One of my favorite restaurants in all of Arizona. Amazing food and now they do take out as well. Highly recommended for sushi and poke lovers read more

Well. I hate to say that I was super disappointed in this restaurant. I wanted to love it and their sushi. Theo sushi menu was super limited and didn't have many options. I sat at the sushi bar and was not even in a good spot to watch them do their work. Usually you get handed your sushi by the chefs when you sit at the bar but it was brought to me by a server who forgot to bring wasabi and ginger. Three of the people sitting at the bar had to ask for those things when it should come atomically with sushi. Won't go back. read more

Sushi was on point and melts in your mouth. Highly recommend just be prepared to spend a lot! It's worth it though.

Best sushi in the east valley! Fresh and delicious, but definitely ain't cheap. Be prepared to splurge on this meal but definitely worth it!

The sushi here is always absolutely amazing! So fresh and delicious. I'm constantly telling all my friends to try this place. I've been here a handful of times with my boyfriend and his family. The service has always been good accept for one time we had this very miserable server. He wasn't very pleasant and after we paid he didn't say thank you, goodbye, have a good night or anything. He ignored us even after we thanked him for everything...literally said nothing. We tried to brush him off because maybe he had a bad night. Well last weekend I wanted to bring my parents here for the first time and of course we had him as our server. He just seems like he hates his job. He's not very friendly or sociable. Definitely put a damper on the experience. read more

I don't want to say it because it's already busy, but this is delicious sushi. The staff is fantastic and the dining in the restaurant is great. read more

I do not recommend, overpriced, and they try to be fancy, but it taste like supermarket sushi Not a big fan read more

My husband and I have been to the Chandler Shimogamo location several times over the past few years, and have always loved it. We went to this location last night. The food tasted fine, and the service was okay, but by 2am I was IMMENSELY sick. I absolutely got food poisoning from some fish either being mishandled or kept at the wrong temperature. Absolutely awful. read more

Ate lunch with hubby, great food and service. Staff is wonderful to talk to. We have been here 3 times. Every experience has been wonderful

Phenomenal. No joke. I live in LA and this place stands toe-to-toe with the best sushi places I've been to there. Double Salmon roll amazing. Hamachi Lime Roll terrific. The chicken skewers (Kashiwa & Teba) blew me away. The baked king crab roll! WOW! And wait til you try the matcha taramisu -- UNreal!! read more

Sushi here was legit some of the best we had in a while! Staff were excellent as well as the sushi chiefs! We will be back!

Been goin to the Chandler location forever and it is one of the best sushi restaurants in the USA. So we tried the new one in Gilbert, AZ for a birthday celebration. I had read it wasn't as traditional as the original but had a lot to offer. We were not disappointed. Started off with HIRAME USUZUKURI (halibut) which is so sublime that one just has to try it to understand. The other big favourite was the MAGURO (bigeye tuna) my guest was amazed how good it was. I enjoyed the ABURA BOUZU (escolar) especially since I don't find it everywhere in the AZ. We also shared the smoked skirt steak which was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was so tender it was like meat butter. Truly rememberable. The meal was finished with a celebratory KAKIGORI which was so elevated above shaved ice it was a shame to call it shaved ice lol. The service was spot on, servers were helpful and knowledgeable without being too stalker-ish lol. I highly recommend this new edition of Shimogamo for dining parties of sushi lovers and their friends who are less fond of sushi, something for everyone. Well done Shimogamo! Keep up the great work. read more

Shimogamo - Some great bigeye tuna and friends - Japanese Near Me - Gilbert, Arizona

This is an upscale Japanese restaurant with prices to match. I ordered the Chirashi bowl, listed at $32 on the lunch menu. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I waited about 15 minutes for my food which was fine. The presentation was beautiful, but in my opinion there should have been more fish. There were two pieces of tamago, and two scallops, but just one piece each for the other selections. Ebi, Salmon, Tuna. Hamachi, Red snapper? The sushi rice was okay. Now, the problem: the soy sauce that was on the table was old or tainted. It comes in a little teapot dispenser. It gave my fish a musty taste. After I had eaten several pieces, I realized that it was the fault of the soy sauce, not the fish. I immediately called the waiter to bring me some fresh soy sauce. He soon brought me what he called the "house" soy sauce, which was better than excellent. He explained that the soy sauce that came on the table was a low sodium version, and that some people don't care for it. I definitely did like the "house" soy sauce, but detested the soy sauce that came in the little teapot server. So, live and learn. I would definitely suggest that you ask for the "house" soy sauce, and avoid the soy sauce in the teapot server. read more

Seriously over rated and over priced. Yellowtail Nigiri was pretty good, but cod was overcooked and server forgot to place the order for our roll. Service was extremely slow, and food was overpriced for what was received. Really disappointed as I had heard this was the place for high end sushi in the east valley. Still looking for that place. Will not be coming back here. read more

Went here for a weekend lunch. The lunch menu is so small. The sushi is overpriced and the waiters are strange. The sushi took SO long to come out and it was not even busy. The atmosphere is awful it's super bright. Would not recommend this place. read more

