2 stars. The space itself is large and actually pretty nice looking inside, which made it feel like it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, there was a faint sewage smell that immediately tarnished my impression of the place. The sushi wasn't very cold and didn't taste fresh. The flavors within the sushi were fine overall, but nothing felt high quality. The waitress/hostess had a very sarcastic style and at times was a little confusing when answering questions. Oddly enough, that kind of added to the experience and made the meal more entertaining than frustrating. The one saving grace to this place is that the sushi was CHEAP compared to anything I've seen in the Phoenix/Mesa area. If cheap sushi is what you are looking for, you will find it here! But you pay for what you get. Overall, the sushi was not my favorite, and the atmosphere had some issues that made the experience a bit strange. This wasn't my friend's first time here, and she absolutely loves how quiet and peaceful this place always is. Zugoi in Mesa offers a huge, budget-friendly menu with generous portions, and the food is decent. The only downsides I would say for my visit were the slightly is the presentation. It didn't look messy, but it just lack the "wow" factor. The sushi rice was okay on all my rolls I ordered. Overall, it's still a reliable and calm spot. This place had good sushi, The lady who served us (and everyone else in the restaurant) did pretty well considering she had no help. It just had a weird, cold, vacant sort of vibe inside. When you order your food, some complimentary miso soup and Japanese salads come out which is nice. We had spicy tuna rolls, California roll and a Special Spicy tuna roll. Ordered sushi with crab on top rolled with cucumber, spicy beef basil, and orange chicken. I can't remember the name of the sushi but it was not bad. Little disappointed because it did not have any rice.. Spicy basil was not bad nothing stood out. Orange chicken was actually pretty good.. The lady said "well we gave you a shrimp tempura roll" well that's nice, we didn't order it though. So now my son has no dinner to eat. We called to give them a chance to fix the issue and they decided to argue with me instead. Rest of the food was mediocre. What a waste of $110 Crab puffs had barely any cream cheese. Sushi was okay. Zugoi is a good local spot in East Mesa to enjoy tasty appetizers and sushi! Servers have always been very friendly here... which is nice compared to some other sushi restaurants. And I do not think we have ever had to wait for a table... even when we have visited on weekends! That's more attributable to their large space and many tables than it is a reflection of their food. They provide a small house salad and miso soup to those dining in. Both definitely hit the spot! You really can't go wrong with any of their sushi, but some of my go-to rolls include: Firecracker Roll, Crazy Lobster Roll, California Roll, and Spicy Nude Roll! Sometimes they can overdo it with the spicy mayo and other sauces... but it's better than there not being enough sauce, amiright?!? As someone with celiac, I always have to be cognizant of tempura flakes being added... so if that is a concern for you as well, then my recommendation is to err on the side of caution and just ask them to not put tempura flakes on anything. There are few restaurants that offer as diverse a menu as Zugoi does. Whether you're in the mood for Chinese or Japanese, sushi or teriyaki Zugoi has them all. This tastefully re-decorated Village Inn has ample dining for a party of 2 or an entire family including the in-laws. I'm no sushi snob, but I know good sushi when I see it. I ordered a spicy nude roll and the jalapeno poppers. They brought the salad and miso soup immediatly after taking my order. The miso was good, but a little too salty. The salad was fresh with a ginger vinegrette. They kind of go against restaurant etiquette in that they brought my wife's dinner out a few minutes before mine. When my dinner arrived it was evident that they care about their craft. My sushi was nicely arranged and aesthetically pleasing. The spicy nude roll is salmon, shrimp, yellowtail spicy tuna and avocado wrapped in rice paper topped with dynamite sauce and drizzled with chili sauce. The rice paper is substantial enough to pick up with chop sticks and not fall apart. The poppers are deep fried jalapenos stuffed with spicy tuna, cream cheese, wasabi sauce, and eel. They have a crispy coating and topped with dynamite sauce. I love the creamy texture and the pronounced crunch. They pack a little heat so be careful. I really enjoyed my dinner and the extensive menu begs me to come back and explore more of Zugoi's specialties. read more

