My husband and I had a lovely dinner at Jao Sua. They were packed on the Saturday night we went, so we put our names down for a ~25 minute wait. No problem, Level 1 Arcade Bar is across the street! I hadn't been to the restaurant it previously was, but my husband attested it was remodeled with the addition of the bar. The ambiance was cozy and cute. We ordered: -Braised Short Rib Curry ($32)- Tender, melt off the bone short rib. -Wok-Charred Drunken Noodles with chicken ($18)- Good wok hai flavor. Not a fan of the green peppercorns/texture. -Jao Sua Duck Rolls ($16)- A unique item I haven't seen on other Thai menus. Served cold with plum hoisin sauce that is savory with a tang. Probably my favorite item of the bunch! -Shishito ($12)- Good, standard shishito peppers seasoned with salt. -Curry puff ($14)- Flaky curry puffs. I enjoyed the sauce it was served with, but also dipped them into the duck roll sauce. The total was $92 for the two of us, not including the beers husband ordered. Overall everything was tasty, seasoned well, and delicious. My biggest qualm is, everything was a bit pricy, some especially considering the portion size, such as $14 for 3 curry puffs (~$4.66/each). Jao Sua has a gorgeous interior and the food presentation is stunning! I got Shrimp Tempura Roll and Mango Sticky Rice. Both were tasty and very pretty. Prices are a tad high for a downtown lunch spot, though. Without a lunch special, I could see that being a tough sell for the regular lunch crowd. My only heartbreak? They took my dish before I finished all my ginger. The server was so fast I didn't even have time to save the rest of my ginger stash. Let me live! Jao Sua shot up to my favorite Thai eatery in Arizona. I was blown away by all aspects of our time here. Situated in downtown Mesa with ample parking never far, Jao Sua fits right in with the eccentric array of businesses lining the block. Upon walking in, you're greeted by many smiles and the tasteful selection of decor. Their bathroom is another testament to their great attention to detail: well maintained and smelling absolutely amazing. We started off with the curry puff and Tom Yum soup. The puffs were slightly on the dry side, but nice and crispy and both the pickled veggies and curry sauce were phenomenal pairings. The Thai tea came with Thai tea ice cubes, an amazing touch so the flavor of the tea was never compromised through our dining experience. For mains, the Yaowarat noodles and braised short rib curry were both highly recommended by the waitstaff. Both came in just-right portion sizes packed with flavor. The Yaowarat noodles incorporate a medley of flavors and is texture-forward (crunchy, bouncy, airy) through multiple components. The braised short rib curry was not as heavy as we expected and the short rib was very tender. Nailing all components of an outstanding business on the head here, Jao Sua is very much worth a visit. read more

This delightful restaurant is under new ownership and has pulled out all the stops! The food is delicious and the menu has so many great choices- some of which were new to me. My daughter had the beautifully plated pumpkin curry which was as delicious as it was beautiful. Another member of our group had fantastic crab fried rice, while sushi is also available and one of the children has California rolls. I finished with Tom Yum Goong soup. It was delicious with shrimp and mushrooms in a lemon grass broth. The service to our outdoor table was great. It was important to our server/ owner that we were satisfied. Beautiful spot on Main Street in Downtown Mesa. Had to try and so happy we did. Love the duo of Thai and sushi options along with a nice cocktail menu. We tried the duck rolls (Wow) Jao Sua Roll (wow again) and the Rib Curry plate (WOWWW). What an incredible dinner! My family and I came here on a Saturday evening, and the restaurant was pretty busy. I would say that if you're coming to eat here on a weekend day, make a reservation, since it is a pretty small restaurant. The service overall was a little bit slow; it took them some time to take our order and greet us, but they recently opened and still trying to get their bearings straight. We decided to do family style to try more things, and everything we ate was so good! If there's one thing I would highly recommend, it would be the Drunken Noodles. They are so flavorful and cooked to perfection. That was probably my favorite dish that we had. Crab Rangoon portions are a little small for the price, but the filling was good and not totally cream cheese heavy. I would definitely come here again! The Valley just got an excellent new Thai restaurant! Everything we ordered at Jao Sua was fantastic. We started with the kanom jeeb (chicken