This is our favorite sushi spot in AZ, it is fantastic. The citrus roll is unbeatable. However, today, the service seemed a little slow and they weren't as busy. It took us a while to get our drinks. We also got two of the same cocktails, but one had more filled in it than the other one. Normally every time we go it's the perfect experience, so just a little odd today. The food is fantastic and the drinks are great! read more

As a chef I can't say how happy I am that a non chain restaurant has opened in the area. I love this place. Peter is a fantastic host and remembers us every time we come in. By far the best restaurant in Gilbert. I've never had anything I didn't not thoroughly enjoy. From the cocktails to the sashimi, everything they do here they do at an extremely high level. This place is on par with some of the best sushi restaurants over ever eaten at including those in Japan. Just amazing food and service. read more

I came here for lunch with my husband and baby boy. We were seated right away. Our server was Tina and she delivered exceptional service. We got the Shrimp Tempura, soup/salad, premium hand roll set (which included the A5 Wagyu, Baked Scallop & Citrus snow crab) & also an additional order of the A5 Wagyu & Citrus Snow Crab hand rolls because they were so good. We also shared the Shimogamo beef bowl and it was really good. Lastly, we got the matcha tiramisu with red bean and OMG it was the best dessert I ever had. Overall everything tasted delicious and worth the $$$. We will definitely come back. read more

Great food, itty bitty tiny portions and wayyyyyy too expensive. We spent over $300 for 3 of us and left hungry! Only one person drinking wine. Coming from LA and OC, we know quality sushi and this is quality but price is too high for what you get and especially here in Gilbert. To top it off. my wife was taken back by the small wine glasses for the price! The only Chardonnay by the glass was $17 for a very small pour.. The ambiance is very very stale and should be more special for what you pay. The best part was our server, he was very nice and attentive. We have some great "go tos" here in Gilbert and this will not be one of them.... I'd rather go to a nice steakhouse or sushi spot in Phx or Scottsdale for that price. Rather than go here, treat yourself to one of the great resort restaurants or something more special! read more

Terrible tasteless ramen. The pork katsu bowl was awful. The only thing to order in this joint is sushi. Obviously, the owners do not supervise this location as compared to the original Chandler Shimogamo. They have let this restaurant continue to deteriorate. read more

This may be the most memorable restaurant experience I have ever had and sets the standard for incredible food service. In summary, the service was exemplary and the food was fantastic quality. Peter was very accommodating and we were seated at the sushi bar in front of their executive chef, Tak, which I would highly recommend to smaller parties. He and the other sushi chefs were extremely skilled and friendly, offering information on the different dishes they were preparing as well as recommendations for our own dinner. They answered any questions we had about our food and were great to watch and talk to throughout the experience, sharing their passion for the food they were making and their experience and culinary history. Their miso soup and shrimp tempura were incredible and the yakitori chicken thighs were meltingly good even compared to other restaurants in the area. The assorted sushi gave a great selection of different cuts to try. I particularly enjoyed the salted fluke. Chef Sam recommended escolar which I tried as sashimi and it was fantastic. It was rich and buttery, recommended for those who like a strong flavor in their sushi. The cocktails were great too. The Nishiki Market Light was a fantastic whiskey cocktail with a refreshing splash of bitters and orange, and their Midori sour is perfect for those who like sweet and sour cocktails. We had the matcha tiramisu, which was great. Tangy and sweet, I would recommend it to those who like mascarpone and red bean paste. The executive chef himself walked us to the door at the end of the evening, putting a conclusion to the most wonderful restaurant experience I've ever had! read more

I've been to the Chandler location for special occasions and was so excited to see Shimogamo open a location in Gilbert! We need more great culinary options like this in the area. Amazing, authentic experience. Highly recommend if you enjoy sushi. read more

Service was incredible from start to finish, the sushi is of utmost quality and handmade with precision and professional perfection and expertise. The cocktails are unique and delicious. It was such a treat dining here, I cannot wait to go back! read more

Oh my goodness. Absolute perfection!! Best sushi in the East valley. Amazing flavors and excellent quality of fish. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. I love that the sushi is high end and such beautiful art. Service was excellent. Sad that a lot of things ran out but can you blame them? So so good! Will be back 10/10 read more

Very tight on space and not a lot of room to get around to get to your table. The food was good, but it wasn't the best we have ever had. When ordering sushi rolls, the person delivering the food would explain in detail about everything in it, which was a nice touch. You can tell there isn't a lot of space in the sushi making/kitchen area either because it seemed like everyone was having a hard time getting around each other. When ordering a sake bomb, it wasn't explained that the sake was gonna be a very minimal amount (a half shot glass size). The edamame is not complimentary. The kitchen is right next to the bathroom and when we went to use the bathroom, waiters ran into us both times and didn't allow us to go before them, they walked right in front of us. The sushi was good, but the atmosphere made the experience unenjoyable. We don't plan on returning. read more

