Bastien's continues to be my favorite steakhouse in Denver! Top-notch service, food and drink are superb!

I finally got the opportunity to give Bastien's, along Colfax, a try. Bastien's advertises their sugar steaks, so for my birthday dinner, I split one with my bestie. Warning - they do have a split plate fee of $14. If you order the sugar rub, rare or medium rare is the temperature your meat is cooked to. The medium rare was perfectly cooked and oh, so delicious. At first bite, you think, "who has spilled sugar on my steak?!" But, after a couple more bites, it is absolutely delightful. Since this has been one of the few businesses along Colfax that is nearing its 9th decade in business, Bastien's offer an eclectic cocktail menu with some good, old-fashioned drinks to go with their good, old-fashioned decor. I had the gimlet with my meal and yes, I thought I was on the set of Mad Men after ordering. Service was great, as one would expect in this forum. With a birthday treat to top it off, Bastien's really made my day special. Thanks!

A classic steakhouse with all the charm! Take a walk back in time with food and service that match the decor. The staff are clearly experience servers with a food critic worthy palate based on their recommendations and descriptions of the dishes. We started with the complimentary rolls which were soft and buttery. Then we started with bacon wrapped scallops, french onion and green chili soups. Both were flavorful and delicious. We each got steak. My husband got the special and I got the classic sugar steak. It was very good but, I thought it would have more unique flavor due to all the hype. I would go back for cocktails and try another steak option.

Tables available in the bar area

Wow, where do I begin? I tried making a reservation online last minute (a Friday at like 4:30) but of course nothing was available until 9pm on Resy. My husband suggested I call the place to see if we can sit and eat at the bar. I call and the guy tells me Yes, i can reserve you a table on the bar section but if you just come, it's first come, first serve at the bar. So I accept the bar area table reservation. We arrive and the ambience is so cool and vintage and authentic. We ordered some gin gimlets and a fun seasonal drink called Juniper Harvest w Empress gin, elderflower liqueur, nint, simple syrup and lime. For appetizers, we ordered the escargot. Perfect, with little crostinis and super buttery and cheesy. For mains, I ordered the blackened salmon with string fries (I was dieting and trying to avoid carbs altogether and didn't want the kitchen working extra hard!) And I subbed the grilled Caesar salad as a side (really tasty and perfectly portioned). The blackened salmon was incredible. I knew it from when I cut the first piece that it was cooked perfectly. And the flash fried spinach was TO DIE FOR. INCREDIBLE!!! My hubs ordered the NY Strip and he said it was cooked perfectly and was soooo delicious! He ordered a regular side salad and a twice baked potato which did not disappoint. We cleaned our plates shamelessly. We will definitely return the next time we're in town!!!

Bastien's was a fun spot located in the City Park/Colfax neighborhood. We were seated in the upstairs area, and it was perfect since we had our baby with us. My husband and I had heard about the sugar steaks and were excited to give it a taste. The steaks were great cuts and had great char/flavor with the sugar rub. The shoe string fries were okay, but when I stop by again, I would opt in for the steak fries-- I do wish they had a bit more salt. Lastly, I opted for the French onion soup, which was tasty, but also wished it had a bit more cheese, however, the flavor was great. We ended the night with a coconut banana pie, which is basically a banana cream pie with toasted coconut on top. This was one of the first restaurants we attended after I gave birth and it was well worth the steak!

Hostess wasn't friendly, but the ambiance was a classic vibe and clean. Food was good, steak was cooked to perfection-wasn't really feeling their sugar rub.. I wouldn't order that again but the dry aged ribeye was delicious! Loved the twice baked potato and the French onion soup! No wait time. Only one restroom.

Super friendly service, fun cozy atmosphere, and an amazing meal! We loved the sugar steak. It was amazing for a celebratory date night - just a wonderful nostalgic experience.

Well 10 years later and we ate dinner here. I got the sugar bone-in ribeye and it was cooked perfectly. Caramelized outside as expected, tender steak overall. It came with green beans, a slice of bell pepper and a slice of squash. I upgraded to the wedge salad, which filled me. But they still brought me a birthday cheesecake treat. Yum! We sat upstairs. Service was great! I mentioned I loved ice in my water and she was sure to bring water containers with lots of ice. Positive, happy vibes. Look forward to going back!

Bastien's has been a Denver icon since the 1930s. It is known for its sugar steak, so I split the 10-oz NY Strip with the birthday girl. Head's up, there is a split plate fee of $14, but each person gets a choice of potato and salad. The sugar rub was initially sweet but calmed down once your palate adjusted. Many cocktail options included classics such as a Tom Collins, Gimlet, and White Russian. Service was attentive, although busy as it got later. A lovely NY-style slice of cheesecake was brought out for the birthday celebration. Follow the iconic neon sign on Colfax and step back into time in this mid-century design.

