Tasty rolls from this neighborhood gem. These days I usually grab to go but I have not been disappointed with my food. 3 rolls seems to be the right amount for my partner and I to share. The food is also well packaged for takeaway. Stop in and check them out or order on their Toast.
Ordered takeout and got the basic rolls. The pickup was easy (always is) and the staff are quick and nice. My go to sushi spot in Baltimore!
Boooy did we underestimate the portion sizes of their sushi special rolls. A friend was visiting from out of town and we wanted to get sushi. Shoyou seemed to have good reviews so we walked in without reservations. Looking at the menu we thought oh the three of us can easily demolish 2 regular maki rolls and maybe 3 special rolls. Nope. We had so much leftovers! And everything tasted so good! Its aptly priced. If you are getting a special roll it will be at least 4 to 8 pieces depending on what you get. My favorite of the special rolls was actually the spider roll which was made with softshell crab(and not pictured as it was promptly devoured) Would recommend if you're in the Baltimore area and want to support a local restaurant in a nice neighborhood. Don't fall for Azumi hype when places like this exist.
Shoyu Sushi absolutely deserves all five stars. The customer service was incredibly kind and prompt, and I loved that they offered me a complimentary piece of sushi. I also noticed they did the same for other tables, which really shows how much they care about the experience. I ordered four pieces in order from left to right: the maguro, albacore, sea bream, and toro. The maguro truly melted in my mouth. The albacore was delicious with a surprisingly generous portion. The sea bream was probably my least favorite of the lineup but still very good. The toro was easily my personal favorite, and I could have eaten 100 of those. Each order comes with two pieces which made trying different options even better. I also got the baked mussels and wowowowow they were so good. I genuinely wanted to order another round but I was already full. This is the closest spot I have found to an omakase style experience without actually doing a full omakase. It has more flavor, great presentation, and a little extra dazzle instead of just plain fish on rice. The only downside was that parking was a bit tough, but it was absolutely worth it for the quality of the meal. Highly recommend!

I was craving sushi. So I did the ultimate Yelp search and this was a fair game choice that did not disappoint. Its a quaint and reasonably medium sized restaurant on Fort and Light St. Parking is not easy as its amongst residential community. When I entered I was told to choose an open table. There were a few so we were able to select a decent seat. Its clean and the service was great. We ordered the tasty Vegetable tempura, california tempura, baked Spicy scallop, and Spicy Fried Salmon Tempura with mixed california. I chose the Snow Beauty Saki. I was making a new choice as I never tried Saki and based off my taste experience it was not a choice that was tasty. With the service and the over all taste I enjoyed my food and will return. If you are lucky to grab parking and it is not crowded while in the area, make this your selection for Sushi or any of the Japanse dish that is served here.
The food is amazing nice serving size, the sushi is fresh, full and filling. The service was amazing, the waitress was very intuitive and knowledgeable. The ambiance reminds of an out of state little city sushi bar. The rice wine I had was so amazing, it wasn't too sweet or bitter and it went amazing with the cucumber salad.

Sushi Bruce was in house and it was great to see him in action making our order. He's splitting time between this place and the location in fells point so it was great to see the guy. Always so welcoming and friendly and makes the best sushi. Got a bunch of nigiri which was delicious, good cuts of fish and delicious rice, and got a crunchy shrimp roll which was huge and a spicy tuna roll a staple go to old reliable. Don't come here as often as I used to after moving but really glad the quality of sushi and service here hasn't changed at all. It is still the best sushi spot in Baltimore and Maryland in my book. I would totally recommend and will definitely be back.
Was not made aware by waitress that there would be a $7 additional charge for substituting salmon for tuna on the burrito. The salmon was such a skimp amount, didn't even fill the entire burrito. After the bill came, I told the waitress that we were not made aware about the additional charge beforehand and she spoke to the owner. Owner not willing to take initiative to remove the up charge. Talk to your employees so they make the customer aware about the additional charge!! This is ridiculous

