Updated review-- still 5 stars for me :) Tonight we went to dinner hosted by the Tasting Collective (a dining club I joined last year). The menu was 5 courses prix fixe designed by the head chef for this group. The restaurant was closed as a private event. Service was excellent, the food was also so delicious, and cocktails were great too. Shimogamo is one of the few Japanese restaurants in the valley that remind me of eating Japanese food in Japan. It's well prepared, fresh, and high quality. The cocktails are creative and nods to Japan with delicate flavors and unique ingredients. Our courses were: started with the truffle amberjack which is a flavor bomb, very rich and truffle forward. Which I don't always enjoy but when paired with amberjack, it was great. 2nd course was a nigiri plate- 4 choices: sea bream (which I love), a fancy type salmon, toro, and couple pieces of the wagyu roll. Next onto a darn near perfect crab croquet that was creamy with big pieces of crab and perfectly fried, and main course was K4 ranch Wagyu from Prescott. Very buttery and delicious. We ended with a matcha basque cheesecake. The chefs talked about the food, answered questions, and talked about their background. It was an enjoyable dinner and we will be back for the "oysters and cocktails" hour they were promoting. I love both of those things.

For work, we were doing an onsite visit and wanted a nice Sunday dinner before kicking off the visit to the Phoenix office. One of my NYC coworkers mentioned Shimogamo, and I mentioned liking the Gilbert location a few weeks back. She reached out and made a reservation for 10-12 of us. I hadn't realized how small this location was, so it meant she rented the room for an exceptional exclusive dining experience! Things We Ordered I Tried: - Yuzu Mule: loved this drink at the Gilbert location, so I ordered again. Very refreshing and recommend if you like mules. - Hamachi Chili Lime Crudo: Great flavor and first time trying a crudo. I really liked the subtle heat and acidity of the citrus ponzu. - Crispy Truffle Crab: This was decent, but overall my least favorite of our starters & small bites. - Spicy Tuna Tartare: This was delicious and enjoyed the nori chips to serve the spicy tuna on. - Kagoshima Filet ($120): I'm sad to report... this was FANTASTIC. I wanted to hate it at the price point of $120, but it truly melts in your mouth. My first experience trying Wagyu and it was a A5 rating, which is the highest. Started with a bougie one it seems! - Tamago Roll: I do enjoy a tamago roll, and this was pretty good. - Crazy Roll: I enjoyed this at the Gilbert location, though I do still standby this could be elevated with a spicy mayo or topping. - Surf 'N Turf Roll: This was my favorite roll of the night! A5 Wagyu and shrimp tempura?! Heck yeah! Absolutely delicious, though I'm not a huge fan of mustard. Still a delicious roll and likely what I'd get if I returned. - Yuzu Mushrooms: One of the specials listed, and decent flavor. Though, I think I'd stick to rolls if returning. - Matcha Tiramisu: I was told this was a must order, but I'm truly baffled at this desert. This is more like a no bake cheesecake and not a tiramisu. The red bean paste was an odd texture at the bottom and very hard to get your spoon all the way down to get all the elements of the dessert. - Mango Kakigori: Very light and refreshing! A hit with the team, and we had three to share. Shout out to Matthew for an amazing experience! Very attentive and appreciated the suggestions, while helping ensure we met the spend requirement for renting the room ($1200). What a truly magic night that made us feel like VIP!

