I feel silly that I ignored this place for so long - I'd been following The Stache since pre-covid, so when I saw they'd opened a restaurant next door, given the timing (right when the covid lockdowns started requiring bars to serve food in order to serve to-go cocktails or beer), it seemed (incorrectly) clear they'd only opened a "restaurant" to satisfy that requirement, like I'd seen other bars do around that time. So while I knew they were selling super-cheap burgers and hot dogs through quarantine, I completely missed that this actually was a legitimate burger spot in its own right. Thankfully, I started hearing more and more buzz about it, and finally got around to checking it out a few weeks ago... now I have a new life goal: try every burger on their menu (they all look amazing!) So yeah. Since the first time I was here, about a month ago, I've been back three times, to try three of their burgers so far. Though I say I've been "here" - technically I've never actually stepped foot *in* Sideburns, I'm always at The Stache - since their beer and cocktails are always solid, so that's still *half* the draw, having great beverage options to go with it. Same building, though, just two entrances. (You can sit at the bar, and order food items and beverages on the same check.) So far, I've tried the "The Works" (with fried mushrooms), the "Don Chendo" (with salsa and cilantro, and served on a jalepeño-cheddar bun), and just this weekend, was back to try the "Backyard Barbeque" (with bbq sauce, chipotle mayo, and one HUGE onion ring). All three of them were equally great in their own way - and these days, $10 is a pretty great price for such inventive, high quality, and importantly, *huge* burgers. I also love that you can add a half-order of fries for only $2, which I've never not done - their half order is a pretty substantial amount of fries for one person, and their fries are quality too. (Especially now that I noticed, the most recent time, that some of their starters come with jalapeno ranch - which you can, and definitely should, ask for a side of with said fries. Delicious!) I can't speak to service if it's busy, though - I've always gotten my order in basically *exactly* as long as it would take to properly cook a burger (seriously, it's been consistently super quick), but I've also only ever been there for lunch (I definitely get the impression it gets a lot busier later in the day.) read more

Had the mushroom/swiss smash burger. My only criticism is I walk in with three employees walking around and no one recognized me until the bartender next door came in to take my order. While they aren't perfect, they are very very good and you don't have to spend $15+ to find out. (My burger had blue cheese, bacon, an egg, a brioche bun and who knew arugula would be so good on a burger. Perhaps I'll try a double patty next time because the meat is thin. Buttermilk fried chicken sandwich was equally as good and actually is a good portion. French fries are plentiful, the right cut, and just crispy enough. As an early supporter of this friendly establishment, I've enjoyed seeing it grow, thrive and gain great favor during these past difficult years. They can make an excellent burger as they did last evening with bf's Don Chendo burger. But glitches do occur with takeout with some regularity. I can understand where a misunderstanding could have occurred while ordering via phone. Asking for a plain burger rather than correctly describing a Smash Burger was mostly my error. I don't blame them, but the end product, while not including onions and sauce, should be edible. This was not (don't worry, it didn't go to waste). The patty was the driest, flavorless cottony object that I've encountered. How can two products be in the same bag coming from the same kitchen yet demonstrate such divergent quality? Four stars because they can do a good job but I wish for consistency. They need find a way to employ a quality control standard. read more

Growing up in Chicagoland, then living most of our adult life in Wisconsin, my wife and I have been looking for a good Italian Beef sandwich in the Los Angeles area for the past five years. Luckily, Portillos delivers on that, but we think we found a far closer alternative..and we weren't even looking! Sideburns serves poutine, and appeared on my Yelp feed, so we went specifically for that. (I think a lot of things taste just better with brown gravy which is why I love loco-moco so much). The restaurant is so close (located just east of DTLB), but is continuing to be a wet/rainy New Years Eve, so took the car. Parking is a bit of a headache, non-metered street parking that allows overnight so pretty full all the time even though the area was pretty dead...just need to keep looking. You order and pay upfront, and then sit. They will bring the food to you, and then you self-bus. There are a few fast-food type booths. I didn't see any fountain drinks, but there were bottles of Mexican coke and Jarritos in a side refrigerator. We might have been the first customers of the day (they open at 12 and we arrived around 12:40). The plan was to order a Chicago dog and a 'The Works' burger and some poutine, but noticed a handwritten sign advertising a Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich, so had to try that instead of the burger. The manager on duty was super friendly, and struck up a conversation as he delivered the food (as well as coming back once we were finishing to get what we thought of the meal). He told us the owner really likes midwestern type food, which is why there are things like Chicago dog, Italian beef, beer brats, and cheese curds on the menu. He was super proud of their burgers (which aligns with the reviews here). One of the things I noticed about the menu is how many of the items (except for the burgers) didn't really have complementary items...it's not like you can use the hot dogs for the Chicago dog for other non-hot dog dishes, or use the italian beef for something else. And some of the midwestern