My husband & I cannot get enough of this place. The brussel sprouts!!!, bacon wrapped shrimp, any of the steaks and the mango shaved ice dessert is worth every penny. Also, I have to mention they have the absolute dream team here at the Gilbert location. read more

First off, the old fashioned and brussel sprouts are worth the trip. However, we were not impressed by our waiter. We had never been in before and were not offered an explanation of the menu, and barely a cumulative of 10 words throughout our dining experience. I feel like we could've gotten more out of our dinner. The food was good, but the service ruined it for my husband and I. read more

Shimogamo - Old Fashioned - Japanese Near Me - Gilbert, Arizona

Offers indoor and outdoor patio seating. Good food and service. Popular and busy, so reservations are recommended. I had their set lunch which included your choice of one hot dish, your choice of one sushi roll, miso soup and a small salad for one low price. My salmon teriyaki hot dish with white sticky rice was good. The spicy tuna roll was smallish but okay. My spicy edamame appetizer was delicious. read more

We've been here a few times since they opened so their menu changed but still good to me. The staff was friendly and helpful when deciding what to order. Each time we came here, we've only had yakitori skewers, sushi, and sashimi. The other food in the menu like the cold or hot dishes will be for another time. This place was busy every time we came so reservations would be a good idea. The last time we were here, we ordered O-toro sashimi (one of the specials when we went), Kashiwa skewers, Wagyu BBQ Flight, Hamachi Lime Roll, Aburi Salmon Roll, Surf N Turf Roll, and this Maiko 75 along with the Kamogawa Breeze for drinks. The O-toro sashimi was delicious to us and would order it again. The Kashiwa skewers were good and the two spices that came with it complemented. The Wagyu BBQ Flight came on this hot cube and presentation-wise looked good and the wagyu was delicious with the Ginger Garlic Soy and Japanese BBQ sauces. The Hamachi Lime Roll was okay to me, the Aburi Salmon Roll was good, and same with the Surf N Turf Roll. The Maiko 74 and the Kamogawa Breeze were both tasty and I would order them again. This place was good and we'll be back for more yakitori, sushi, and sashimi in the future. read more

My friends wanted sushi yesterday and the Chandler location was booked so we gave this new location a try. They only had sushi bar seats available. It was 7pm on a Saturday evening and they were pretty busy. The interior is clean, nicer and bigger than the other location. The hostess, waiter, and sushi chefs were all nice and friendly. Our waiter was pretty knowledgeable of all the food and drinks on the menu. He was attentive and checked on us often. Now the food... I gotta say we were a bit disappointed and expected much better. My order: 161.69 Kiyamachi Crawl cocktail $16 Shimogamo Shooter $12 Yellowtail Crudo $22 Premium Sashimi $98 Kizami Wasabi $2 Friends order: ~198 2 Sakes $12 ea 2 Kirin Light $20 ea Smoked Skirt Steak $35 Premium Sashimi $98 The good: My cocktail wasn't bad. It was strong for sure. The Shimogamo Shooter was good but the uni piece on top was tiny! The Hamachi Crudo was delicious. Quality of the hamachi for the crudo and shooter was fresh and good. The steak was soft and tender and paired well with the sauce it came with. We all agreed the crudo and steak were our favorites for the evening. The bad: The Premium Assorted Sashimi should've been the highlight of the night but we were very disappointed in the quality. You get 3 pieces each of 5 different fishes: o-toro, bluefin tuna, shima aji, umi masu & kinmedai. While the presentation was nice, each piece of sashimi, except the bluefin tuna, was chewy!! High quality fish should not be chewy, especially o-toro. If we're paying $98, we expect high quality. It definitely wasn't worth it. My friends agreed. I usually get uni at every sushi place I go to but not this time. It was wayyyy over priced here. $48 for 2 nigiris or $96 for the sashimi. Pass! Not sure if we'll be back but we won't be getting the Premium Assorted Sashimi again read more

I've only been told about this place 1 million times. Finally managed to stop in for sushi and was not disappointed. The restaurant itself is quite small so if you plan on eating here, I strongly strongly recommend getting a reservation. We sat on the patio. There was six of us. I don't know if this would be a great place if you had a very large group. All the sushi choices were great. My daughter also had the teriyaki salmon skewers, which she really enjoyed. read more

