I guess we should have been forewarned by our experience here when we pulled into the huge parking lot with many empty businesses until we finally found where this restaurant was. Walked in before the heavy dinner rush and instead of being greeted, we were waved to a table from someone in the back. The menu has sushi, sashimi and cooked entrees. Nothing extra special from what you would expect from a sushi joint. I wanted a sashimi dish but the only one shown on the menu is listed under lunch specials. Pricing was not readily apparent. The sashimi sampler was listed on the paper ordering list but did not say which fish is included. When asking the waitress, she said tuna, salmon, whitefish, and eel?!? Sounded alarming as I have never had raw eel for any sashimi. I asked if it included albacore (which I did not want). She went to ask because she didn't know. When I was told it was part of it, I asked if I could sub out for something else. She said yes, but didn't mention any fee for doing so. I asked her for steamed rice which was an added charge too. We were a little surprised with all the added charges when the bill came. But since their manner of service is to swing by the table and then rush off, we sat for awhile before they noticed we had a question. Normally, the explanation would have sufficed but it seemed they couldn't explain why the upcharge wasn't mentioned earlier during the ordering of food. The fish and sushi here was decent. Nothing to amaze me compared to other places. Even the manager's handling of the questioned bill was unhelpful. We just paid and left. So we definitely won't be back again. I wouldn't recommend the place since there are plenty of better sushi restaurants around that do know how to provide good appreciative service to their customers and have waitstaff who knows the menu and can answer questions about it accurately. read more

Their sushi is well priced for freshness and flavor. The restaurant is on the smaller end; I can see them filling up quickly on the weekends. It seemed clean overall, nothing fancy or upscale. Overall, the food was tasty and came out rather quickly once we ordered. I probably wouldn't dine in on the weekends when I'd expect more traffic, as I'm not confident the service would be very attentive since it already wasn't for a Wednesday evening. They seem to have a happy hour menu, but the start/end times weren't listed nor did the server inform us when we asked if it was happy hour. There are some items listed in the menu that have different prices from the sushi list which is where you'd mark your order. We found when we paid that the price in the menu is what they used (didn't get a chance to ask prior to ordering because the service was spotty). We really enjoyed the food here, and I was happy with the large variety of vegetarian options. The prices were reasonable, and I thought the fried rice was hot & fresh. The vegetarian tempura roll was a solid vegetarian roll. It's really cute and quaint inside, and service was quick. The only complaint I had is that we felt rushed out. We paid and were chatting with friends and they cleared the table around us and kept coming back to take the check and ask if "there was anything else..." The food is beyond delicious and the options are endless. The spicy garlic edamame is a must. Gyoza pan fried can never disappoint here! This place is only worth visiting during happy hour pricing. The food is pretty good, very heavy and rich though. I usually end up with really bad belly aches afterwards. So the pros are cheap and quick, mid tasting. Cons- service, one of the waitresses is the main one and she is very ... dismissive. The other is nice and very helpful. Wow! Not what I expected at all after reading all the positive reviews! We came here around noon and we were the first customers so that was a bit strange I thought. That's never a good sign, right? The server told us about their lunch specials so we decided to go with the spicy tuna roll combo that came with 5 pieces of nigiri: tuna, salmon, white fish, albacore, and shrimp $10.95 and their sashimi combo: 2 pieces of tuna, salmon, and white fish sashimi with 5 pieces of nigiri for $13.95. I thought the prices were so cheap and I realized why as soon as I saw and tasted the food. The fish did not look fresh and none of the fish had any flavor. Sekai is a solid sushi option! I have visited Sekai twice now... and from my pictures, I apparently ordered the Cherry Blossom Specialty Roll both times. This last visit, I also enjoyed some of their edamame and a couple orders of Nigiri (yellowtail and salmon). Five stars for the quality and taste of the sushi... although if you're a gluten-free eater like I am, then you should know that a lot of their rolls have tempura. While I'm sure you could order a gluten-free version of the rolls, I always hesitate to request changes for fear of mistakes and ending up suffering from eating gluten. I believe the only appetizer I could eat was the standard edamame because all of the other apps had gluten. I don't like being the reason that the table is stuck with one appetizer option, so it would be nice if they offered some additional gluten-free appetizers. Service could probably be a bit more attentive, but it was a weekend evening and they were busy, so it's not a big deal... as I understand how that works. I'm sure I will be back again! I took my daughter there for her 10th Birthday today because she had never been to a sushi restaurant and boy did I make a mistake. The restaurant is not kid friendly at all, the staff looked annoyed that I had kids in there. They were very rude and when they served our food, they actually forgot half of our orders including the Birthday Girls order. I had to go up to the front and ask them what was happening. They had simply forgotten to make the order even though we were one of like 3 tables there eating. They didn't even apologize. By the time they made my daughter's order, the rest of our food was gross from just sitting there for 30 minutes. It was a disaster. I cannot emphasize how rude the staff was, the place is run by an older couple and they were actually having a verbal fight in the restaurant for part of our time there, it was tense. Other times the man who I assume is the owner, was just looking over at our table with an angry look like they wanted us to leave. I've been coming here for a year or two now, once every couple weeks at least. The dishes are beautifully plated, tasty, and inexpensive. The environment is very classic for a sushi place, lots of Japanese imagery of course and fun architectural bits inside the store. They have little awnings that you can eat under. The lighting is dimmed and the place is usually quiet, which makes for a relaxing dining experience. On top of all of it, the servers are kind and the food comes fast. It's always a great experience eating here, and I recommend it to anyone within earshot. read more

