Hey friends! I found this spot from TikTok! I immediately book marked it and made plans to come by! And I was not disappointed! Verdict: will be a regular here! Kay's Diner is a nostalgic, cozy Black-owned diner in Baltimore. As soon as I entered, I felt the love! The owner Kay and the manager Sheim are frequently walking around checking in on their guests. We sat next to a couple regulars who were known by the employees by name. It stands out a lot to me when a business has regulars that are treated like family. They offer counter-top seating as well as a few booths. The menu is extensive offering way more than classic diner breakfast, lunch & dinner. I ordered the French toast combo with a side of potatoes. It was a satisfying meal overall! Eggs were fried hard with cheese, potatoes were well seasoned, bacon was crispy! My only distaste is that they used regular bread rather than brioche for their French toast. The flavor on the French was amazing, it's topped with a cinnamon sugar butter. I washed everything down with an amazing Arnold Palmer. The Perfect balance of tea and lemonade. The coco bread was buttery and light, a delicious treat. My friend and I decided to share one their fresh pressed seamoss juices. It was good! -Customer service is amazing! Kicked off the first dining experience of the new year at Kay's! Nothing beats a good mom-and-pop shop. The vibes, the hospitality, the food-everything gave me that down-south, back-home feeling. Saw this on a best fish sandwich in Baltimore list and had to visit. Classic diner feel retro style inside. I loved it because I have a diner fetish. The staff is super pleasant and the vibes are awesome. The sandwich. I chose whiting and coco bread. Basic toppings. It is so good. I've been back twice now in the same week. Fries are standard . I did takeout but noticed counter bar and tables not cleaned. Took away one star for that. Other than that I would like to visit and dine in next time. I revisited Kay's Place recently when I was once again, craving some grits. We sat at the counter this time around. This place really hasn't changed a bit in the past 10ish years. We ordered a cheese omelette, a southwestern omelette, side of grits, side of homefries, and two sides of bacon. Unfortunately, our sides of bacon were forgotten. However, everything else was great and really hit the spot. The home fries were surprisingly delicious and the grits were just what I needed. The coffee was also surprisingly good. I would totally come back and just order sides. I can get by on bacon, grits, and home fries if they taste as good as Kay's. Don't expect anything fancy here but it's good diner food for a reasonable price. read more

Food looks good but the price I paid is very unreasonable to me and a little outrageous. It was my first time ordering and I've been wanted to try this place. But I can cook at home and save 30 for the quantity I received. I'm confused why I was charged 1.50 upcharge and was already charged a 1 for cheese. Yes prices are going and up things are getting pricey but 30 for one breakfast platter two other sides in regular sized bowls is crazy. Just dissatisfied with both the price and quantity! Formerly Wyman Park Restaurant (old neon sign is still in the window), Kay's Place seems like it's been a part of Remington for decades. If the adage is you get the most gossip or take on local issues at the barbershop--this is the diner version. The head cook (at least) cracks wise with the regulars and a chat with a fellow customer can shed light on his or her back story. But the ample breakfast and lunch are the draw. I had the veggie omelette with grits and some coffee. Great specials, including codfish cakes ("coddies" Baltimoreans usually call them), which I wish I'd had but just missed the last ones. The service was quick and friendly, the good was great. I didn't love the home fries, it seems like they might have added a curry to it that gave it an odd taste. My pork sausage breakfast sandwich was delicious, they offered butter and jelly which I thought would come on the side, but they actually put it on my sandwich and it was amazing. My friend's French toast was also solid, as was the sausage. Oddly there are no prices on the menu and we managed to rack up $40 for two people for breakfast (the receipt has the itemized break out, I followed the conventions used on the receipt: -Pork Sausage Breakfast Sandwich: 4.99 -w/Cheese: .99 - Home Fries x2*: 7.98 - French Toast Platter (2 eggs and sausage patties): 13.99 - Coffee: -small: 2.25 -small: 2.25 Sub total: 32.45 Taxes: 1.95 Total before tip: 34.40 *(they only served one order of home fries but after my friend tasted mine we didn't feel like inquiring after his and it wasn't till I got home and was able to review the receipt that we realized we'd been charged for it) It was a little pricey for diner food, but it's the first time I felt like I was in a real diner in Baltimore. I liked it way better than Pete's, a lot less angry energy and they actually had booths to sit in. They also take cards and don't have passive aggressive signs put up explaining how you have to pay their employees because their employer doesn't pay them enough. I imagine they set their prices to be able to avoid creating that unpleasant experience so I consider the trade off well worth it. Diner ish, quick serve breakfast type. I have been here twice back to back days this week, clearly i like it. It used to be the Wyman Park restaurant, but recently was remodeled and renamed by a new owner Mrs Carter. Looks brighter, service is friendly, food comes out pretty quickly, of course i order my food to go, and within ten minutes its done. I have ordered the big steak meal, steak that comes with scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes and toast. I have also ordered the french toast, that comes with scrambled eggs and your choice of meat. Its relatively inexpensive, and on the two occasions i went, a steady stream of customers were either dining in, or eating out. Of course i am going to go there again. Check them out. read more

