My husband & I have been wanting to try this place since it opened. Finally visited on a Sunday evening for the Arizona restaurant week. The food was absolutely delicious. The Hamachi Crudo was a favorite. The service was lacking and disappointing. Our waiter didn't even introduce himeself by his name. Not once asked how everything was tasting. I gotta say since last I dined here things have fallen off the rails. Prices have gone up dramatically while the quality of the food is nowhere near as good when they first opened up. The service was beyond terrible. Kyle, our "server" seemed like he couldn't care less about us. We even had an exchange with the table next to us that had the same server and they weren't too happy with his dry and careless service. For the prices you guys are charging, would it really be too much to ask that you hire servers that actually care about the guest experience? We ended up dropping $300 and still stopped at in and out afterwards because WE WERE STILL HUNGRY. Oh and the service we got at in and out was 3x better lol. read more

The specials were great. The pork belly skewers were fantastic, the Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly and the shrimp/bacon skewers were pretty dang good too. Food excellent!!! Great side salad with lots of variety of veggies. Good green tea. I had the double salmon roll and my husband and mom had bowls, one beef and salmon. Green tea was smooth with no bitterness. Restaurant was clean and efficient. I felt like our waiter was attentive but a bit impatient as we were new customers and more than usual questions on spice levels etc. the specials were pricey on the printed sheet so we opted to try items we were more familiar with to check how the quality was. My son's birthday celebration ended up being here. Made reservations prior which is highly recommended. Called the day before and only availability was outside & my timeframe worked for 7:00 PM. Beautiful weather so our table outside was perfect. We were planning to start with the edamame, but unfortunately they don't make a spicy or garlic flavored sauce so we opted out of that & got the Crispy Truffle Crab which has a snow crab mix, truffle oil & and a crispy fried sushi rice. This was absolutely delicious! We then ordered numerous rolls had to order two of the Oxtail Rolls because it was so amazing! The Udon Carbonara Pasta was an excellent dish! Super creamy sauce that was just luscious! Drinks were really good. Suggest the cold Sake & the Kamogawa Breeze which is a a peach sparkling sake- Super refreshing especially on a warm evening! Desserts: The Sake Cheesecake was delicious and the Matcha Tiramisu was good if you love Matcha. The service was a little lacking, but our server was extremely pleasant. Atmosphere is great & we enjoyed our dining experience on the patio. This place is pretty pricey and the rolls add up quickly. We really enjoyed everything unfortunately no birthday recognition from the establishment, but we partied for the occasion. Where to start. We've been missing good Japanese since Toyama closed a few years ago and Mo and Jiro went back to Japan. I saw a ad for Shimogamo on Insta for restaurant week that featured Miso Black Cod (my favorite). So we trekked from N Scottsdale to Gilbert to try it.. OMG I found paradise! Having lived in Tokyo for 5 years I'm very snobby on Japanese food. Shimogamo is top notch excellent Japanese cuisine! The fish is fresh and you can tell it's hand selected. The Ikura was so good, no fishy taste and luxurious, Hamachi ? Wonderful! The Black cod was other worldly as was the custard we had for desert. All in all a perfect 10! Can't wait to go back and try the Okinomiaki (even though it Osaka style) and the gizzard yakitori. Do not miss this restaurant! Full stop. I might have well have been back in Hiroo Tokyo Japan. This location is such a downgrade from the Chandler location. The original location is amazing, the staff is always extremely helpful. This one the staff seemed to be genuinely annoyed to be working. Our server was so quiet and annoyed and the bartender didn't even explain our drinks when he delivered them, even though we asked to be surprised and let them choose our drinks. The food was great, quality still compares but we did miss some of the menu items they don't have here. We tried to give this location a second shot and scheduled lunch reservations for our wedding anniversary on NYE through their website (using Open Table since that's where you get directed to). We have young kids at home so we could only do lunch and Chandler doesn't serve lunch today. We were called about an hour before our reservations saying we needed to come in earlier because they were forcing everyone out early to decorate for NYE and they blocked their calendar but Open Table didn't (even that's the only way to book?). Needless to say, we couldn't drop everything and get to the restaurant early to only be able to sit for less than an hour with kids at home and no baby sitter on the way. If you have young kids, you know. Why didn't they call us when they opened? So our anniversary date was canceled on us which was heartbreaking as we barley get out as it is. Disappointed in this location and will never be returning. If you want to try them, go to Chandler. It feels like an entire different owner. read more

