waitress wasn't attentive or friendly at all. I asked for a few napkins and was given 1. I asked for a refill on my coffee and literally waited 5 minutes before getting it! Also keep in my that it wasn't busy! By the time I actually received my coffee I was ready to leave. Hampden is a predominantly white area and it was clear that my presence wasn't wanted. YUCK! Came here on Saturday for breakfast/brunch with two friends. This place needs a serious upgrade/makeover. Now I get it... this isn't Miss Shirley's or some fancy place... its a quick, local dive with cheap greasy food. But for God's sake at least make it clean! We sat down and I immediately noticed the abundance of fruit flies.. I felt like I was sitting in a mud hut in Africa somewhere. The kind Asian waitress promptly came over to us (best part of the whole experience) and asked us what we wanted. I felt like just leaving at that point but the waitress was nice and the girl I was with insisted this place was "legit." So I stuck around.. As we rummaged through the menu deciding on what to consume, the waitress tells us they are practically out of everything but omelettes. When we asked her why, she said the owner/chef is terrible at restocking his own food. Well that's a great sign... I immediately thought to myself, if the owner can't even restock his own food, why does he own a restaurant? And how old is the food I'm about to eat?! I decided to play it safe and ordered the spanish omelette, which was eggs and onions topped with canned salsa. The hashbrowns were surprisingly good but overall I think they serve better omelettes in refugee camps. No seasoning, no substance, no care. I don't think my friends like their food at all either. One got a terrible looking frozen patty burger. The other got oatmeal that looked like the bonding adhesive for bricks. After sitting there for 30 minutes once we were done eating I decided to go to the bathroom and try to poop this stuff out of me. It didn't work but at least the bathroom was relatively clean. Thank God. I think the worst part of this experience was that I was siting at a table with at least half a dozen fruit flies swarming all around me. I felt itchy. On top of that was this horrendous smell of dirty mop water that still haunts me. When I finally left here I felt like I needed to burn my clothes and take a three hour shower. This may sound harsh but its "legit." What a shame because this dive has a great location. In the meantime they should change the name from The Lunch Box to The Dump Box. Maybe the lame ass hipsters would find it "cool and ironic." read more

When I got home I realized I was given two breakfast sandwiches in plain bagels. So my sister didn't get her food. I HATE having my order messed up like this. I enjoy diners so I figured I would give it a try for breakfast. Had their cb hash, 2 egg, & toast breakfast with ice tea. I thought the food was good, serving size just right (I don't need it huge, don't need leftovers). The staff was attentive and the food came quickly. It was a warm morning, I sort of wished I ate at a table instead of the counter due to the closeness to the grill. There is no AC, so on warm days be aware you might be uncomfortable. Prices were very reasonable. Not much attention is paid to the interior, to me it's a neighborhood diner look and feel. I don't need anything fancy, though my kids probably wouldn't have been happy if they accompanied me. I will return, while in town. read more

Mimi tries to serve everyone as fast as possible. It is a place where you can take your family for a nice meal. It is always clean and neat. The lunch box is what you would expect: a small, friendly diner with simple foods. The waitress was super friendly and taking care of everyone with a smile on her face. My partner got a cheeseburger and I got a turkey Reuben. Both foods were prepared nicely. If I'm around Hampden again and I want a quick, cheap bite, I'd definitely come here again. On a more personal level, I accidentally left my credit card there and they called my credit card company to get a hold of me. We had a late morning breakfast here on a weekend and the cuisine was very good. The menu was your average type breakfast menu with all the basic options. I had an omelet and it was very well prepared. The service was good and the Staff was very pleasant and congenial. Prices are very reasonable too. The only issue was the coffee. The perfect diner lunch in Hampden. With newspapers everywhere, the Young and Restless on the corner TV, and leftover Christmas decorations in late June, it felt like eating at the drugstore counter back in the 70s when I was a kid. A turkey club, stacked high with cripsy bacon and ripe tomatoes on toast. Golden, crispy diner fries. My lunch companions had the grilled cheese on rye ("the perfect amount of butter and cheese") and a chicken salad club ("so good, but so filling"). My club was $7. It was the most food for the money I've found for lunch on the Avenue. The one thing that differs from my childhood drugstore counter days: The place is run by a charmingly gracious Korean family. Which means that in addition to all-day breakfast and the usual diner sandwiches, Bool Gogi and Korean dumplings are on the menu. read more

The Lunch Box isn't a restaurant, or even a diner, it's a joint, so don't expect fancy hipster mimosas and brunch. And for little more than a McDonalds meal, it offers the best home cooked, stick-to-your-ribs breakfast around. I've been twice, and always order a bacon egg and cheese sandwich; the eggs were scrambled to fluffy perfection, the bacon was nice and crispy, and the buttered bread and cheese melted together deliciously. Unfriendly service. Instead of a greeting, the waitress just asked "what are you drinking?" Very few verbal pleasantries. I didn't feel welcome. The food wasn't bad but wasn't good. Eggs were made well. The French toast was a good texture but lacked flavor. I had to add cinnamon, and a little vanilla extract wouldn't have hurt in the batter. The food took a while to come out given that there were only a couple of people in there. Then, later that night I got a really upset stomach and broke out in sweats. I don't know for sure if it was due to the food here, but I highly doubt it was from food I had from a different (higher quality) restaurant later on. Kudos to The Lunch Box for offering affordable breakfast options, but major points taken away for poor customer service and under-seasoned food. My girlfriend, her nephew and I went to the Lunch Box on Sunday July 15 for a nice breakfast. My girlfriend and I thought it would be a good idea since we have had great service and awesome food in the past, but this time it was terrible. First, the order was wrong, the waitress got an attitude stating "it's written on the order, " even though all three of us witnessed what I had in fact ordered. The order was corrected so we ate, the food was okay. The worst part of the experience was we brought our own drinking cups filled with iced coffee and had it topped off with more. When we left, one cup was forgotten, so I ran back to get it. The table was cleared off so I had to ask the waitress about the cup. She said she threw it out. So I waited, hoping I could get it back, she never returned. My girlfriend came in to the place asking about the cup so I told her, she asked as well. The waitress said again she threw it and if you want it back you will haveto go into the garbage and get it yourself. Huh? What kind of place is this? The cup was return to us with a bad taste in our mouths about this once great place to eat. We will never return... maybe... well we are easy to forgive so we will one day go back. read more

Our hostess was accommodating in bringing sauces on the side rather than on the reuben sandwich. The meat was lean and on toast versus grilled which is good if you don't like greasy grilled sandwiches. The sandwiches do not come with any sides. Sodas and coffee only come with one refill. Unpretentious atmosphere and reasonable prices. We plan to come back next time we are in the area. read more
