Who knows how long this chair hasn't been cleaned?!
    Joy J.

First off, let me start by saying that no matter how good the food is, if the service sucks, I will NEVER return. Period! Such was the case with this establishment that my sister happened to spot as she was driving by one day. She's a sushiholic and has to have it at least once a week. Last weekend, I had no plans and we ended up eating here at Kodo Sushi Sake for lunch on Sunday. We went when they had just opened, so as far as I could see, there were only 4 other parties in the round dining room with us. When I walked in, I told the guy in the black shirt (whose name is Jason, if I recall correctly) that I was meeting my sister. He was walking past me and waved his arm toward the dining room and mumbled something like, "over there." Ummm.. okay. I made my way to the table where my sister was seated and the first thing I noticed was the leftover bits of rice on one of the chairs. Gross! I sat next to it and began checking out the menu. I must say, they do have some pretty good stuff on there, so I ordered a few dishes. Sis already ordered some things, but it took a while for anything to even come out. When they finally did, they came... one by one. Most places usually bring you everything at once or at least 2 to 3 dishes together. As time passed, and the food seemed to take forever coming out, I couldn't help but notice with my wandering eyes the old furniture that is obviously worn. Also, the ant/roach trap in a corner under the table next to us. It looked like it's been there for a few months and definitely needs to be replaced. The bowl that my salad came in was also chipped on the edge. Once we finally had everything and were ready for the bill, the young girl who served us brought it out. Or so we thought. My sister put cash in and I covered the rest with my card. She took it but came back with a new bill that was about $40 more. At first we were confused, but realized she brought us the wrong bill the first time. She didn't say anything and when we waited for her to come back, she never did. At this point we were pretty irritated at the sloth-like service and now this bill issue. We decided to take it up to the front and ask about it. We asked Jason, who clearly became annoyed as soon as we started asking where the other bill was (the first one that we were given). He started getting all huffy and puffy saying that wasn't our bill, and that the girl had mistakenly given us someone else's. She came out and brought the correct one, and told Jason she gave us the wrong one. Mind you, she didn't tell us as we stood there, she told Jason as if we weren't there at all. I asked him nicely if he was the manager/owner and he said no, pointing to the kitchen saying, "he's the owner." I asked for his name, and then he called the owner over. Owner comes to us and Jason starts going off in their native language (about the situation, I assume). Owner goes back to the kitchen, never addressing us or apologizing for the situation. Jason then prints out the correct receipt, tells me the first transaction will be voided and the girl says my money will be back in my account in a few days. Idk about you, but I HATE when that happens. I sign the bill and as we begin making our way out the door, Jason apologizes from across the bar with a half-ass " sorry about the confusion." Yeah, well, I'm sorry your service was crap and no, you didn't deserve a tip. The Good: food tasted great, prices are reasonable, and they have some unique rolls to offer. The Bad: dated furniture not wiped/cleaned very well, chipped dishes, and filthy ant/roach traps which make for an unappealing dining atmosphere. Here's a tip: don't let your eyes wander as you wait for your food. You may lose your appetite if you have a weak stomach! The UGLY: service was extremely slow, especially on a Sunday with 5 parties. Staff was cold and rude. I was going to rate this place with 1 star but as always, I'm being generous because the food was delicious. I know there are other locations throughout the valley, so I'll probably try those out. I truly hope you don't experience what we did! Good luck!

We've been coming here for quite a while especially since they have delicious food with easy and convenient parking, lots of seating, servers and sushi chefs! Kodo has great quality! They were crazy crazy crazy busy tonight for some reason. Maybe they were a little short handed but there seemed to be plenty of people craving sushi tonight! Once we got seated we waited a bit then were able to order drinks then another wait til we could order food. It was obvious they weren't expecting so many people to come in tonight. Some people got a little impatient but once the waitlist was cleared things calmed down a bit. As always, everything was freshly made and delicious. We got chicken karaage wings, edamame, unagi nigiri, salmon nigiri, beef roll, rainbow roll and mirage roll plus a Sapporo and an Asahi beer. Our orders came out fast and they checked on us regularly. They have pretty decor and outside seating for nicer weather. Everyone seemed quite happy with their orders and all of the staff were busy! They thanked us as we left (as they always do). It's so nice to have a reasonably priced dine in sushi restaurant in the neighborhood! Please pay them a visit and support this locally owned family style restaurant for a good meal! P.s. Even if they're busy and there's a wait, please support all of the small locally owned restaurants like Kodo. They are doing their best to serve us all!

Best sushi in town! The rolls are delicious and beautifully presented. I was pleasantly surprised to find this spot -- the quality of the fish is excellent, and they offer a great variety of rolls. I just wish they had a happy hour! I'm definitely coming back. The staff is very friendly, and the ambience is cozy. Highly recommended!