I love the place! I have visited several times. It is pricey, but there are a few appetizers on the menu that will not bankrupt anyone. I love their duck, as well as sashimi. Tuna is fantastic, and halibut sashimi is one of the best I have had. Also, udon carbonara is quite delicious. As for my favorite, I order udon noodle soup and tempura shrimp on the side. They offer an amazing selection of wine, sake, beer, and great cocktails. Be advised, there are many things on the menu that are very expensive, but wagyu is not my favorite anyway. Service is a bit reserved - it's all Japanese staff (except for the bar) and they are not very warm. They will not be excited to answer multiple questions about sushi rolls or fish you have never heard of. They do have a lot of Japanese guests as well. Finally, the bartenders (both American and Japanese) are amazing and their service is outstanding. If you need help ordering, I suggest sitting at the bar! They will offer honest and truly helpful suggestions. Reservations are essential. Ambiance is somewhat minimalistic and sleek - I do like it a lot. I have never been so disappointed and upset, ever, after leaving a restaurant. I had to take an entire week to calm down before I wrote this review. But, I want to make sure people know exactly what they are getting into by going here for dinner before they spend a lot of money for horrible service. I have been SO excited to try this sushi restaurant. I have heard a ton of good things about the food here. When I saw it was on restaurant week and checked out the menu, I thought what better way to try it AND they had a good food option for my husband (who doesn't like sushi). Well, that was a HUGE mistake. We were greeted by a very nice hostess and she sat us right away, as I had a reservation. We sat at our table for 10 minutes, with multiple servers passing right by us a ton of times. Clearly no one was going to come over to our table, so after being annoyed for 10 minutes, I got up and asked the hostess if she could send someone over to our table. The server comes over and says "Thanks for waiting"... No apology or acknowledgement.. We made sure to order ALL of our food and drink selections right away because we didn't want to risk him not coming back again. The manager (I guess it was) sent over two free shots of sake to make up for the fact that no one came to our table. I received my cocktail, then the appetizer portion, then the nigiri portion, then we just sat and waited... And waited.. and waited.... The server finally came up and I asked where the steak entree was, and he hesitantly said it was coming. TEN minutes later (which we now have been sitting there a total of minimum 45 minutes) he comes over again, completely unaware we still don't have our steak, and asks if I want another drink. At this point, my husband is absolutely starving and furious we just told him to get the steak and put it in a box to go. And I just accepted I wasn't going to get the dessert portion because who knows how long that would have taken. The entire time this is all going on, the table right next to us, also ordered off the restaurant week menu, they received all 4 courses AND paid the check all in the same amount of time we were sitting down.. And we still had not even gotten our steak. The manager comes over and asks how everything is and told him how upset and unacceptable this is, and he did NOT apologize at all, he made an excuse. And his excuse was because we ordered off the restaurant week menu so it takes 45 minutes for the steak to come out. Well,, that's a lie because the table next to us is already ready to leave because they had gotten all four courses and paid and it's been the same amount of time. I then reminded him that I needed to tell the hostess to send someone over to our table because no one was coming and he said that he sent over free shots to apologize for that. Ok, i DONT NEED free shots! I NEED good service.... Which clearly they have no standards here or care because they know all the checks here are going to be large so they just bank on the fact that the tips are going to be big anyways. Needless to say, we stopped at Taco Bell on the way home so my husband could actually have something to eat. No quality of sushi is worth this kind of disgraceful and horrible service, especially when you see what the amount of your check is going to be. I would tell everyone to stay away, but if you must go there to try it, if you immediately get bad service, I would just walk out. Do not ruin your evening and waste money like I did. read more

We are huge fans of Shimogamo Chandler, living in Gilbert I was really excited to see them opening a restaurant that was half the distance for us. We went to the opening last night, I had 7:30 reservations and we were seated right away. The new location is beautiful. It's different enough to stand on its own but still felt like Shimogamo. For only having been open for 3 hours I was very impressed with the quality of the food, the speed in which it came and the accuracy of our order. Everything was delicious! We had sushi, ribs, pork katsu, and shrimp tempura. The shrimp could have been fried just a tad longer but overall everything was perfect. The service was as expected for an opening night but I am stretching, given that some issues were out of their control. Its not cheap. And sure, there are cheaper options - go to Albertsons to get your sushi if price is an issue for you, or one of the other hundreds of fast-food Korean sushi places masquerading as a Japanese restaurant. Quality ingredients cost more, this is not cheap gas station sushi. Overall an amazing opening night. We look forward to many years of dinners, celebrations and memories at the new location. I'm not much into leaving reviews but had to do this time to give credit where it's due. Me and my wife recently moved from Torrance, California where Japanese restaurants are abundant after spending nearly 10 years. We both grew up in Japan and ever since we came to the states, going to a nice Japanese restaurant for a special occasion became somewhat of our tradition. Anyway, I was looking for a restaurant for my wife's birthday night. I made a reservation because a friend of mine from work told me good things about this restaurant. Honestly, I was somewhat skeptical before coming here simply because of my unfamiliarity with the restaurant and menu, not to menion that there is no ocean nearby...To much our surprise though, everything we had was incredible. Truffle amberjack came to our table first and we were both blown away. Combination of truffle ponzu and red onion adds nice flavor to amberjack which tasted fresh. 