I completely forgot that I had always wanted to try this Gilbert location until someone had invited me to their birthday celebration. I got my usual go-to at Masa Sushi: Salmon Love Combo for $23.95. The Norwegian marketing campaign in the 1980s that introduced parasite-free farmed salmon helped kickstart salmon being eaten raw and for that I am grateful. Salmon, with hamachi/yellowtail being a close second, is one of my favorite fishes to eat raw and at Masa, it's decent! It was a Galbi Teppanyaki Combo. It came with fried rice, short ribs (galbi), and tuna rolls. It hit the spot. We really like this place. It definitely has a Japanese bar vibe. There are lanterns and lots of Japanese parasols hanging from the ceiling. It definitely is a warmer, more colorful, slightly darker lit place than you'd think in the middle of the day in a strip mall restaurant. Its cozy! There are some likely Japanese chotchkes (like a little daruma) throughout. The coolest thing, though, is what had to be thousands of photos of people who have come here to dine and celebrate. The walls are covered! The menu had quite a few good choices--bentos, boats, platters, and lots more. I have been coming to Masa for years! Masa is perfect for a quick lunch out and to avoid the downtown Gilbert crowds. Service can be hit or miss, it seems as though they typically just have one server and one person making sushi. This was the case for our most recent visit so it took a bit for our food to come out and I did have to ask for the check. Masa is a cozy little spot and the sushi is always consistent, love that they provide complimentary miso soup & salad. My first time dining here this past weekend. We typically order through delivery. The experience was quite good. It's a mom and pop located in Gilbert, would say the food was very delicious. The price was right as well. We ordered mostly sashimi, hand roll each and toro nigiri. For me, likely the better raw sushi I have had in the closet vicinity. I always drive by this place and have kept telling myself I will stop by. Well the day finally came and we made a little visit on Friday evening. We were greeted as we walked in but waited a few minutes to be seated. There was one big group, a couple smaller groups, and there were only two waitresses running around. We sat down, ordered some waters, and looked over the menu. We ordered: Two orders of Shrimp Tempura One order of stuffed jalapeños One midnight roll One Mexican roll One crunch roll Miso soup and salad The miso soup and salad came out right away and they were both good. The miso soup was not hot enough though and would've tasted better if it had been! The shrimp tempura and stuffed jalapeños were the bombbbbbbb. The tempura was crispy and hot! The stuffed jalapenos were a creamy goodness and they had a very nice kick to them. Our crunch roll and Mexican roll came out not too long after and we enjoyed them both. The Mexican roll had so much flavor and was very filling. The crunch roll was another fave and we wanted moreeee. The midnight roll was baked and it was finally dropped off when we were done with the other two. The midnight roll was unfortunately a hard pass for us as it was very mushy and left us with a gross aftertaste. We gave it two tries and nope, its still a pass so we left it there... Service was very slow, our waters were never refilled, and it took forever to get our check. The servers were friendly but they definitely seemed stressed. Didn't see a "hiring" sign up front but they definitely need the extra help. We were thanked and said "bye" to from the cooks and servers as we walked out the door which was nice. We have been here several times. They are efficient and the food is good. Last night we called around 7:50 to see if they had room for a party of 3 and they told us they would by the time we got there. When we walked in they already had the table set for us which was awesome. I ordered hot green tea, seaweed salad and the vegetarian combo. The combo was delicious. Unfortunately the seaweed salad was frozen in spots, most likely because they were closing in an hour and didn't have any out. I asked for a new one and they brought it but it was still frozen in some spots. They took it off the bill and took it back. Not a big deal at all, I'm sure it was just because of the time. Stopped by after going to the bike shop a few doors down. It was packed ar 5:15 PM. I ordered the yellow tail sashimi. Perfect temperature and delicious, with a delightful texture. Would absolutely order the gyoza again--finely minced, tender pork. The mixed tempura had onion, sweet potato, zucchini, and shrimp. It was twice the size I expected and super yummy. Although the veggies were served in the traditional tempura way, the shrimp was fried in a different kind of batter, more like a panko. It was ok..and I prefer the traditional tempura style like they cooked the veggies. I will def be back! read more