Unfortunately, not a good start or end to our visit. Walked in the whole building smelled like raw sewage it was so strong. We were told to sit wherever we wanted. Nobody ever came greet us at our table and we sat for over 15 minutes, we got up and left. I'm leaving a one star review for a specific reason. Poke ramen combined with zugoi sushi and Asian cuisine. The problem with that is you would think that the things they had at the menu at poke would have transferred to zugoi. Wrong, same name of the items you want different product entirely. I did order my usual on the phone like before but got there and got something totally different. If it is going to be a different product you should change the name of the item on the menu. This restaurant has fresh fish! My son and I split the large sashimi boat, and some softshell crab sushi rolls, and a caterpillar roll. We loved it all for flavor, freshness, presentation, and quantity. You get a good return for your money. My other son doesn't like sushi, but he got beef Pad Thai instead. He's a big guy, but he only finished half of the serving he was given. He said it was excellent, and was looking forward to eating the leftovers the next day. We spent $95 plus tip. Came here on a whim for lunch in the middle of the week. Saw a sign outside that read "Lunch Specials" Walked into the front doors and was greeted with an old fishy smell as soon as we entered the doors which was overpowering. Mind you I've been to tons of sushi places and never experienced anything this off putting. We were instructed to pick our own table and handed menus upon sitting in our seats. Really got excited about the amount of lunch specials & the pricing seemed reasonable. Between us we ordered 4 rolls and a bulgogi bento box. Service was ok and the waitress was helpful. As far as the food it was sub par even with the lowest expectations. The rolls were pretty gross to be honest. I felt like they didn't use the proper rice and also the soft shell crab roll didn't smell very fresh. Honestly there are better options in the area. The red flag really should be that the had all the different cuisine here(Japanese, Chinese, Thai & Korean) Lesson learned. read more

Picked up an order of Chicken Terriyaki for my wife and I to take home. They give you a decent amount of chicken with 2 sides and the sauces on the side. The chicken was awful. It had to be one of those frozen packages that had the pregrilled marks on the chicken giving it the illusion of actually being grilled. There was absolutely no flavor and it was rubbery to chew. We were very disappointed since we are trying to find some good Terriyaki chicken in East Mesa having recently moved here from Central Phoenix. So far no luck. On another note, I saw them hand rolling fresh sushi rolls or whatever they were. Those looked like they had promise but I'm not a sushi fan. read more

Wow!! The only positive food items this place has going for it is the soup and salad. The beef fried rice was hard and crunchy and my boyfriends chicken in god noodles tasted like road kill. I don't see how thos place and Zushi is one of the same because Zushi down the road is Fantastic. I don't recommend this place by any means. Mesa keeps disappointing me more and more when it comes to eating out. If you want just ok sushi I would stick to the sister sushi restaurant Zushi here in Mesa or make the drive to Sushi Ave in Gilbert now that place rocks. read more

After seeing some positive reviews of this place as a Japanese/ sushi stop, I decided to take the plunge and plan a full dinner this evening. It was a clear disappointment. After the pot stickers/gyoza (which was good), the quality and freshness of the food and flavors was markedly poor while the cost remained far too high for the level of product offered. Go elsewhere, no matter what Asian cuisine you are looking for. The restaurant is located on the southeast corner of Main and Power roads in Mesa. The internet listing of Zugoi declare this restaurant is a Japanese/Sushi spot, but when you walk in and when you look at the menu, it is clear this place doesn't know what it wants to be. It declares it is Japanese, sushi, Chinese, and Thai at different places on the menu. But this lack of focus translates to less than fresh food and over sugared dishes throughout. Our party tried several items: sushi rolls, gyoza/pot stickers, chicken yakisoba, yellow curry, penang curry, along with the free mizo soup and salad cup. The sushi chosen was called "firecracker," marked as spicy. It was not spicy at all, but it was heavily saturated in a thick sugary teriyaki-like syrup. It was a very disappointing selection. The pot stickers were served hot, and they were actually quite good. The chicken yakisoba was acidic and half warmed. The noodles seemed overcooked, and the chicken meat tasted gummy to the point of having the consistency of tofu- yuck. The penang and yellow curries were likewise disappointing, with poor flavor, spongy chicken, and served half warm. While the food was disappointing, one could possibly understand it if the pricing was discounted from regular Japanese spots, but tlit was the opposite. The pricing was high. The dinner listed above was $110 with tip. Way too high. If the food was stellar, it still would have been steep, but I would have accepted it. In contrast to that the service was quite good. The server was quick, attentive, and accurate. Unfortunately, with all the other issues, good customer service couldn't rescue this restaurant from the deep deficit it was in. The only reason I didn't leave one star for this review is due to the good customer service our table received. read more

Mesa, AZ...you have a great sushi restaurant in your backyard...great selection, fresh and lots of choices. And for those who don't want sushi...great chicken, veggie and noodle options. I had the tempura veggie appetizer, the firecracker and specialty rolls. Amazing! Plus it comes with miso soup and ginger salad. Yes I over ordered but loved sampling...and nothing disappointed.