Arrived just after opening on 8/9/26, with high expectations. Lots of staff, but they were very slow to wait on us. Ordered a California Roll to start, and my wife and I both thought the grocery store version was better. My wife ordered a Chicken Teriyaki bowl, and I ordered a Salmon Teriyaki bowl, both with Miso soup and salad included. The soup was tasteless, the salad had a strange-tasting dressing (not the usual Thousand Island type), and I had to request Teriyaki sauce for my Salmon bowl had none. Needless to say, we won't be back! read more

My husband and I went to Shimogamo with some good friends, and overall, it was a really enjoyable experience. It was so refreshing to find a sushi spot that offers great vegetarian and vegan options. I tried the vegan roll, and while it was a bit on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor and really hit the spot. My husband went with the citrus roll. It was an interesting choice for him, but he said he probably wouldn't order it again. Our friend got the teriyaki bowl, which came out way before everyone else's rolls, and that felt a little off, but it wasn't a huge deal. The atmosphere was really nice, and the service was friendly and attentive. We were impressed with how welcoming the staff was. Despite a little hiccup with the timing of the dishes, we really enjoyed our meal, and we'd definitely come back! read more

I will usually find myself at the Chandler location but I stopped in after realizing the Gilbert location also was doing a restaurant week special. The food and drinks were spectacular, my favorite is the black cod, I'll need to order some rice with it the next time. The service was great, we got seated at the bar in front of all the chefs cooking and it was fun to see how the cogs spun. The decor looked upscale but it also felt very noisy and busy. There is a mood and charm missing from this location that I like about the original Chandler location. There were a few menu items that caught my attention and I'll return when it's not restaurant week for all the yakiniku that I don't usually get. read more

A newish restaurant that has come to the heart of Gilbert. A must try! Japanese inspired foods with a rich cultural history. The vibe was Asian influenced. Book your reservation ahead of time, as seating is limited inside. They do have patio seating, which is what we chose and didn't have to wait very long on a busy Friday night. We ordered some sushi to start along with the garlic shrimp udon and my husband got the spicy beef miso, both so delicious. Great service, wait staff very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu options. They have a QR code to scan the menu. Great place to try out for next date night! read more

Delicious and fresh food. Great atmosphere, clean and convenient. Always consistent with the food!

Love the vibe when you walk in- clean, modern, airy. Quite different than I remember the chandler location being! The service was incredible, from friendly hosts to great servers and bartenders, the night was filled with calm, cool, kind people. Shout out to Christine the bartender- she was great! For drinks my husband got the waygu fat washed old fashioned and it was so smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommend! I got the secrets of kyo-tango and it was amazing. no bite from the alcohol- so smooth and refreshing and a little sweet! for food we got the oysters to start- I love a small oyster with no grit and thats exactly what we got. Sweet oyster with tangy, spicy sauces. the chili ponzu was our fav! We shared a few sushi rolls- The Big and Spicy packed a punch! That soy jalapeño had a lingering heat that was delicious but powerful. The zen roll was the most mild of the three we got- the shisito didn't come through for me, but it was very Zen- smooth and yummy The Hamachi Lime roll was my favorite- not a lot of spice, but good flavors, very smooth and balanced - all around enjoyable. We really enjoyed our time at shimogamo! I would highly recommend. We sat at the bar and loved that experience. The one constructive feedback I have was the rolls weren't rolled tight. Some of them fell apart slightly as you picked them up, but the flavor and presentation was amazing! read more

I wish I liked this place a lot more than I do, but alas I do not. Went for Arizona Restaurant Week and ordered a bunch of dishes from the regular menu and some cocktails to try. I will break down my experience with the good, the bad, and the ugly: The good: plenty of parking, beautiful restaurant, easy reservation system and was seated immediately, sushi and cooked fish was all fresh and flavorful. Authentic Japanese. The bad: portions are tiny for the price, cocktails are $17 and are laughably weak and watered down. The ugly: we were approached out of nowhere by a waiter who upsold us a dish we didn't order by telling us an extensive story and that it was an extra made by the chef from their $180 omakase menu. It was $16 for two raw pieces of shrimp with shrimp heads and some foam on it....it was weird I didn't like it. I've never been upsold on a dish at a restaurant and pressured to order something I otherwise wouldn't. I think they just didn't want to waste the fish since we were their in the evening. Overall would I go back? Maybe- I liked how authentic the sushi rolls were so maybe I'd get takeout. read more