My family and I used to come here very often ages ago! Life happens and we just haven't came back but we had dinner here the other day and it did not disappoint! We ordered the Seaweed Salad, Galbi Teppanyaki Bento with Spicy Tuna, Fuji Roll without cream cheese and Energy Roll. They also still serve complimentary miso soup and side salad! Everything was amazing. The salmon on the Fuji Roll was fresh and thick. The Energy Roll actually has eel on it! A lot of places would have rolls with eel and give very minimal but not here. The Spicy Tuna didn't taste fishy and had a sesame sweet flavor, thank goodness! Service was great and food came out quick considering there was only 1 server and multiple tables. We have been meaning to try this place for a while now and finally did tonight. It was a great start but it definitely fizzled out by the end. The food was yummy, but the service was very spotty. I loved the atmosphere and their decorations were great. Our waitress was good at the beginning but we struggled with getting her attention to order more drinks, and then had to flag her down for dessert and the check. They also have a lot of advertisements for happy hour, but it is nothing I would call happy hour and is just standard menu pricing. We had their gyoza, edamame, and two sushi rolls. This has always been our go to spot for sushi. The service and food is always delicious and quick. I will say though I'm not sure if it was pre Covid, but they used to give you a nice little sliced apples and orange dessert with a chocolate stick at the end of your meal which I always thought was cool and set this place apart from other sushi spots, but all this to say they no longer do this anymore. Let's talk about the Mesa Maki, I picked this one well I haven't had it before and I wanted something different. Inside: avocado, spicy tuna, imitation crab (I asked), cucumber and tempura shrimp rolled with green lettuce, wrapped with soy paper and finished with sesame seeds! This was refreshing light, carb friendly? No rice, except for that little rice paper gem that Adds a extra crunch level! Between the time I was done, until a server came over was about 10 min, they were talking, one was training the new server. I get it, place is mixed with just a touch of uniqueness with the polorid pictures around the walls...thousands? Celebrations? My partner and I visited this place out of curiosity and it was absolutely excellent. The service was great- they were always punctual, attentive, and not too overbearing. Plus, the staff was very welcoming. I love their collection of figurines outside the sushi bar as well, giving it a personable ambiance. The food was absolutely amazing and quality. Best of all, it was for a great price! Definitely will be coming back here when my partner and I have some throw money and some time together for dinner another night. Had lunch here today and there were 2 tables other than ours that had customers (so not at all a busy arena) but the server seemed not interested in serving our table ( 3 of us) from getgo . Probably some of the most affordable sushi in the area. Not only was happy hour all day, everyday (except for Sunday) but their menu was pages long with innovative rolls and rice based dishes. However, the fish quality was variable and their tuna was notably bad. Parking was quite easy and they do take out orders well. Despite making several large orders, Masa Sushi has managed to always complete them early. Although their website mentioned fancy to go boxes, my fish came in regular Styrofoam containers. Albeit not fancy, I preferred my sushi orders to be accurate which they were. =ORDERED= *Chirashi: came with 15 assorted sashimi pieces plus a piece of crab and shrimp over sushi rice. Sushi rice was seasoned well despite being on the mushier side. Extremely cost effective for such a variety and the sashimi was sliced thickly. Yellowtail, albacore and salmon were my favorite cuts while the tuna was by far the worst. Tuna was inedible and so fishy I spat it out immediately. The snapper had a strange texture that disintegrated in my mouth. The crab and shrimp smelled funny. *Platinum Sashimi Platter: came with 40 assorted sashimi pieces with two bowls of rice. Considering the 20 piece came with one bowl and the 30 piece had two, I wished this platter had three bowls instead of two. Notably this was regular white rice with furikake seasoning instead of sushi rice. The sashimi pieces were similarly thicker but also shorter. Once again the salmon and yellowtail were the best but we were disappointed in how small the pieces were. *Large Sashimi + Sushi Combo: came with 9 assorted sashimi pieces, 6 nigiri, and a choice of a tuna, salmon, albacore, or yellowtail roll. I chose the salmon roll and I was impressed by how filled the regular roll was. Not only was the rice stellar but the nori had a pleasant sesame flavor too. The sashimi pieces were the smallest in this order. The snapper nigiri was on the harder side and the albacore was very cold--almost still frozen. Although the regular salmon roll was my favorite of everything I tried, I didn't find the combo to be as worthwhile considering it was similarly priced as the platter. Personally would stick to their regular rolls and happy hour deals. The yellowtail and salmon were consistently good while all the other fish were mediocre to inedible. Pricing was excellent but note that the variety came with gems and duds. read more

Stopped in to Masa for the first time ever and I'm so glad we did! The atmosphere, service, and food is all fantastic! They have an awesome happy hour special that seems to last the entire day and the staff are all so welcoming and hospitable. This quickly has become our family's favorite sushi spot in town! All our food came with a complimentary soy and salad. Loved the salad and the dressing but since Our family isn't big on soup I can't speak to that. We ordered the half n half chicken teriyaki with cali roll, the cali + crunch half n half rolls, the tiger roll and the spider roll and loved it all! The dressing was so good, I wanted to drink the remaining at the bottom of the bowl, but refrained. My husband got the bulgoki lunch bento box with: tempura, bulgoki, california roll and crunch roll. Everything was good and the bulgoki was seasoned to perfection. The rolls were perfectly rolled! I got the combination roll plate that had: monkey balls, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura and crunch roll. All of the rolls were good. I was surprised by the monkey balls because, I've never had mushrooms packed with spicy tuna, then deep fried. It definitely tantalized my tastebuds.