specific items are probably hard to source in an affordable manner. Thus some compromises needed to be made. Italian Beef (Off menu special: $12) - It used a bolillio shaped brioche bread, nicely toasted (different than the Torano italian bread found in Chicago). The beef and gravy tasted exactly as expected (thinking it was already sourced prepared and just reheated)...beef was super thin, and a generous amount of giardiniera topped it. It was a good, satisfying sandwich. Chicago Dog ($9) - Had all the necessary ingredients down to the neon green relish and celery salt. It did use the same bolillio bread (instead of a poppy seed), and a Nathan all-beef (instead of Vienna). It was definitely dragged through the garden, and delicious (filled me up). Poutine ($10) - This came out a bit early, right after it had been expertly prepared. It used a generous amount of fresh Wisconsin cheese curds (not the frozen battered deep fried that I've seen others use). Thus, the hot gravy melted the cheese flat, and made it so melty and stringey. The fries were deep fried perfectly, just before it was assembled. It was the perfect amount for the two of us, and we scarfed it down with forks (too messy for fingers and MUST be eaten soon after it is prepared...not good for delivery I would guess). Definitely in the category of 'must-tell-others' right away. We love how Sideburns serves midwestern food and how it is prepared with a lot of care (instead of just slapping it together), and will need to try their cheeseburger, brats, and deep-fried cheese curds next time. I legit don't go to other burger places because this one is so close and also SO GOOD. Good on them for making the vegan options nearly the same price as regular options. (It used to be the same but inflation I assume) I almost always get the vegan works burger with tots. The tots are legit some of the best I've ever had. How do they get them so crispy?? Everything here is amazing. I've had about half the items on the menu to date, and the only single gripe I have is that they only serve bread and butter pickles, even on the Nashville chicken. Menu said caramelized onions...maybe there were 3 bits (not bites,) of cooked onion. Said Swiss and mushrooms, again barely visible. There was vegan cheddar, which didn't belong on this order. Found this place last minute on a whim after drinks out with the girls and I am SO GLAD I DID!! Ryan was so amazing and helpful as it was my first time there, and he actually tried to help me (a very indecisive person) decide on what to order which was so so kind of him. Most places I go to it's very obvious that whoever is taking my order doesn't care and rarely offers actual helpful guidance around the menu. And the FOODDD. I got the vegan mushroom burger and the bites + fries. When I say this is the best post-night out meal I've had in YEARS... I've been trying to eat less meat and have been missing out on the occasional burger here and there but their vegan burger seriously went above and beyond all expectations. Even my boyfriend who tried it was amazed and said he wouldn't be able to tell it was vegan if I didn't tell him. All I can say is, I'm definitely coming back. Sideburns is bookmarked. Need to try their vegan breakfast burrito next. Special shout out to Ryan for being the best customer service experience I've had probably since before Covid. I've been here a number of times, and the burgers are always fantastic! My personal favorite is the BBQ Burger--though I can't remember the official name. I love that they let you customize your burger exactly how you want it, and everything is always freshly cooked and served hot. The menu has a great variety of toppings and combinations, especially for the vegan options. Service can be a bit slow when ordering; it seems like the cashier might be managing both the restaurant counter and the bar. My only complaint is about the pickles in the burger. They weren't pickled enough and tasted like cucumber and I hate that. This place is much preferred during the nightlife, especially when having drinks in their connected bar next door, the Stache. My first time here was during the day when I ordered a mushroom Swiss sandwich as well as their chili cheese fries. I brought two others who both ordered the buttermilk chicken sandwich. The swish mushroom burger was a buttery and cheesy bite, with a delicate umami flavor coating the mouth followed by the gentle Swiss cheese taste. Those simple ingredients made for an easy to eat burger that melted in my mouth. The chili cheese fries was good for the first few bites, however the beans overpowered the taste of the cheese and chili, as well as being unseasoned it made the fries taste starchy. The ones I brought who enjoyed the chicken sandwiches said it had a good flavor and was a good portion of chicken within the sandwich. Another time I came was more recently with some other friends who enjoyed their meals and will come back to eat here whenever they are near. They were impressed by the quality and balance of each of their burgers. This time I had a vegan smash burger which was surprisingly light for a burger. The patty tasted incredible, better than an actual beef patty. Due to the substitution of a vegan patty, the sauce had no fat to cut through so the sharp tanginess was more pronounced. No part of the burger was overwhelming and complemented each other respectively. However, upon further reflection, it is possible that my positive opinion was influenced by hunger. The quality of the burger has deteriorated, with the meat tasting like frostbite. The smash hamburger caused me to become ill, resulting in diarrhea and a stomach virus. This could be due to the patty not being cooked thoroughly or possibly being contaminated. Such a situation is completely unacceptable, and I believe it is necessary to notify the health department. Additionally, the onion rings, priced at nine dollars, were disappointing as the ranch dressing doesn't taste good and did not enhance the flavor. The onion rings soggy .