I know this place gets great reviews but really not impressed. Vibe is meh and sushi rice was softer than I prefer and fell apart. Service was great but a little too fast when you want to enjoy your dinner with family/friends and they clear everything as soon as you finish it feeling very rushed. We went early on Christmas Eve and were planning to have an enjoyable dinner but we were in and out on like 30 minutes. read more

The absolute best Sushi in Gilbert. Must have ice desert. Cant wait to go back. Sushi is so fresh and the Kobe is amazing.

They had quite a few customers inside. Despite that, the noise levels were fine today. I could hear my companion and vice versa. No music playing, which is best because it sometimes contributes to poor noise levels. We had the double salmon roll with spicy salmon / salmon / asparagus / cucumber / green onion / salted green onion sauce. I didn't think it tasted spicy. It did feel oily since they must have used oil in the salted green onion sauce. Otherwise, I thought it tasted pretty delicious. The hamachi lime roll with yellowtail / spicy tuna / cucumber / spicy mayo / shichimi lime / serrano / chives sounded good but we didn't get it this time. We also got the shimogamo curry with the japanese curry / steamed white rice / pork katsu. They also had the option of choice of chicken katsu. The pork was a little pink but moist. It was also nicely crispy in the outside but not burnt. The batter was not heavy but light. I like the light batter. It also included cut red onion slivers and pickled red radish. The sauce itself was a little spicy. I liked it. The chicken bowl also looked good with jidori thigh / spinach / red onion / red ginger / sweet soy / steamed white rice. We may have to try it some other time. They were out of the yuzu shio ramen with chicken broth / soy egg / chicken chashu / menma. I heard the spicy beef udon noodle soup with serrano chili beef miso / wakame / green onion / chili thread is good. I also heard the big and spicy roll with spicy salmon / escolar / cucumber / onion sauce / soy jalapeño / sriracha is good. The chirashi and udon carbonara were also recommended. Some dishes are only available during dinner like snow crab sunonomo. The hand rolls were small and really cute like teeny tiny one inch by two inch tacos. So adorable! Service was great. Water was refilled a couple of times and the food came out quickly. The staff was polite, friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Came on a Saturday night at 6:30pm. It was very busy, but we had made prior reservations. Took awhile after our time to get seated, but it was understandable when seeing how busy it was. As soon as we were seated, we were given the menu and the specials for the day. We ordered so many items off both the menus that it would take too long to list here. Our server had everything staggered out so we wouldn't be overwhelmed all at once. My favorites were the shooters, wagyu uni toast, yakitoris, udon cabonara, and the sashimi/nigiri. Everything was mostly decent and the sashimi was very fresh! Next time I would skip the cod, Hokkaido bacon wrapped scallops, or sake clams. Overall, Service was great and we were happy with the food here. Would definitely return. We felt they had more selections here than their other location. read more

First time at this location. Came for lunch and we were seated immediately. Our server was pleasant. (I never got his name). Drinks delivered pretty quickly too. We ordered 2 signature rolls, one classic roll, a salmon bowl, garlic edamame, and one soda. The edamame was full of garlic and had no spice. A little overpowering, but I used the extra garlic to flavor my sushi, so no biggie. The signature rolls are kind of small and a bit pricey for the amount you don't get, but the flavor is fresh. I'm not a salmon fan, but my niece really enjoyed her bowl. She also dressed it with the extra garlic. All in all, I loved it, but for $100+ for lunch for 3, I probably won't frequent this place. I'll definitely be back for special occasions though. Most likely dinner since the lunch and sushi menus are limited during lunch hours. read more

My first visit to Shimogamo was delightful! We ordered the Signature Set of Hand Rolls, Citrus Roll, Double Salmon Roll, and Udon Carbonara. Each dish was well prepared and delicious. The freshness of the fish stood out, and the Udon Carbonara was amazing - it looked like something out of an anime. The restaurant was clean and the attentive staff made the experience even better. The staff replaced our plates after the carbonara for the sushi which was nice. The menu is pretty pricey, but worth it. It was challenging to locate the restaurant on maps. It doesn't seem like they do anything special for birthdays since we came here for a birthday celebration, and we listed it on the reservation. Oh well! The food and service were good which made up for it! read more