I won't be going back to this place unfortunately, the customer service is hit and miss, mostly miss with certain people working. When I call my orders in, and pick up, they just never seem happy or properly greet me. Also, they never hand me my food in my hand, I pay for it, then this lady just looks at me like "you gonna take your food or not" it seems rude to me and that's my biggest issue. I tipped once, then never tipped again because of that, maybe that's why they treat me like that? IDK, I was a regular customer, but it seem like some of them treat others better when they come in, I can feel what people feel, and I don't feel welcome by this one lady in there. The food is not all that great either, or way too expensive. All I get is a breakfast sandwich because that is the only reasonable priced thing there, but that bacon they use is thick chewy and terrible, the home fries are not good at all either, it looks like they use red potatoes that were boiled, then burnt on the stove. The last straw was when the guy took my order over the phone today, then "forgot" to give it to the cook to make, I get there starving and have to wait 10-15 more minutes, being late for an appointment i had. I started not to come back and pay for it, but I'm not that guy. I do like only 2 people that work there, the good looking lady that cooks, and the nice young lady when she is there, but the main lady that never wanna hand me my food, the young guy with no manners, and the bad expensive food is why i will starve before I go back in there. I'm really tired of these places in Baltimore with poor customer service, attitudes, and just so unwelcoming, and I just let it slide and deal with it, I've been nothing but nice, polite and understanding. not no more, I'ma start reviewing every place I go now, to let people know my experience, maybe yours is better there, I'm not saying stay away, its just not for me. read more

Going to this place was the worst decision I've made in a long time. The food was WAY overpriced with small servings not well prepared. We were 4 people (2 adults, 2 kids) each ordering simple meals and our order came to over $85. There are no prices on the menu. Ask how much things cost before ordering!!!!!! $35 for a catfish meal - 3 very small pieces of catfish & boutique size sides without the boutique flavor.. Literally the rice came in a container the size of a mouthwash cup. My son said he enjoyed the fish but that was it and no one enjoyed anything else! How can you ruin French toast??! I always tip +20% but I couldn't today because wtf!!!!?! For the amount I spent, we could've eaten somewhere nice and had good food The server was kind and polite but she didn't ask us how the food was, see if we needed refills, wasn't around when it was time for us to pay. I sat for a bit to look at the menu as it was my first time there. I wasn't acknowledged, so I waited for a bit. I place my order for dine in, but I noticed that some time went by and my order wasn't started yet, so I kindly asked to switch it for to go. They said "sure no problem". I'm still sitting in the same spot, at this point it's about 12:45pm (I arrived at 12:05). I ordered the short stack platter with a side of home fries. The pancakes tasted grainy and undercooked in the middle as it was very doughy to the bite. The turkey sausage tasted like something from the frozen aisle in your local grocery story, almost like the microwaveable Jimmy Dean sausages, eggs were okay, and home fries were had some big chunks of potatoes, some were cooked well, while others could've been cooked a little longer. I waited even longer because nobody notified me when my food was ready. I was still in the same spot that I sat in when I arrived. Quite frankly, I could've made this at my home in 20 mins. It wasn't worth the wait and it definitely wasn't worth the price. As a new customer, there was a great opportunity lost on their behalf. I know I'm only one person, but I'm big on customer service. As much as I love to support black owner business today just want the day. My first time eating here. I ordered pancakes, eggs and turkey sausage. My pancakes were very hard, my eyes were not scrambled but rather fried hard. Maybe I'll try again with late lunch food. My server didn't have a smile. I'm all for good customer service. I have been coming to Kay's Diner for awhile now, when it was under different ownership. The vintage feel is nostalgic. The service is generally very good. I especially love Daphane! She always goes above and beyond and always greets you with a smile. She is a shining example of great customer service. The food is good as well. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the home fries. It's a menu item that is a carry over from the former diner. They don't taste fresh. I understand that due to the high volume of customers it is more efficient to prepare homefries ahead of time. However, cold potatoes that sit for awhile are never good. But, I just deal with it because I enjoy everything else, from breakfast to dinner. You have to try the Mac and cheese, greens, and sweet potatoes! Yum! Wish I could actually give it 4.5 stars! I love that Ms. Carter revived this place. The signs are cleaned up and she added some TVs and a little more to the menu. The staff are amazing and it's still perfect breakfast counter diner food with the same stools and booths. This morning i got a sandwich with Turkey bacon, egg and cheese on rye with home fries and a coffee. I realized I forgot my wallet before my order was up. The waitress (who's been here for at least 10+ years that I've been coming here) insisted I stay and wait for the food to be ready before I went home to get my wallet and return to pay. Absolutely beautiful vibes upon entrance, everyone smiling! It is a self seated place, as you walk in you're greeted and allowed to sit where any space is open (booth and stool dining options available). Menus are already on the table (also options for QR scan to access menu). My waitress came right over and greeted me. I chose a breakfast platter with French toast, scrambled eggs, grits and bacon with a side of OJ. IT WAS JUST LIKE GRANNY'S COOKING! Having awesome customer service from Ms. Jen accompanied with the delicious food was an absolute plus! Plastic wear is an available option if you wish not to use silverware. Kay's Place is clean, the prices are well beyond reasonable (especially for the amount of food you receive) and it is simply a pure classic &Baltimore's well kept secret that needs to be more widely known!