The wait was not long before we received beautifully presented rolls that tasted out of this world. I would highly recommend this place. I found the prices to be fair as well.
So I used to go to Shoyou a lot in the last few years and really enjoyed my experience and the food. Sadly, the last time I went, things seem to have changed. All our rolls kept falling apart and felt like they were loosely made. Maybe because it was a busy Friday evening? The edamame and sauce are so excellent, but much to my dismay, the waiter kept trying to take the sauce away even though I said I wanted to keep it for my rolls (which I have been doing here for years!) I just wish things didn't have to change so much! Overall tho, the service is still good, I just feel like the vibe has changed over time.
I ordered pick up so may be that their food tastes different in house, but I felt their rolls to be too dense. They put a lot of imitation crab in the rolls (and don't say that on their descriptions) so it really takes away from any possible crunch that a roll could have. Imitation crab is fine but it's an overkill here. For the price, the rolls are quite big and have a moderate amount of rice. Would maybe go in store to try it for real, but wouldn't be ordering pickup again since they don't do delivery.

Yes, it's in Fed Hill. Yes, parking can be tough. Yes, it's Baltimore city. What did you expect? I've actually always gotten lucky with a parking spot nearby. I've never had to wait for a table either. This past visit, we sat near the sushi bar area which was fun to watch the chefs work their magic. The table was quite sticky when we sat down but our server was really sweet and attentive and wiped it down for us as soon as I mentioned it. I know people are hyped over the specialty rolls here but being gluten free, I'm really limited with what I can have. I will also say that I personally think specialty rolls and cooked sushi is overrated. Why eat sushi if you can't taste the amazing flavors of the fish? We ordered a few rounds of salmon nigiri, fatty tuna nigiri, salmon sashimi, and a yellowtail maki roll. That fatty tuna is out of this world. And the sashimi? Delightful. The presentation is stunning and I love all the dishware here. I also love that they gave us some extra pieces of sashimi on our nigiri plate. So thoughtful! The sake selection could use some work but it's okay. I will totally be back for more when that next sushi craving hits.

I came here after walking by a few times and didn't realize what I was in for! The restaurant itself is small, but I went for a late lunch around 2pm so didn't have any trouble getting a table. The menu has quite the variety and so many unique options (baked sushi?!). I got the Hawaiian Poke Sushi bowl and the Baked Scallop California roll to share. I'm used to being disappointed by the portions of poke bowls at sit-down restaurants, but this bowl did not disappoint. The bowl had a generous portion of tuna and everything was so fresh. For the scallop roll, there was a large baked scallop on each piece of sushi. I thought having something warm on sushi might be odd, but it was delicious! I'm still thinking about this meal and need to go back soon! read more