This location is not accommodating at all. I have called on a weekday to make reservations for 6 people and I was turned away. We have walked in with a party of 2 as well as 4 people and was told they didn't have any tables even though they had several seats available at the bar. The front desk staff is also very arrogant and rude. You can't even make reservations on open table. I would not recommend this location. read more

Came in for the first time by myself, the host put me at the sushi bar which was great! The food was really good, but the service was so bad! No one offered to explain the menu or how to order the food. So the waitress came and told me I have to check whatever I want on the paper that they gave me but the food I want is not even on the paper, it was on the menu only! I told her I couldn't find that dish on the paper, she said oh it ok you can just write it down???? Hello?? How in the world should I know that since no one explained to me what to do when they sat me down? And I mentioned no one told me what to do and she said: " oh we do this type of menu incase people don't want to much interaction "She was giving me attitude and never check on me or fill my water. read more

I started coming to Shimogamo for dinners with one of my friends monthly, and it has become our spot. The ambiance walking in is very modern, and tables are sometimes full on a Tuesday evening. We are usually greeted quickly whenever we come in, with the specials being explained to us right away. This time, we got 3 rolls (Aburi Salmon, Negi Toro, Hamachi Lime), and that never disappoints! Their fish is very fresh, and the combination of flavors in their rolls is so complementing. We always get sushi every time we go! One of our staples is also the Spicy Beef Udon, which isn't pictured, but this is our all time favorite. The spice is just the perfect amount with the savory beef flavoring and thick udon noodles all pairs together perfectly. We got the Sesame donuts to finish off our dinner, and we both decided that we could do without getting this one. It came with a black sugar and whipped cream, but we thought it would have gone better with ice cream. The donuts are more of a sweet, cakey texture, as opposed to a donut texture. Overall, a wonderful dinner, and we will be returning for our next girls dinner! read more

Shimogamo - Japanese Near Me - Gilbert, Arizona

So I'm torn a little with this restaurant, the food is fantastic, I mean it could be the best tasting Japanese Restaurant in Gilbert, it's that good. The staff could also be the rudest in Gilbert, sprinkle in the fact that it's also a higher-end establishment with lovely ambiance and what are you left with? 3 stars. So if you can put up with terrible service in exchange for delightfully great tasting offerings then this place will serve you well. We started with Shishito peppers, definitely the best I've had locally. Then the A5 wagyu fillet which was cooked to perfection, some places will undercook the wagyu in my opinion which can leave it a little chewy due to the high fat content but they prepared it perfectly, it just melted away! Next was Hamachi sashimi which was amazing and an assortment of sushi which finished the meal off well. As good as the food was I'll likely give them another shot in the future but I can say, after dining at over 300 restaurants in metro Phoenix I've only been treated worse by 2 other establishments. Just be aware. read more

I was hooked on the first bite! Hubs and I had other plans for dinner, but when we saw Shimogamo we decided to change our plans and try out Shimogamo instead. So glad we did! We later found out that it was their soft opening week. The space is clean, modern, and minimalistic. It's open concept and you can watch the chefs at work. The bar half indoor, half outdoor. Reservations are recommended, but they did not turn us away. They said the wait would be 20-30 minutes and we could grab a drink at the bar. We went up to the bar and ordered drinks. I ordered the matcha hai and my husband requested a mocktail. He told the bartender to surprise him and he came up with a tasty one with ramen! The matcha hai comes with green tea, rice shochu, and lemon juice. It was quite refreshing. We were seated at the bar shortly after getting our drinks. We ordered the following: Fried shishito peppers $12 Miso soup $5 O-toro $22 Dillish tuna roll $20 Hamachi lime roll $20 Saikyo miso pudding $8 We started with fried shishito peppers, miso soup, and the o-toro. The o-toro is the fattiest tuna belly was my favorite from the night. It melted in my mouth. The dillish tuna roll and hamachi lime roll were also stellar. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. We ended the meal with saikyo miso pudding, which has saikyo miso, custard, kokuto syrup, and miso powder. It was incredible. The staff was wonderful. They have some kinks to work out, but given it was only their first few weeks of opening, they did great. We are looking forward to returning soon! read more