2 spoons of seafood cheviche had very distinct flavors - hotate and orange with jalapeno was refreshing and strong yet nice aftertaste of hotate while seared salmon was just amazing. I generally don't much care for tofu but agedashi tofu I had was something else. The dashi was so good that I finished it all. Miyazaki gyu rib eye was extremely tender and juicy. The onion sauce and the side of green onion on top made it even better. Definitely the best among everything we had. Sushi assortment at the end was great without exception. Not sure if fish were frozen to keep it fresh, but I couldn't tell because they all tasted fresh. If it were, they do a great job defrosting it. I am happily surprised I found one of the best Japanese restaurants here in Gilbert. The food was simply amazing. But equally important was Kai who helped us make all of this happen. We didn't know that Omakase generally require us to call them ahead of time. We almost gave up and try something else, but he accommodated our request. Also, his comments on the dishes were on point - he not only knows the dishes they serve well but also knows which one is great. Everything he said he likes was in fact incredible. I am sorry to say that your business is failing. I have been a loyal customer since your mother and father opened the original Shimogamo in Chandler. The Chandler location is in dire need of upkeep and repairs. But tonight's experience says it all. I have gone to the pre-opening of the Gilbert location, and many of the special events. Always bringing someone that hadn't experienced your food. I have taken my friends, family and even the pastors of my church. Usually with good experience. Tonight I brought an especially important individual. I had reservations for a table and was through open table which was confirmed by both open table and you confirmation email. When I arrived the person I was to meet there was already seated at the end of the sushi bar. I explained I had reservations for a table. You then lied to me stating that open table made the error (they didn't). Reality was you had received a request for a table of 20 and bumped me. Had you been honest I would have gladly given up my reservation. Instead you lied, deflected, and lost years of integrity and honor. When I was in Japan the Edo sushi chef pretended he had never heard of you, now I understand why. You disrespect and disgrace your parents and your vocation. I will make it my singular purpose to expose you for the frauds that you are. Your shame will survive you. read more

WOW! From the service to the food and everything in between, Shimogamo Gilbert was a phenomenal experience! To start Peter was a sincere, friendly face welcoming us to our seats. Due to earlier customers enjoying their time so much they decided to stay longer, our reserved table was not ready but Peter offered an even better deal... sit right in front of the executive chef and watch him and his team make the most delicious and beautiful sushi right in front of our eyes. I've never been so thankful to lose out on a table. Next, the food was delicious. The miso soup was the best I every had! The shrimp tempura was mouthwatering, I'm only upset that I agreed to share it with my table and not keep it all to myself. And my favorite roll of the night was the Shimogamo Roll - the combination of the panko shrimp, cucumber, avocado and surprising hint of lemon was so YUMMY! Lastly, the overall service was fantastic. I already mentioned Peter but I truly cannot give him enough praise for how well he is running the ship. But also our servers were very sweet, attentive and friendly. However, I think the real highlight of our night was the chefs. Not only did we get to watch them in action, but they were so nice and friendly answering our questions about the food, recommendations and their culinary history. I highly recommend requesting sitting at the sushi bar because Tac and his team are so full of talent and genuine love for the food they are making. Pork spare ribs, fantastic. Miso black cod, best fish I've had in my entire life. Spend the money on the fresh grated wasabi, you won't regret it; miles better than paste, or pickled wasabi. It was light, almost sweet, and not too overpowering. Rolls are great. The skewers are delightful. The yakitori is incredible. Be prepared to spend a bit of money, as it's easy to do and everything is so good you'll want to order more. The mango snow cone thing was awesome. The pudding was heavenly. So I placed a phone order which she called me back to confirm it and she got it all wrong. Then she told me to pick it up in 45 minutes. So I showed up in 45 minutes and it wasn't ready. And there were only a few people in the restaurant, so why did she tell me 8:30 when I originally called? So I grabbed a drink and finally got my food. $155! I get sushi all the time. And the prices here are astronomical. Not to mention, I got like four pieces of sashimi. And a 10% takeout