Carrie is the best server! This diva is the sweetest! She's quite literally the only server present and is doing amazing. The ambiance is cute and cozy, but a bit stuffy, the person behind me kept hitting my chair lol. The food was mid. I would say I'm a pretty avid sushi eater, this place tries their best, but misses the mark. I enjoyed their appetizers, but actual sushi was bad. The rice is a bit undercooked and has an extra soft texture. It feels a bit too mushy, which feels unnatural. My friend ordered the avocado roll and that was not tasty at all. We asked if we can get it wrote off the bill or returned, but they said "no refund or exchanges!" lol. So we had to take this massive L for the mediocre sushi. **awesome, high quality sushi! Creative rolls I really like this place! I've gone a couple of times, and been impressed every time. I personally like the rolls the most. The soft-shell crab one was super creative and had amazing textures! I also like the baked dragon roll (with eel). They're usually pretty generous with the fish! The garnishing also makes everything so beautiful. Parking can be tricky since it's in Fed Hill. Street parking is generally free, if you can find a spot! The staff is always very friendly and quick with their service! I've always been seated very fast. The restaurant is pretty small and cozy. read more
Shoyou has quickly become my favorite sushi spot in Baltimore. I've been three times in the last two months and it has never disappointed. I've been lucky with street parking, but I have also gone on weekdays of off peak hours. It's a small space, but I haven't had to wait. Service is good but a little slow. On Sundays there is no service and no alcohol sale so you order with a QR code, but someone still brings you the food. Just make sure to tip before the app closes your tab (despite me telling it to keep it open). Foodwise, I have ordered the Japanese Burrito EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. and it's been delicious every time. It comes with a sweet mayo based sauce but I would love some sort of spice element. Maybe some chopped jalapenos to complement the tuna? Still a delicious burrito, though. I've also gotten uni every time and it's pricey, but very fresh and creamy. All of their nigiri are fresh, yummy, and every bite has been good. I've also tried a few rolls like the spicy tuna and again, a hit. You also can't go wrong with any of the baked volcano rolls. If you want sushi, go here. If not, go and at least try the burrito once! read more
I came to eat here for a Friday date night with my lovely girlfriend. The vibes were at an all time high and the service was fantastic. We ordered garlic edamame, shumai, and fatty tuna to start. The tuna was melt in your mouth delicious and the shumai were like little burst of glorious flavor. I ordered my favorite roll on the menu, the baked scallop California roll. This roll seems to get better each time I order it. Truly exquisite. read more
Ordered takeout, which came in cute paper/plastic boxes with ginger and wasabi on the side. + Salmon Sashimi ($14 for 5 slices): over daikon, decent cuts, very tender (8/10) + Sea Bream Sashimi ($14 for 6 slices): thin slices with radish, micro green, and sriracha. Super thin so didn't really taste the fish and the sriracha stood out (7/10) + How Dare Unagi (eel) Roll ($26 for 8 pieces): quite pricy, but was a specialty roll with a whole eel filet on top. The best quality Sushi in Baltimore. They also serve a wonderful vegetable tempura. I love their yellow fin tuna maki and the rolls are scrumptious. Great for a date or for takeout. The decor and staff are pleasant and inviting. read more
My Yelp Elite bestie took me here and it was INCREDIBLE! It had been in her Baltimore collection for some time because she had heard so many great things about it. All the great things you hear are correct. This place is so yummy. There was only one server when we went so getting his attention was tough at times, but he was a great server overall. There was a lot of seating inside too. Here is what we ordered: Gyoza: I'm drooling writing about these. These lightly fried pork dumplings were divine. They had a great crunch and were perfectly juicy. Baked Scallop California Roll: My friend ordered this and adored all the ingredients. The mushroom with the scallops were a wonderful combo for her. Black Dragon Roll: I loved all the flavor in my roll. The crab they use in this is so meaty and yummy. They eel and avocado combo is just what I was looking for. I highly recommend ordering this roll. Salmon nigiri: The quality of the fish they use here is amazing. The salmon was fatty and lump. They gave me not only two nigiris, but a few extra slices of salmon on the side. It had a hint of lemon which added to the flavors. I cannot emphasize enough how delicious everything was. I'm excited to go back for more next time I'm in Baltimore. read more