I was craving some sushi and decided to stop in for a quick lunch. I ordered the sashimi lunch box which was delicious. I asked the waiter if I can substitute the tuna for toro. It was a $4 charge but well worth it. The sashimi was fresh and so was the nigiri. I also tried the seared toro and salmon nigiri that was on the house from the chef! Thanks chef, it was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back to order more of the seared nigiri.

Today was my first time here. I was skeptical due to recent reviews... Everything was just fine, nothing special. I wasn't impressed by the sushi menu. I was hoping for a couple more options. The rolls tasted fine, but not super fresh or good quality. However, they were very beautifully plated. Tempura basket wasn't very good. The batter was thicker than I prefer. Spicy garlic edamame was fine. The service was fine. I'm not sure if this was a one time issue due to air conditioning issues or what but today the restaurant was too hot inside. They had fans going but overall it was pretty uncomfortable. Regardless of the restaurants temperature, nothing that we exp here today would have me eager to come back.

    Receipt from our dinner

This is a heartbreaking review to write, as this is our favorite Chandler sushi place. But the last few times have been disappointing from a customer service standpoint, and this was the worst. My husband and I had a rare Saturday evening sport free with our youngest and decided to go have dinner the three of us, we walked into Kodo at 8:45 p.m. (again, Saturday) and the moment we walked in we were told "we are closing at 9:30 p.m. if you can be fast we will make sure you get to eat"...I wish we would have just turned around at that point but since we love the food and it's our daughter's favorite sushi place, we stayed. We were ushered to a tiny table in the back corner, and we were quite literally glared at by the sushi chef the entire time. To the point that my (9 year old) daughter said mom why is he looking at us like that. It was so obvious that we were a burden, while we are literally there 45 minutes ahead of the purported closing time of 9:30, the door says 10 p.m. on Saturdays. Anyway, we ordered quickly since we know what we like there and felt like we needed to rush. Food was thrown together, we were charged adult price for a kids meal, and we were never checked on again after the food was delivered they all just huddled around staring at us like they were waiting for us to leave. We rushed out right at 9:30 so as not to cause them a moment over their "closing time" and, because we still felt a tip was necessary, $80+ later and majority of our food in to-go bags since we barely actually ate, it was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had and we are done with Kodo. Which, again, is sad as it really is our favorite food-wise, but when the experience is horrible it just isn't worth it anymore.

I was very excited to try this place as my new local sushi joint and they (mostly) didn't disappoint. When I walked in around 7 PM the place was pretty darn slow. The tables had people but it certainly wasn't full and most people were nearing the end of their meal. It took someone a good 3-4 minutes to even acknowledge I walked in and once I sat down at the bar (I did tell the host I was sitting there) no one served me or even greeted me for about ten minutes. After they awkwardly yelled at each other about who should be helping me, someone finally came over. I was bummed because it definitely felt like no one wanted to serve me but no idea why that would be. Luckily things turned around once my server came over. She took my order while the other server popped behind the bar and quickly served me my water and Sapporo (ON DRAFT) at the same time. I had the H3 roll and everything tasted fresh, the avocado was the perfect texture, the rice was perfectly cooked, and flavors were on point. I also grabbed a little bowl of miso soup and it was yummy but only had a couple pieces of tofu and a couple drops of scallions. Overall the experience turned around as service got better and food was great. I will probably try a table next time since the barstools are shorter and the bar top is pretty tall and as a short girl it felt like I didn't quite fit. Otherwise, definitely a good experience and can't wait to go back and try again! P.s. It's tucked into a shopping strip mall and could easily get missed but don't miss it!

It's a sad day when the sushi spot you have been a frequent guest is a place where the staff suddenly treats you rudely. The owner Juno sold to new management and that is right when things started going south. This evening was appauling! Instead of ordering my normal things I picked something new to try. It was a rice dish that lacked taste and the texture of the meat was weird. I told the waitress Mindy and she gave me major attitude saying "too bad" and I "have to have it". I was quick to remind her that I come to dine here frequently, by myself, with friends and have recommended Kodo to so many in the area. That all stops now! When it was clear I was not going to eat it, another waitress started yelling in my face causing an embarrassing scene then she took the dish, threw the food across the bar and pryed the fork from my hand. I asked nicely for my check despite the rudeness and Mindy scolded me "you come here and I always serve you but you not happy person". I said in reply "what is not nice is how you treat me as a loyal customer, so no I am not happy, please give me my bill I am leaving." The check had the rice item that I didn't like which was thrown away. I requested it be removed from the bill and was told a flat no. Mindy scolded again "you no like but you must pay anyways because you waste food" and that is when I about lost my patience. First of all it was yanked away from me and second of all most restaurants would never treat anyone so horribly. Apparently the new owner/manager was not there to take up my complaint but you can bet I will be following up with him. Completely unacceptable experience.