fee? Never have seen that before. $12 for fresh wasabi. Sad to say the Gilbert location is not even half of what the original location is...in every respect!! What's new is not always nice! Been going to the original since it opened and will never return to this location. The service is below average with zero care or understanding how to serve sushi guests. Servers have no clue what the fish is or tastes like. The sushi lacks in every aspect as compared to the original. The nigiri tasted good but was boring with ZERO creativity for toppings or flavor! The sushi chef just cut pieces of fish and put it on rice. We should have just gone to a conveyor belt location. Timing was way off on everything. Multiple items of our order were missed without even so much as a simple apology..and we even had to ask to have things removed from the bill as they tried to charge us. The sushi bar is so impersonal and actually quite bad as the chefs have to reach very far to hand you dishes. The place is just dirty! Mr Yoshi would be ashamed if he had walked in and saw it like this...floors were dirty, the bathroom was a disaster, servers with dirty and filthy clothing, hair loose on employees and more. We will just go to the original and let the mall crowd have this one. No wonder there were no reservations available for the original and dozens for the Gilbert spot. We have been patrons of the original Chandler location, so we were delighted to discover the new establishment with its more contemporary atmosphere. Our meal included chirashi, yakitori, and green tea tiramisu, all of which we found to be of exceptional quality and freshness. While we were overall pleased with our experience, we feel that the seating arrangements detracted from our enjoyment. The restaurant appeared to have maximized its space and profitability to the detriment of customer comfort, resulting in a somewhat cramped and overcrowded atmosphere. This was disappointing as it overshadowed the otherwise clean, modern ambience of the restaurant, making it less conducive to a relaxing dining experience. There are simply too many chairs at the sushi bar and too many tables in the restaurant. For this reason, it is a three-star restaurant in lieu of a solid four-star restaurant. read more

Wow! What a great place. The outside design was what first caught my eye when we were in the area the day before. When we walked in, it was much more inviting, simple, and less pretentious than what you'd expect from the outside. The service was great. It almost felt like we had 3 servers as they all worked as a team and made sure the customers were well taken care of. For the drinks, I ordered the blossom in gyoen, which was suggested by the server when asked to recommend a sweet drink. Unique flavor profile. It starts off as slightly bitter, and then it ends as sweet. It was delicious. Later on, I ordered the autumn in kinkaku. Although it was not bad, I do not prefer the flavor. The vanilla in the whiskey is very strong. The foam was sweet and tasty, but the drink itself was bitter; I would not order this cocktail again. For the appetizer, we ordered the hamachi chile lime crudo. Spectacular! It was so fresh. The fish itself had great texture, and the flavor, although subtle, wanted you coming back for more. The fish was hearty. The sauce it came with was slightly tangy but not spicy at all. At the end of the dinner, this was our preferred dish. From the signature rolls, we ordered the citrus roll and aburi salmon roll. We also ordered the caterpillar roll from the classics. Of the 3, the aburi was my favorite, and the caterpillar was boyfriends favorite. The aburi had different textures, and the flavors would change from citrus/sour to savory. The citrus roll was simple but tasty. I can't personally say anything special about the caterpillar roll. Boyfriend says it could've used more eel sauce. Everything was again very fresh. We also ordered the pork belly from the kitchen. I wouldn't order this again. I felt it was overcooked and lacked much flavor other than being salty. We asked for more of the pickled onion it came with to be able to enjoy it. At this point, I would've given the food 4 stars, but the dessert brought it up to 5 stars. We ordered the saikyo miso pudding. I would say the texture and some of the flavors were similar to creme brulee (minus the hardened sugar). Try this dish! We were contemplating on ordering another one, it was amazing. I hope the restaurant keeps up the current standards. We would highly recommend! I'm still at a loss as to why this place was so bad. Multiple people have told us it was good. Called earlier in the day, said they had us at the sushi bar, we were okay with that. Nope, we were at a plastic screened bar staring at the cooks and not what we imagined when told sushi bar at all. Our waiter talked sooooooooooo slow and soft that I couldn't even focus on what he was saying because it was loud. Miso: I'm all in on spring onions in my broth but chunks of white onions were a bit much. Oysters: 1/2 dozen came dressed 3 ways, only one was pleasant. The other two were fishy and highly unpleasant. Sushi rolls: Surf and turf roll. We wanted to love this. We had heard such great things. It was not good. At all. The flavors did not come together well. The only decent thing was the Unagi Nigiri (so good) and the Yuzu tuna roll was meh.. lighter, semi refreshing, and a tad spicy. Wonderful sushi experience at their new Gilbert location (right near our house!). Great cocktails to enjoy with excellent choices of High quality nigiri and sashimi. We just enjoyed their from Japan sushi Endo experience which was amazing! read more