I had sky-high expectations for this place... and they absolutely crushed them! My wife and I were hit with a massive sushi craving, so we decided to check out Shimogamo's Chandler location. We'd already fallen in love with their Gilbert spot on a previous date night, but this time around? We had a baby in tow. Needless to say, we weren't entirely sure what to expect. Turns out, we had nothing to worry about. We were seated quickly and greeted so warmly. Even though the only available seating was at the sushi bar, the hostess didn't blink an eye--she immediately offered a high chair, and it fit perfectly right next to us (zero complaints from me!). Our waiter was incredibly friendly, walked us through the menu beautifully, and clued us in on the big differentiator for this location: their grill. Naturally, we had to test it out. We ordered the A5 Wagyu skewers, and oh my god, they literally melted in our mouths. As for the sushi, it came out fast, and the cuts were incredibly generous. The absolute star of the show was the toro--pure, buttery bliss that dissolved instantly. We also grabbed a sashimi sampler and a few other pieces; everything was flawlessly fresh. Even the side salad was on point and--bless them--not totally drenched in dressing. The only minor skip for me was the oysters, which weren't quite my favorite, but everything else easily made up for it. If you want top-tier, melt-in-your-mouth sushi and killer grill items, this spot is a must. We will absolutely be back!

Delicious! I can see why this place gets busy. Everything was so good, and the bartenders were fantastic. My spouse and I had such a great time talking with them and they made delicious cocktails. And the nigiri....So fresh and buttery it practically melted in your mouth. Absolutely incredible. Definitely a must try, book a reservation if you can or sit at the bar!

Best sushi in AZ! I highly recommend eating here and our service was amazing. I will be back soon!

Beef Miso Udon was really good. It was the right kind of spicy and loved the right amount of vegetables making it balanced

Came here with my coworkers and we all love our dishes from the lunch menu! Tip: the lunch menu has some of the same items in the dinner menu but for a cheaper price! I got the Udon Carbonara $15! This dish was delicious. The udon itself was AL Dente, chewy and soft at the same time. I honestly can just slurp the udon because of how good the texture is. The sauce was so creamy. And the bacon was a nice add to the dish. It was not greasy and the bacon flavor shines throughout the dish with the sauce and udon. Today's special was Truffle chicken meatball. It was so good! Comes with yuzu salt and spicy salt on the side. It has all the flavors combined: light sweetness from the sauce, savory from chicken, citrus from lemon, spicy and yuzu flavor from the Japanese salts. Can't wait to go back to try more items on the lunch menu. The staff was really nice, welcoming, and make conversations with us. The restaurant has a calm atmosphere.

Hamachi crudo (restaurant week lunch portion)

I may not be able to eat sushi anywhere else after this! I came for the Restaurant Week lunch deal and am so glad I finally made it here. Everything from service to ambiance to food was excellent. And I love that they brought lunch service back to this location! Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and still make a reservation! It was busy! I wanted something fun to drink but non-alcoholic, so the bartender stopped by to help me decide. I got the Miso Sour and it was so good! This had a nice balance of flavors. I started with the Hamachi Crudo which has grapefruit ponzu, lemon mayo, Serrano pepper, and thin cucumber slices. This was so good! Refreshing with just the right amount of spice. Next I enjoyed chopped salad and miso. The salad was very fresh and had a variety of goodies including edamame, purple cabbage, and avocado. The miso is so good!! It was delicate and yet so flavorful. I chose the Yuzu tuna roll option which has spicy tuna and avocado inside, with big eye tuna on top, garnished with micro cilantro, red onion, and yuzu. This was so good! I also thought their ginger stood out - I would bet they make this in house. I can see why this always has such great reviews!

We tried Shimogamo for the first time tonight and the experience all around was spectacular! Our waiter knew both the menu and specials inside and out, was passionate, and gave excellent recommendations. (I wish we could remember his name!) We enjoyed every single thing ordered - and are already looking forward to the next trip to try more - especially with fall specials upcoming!! I'm a robust uncultured middle aged white woman, and they reserved their judgments on my fork usage. This place, in its entirety, is rad. I love it!

My date and I experienced the Omakase at Chandler and the service by Grace was amazing!! She is the amazing grace of the establishment. Alongside her great service, the ambiance was very welcoming. Our favorite dishes for the night for the both of us was between the scallops, the cod, and the amberjack. We absolutely loved the Kakigori as it reminded us of a cute childhood date night treat.

Very good sushi place! However I will say their sushi is a lot better than their hot plates. The nigiri's were super delicious and seemed pretty fresh. Was not super impressed with their miso black cod. Servers were super sweet and attentive.

