The Genoa and Spaguetti & Sauce.
    Jeffrey F.

Brought my son here one Friday evening and it was hopping for sure. We didn't have to wait too long to be seated. Neat setup inside especially if you get seated upstairs. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Food was good and it came out quick. The Genoa was the dish I had and it did not disappoint. Try it out if you're in the area.

Confession time: I had never been to Denver Restaurant Week until this year. Shells and Sauce ended up being my first stop. Located in Congress Park, it has that classic old school Italian neighborhood restaurant feel. The Restaurant Week menu was fun because you could mix and match different courses to build your own meal. We tried a few cocktails to start including the Pearfect Martini and the Gin & Tectonics. Both were refreshing and a nice way to kick things off. For starters we ordered the crispy brussels sprouts, crab cakes, classic Italian Caesar, and the caprese burrata. The brussels sprouts and burrata were probably my favorites of the group. For mains we tried the wild mushroom marsala with veal, the bolognese with angel hair pasta, homemade lasagna, Italian cheese ravioli, and the cacio e pepe with shrimp. It was a good spread of classic Italian comfort dishes. To finish we had the chocolate chip cannolis and the vanilla bean crème brûlée. Overall it was a pleasant experience and a nice introduction to Denver Restaurant Week. Shells and Sauce is a cozy neighborhood spot for classic Italian dishes in the Congress Park area.

What? I didn't leave a review from many years back when we first came here? It was an amazingly deliciously wonderful experience. Apparently we had the chicken Marsala and *loved* it. Many, many years later we finally made our way back here and still loved it! Service was like we were visiting with family or friends. Very accommodating and personal. No one trying to recite memorized descriptions but rather as if they cooked it themselves. The first time we sat upstairs at the bar. This time we sat at a table. Both were comfortable and nice but of course the table provided a little more privacy and space. We had the Shrimp Devalino (sp?) and the pan seared salmon. We swapped half way through so we both could enjoy each. In all honesty the swapped meals fit both of us better (the shrimp was a bit too spicy for me). I hope we head back much sooner next time since there were other items I would like to try. Maybe even for HH?

Y'all. Their gluten free pasta is SO good. I'm not sure what brand it is or if they make it in house it's got that fresh homemade, not falling apart, sauce carrying deliciousness. We went for restaurant week and had a good size salad plus entree each plus dessert split between couple. Def going back! BONUS, the staff was very knowledgeable about GF and specified for celiac (though I think all GF requests should be taken seriously and consistently).

Restaurant week is the best deal, but with going anytime.. A filet stroganoff and pork chop special. Service was fantastic.

Tucked away in the Congress Park neighborhood is Shells & Sauce, one of my favorite places to eat! It's my go-to restaurant to take friends & family. It's very reasonably priced with nice size portions. They serve deliciously consistent Classic Italian dishes, and have gluten-free options too. A couple of tips...make a reservation if you can, this cozy place is always busy & it's closed Sundays & Mondays. There are two dining rooms, one main level & the other upstairs. Just like a noisy Italian family having Sunday supper, Shells & Sauce can get loud. Parking can be a challenge, there is a small parking lot in the back but it's pretty much street parking. We brought our out-of-town friends here one early Friday night. Happy to have made reservations because it was hopping at 5:30pm. Our server was great. She kept our water glasses full & was quick to bring us complimentary (endless) fresh baked bread with a balsamic dipping oil. We had the Scallops & Risotto, Lasagna, Shrimp Carbonara & Shrimp Diavolo. The scallops were cooked perfectly, the lasagna was cheesy & delicious, the carbonara was divine, (best I've had) & the diavolo was spicy & delectable as usual. Our dishes were outstanding. This place is lively & fun, I highly recommend it!

Came for Happy Hour at 4:30pm -- not bad, not great either. * mini grilled salmon, very dry fish but delicious garnish and sauce. * mini Bolognese, it's capellini not penne as advertised, and way overcooked; the 'homemade sauce' tastes surprisingly bland. (FWIW the best pasta for Bolognese sauce is tagliatelle.) I am guessing they probably make these dishes in large batches at the start of Happy Hour that don't taste so good anymore close to 5:00pm. Next time will order from their regular menu. Cozy, homey dining room. Great waitstaff!

Ask the Community - Shells and Sauce

Still getting familiar with Denver- anyone know if there is a parking lot or garage near by? Or street parking?

Street parking is generally pretty easy around there. We've never had a problem finding a spot within a block or two.

What hours do they serve brunch on Saturday/Sunday?

    I believe 10:30-2:30

Does anyone know if they still serve gnocchi?