Finally found time to try out Shimogamo on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. We were swiftly seated at the sushi bar and our waiter was there within seconds. Lunch menu is hand rolls only, plus a few ramen and noodle dishes. We ordered an udon noodle bowl to share (which they kindly split for us) and a series of hand rolls. Sushi was incredible. Super fresh and served with compelling flavors and textures. The udon was also delicious, the broth and beef were incredibly tasty. Service was great, the sushi chefs were kind and knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant has an upscale feel, very vibey. A great addition to Gilbert. Celebrated my birthday at their new location tonight! We loved the original in Chandler and figured we would love this new one! We do! It is a totally different vibe, more modern feel, and less intimate, but I had a lovely date and really enjoyed the menu. Austin was our server, a great guy, and very attentive to our order. Service from the kitchen was a bit slow, but it was a Saturday night and a full house. We started our dinner with the katsu skewers and miso soup. Please, get the katsu skewers when you dine here! The katsu sauce was so good, and the actual cutlets were juicy and thick! We then ordered our nigri from the specials menu, a few rolls that are exclusive to their location, and the yakitori skewers. The sushi rolls we got were incredible, soft and buttery fish, and a great balance of flavors. The skewers came with their own salts, and all were good. I recommend the assorted option so you can really taste the quality. I really enjoyed everything! But the star of the meal was the matcha tiramisu, and I regret sharing with my husband. Beautiful space and lots of parking, but lots of trendy restaurants are neighbors here, so be ready to walk a bit from the parking lot. read more

Hubby and I came here during their lunch hour. It wasn't too busy and the ambiance was very inviting, modern, and upscale. The music wasn't too loud and the staff were friendly. Considering they are known for their sushi, my husband and I wanted to try their other dishes. Here are my thoughts: Udon bowl - the broth was flavorful and the noodles were great. My only complaint was the ground meat that was used. The meat settled to the bottom of the bowl which you had to consistently scooped up. I also added the egg to my dish which was the perfect addition in my opinion. Beef rice bowl - my husband ordered this and said it was good. However, he felt like there wasn't enough meat. He felt like it wasn't really worth the price. Matcha cheesecake - this is very rich and I was not aware of the red bean paste. I'm usually not a big fan of red bean so I would pass on this if you're the same. It's creamy but is a bit heavy if you're already full. I didn't finish it. Overall, I think it's not a bad place to try out if you're in the area. I believe this spot is more known for their sushi and rolls. So I may return to try that next time. read more

Sad to see this restaurant go downhill. We've been going to shimogamo for so many years. The fish and food isn't as fresh as before. The service and staff were so snarky and made it clear they didn't want our business from the moment we walked in to when we left. They were just rude and unaccommodating. We still spent over $300 and wished we would have left and gone somewhere else. We picked this place to celebrate an occasion because it was nostalgic for our family and this time it was a major disappointment. We used to know the owners and head chefs before they grew. Sadly will be our last time going to shimogamo. What once was great is no longer. read more

The miso soup was lukewarm and way too much seaweed and too thickly cut. We were served the wrong meal but decided to not say anything, it was teriyaki chicken instead of salmon and the teriyaki sauce was extremely salty and I couldn't eat more than one bite. The side of rice wasn't very good, kind of dry and just not good Japanese rice that is sticky and pearly. My nigiri was good, the fish seemed fresh and a good texture. The spicy tuna roll was good. The salad dressing was very bland, usually you get a really yummy sesame dressing or citrus, this was neither, but the salad itself was good and full of various vegetables. This restaurant is too expensive for the quality and experience. The service was good other than the wrong meal. Ambiance is standard for a modern sushi restaurant. read more

I've been going to their Chandler location for decades but have been hitting this Gilbert spot more just because they are open for lunch. Same top tier quality level as Chandler and I love that they are starting to experiment with different fish and opening up the menu a bit with their specials. The people in Shimo Gilbert are simply awesome. Matt, Virgilio (sry if I butchered that buddy), Christina, Kyle and many others make me always comfortable there solo or with the whole fam. If you're a sushi snob this is your place. They nerf the menu a bit for lunch but go for dinner if you want to try some new, or at least uncommon sushi things. If you see Golden Eye Snapper / Kinmedai just get it nigiri style. You can thank me later. read more