Great yelp reviews, interesting menu, So decided to celebrate Anniversary meal here. Made reservation, and was seated upon arrival. The decor is pleasant & minimalist. Seating was adequate, but not great. I am of jumbo size, though my wife is not. Table was barely big enough for me to get comfy at. Chair was barely ok. We had perused the menu before arriving so knew what we would order. Cocktails were excellent! Shimogamo roll..excellent! Crispy truffle crab , unimpressed. slivers of shredded crab on top of a tiny toast square. $ 23 Tempura udon bowl, very good. Came with 2 delicious large tempura shrimp. Chirashi bowl. Very nice assortment of super fresh quality sashimi, over perfect rice. The hit of the meal was the Saikyo miso black cod. We agreed, this was the most scrumptious piece of fish we had ever eaten. PERFECTLY cooked, buttery and luscious. Service was good, unpretentious, though final tab was on the high side. Food and drinks were outstanding, service good, atmosphere Japanese austere & pleasant. We enjoyed the meal, and compliment the chefs!

My boss, who is a big foodie, recommended this place, so I brought one of my coworkers along to try it out. We ended up ordering a lot of sushi, including several of their specialty rolls. Everything was incredibly fresh, which I was thrilled about -- especially since I've had mixed experiences with freshness at some other sushi spots in Phoenix. The uni was very good, and the Wagyu was tasty and well prepared. You can really tell they care about quality. Overall, a great sushi experience with high-quality fish and solid execution. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Shimogamo - Chandler Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Shimogamo - Chandler

Do we need reservations on a tuesday?

I would always suggest reservations especially if you want to eat at the sushi bar. Otherwise depending on what time you could always walk in, they have "counter seating" too which is NOT the sushi bar.

Do they order buffet menu?

Hell Nah!! This establishment is quality not quantity...

Is there a dress code?

No, definitely not

Are you guys open for dine in right now?

Yes

Do you serve the Dinner Menu during Lunch hours?

Yes we do, except for the special items. Please ask the server for the menu.

Do they deliver?

No. We neither take to-go orders nor deliver. It’s just for the safety purpose. We serve fresh fish that need to be managed carefully under professional care.

I had this place saved for some time as it nearby, and I have to say "thank you" to all my Yelpers as the food and the service matched at the positive feedback. Parking was fairly simple as it's located on the corner of Dobson and Guadalupe, and once inside, the staff was very welcoming and provided the menu. The TVs were some Pet channel full of cuteness (that's the only word that comes to mind for me to describe), while the other had something similar but maybe of bloopers. Either way, it was cool and blended in with the stylishly cool decor. As for lunch, I decided to go with the Bento box that included Beef and Broccoli as the main dish. It came with a side of rice, spring roll, a crab ragoon, and 4 sushi pieces. They did bring out a courtesy salad, which was nice. I went with a fountain drink but they do have Sake, Beer & Wine. Service and speediness of the food were good, and as you can tell by my photo, it was steaming hot when it arrived. Overall, everything was on point, and I think I'll come back and try another Bento box lunch special.

She was super attentive too and kept refilling our drinks throughout the meal. We tried a mix of specialty rolls and more basic rolls. Most of the specialty rolls were around $15 each, while the basic rolls were under $10. The spicy tuna rolls were especially good for the price because they were cheap, but still came out huge. Overall the portions were very generous and the prices weren't bad at all. I got the Hell Fire roll and it definitely lived up to the name. I handle spicy food really well and even for me this thing was extremely spicy. It was almost painfully hot, but honestly I kind of enjoyed the challenge, It was also really good besides just being spicy, so I'd definitely get it again. The inside also had a cool vibe with all the colorful lighting and it wasn't too busy when we went which was nice. Most of our sushi came out almost immediately. The fried rolls understandably took a little longer since they had to be made fresh. My only small complaint is I wish everything would of came out closer to the same time, because some of us already had food while we were still waiting on the fried rolls.