and shrimp dumplings). The dumplings, topped with crispy garlic and served with a mildly sweet sauce, tasted like something you'd get from a random stall in Bangkok. Next was the tuna nam tok. A lot of Thai restaurants in the US miss the balance on dishes like nam tok and laab. They can end up too sweet, too salty, or not sour enough. This one was spot on. The flavors were really well balanced, and the tuna was fresh. For entrees, we got the Bangkok pad thai and crab fried rice. I'm a big fan of pad thai with thinner rice noodles, and this place delivers. The crab fried rice was probably the highlight of the night. It had great wok flavor and big lumps of crab throughout. The Thai seafood sauce on the side adds a nice burst of flavor, but the fried rice is already good enough on its own. We finished with the bua loy. The bua loy itself was great, but we thought the coconut ice cream was way too sweet. That was really the only thing we didn't like. The space is gorgeous and thoughtfully done, and the service was excellent too. Jao Sua is a great addition to downtown Mesa. We'll definitely be back! read more

I've returned to try additional items on the menu, and they did NOT disappoint. Most of what I've had here is really yummy. I was recently impressed and satisfied by the pineapple fried rice - which also gets points for it's tropical aesthetic presentation; lovely mix of sweet and savory especially with the pineapple chunks and Chinese sausage. The Yaowarat Noodle was good but not mindblowing, we ordered it mild and it still packed a punch so I don't recommend choosing spicy if you are sensitive to that. It also had crab, greens, and peanuts but the whole dish just tasted like the mild (not so mild) sauce. I've also noticed that this place has gotten quite popular, so if you have a larger group, definitely make a reservation. All staff I've encountered is kind and attentive. This low key restaurant is easy to miss, but it is absolutely gorgeous inside. I loved the decor and ambiance. The menu is quite unique. It's absolutely rooted in authentic Thai, but with some Chinese flair (present in some dishes more than other). Highlights: - noodle texture was amazing, reminded me of noodles I had in Thailand - the crab noodles I had in particular had amazing flavor and GENEROUS crab. Huge chunks! - shrimp donuts were super unique. Savory, and reminiscent of crab claw puffs you would have at dim sum - the staff were amazing and super friendly Slight misses: - the fish portion was generous, but I found the tamarind flavor to be a little lacking. The fish also seemed slightly overcooked as the smaller pieces were a little dried out and tough tasting - the wings were a bit small and I wasn't a fan of how they were cut. I'm so happy I get to be the first review. I'm going to spoil the review by saying, good lord it was so good. I visited Thailand just a couple months ago and ate everything I could get my hands on. The food there was incredible. Fast forward to now, I've been craving an authentic Thai meal to bring back the memories. This place perfectly reproduced some of my favorite meals. First, we started with a papaya salad. Every papaya salad I had in Thailand was beyond spicy, so when I was asked if I wanted it Thai spicy I had to say yes. It did not disappoint. I was practically crying after a few bites, but the flavor was so good. I've had a few papaya salads in the states, but a lot of the time they don't add the fish sauce which makes it taste slightly different. That was not the case here, it was perfect Next we tried the tofu tempura. It was so crispy but each bite was also light and fluffy. And the sauce added great flavor. You get quite a few but I blinked and they were gone. I couldn't stop myself from scarfing them down. I had the pad Thai for my entree. I am VERY picky about pad Thai. I ordered pad Thai from nearly every restaurant I ate at in Thailand. And I get it at every Thai restaurant I eat at in the states. I know my favorites and if a Thai place doesn't have good pad Thai, even if everything else is great, there's a good chance I won't eat there again. I genuinely worry when I have the first bite because it makes or breaks a Thai restaurant for me. I love Main Street and all the great food there so I really wanted this place to make my favorites list. And fortunately for me the pad Thai was superb. The sauce was sweet and tangy, it had perfectly cooked noodles, and there was plenty of chicken. I cannot wait to order this pad Thai again. No more driving to phoenix for a good pad Thai. My partner ordered the khoa soi. I had a couple bites and really enjoyed it, it was so flavorful. She said her favorite khao soi was in Chang Mai Thailand and that