I recently had the opportunity to join another couple, along with my husband, for date night at Shimogamo. While we did not have reservations (those are highly suggested and will save you a lot of hassle and waiting), we were seated right away outside on the patio. Shimogamo is in a trendy restaurant area on the corner of Williams Field and San Tan Parkway across from the San Tan Mall in Gilbert. The patio is a great space with a modern, upscale feel. Our waiter was Kyle who guided us through the menu as if an artist was painting a picture. We're not huge sake drinkers, or really drinkers in general, but Kyle suggested a bottle of sake to start our meal off with, and it did not disappoint. The Sword of the Sun sake was a wonderful choice to begin our meals with. Kyle suggested some Crispy Truffle Crab and Garlic Soy Brussels to munch on while we waited for our sushi and rolls to arrive. Service was prompt, knowledgeable, and professional. Kyle checked on us with appropriate timing and never let our waters or sake get close to empty. After gorging ourselves on what seemed like one of everything off the menu, crowd favorites were the Crispy Truffle Crab, Hamachi Lime roll, Kashiwa skewers AND the A5 Wagyu (I forget which cut our friends ordered, but it was melt in your mouth tender). We also really enjoyed some Japanese Uni (another great suggestion by our server) and we finished with Kyle's suggestion for dessert: Sake Cheesecake. Overall, a fantastic experience and a great chance to catch up with old friends. Thanks to Kyle for providing us with wonderful service and background knowledge about the food menu, beverage options, and history of the restaurant. We look forward to many meals at Shimogamo and will ask for Kyle whenever possible. read more

I've been going to Shimogamo in Chandler for over 10 years and it's by far my favorite restaurant in the valley. But the Gilbert location is a disappointment due to the service. The food is still great quality and great drinks. I've gone to this location about 5-6 times and the majority of these the service from the waiters is awful. Not the quality I'm used to from this family owned restaurant. read more

Just had a great lunch here. Clean decor. Excellent service. Great tasting dishes. Udon and Chirashi. Bacon scallop. Hand rolls

We have been going to the Dobson Shimogamo location for some time, and this past Saturday, we decided to try the Santan location and were definitely "wowed" by the full experience. A big part of this "wow" experience centered on our server, Tina. Not only was she attentive and professional, she shared her thoughts and made some great suggestions. The food and ambiance was at a level that all restaurants should aspire to! We cannot wait to go back! read more

New hipster style Japanese restaurant that caters to the younger generation. Ambiance is appropriate for the type of clientele they're trying to attract. Service was adequate and the waiter was Johnny on spot. Met our needs. Food is were I give it a lower rating. This not a typical Japanese restaurant. Sushi presentation was excellent, but can get the same quality at less expensive places thru out the valley. The tamago had a great taste but the egg was sliced very thin compared to what you would expect in traditional Japanese restaurant. They brought me some tonkatsu sauce I asked for and found very runny compared to the traditional sauce. The rice is flaky compared to a more sticky Asian rice. For those that have never spent years living in Japan would probably find this place quite pleasing. JMO. Don't let that from trying it out. read more

We had been to the Chandler location & had raved about the food. I am not sure what is happening at San Tan. After our waiter arrived we had a few questions. He never told us anything about the menu or specials. Had to ease drop on the other waiter to hear about them. Not sure what was happening with our waiter but he was not very friendly & seemed like we were bothering him by just being there. We then order the oysters & drinks. Oysters came but no drinks asked again. I was so disapointed they were so tiny ( not like the picture on the menu). I would not of had a problem with that if they were good but they were not & full of pieces of shells. Food arrived still no drinks asked once again. Was shocked by the quality of the sushi. Ordered 5 diferent rolls they all were pretty tasteless. Some were even supposed to be spicy but no. Will not go back again & not sure i will go to Chandler location either. read more

Everything we got was amazing! The service and ambiance were top notch! Definitely will be returning soon. 10/10

Very disappointed with the food and policies overall. The service was good, but we were asked to leave to the bar when we asked while ordering food and drink for another reservation. Overall, the experience was medium at best. Probably would not return. read more

Amazing! Amazing service! Amazing food! 15/10! So fresh. Arguably the best sushi spot in Arizona!

Crazy to think this place is anything less than amazing. Been here multiple times with my wife, the sushi is phenomenal, the service is great, you will very rarely find a better sushi restaurant than this read more

Spent a little over $400.00 for dinner for two with tip. Food was good but lights were too bright for eating dinner in a restaurant. Waiter was fair at best and said the goal of the restaurant was to create a very casual cafeteria style dining experience with bright lights and tables you'd see in a Cracker Barrel. Not sure I've ever paid $400.00 for two at a casual restaurant before in my life. read more

Service was absolutely horrible - spent $120 on 2 appetizers and drinks and never even got our nigiri. Was planning on spending a nice night with my husband but our food never came. We will not be back. Go to blue wasabi or sushiya or even fryes sushi instead. Would give a 0 if I could. This is the second time in a row with crappy service at this location. read more

Decent food, but not worth the cost in my opinion. Spending $60-70 for 3 rolls split between two people is just not enough.

Food was good but service was just OK and we spent over $130 on lunch for 2 people and sat at the bar. Hand rolls are from $7-13 and they are too small to share so be prepared. We left feeling underwhelmed at everything. Maybe dinner service is better but we'll hesitate to return. read more