Its off the menu at moment, will probably return when the weather gets cooler

We started with the focaccia (with the ricotta and honey on the side) and it was so tasty. My partner doesn't normally like ricotta, but loved this dish! Then, we had the melon salad (very refreshing). We were celebrating our anniversary, and the staff brought out complimentary glasses of bubbly rosé, as well as their special dish, which were the stuffed squash blossoms. This was a really thoughtful touch! For mains, we ordered the tagliatelle with lobster (this dish had a tiny bit of spice, which was fine for us but might catch someone else off guard), and the lamb loin. Both were excellent. Overall, we had a great time! We found easy street parking nearby, as well. My only downside would be that, because this restaurant is so popular, there are lots of diners, which makes for a pretty loud atmosphere. However, this just speaks to how good everything is, so if you think about it, perhaps it's a good sign!

I was eventually able to snag an 8 PM reservation on Sunday, which was a little late for us considering we had a very early flight the next morning. We came here Sunday evening after I finished the Boulderthon Half Marathon -- my second year running it. This time I was visiting Colorado with family who were here for the first time. Parking was actually much easier than expected. Since it was Sunday, we found free street parking around the corner, only about a three-minute walk away. One thing to know: Tavernetta's entrance is tucked around the corner rather than directly facing the street. You have to walk down what feels almost like a little corridor or alleyway to reach it -- see the photo. I was only able to reserve seating on the covered outdoor patio. Tavernetta definitely has a fine-dining feel, and the prices reflect that, but I wanted to see what all the hype was about since I'd never been before. For starters, we ordered the focaccia with ricotta and BC honey, which was an additional $4. The bread was very good, and I especially liked it with the ricotta and honey. It was flavorful without feeling too heavy. For the salad, we shared the Melone e Cetrioli for $18, with cucumber, watermelon, arugula, goat cheese, and black garlic vinaigrette. I chose it because the watermelon and cucumber sounded refreshing, and the goat cheese seemed lighter than some of the richer options on the menu. That turned out to be a good call. The arugula worked nicely with everything, and overall it was fresh, light, and not overly filling. For my main, I ordered the Rigatoni for $34 with lamb ragù and Pecorino Romano. I'd never had a lamb ragù before -- usually I've had beef -- so it was something different. There was more pasta than meat, but the lamb flavor still came through. I'd probably give the dish itself around a 7.5/10. Good and interesting, but not something that completely blew me away. Others at the table ordered the Tagliatelle for $38 with Maine lobster, Calabrian chili, preserved tomato, and celery. I tried some, and that one was excellent. It had a little heat, plenty of tomato and vegetable flavor, and the lobster worked really well with it. It was slightly creamy too. On second thought, I actually liked that dish more than my own -- probably around a 9/10. Service throughout the meal was very good, and I liked the little details too, including the very thin glassware they used for water. The whole experience definitely felt more polished and upscale. Overall, Tavernetta was expensive, but it felt like a genuine fine-dining experience. My own entrée wasn't spectacular enough for me to call the entire meal perfect, but several other parts of the meal were excellent, especially the focaccia and tagliatelle. It also made for a pretty satisfying post-race dinner after Boulderthon, when my legs were definitely feeling the miles. I'd gladly come back if I'm in Denver again -- and next time I might just order the tagliatelle myself. Last visited: September 27, 2026

However, I have dined here 5 times over the last 12 months and each time I have experienced 1) servers that neglect the solo diner and 2) lazy bartenders. All five times I have gone here, to both eat and drink, I have been sat at the bar. I normally enjoy the experience of sitting at a restaurant's bar, however the experiences at Spuntino have been unpleasant. 1) When you sit at the bar, they have a server attend to you instead of the bartender standing right in front of you. This would be fine except the server still has a full section in another portion of the restaurant and they tend to forget about their customers sitting at the bar. All five times I've ate here I've constantly had to flag down my server to order, get the check, have my drink that's sitting at the bar handed to me, order another round, etc., which greatly takes away from the dining experience. This leads into the lazy bartenders issue. 2) Despite sitting in front of the bartender as they make your drink, they refuse hand you your drink once it's made and instead will walk a longer distance to place your drink on the service well where it sits until your server comes to deliver it, which in most cases has taken 5-10 minutes. So you're sitting there staring at your drink watering down because the bartenders are too lazy to just hand it to you even though the drink ticket shows that the drink is for a customer sitting at the bar. There have been a handful of occasions where I've had to flag down another staff member to ask them to deliver my drink because my server hasn't come behind the bar and the bartenders will completely ignore you when you try to get their attention. I experienced these problems the first time I dined at Spuntino, and I've tried several times again hoping the experience would be different, but each time it has been the same which has been extremely disappointing and ultimately deterred me from wanting to dine and spend my money here.