this one tasted almost identical. She was practically crying when we left because she had been craving it so much. Finally, we finished the night with the mango sticky rice. No notes, it was delicious. Food so delicious we forgot to take a pre-photo but as you can tell DEMOLISHED. Good grief I've never had better Thai food than this. I'm in awe, I cannot wait to bring everyone I know here. We had the duck rolls; the crab rangoons (like really a hand made wonton wrapper?? Didn't feel or taste store bought to me) for apps. The lychee martini is ridiculously delicious and strong as it should be. Also pad see u, curry short ribs, green curry, and the wagyu kra pow. Everything was utterly fantastic!!! Well, dayum. My new lovely lady and I went to downtown Mesa for a concert at the Mesa Arts Center (a great venue, by the way) and needed to find some grub before hand. My sciatica and general sloth prevented us from walking too far away and that made for a happy accident. We came across Jao Sua, which seems to occupy the same place as a previous Thai restaurant - although I could either be misremembering or a victim of the multiverse in action. Anyhow, this one is better. Nice vibe and very comfortable. A little loud but comfy and also romantic lighting, which worked out great because I wanted to stare into my lovely lady's beautiful blue eyes. Of course, before long all I could stare at was her pineapple. No not that, get your mind out of the gutter. She ordered the Thai fried rice which came served in a pineapple half. It was tasty and an absolutely stunning presentation. Same for the spring roll and my dish, which was a braised beef short rib curry, that I think was a beef Massaman curry in disguise. No tap beers, but some Asian beers in bottles and I saw a few nice looking cocktails around the joint. Good service, decent prices, and a delightful and romantic option in downtown Mesa. I called ahead to make a reservation and they had told me that there was going to be a big party and recommended just a time 30 minutes later which I appreciated because I was coming from across town so I could accommodate my travel time! When I got there, I love the ambience. It's gorgeous in there & the hostess greeted me with a smile. They gave us plenty time to look over the menu. It is a bigger menu, which I like. This place popped up on my husband's foodie algorithm on Facebook and I'm soooo glad it did. We maybe over ordered, but the entire menu looked amazing and we wanted to try it all. We started with the Curry Puffs and the Salted Pepper Fried Calamari. I honestly couldn't choose which one I liked more. The puffs came with the most delicious curry sauce and I'm weak for calamari in general. The sauce with the calamari was also phenomenal. Then for entrees I got the Braised Short Rib Curry, my husband got the Yaowarat Noodles and we split the Spicy Tuna Roll. The curry was absolute heaven -- the short rib melted right off the bone. The bite of hubby's noodles I had was wonderfully spicy and flavorful. And the sushi was honestly a more generous portion then I think either of us were expecting. By this point, both of us had stuffed ourselves silly... yet he still ordered two desserts. The first one was the Bau Loy with Coconut Ice Cream, which neither of us knew what that was.... but it was great! The cold ice cream with the warm rice flour balls were a delightful combo and it wasn't too sweet (which are our fave kind of desserts). The second one was their Mango Sticky Rice, and that's just always the comforting end of meal hug that I look forward to. We ended the meal uncomfortably full and unexpectedly elated to have this superb Thai restaurant in the heart of downtown Mesa. We will be back. Probably tomorrow. read more

What a shame that the previous owners are gone! They were very nice, considerate, accommodating all while preparing food to your liking. These new folks are rude, uncaring, they don't check on your food with you, it's becomes clear very early on that they are inconvenienced by those darn customers. Look elsewhere for your Thai food. This is no longer the place it once was. How sad that they did not take the previous owners advice. That being, take care of your clients or they will go away. One visit will confirm that. We just tried this place for the first time. We've been longtime customers Nunthaporn and when she retired and sold to PP Thai and sushi we tried them twice and it really didn't compare to Nunthaporn so we never went back. Back to this review it was really good and comparable to Nunthaporns The atmosphere is nice. The food was beautiful the way they presented and it tasted wonderful. Plus they brought back a lunch special, which is very good for the area