Boooy did we underestimate the portion sizes of their sushi special rolls. A friend was visiting from out of town and we wanted to get sushi. Shoyou seemed to have good reviews so we walked in without reservations. Looking at the menu we thought oh the three of us can easily demolish 2 regular maki rolls and maybe 3 special rolls. Nope. We had so much leftovers! And everything tasted so good! Its aptly priced. If you are getting a special roll it will be at least 4 to 8 pieces depending on what you get. My favorite of the special rolls was actually the spider roll which was made with softshell crab(and not pictured as it was promptly devoured) Would recommend if you're in the Baltimore area and want to support a local restaurant in a nice neighborhood. Don't fall for Azumi hype when places like this exist. read more

Shoyu Sushi absolutely deserves all five stars. The customer service was incredibly kind and prompt, and I loved that they offered me a complimentary piece of sushi. I also noticed they did the same for other tables, which really shows how much they care about the experience. I ordered four pieces in order from left to right: the maguro, albacore, sea bream, and toro. The maguro truly melted in my mouth. The albacore was delicious with a surprisingly generous portion. The sea bream was probably my least favorite of the lineup but still very good. The toro was easily my personal favorite, and I could have eaten 100 of those. Each order comes with two pieces which made trying different options even better. I also got the baked mussels and wowowowow they were so good. I genuinely wanted to order another round but I was already full. This is the closest spot I have found to an omakase style experience without actually doing a full omakase. It has more flavor, great presentation, and a little extra dazzle instead of just plain fish on rice. The only downside was that parking was a bit tough, but it was absolutely worth it for the quality of the meal. Highly recommend! read more

Service here was attentive and fast as usual on a quiet afternoon. Chill vibes and decent Spotify playlist on lol. Put in my order for drinks and sushi quickly. Sushi Bruce was in house and it was great to see him in action making our order. He's splitting time between this place and the location in fells point so it was great to see the guy. Always so welcoming and friendly and makes the best sushi. Got a bunch of nigiri which was delicious, good cuts of fish and delicious rice, and got a crunchy shrimp roll which was huge and a spicy tuna roll a staple go to old reliable. Don't come here as often as I used to after moving but really glad the quality of sushi and service here hasn't changed at all. It is still the best sushi spot in Baltimore and Maryland in my book. I was craving sushi. So I did the ultimate Yelp search and this was a fair game choice that did not disappoint. Its a quaint and reasonably medium sized restaurant on Fort and Light St. Parking is not easy as its amongst residential community. When I entered I was told to choose an open table. There were a few so we were able to select a decent seat. Its clean and the service was great. We ordered the tasty Vegetable tempura, california tempura, baked Spicy scallop, and Spicy Fried Salmon Tempura with mixed california. I chose the Snow Beauty Saki. I was making a new choice as I never tried Saki and based off my taste experience it was not a choice that was tasty. With the service and the over all taste I enjoyed my food and will return. So I used to go to Shoyou a lot in the last few years and really enjoyed my experience and the food. Sadly, the last time I went, things seem to have changed. All our rolls kept falling apart and felt like they were loosely made. Maybe because it was a busy Friday evening? The edamame and sauce are so excellent, but much to my dismay, the waiter kept trying to take the sauce away even though I said I wanted to keep it for my rolls (which I have been doing here for years!) The table was quite sticky when we sat down but our server was really sweet and attentive and wiped it down for us as soon as I mentioned it. I know people are hyped over the specialty rolls here but being gluten free, I'm really limited with what I can have. I will also say that I personally think specialty rolls and cooked sushi is overrated. Why eat sushi if you can't taste the amazing flavors of the fish? We ordered a few rounds of salmon nigiri, fatty tuna nigiri, salmon sashimi, and a yellowtail maki roll. That fatty tuna is out of this world. And the sashimi? Delightful. The presentation is stunning and I love all the dishware here. I also love that they gave us some extra pieces of sashimi on our nigiri plate. So thoughtful! Shoyou has quickly become my favorite sushi spot in Baltimore. I've been three times in the last two months and it has never disappointed. I've been lucky with street parking, but I have also gone on weekdays of off peak hours. It's a small space, but I haven't had to wait. Service is good but a little slow. On Sundays there is no service and no alcohol sale so you order with a QR code, but someone still brings you the food. Just make sure to tip before the app closes your tab (despite me telling it to keep it open). Foodwise, I have ordered the Japanese Burrito EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. and it's been delicious every time. It comes with a sweet mayo based sauce but I would love some sort of spice element. Maybe some chopped jalapenos to complement the tuna? Still a delicious burrito, though. I've also gotten uni every time and it's pricey, but very fresh and creamy. All of their nigiri are fresh, yummy, and every bite has been good. This place is ridiculous. My sister in law went to check in for our party of eleven. Off the bat, they said they could not and would not serve us. Why? Because each table only seats four. We then asked if we could just be separated. Again, they would not do it. I get they were busy in there. But we were willing to wait. Black Dragon Roll: I loved all the flavor in my roll. The crab they use in this is so meaty and yummy. They eel and avocado combo is just what I was looking for. On the bright side, the Salmon Sake and Freshwater Eel Nigiri are delicious! The ratio or rice to fish and the seasoning is perfect. Shoyou is a nice little gem that my friend and I found in Fed Hill. We didn't order any, but we noted a few to try on our next visit. For our appetizer, we had the ginger soy edamame. They were so flavorful, I can still taste them! For our mains, we started with old reliable- The California roll. It was so FRESH! One of the best I've had, to be quite honest. My friend ordered the 'Sure Thing' roll. It was spicy salmon, shrimp tempura, avocado, and masago. It was my friend's first time eating raw fish, and she loved it! It was again, extremely fresh and delicious. I ordered the 'Sweet Honey Roll'. It included shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, and masago. That was extremely, amazingly, top notch tasty!!! The tempura flakes were a perfect touch to the cool and slight sweetness of the crab mix and shrimp tempura. When I go back, I'm getting that roll again, for sure. I came back again to try some more nigiri. The ootoro, akami, yellowtail, and uni were delicious. The menu says it is murasaki uni but the color was close to that of bafun uni, which I like. It was creamy and sweet. I like the chef's nigiri so much! The house salad was fresh and I like the texture of shredded daikon. I was curious about the spider roll, which is not seen in Japan. There was a jumbo soft shell crab tempura and kanikama in the roll. Personally, I prefer classical nigiri and maki but it was interesting to see that sushi has evolved into such rolls, which seems to reflect people's preference in the country. Went there last night. Randomly. No reservations. They only take walkins and it's a very small small restaurant. Probably seats up to 40-50 people max maybe less but I was not counting. the food was absolutely phenomenal. I'd eat the sushi every day if I could. There was however only 3 staff members tending to everyone at any given moment. If they had one more server it likely would've cut the wait time down in half. But even the wait time wasn't terrible. I've had worse experiences. The food certainly made up for any "bad" or subpar service. Again the service was great we just had some longer wait times but not longer to be totally alarmed by. This 5 star spot immediately went on my food Instagram @AmandaTheEpicure because of how delcious it is! I had been wanting to try Shoyou for a long time. Everyone told me this was the best sushi in Baltimore and I definitely agree! The rolls are creative and we liked both rolls we ordered. One was a crab roll with eel on top and one was a roll with scallops and seaweed salad on top. The presentation was beautiful for both. More importantly, they were delcious! As someone who is new to the sushi scene, I had to try out this place, as I've heard that it is some of the best sushi in the city. Situated on a street corner with seating facing the window, we decided to come here for a casual dinner and take advantage of the seating that is perfect for people watching. Onto the food! So I had to start with the classic Seaweed salad, as I find it to be a refreshing appetizer. The portion was fairly generous, and the seaweed was sweet and tangy with the perfect texture. For the sushi, we decided to go wild and try a bunch of different unique rolls that we've never had before. We ordered the Salmon Tempura Roll, the Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll, the Sure Thing, and the Firecracker. The Salmon Tempura Roll had so much meat in it and the salmon was fried to perfection, and the sauces drizzled on top were yummy and paired perfectly with the roll. The Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll also was packed with meat and flavor. The Sure Thing was pretty spicy from the jalapeños, but still was super delicious. Lastly, the Firecracker was a great texture combination between the crunchy tempura flakes and wonton chips with the creamy sauces, avocado, and tuna. For all of these rolls, the ingredients were all fresh and created a powerful flavor and texture combination. These special rolls are also thick and the portions are HUGE, so after ordering with our eyes, and not our stomachs, we had a lot of leftovers.