The food at this location tasted good however the presentation was lacking. Since the first two rolls I ordered were almost floppy and not really tight and compact so they would fall apart when you would try to eat them. The oh my god roll ended up getting burnt on the inside too. Which a bit is to be expected as it is served on fire with a bit of a show. However it was pretty burnt all over the bottom. The service was a bit slow as well. The ambiance was nice. A higher end sushi place for sure. Price: 7/10 Service: 6/10 Cleanliness: 9/10 Taste: 8/10 Value: 6/10 Would I go back to this location? I would be up to try it again. But this time I did not have the greatest experience there.

I really liked Kodo! All the food was delicious and the service was quick. We got the salmon.com which was a combo of salmon nigiri and rolls. We also got an order of the H3 roll and some fried rice. All the sushi was delicious and the fried rice was decent. We also shared some sake, and at one point the owner stopped by and noticed the same carafe was empty. He told the server we needed more sake and got us an order on the house! He was really funny too. All in all, great place and we will definitely be back for future sushi nights!

Its in a building at the edge of a strip mall so seems like plenty of parking. There's a fun light display with the logo outside the front door on the sidewalk. Inside is very cute! They've definitely made an effort on the ambiance. There's also a nice side patio that looks like it has bamboo shades to make it less "strip mall". The staff here are very warm and welcoming. Great service! Throughout our dinner and our long sitting and chatting after, our waitress was friendly, checking in and offering soda refills. We had the shrimp tempura -- really good! My boyfriend and I came to Shimogamo for Mother's Day and ordered the five-course meal. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing compared to our previous visit. The biggest issue was the service. Our waitress, an older woman, came across as dismissive and unnecessarily rude throughout the evening. When we were seated, she offered complimentary rosé. I accepted a glass, but my boyfriend does not drink alcohol, so he politely asked if he could order a mocktail instead. Before he could even finish, she abruptly responded, "No, you can wait to place an order for that," as if he was trying to substitute the complimentary drink, which he was not. He was simply trying to order a beverage. Later, when the braised beef course was served, my boyfriend politely asked if he could have a spoon or fork. The waitress loudly repeated "A SPOON?" in a mocking tone in front of nearby guests, which made the interaction uncomfortable and embarrassing. As for the food, the five-course menu was average at best and far below what we expected from Shimogamo. The salmon tartare and sushi course were both excellent and showed the quality we remembered from our first visit. However, the remaining courses fell flat. The fried branzino was dry and seemed poorly prepared, despite the promising flavors of capers and cream sauce. The braised short rib felt completely out of place on the menu and lacked refinement it was dry, heavy, and more reminiscent of a chain steakhouse meal than an upscale dining experience. The entire dinner also felt rushed, with little attention to pacing or hospitality. What makes this especially disappointing is that we dined here back in November on a double date and had an incredible experience. We spent over $600 that evening, and the service and food were exceptional. Our waitress at that time was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. She guided us through recommendations, and every dish impressed us. That's why this visit was so surprising. Shimogamo clearly has the ability to provide an outstanding dining experience, which makes the decline in both service and execution even more concerning. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously because this restaurant was once one of our favorites.

Han asked if I would trust him to make a few alterations to one of my selections, including a garlic ponzu preparation for the hamachi that was absolutely outstanding -- balanced, layered, and unforgettable. Then came a few off-menu surprises that reminded me exactly why sitting at the sushi bar matters. Thoughtful preparations, incredible fish, and the kind of attention to detail you only get from chefs who truly care about the experience they're creating. Every visit to Yanagi deepens my appreciation for what they are building there. This isn't just great sushi. It's warmth, craftsmanship, hospitality, and passion all working together in perfect harmony. One of the absolute gems of the East Valley. (I'm a picture taker. Not here. #ItsThatGood)

They also have fantastic happy hour and lunch specials that make it easy to stop by more often without breaking the bank. I honestly come back again and again for the spicy edamame and the spicy tuna on crispy rice -- both are absolutely amazing and packed with flavor. The spicy tuna on crispy rice is perfectly done every time, with just the right crunch and spice, and the spicy edamame is seriously addictive. I've also tried the tempura, shrimp tempura roll, miso soup, and several other rolls, and everything I've ordered has been fresh and delicious. You can really tell they take pride in the quality of their food. It's quickly become one of my favorite sushi spots, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great sushi, awesome specials, and consistently friendly service.