Oh my, we found a hidden gem! After reading reviews, my husband and I decided to try this spot while we had some time to kill. We walked in and there were only about 4 or 5 tables taken. Perfect! Walked in at 8:41pm, took about 45 seconds for someone to greet us. There's no host stand so we stood in the entrance. One of the servers walked up and greeted us and let us know that last call was at 8:50. She then sat at the closest table. She said she would give us a couple with the menus and then she would come back and take our order. The restaurant was pretty full but also pretty quiet. In terms of happy hour and lunch time deals, Sekai Sushi is unbeatable. Not only is the seafood fresh, but they truly bring on the portion sizes compared to other sushi locations. Located in the same plaza as Joann's, there was plenty of parking given the lack of other establishments in the area. Although their takeout is reliable, I love the complementary miso soup with dining in. Service is always fast and food comes out within 10 minutes. =ORDERED= *Miso Soup: heavy on the miso flavoring, leading to a saltier start. Amazing for the winter cold. *HH Nigiri: count me in for $3 nigiri. Each order came with two massive pieces. The ratio was skewed towards rice but the cut of fish was still generous. *HH Spicy Ramen: personally wouldn't order this again but I appreciated the attempt to elevate instant noodles. There was an egg mixed with tons of onion and carrots. Filling although not the best tasting. *HH Gyoza: hot appetizer that came with six pieces. Crispy, yet juicy. Good complement to our raw dishes. *HH Aloha Roll: one of the best rolls I've ever had, and for only $7-amazing! The filling was spicy tuna and topped with seared albacore and onion ginger dressing. The dressing was subtle and neutralized the spicy tuna with its acidity. *HH Shrimp Tempura Roll: beautiful wrapped roll packed with imitation crab, sliced cucumber, and crispy shrimp tempura. Not only was the batter light, it was still hot from the fryer. *Sekai Nigiri Combo: a lunch special that included tuna, salmon, whitefish, albacore, shrimp and a choice between a California, spicy tuna and rainbow roll. I opted for the rainbow roll pairing and it was well made. Good filling to rice ratio and the fish was fresh. Out of the nigiri, the whitefish was my least favorite since it was a bit cold and tough. My favorite was the albacore as it was barely seared, melt in the mouth and balanced with a yuzu finish. *Deluxe Sushi: came with a tuna maki roll and 8 pieces of chef's nigiri. The nigiri was different from those from happy hour and lunch as the ratio of rice to fish was more balanced. Personally I found the seafood quantity to be less and flavors more muted with this set. The maki roll was the most disappointing as the inside was predominantly rice. *Scallops Nigiri: the baby scallop variety. The integrity was disappointing as the dampness soaked through the seaweed. The sauce used to flavor the scallop was overwhelming, being overly sour and wasabi forward. Despite some of the shortcomings of the more expensive items, I've yet to be disappointed from the sushi options during happy hour and lunch. One of my favorite cheap eats in Gilbert and I hope to see more enjoying Sekai's offerings at all times of the day. read more

Not good at all. Had some chashu ramen and scallop sushi roll and the scallops were very off. Way too fishy and didn't taste fresh at all. We both love scallops and know what they're supposed to taste like and that was definitely very off. The ramen was underseasoned and one note, the noodles were more like instant ramen noodles rather than what they should be like. The menu was pretty large, with lots of different sushi rolls included. We ordered four rolls between the two of us and they were excellent. I had the veggie tempura roll, my husband had a California roll and we each had a shrimp tempura roll. The food came out relatively quickly and we could tell the food was fresh.