Still good! Why is it that Shoyou is one of the only spots in the area with a delicious sushi burrito? In addition to the taste, the pricing is adequate to the portion you receive. I'll always come back for it! Also on this visit I had the garlic edamame. Always savory, a lil sweet and yummy. This time they were packaged in a travel proof container. ~ Your boy does not give out 5 stars so easily, but they deserve it. Everything I expected to be after reading comments and looking at some pictures. After leaving here, my heart, mind & stomach all agreed that is my #1 sushi spot in Baltimore. The service was great! I arrived at 11am or so and was greeted by a wonderful host. She was familiar with their menu, made great suggestions & and was always on time when I needed something. Kudos to her. Started with the Baked Mussels on the Half Shell and they were stunning !!! They are a must! You will never forget this taste. The juice was even amazing. 10/10. "The Baked Scallop California Roll " was good. First time trying scallops in my sushi. Just didn't like having hot scallops inside a cool roll. Threw me off just a little. 7/10. "The Sun-Kissed Roll" & " The Rainbow Special Roll" were my favorites. Absolutely fresh & smooth! I was in heaven !! 10/10. I also got the "Hot Night Baby! " which wasn't bad, but at this point, I was stuffed. Took that to go. 7/10 While crushing, I had a bottle of Clean Slate (white wine). I think I paid around $120.00 for everything. Well worth it. This place was clean and cozy, & the temperature was great. Food: All of the specialty rolls have crab salad in them. I'm not a fan of mayo in my sushi... so It's a little disappointing. On the bright side, the Salmon Sake and Freshwater Eel Nigiri are delicious! The ratio or rice to fish and the seasoning is perfect. I also tried the shrimp dumplings and a regular roll of spicy salmon. Everything I ate was delightful and brought a smile to my face. I understand why this place is a local favorite. Service: Outstanding! Our server recommended the Fuji apple sake and I'm glad we took his advice. It complements the sushi perfectly. After finishing my meal it's also palate cleanser. Ambiance: It's a small and intimate atmosphere. The space is modern with a hint of traditional Japanese decor. This is a great spot for a date night. But large groups need to make a reservation in advance. I'll be back! read more

Another absolutely fabulous meal at Sho You. My wife and I just kept asking ourselves how it is possible that Bruce gets fish that is so much better than any other sushi place in the city. Is it his eye for certain cuts? His knowledge of certain markets? I don't know, but time and again his nigiri just melts in your mouth. And while they have raised their prices some, it's still very reasonable. Check out the poke tuna salad, the Japanese burrito, and literally any of the nigiri. If they have Toro, get it. It is like butter. Can't wait to go back! read more
Shoyou is a nice little gem that my friend and I found in Fed Hill. It's not the biggest restaurant, but it's cozy with a slight buzz of patrons coming in to dine or slipping in to pick up carry out orders. The restaurant is split with dining areas on both sides and the sushi bar/kitchen on the other side. They have a very extensive saki selection! We didn't order any, but we noted a few to try on our next visit. For our appetizer, we had the ginger soy edamame. They were so flavorful, I can still taste them! For our mains, we started with old reliable- The California roll. It was so FRESH! One of the best I've had, to be quite honest. My friend ordered the 'Sure Thing' roll. It was spicy salmon, shrimp tempura, avocado, and masago. It was my friend's first time eating raw fish, and she loved it! It was again, extremely fresh and delicious. I ordered the 'Sweet Honey Roll'. It included shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, and masago. That was extremely, amazingly, top notch tasty!!! The tempura flakes were a perfect touch to the cool and slight sweetness of the crab mix and shrimp tempura. When I go back, I'm getting that roll again, for sure. The prices were pretty affordable, if you factor in the location of the restaurant. I will absolutely travel from my side of town to try them out again! I came back again to try some more nigiri. The ootoro, akami, yellowtail, and uni were delicious. The menu says it is murasaki uni but the color was close to that of bafun uni, which I like. It was creamy and sweet. I like the chef's nigiri so much! The house salad was fresh and I like the texture of shredded daikon. I was curious about the spider roll, which is not seen in Japan. There was a jumbo soft shell crab tempura and kanikama in the roll. Personally, I prefer classical nigiri and maki but it was interesting to see that sushi has evolved into such rolls, which seems to reflect people's preference in the country. Their service is great and I will definitely come back again! read more
My first time hearing about this spot. My friend and I stopped by here on a Sunday evening. We were immediately seated. I ordered my basic crunchy shrimp tempura. It was so fresh! My friend ordered the dumplings and my fav was her crab salad. It was like a sushi roll salad. I want to definitely come back here again to try almost everything on the menu. Very small, cute place they do not sell alcohol on Sundays. That was the only disappointment. read more

They just moved to a new larger location and I think they are still getting things figured out! I am sure it will be back up and running at full speed soon!
A TV in the sushi bar? Bad form. If I walked in and saw that I'd turn and walk right back out. Is that there permanently?