and that restaurant. She used to have one years ago and it really was a good value and we always went there for lunch. I hope they get some business because it's worthy of a try. It was delicious and we will definitely be back. We moved far so it's quite a trek for us in so it's gotta be good. It's beautiful inside and the bar looks great. We get seated right away whenever we go and the service is amazing. The drinks are great. The food has been ok. I love the fresh roll but the sauce is hot and has no peanut taste which is why I use to got to the restaurant before it changed. The wagu rice was ok but the meat was in small pieces and over cooked. The shrimp donuts are good. The food is always ok not great but the prices are high so you expect better. What a gem! Took a group of colleagues here and none of us had been before. I am so glad we came! The food was excellent! The duck rolls were a standout- so moist, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. We also loved the larb, dumplings, spring rolls, crab fried rice, short-rib curry and papaya salad. Drunken noodles and garlic black pepper beef for entrees, also delicious. Remember, Thai spice is way hotter than the usual "hot". Ordered medium spice and it was almost too hot for even my husband who has habanero everything. The mango sticky rice was probably the best I've ever had. Downtown Mesa ; 3rd Thai restaurant in as many years at 17 W Main St Mesa, AZ 85201. Nunthaporn was okay but I wound up never returning, never tried the 2nd restaurant that was called PP thai and sushi. I hope it's latest incarnation of Jao Sua is here to stay! Apps were Curry Puffs and the Salted Pepper Fried Calamari. The curry puffs were flaky and mild, great vegetarian option to start for those inclined. The Calamari I liked even more, relatively light batter but with a super punchy sauce flooded with chilies, fish sauce, and way more lime than usual ( in a great, truly great way ). Entrees were Braised Short Rib Curry and the Yaowarat Noodles. The curry leaned sweet but was still beautiful rich flavors. The beef shredded effortlessly but still put up the right amount of resistance as you chewed through it, and the carrots + potatoes were a gentler foil to the rest of the intensity going on. The Yaowarat were wide flat egg noodles with crab as the protein, with simply steamed bok choy as the quiet counterpoint to the crazy flavors going on elsewise. Thai hot actually meant thai hot, and I was suffering in bliss as the chili oil wrapped noodle, crab, and leaf in a whirlwind of pain and flavor. Despite this description this was actually my least favorite dish, but I mean that in the sense that my index finger is probably my least favorite digit, but I still don't want to go through life with out mr. index or miss Yaowarat. We concluded with the desserts, first of which was the Bau Loy with Coconut Ice Cream. The bracingly cold ice cream floated above a sweet warm soup with tapioca ( maybe? ) balls drifting along, and everything lathered with the cream that accompanies Mango Sticky rice. So far as the actual Mango Sticky Rice is concerned, it was exactly as expected without any surprises, but a final testimonial to the excellence of this chef and hopefully future Mesa downtown culinary institution. Quick warning, we went on the 2nd day of their soft opening and only thing available to drink yesterday was water. They literally got their liquor license yesterday + imagining their real opening sometime towards end of the month. If visiting proceed with expectations of great food, a little slower timing, and completely unknown liquid refreshment availability outside of water. read more

We ate here today, the food was great. The atmosphere and decor are nice, too. We arrived around noon (Sunday) and it wasn't too busy, but it got busy as we ate--was full when we left. I had the yellow curry with chicken and it was excellent. The medium spice was just right, the chicken was tender, veggies cooked perfectly. My daughter had the chicken fried rice and definitely enjoyed it and the fun expandable straws they gave her with her soda. The rest of our table really enjoyed their food, as well, and the waitress and staff were very friendly. Absolutely worth checking out if you're in DT Mesa looking for Thai food. read more

When we raised a concern about one of the shrimp in our dish not being deveined they addressed it right away and offered to make it right by taking it off of our bill. They also offered us a complimentary dessert which was incredible. The owner stopped by our table to speak with us asking how our meal was. You could tell his passion for the food. He was also very kind to my young son. Which as a dad I always appreciate.