When my son asked what I wanted for dinner, I said steak. He absolutely delivered by choosing Bastien's! Granted, the company was stupendous with my son and his fiancee, but there was a vibe here that really left us just plain happy. There's nothing silly about the place, it wasnt that. I believe Bastien's is a Denver institution, been around for decades. It's on the border of a neighborhood and when you walk in, it says, maybe, 1950s in a warm, welcoming, wood trim way. We were seated upstairs, which, as temps rise outside might not be the best seats in the house as they are working on boosting their AC capabilities, but this evening, our booth was just right. Our waitress was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, without hovering or being intrusive. We started with cocktails -- a standard Old Fashioned, a throwback Sloe Gin Fizz, and Bastien's take on a dirty martini called the Filthy Martini (in addition to olive juice, it has pepperoncini juice). They all were great, and that last one has quite a pucker! We moved on to Escargot, which was not served in snail shells and was not swimming in butter, but was topped with a nice cheesy crust and came with bread slices. Salads here were beautifully presented and not overly dressed, which was nice. They are just the right size and make up of all things fresh so you can eat it all (and you'll want to) without getting full before the main course. And now for the steak -- I had the 4x4, which is a 4-ounce filet with four bacon-wrapped scallops. The scallops were a nice size, somewhere between the size of a quarter and a half-dollar, but I'm guessing they're usually more consistently larger, as instead of four, I got six! All the better for sharing! They were delicious. My steak was perfectly cooked medium-rare and served with delicious fresh green beans and the potato special of the evening, which I dont remember much about. Mashed. Others had the 16-oz NY Strip, one with the house famous sugar rub and the other with a coffee rub with avocado chimichurri. The sugar rub was neither overwhelmingly sweet nor super impressive, just a nice thing to try, and the steak was divine! The avocado chimichurri was AMAZING! It has a little bit of a zing to it, so maybe there is some jalapeño in there? And the steak was cooked just right! We had a nice red wine with dinner. The wine list is not overly extensive, just large enough for a variety of choices without making your head spin. I wish there were one or two more red blend options (Daou is not my fave). Dessert was creme brulee topped with a strawberry garnish. Lovely and luscious! Rather than a glass sheet of sugar across the top, it seemed like a large grain sugar was sprinkled over top then broiled, and the result was almost a cobblestone effect of sugar. I LOVE this approach. [Aside: my daughter just returned from France with a picture of the creme brulee she had. The approach was the same -- but Bastien's looked better.] The custard was creamy and light and just enough for us to share on top of already being stuffed. I can't remember when I've had such a relaxing, delicious, fun dining experience. It's a little on the high-end side, but absolutely worth it. I cant wait to go back!

    Firecracker shrimp

4.5 stars! My bf and I did an early valentines dinner at Bastien's. The only downfall was the construction around the restaurant. From the start we were treated well and taken care of. Our server, Lara, was incredibly helpful, kind, and funny! I had the pomegranate margarita and that was so good. My boyfriend did the Colorado bulldog and an espresso martini- which he said was pretty strong.. we also shared the firecracker shrimp for an app! For dinner I had the wagyu (upgraded with caramelized onions & cheddar) with a twice baked potato and the Caesar grilled wedge. It was all delicious! Great portions. My bf had the special which was surf n turf. For dessert we shared the coconut banana cream pie - I'd give it a 3.8/5.. nothing that impressive. I recommend this restaurant, especially because it's been around for so long!!!

    Three Cheese Stuffed Gnocchi

We came to Bastien's tonight for our anniversary meal and we were, just as we expected, satisfied. To start off the place is beautifully lit, perfect for intimacy, but also light enough that you can still see. We brought our daughter along with us and they had a kids menu for her to select from making everything easy. The bread and the butter were absolutely delicious and the perfect way to start off our dinner. 10/10 We ordered the three cheese gnocchi and it was also so delicious, it came with so many flavors and had a creaminess to it that was to die for 10/10. I got a 16 oz Sugar Steak with mashed potatoes and a house salad. I selected Italian for my dressing, but I do wish that I hadn't because it didn't pair well for me with a lot of the flavors in the salad. The salad was still delicious and fresh. As far as the mashed potatoes go, I like a creamier potato, but these were still very yummy and had flavor. Last but not least, the sugar steak. The cut of meat was delicious, it was cooked to perfection, but I am not a sugar steak girl. I prefer my meat very savory. HOWEVER, I was still very intrigued and enjoyed this steak. It almost felt like a play on bbq to me, but elevated. 9/10 We closed the night with cheesecake to celebrate, on the house and it was soooo delicious. The raspberry notes matched with the chocolate cream really made it a 10/10. Our server was amazing. She was so attentive, knowledgeable, and truly a joy to have. We will definitely be back.

I came into Bastien's for dinner without a reservation. This was a huge mistake, as they were completely booked out for the night. Nevertheless, I was hopeful that the restaurant's popularity would be an indicator for the quality of the food and service. When a space eventually became available, I was seated. My server was extremely enthusiastic and gave knowledgeable insights into the menu. The sugar steak was delicious and cooked to perfection; it was an odd sensation to taste sugar on steak, but it works! The twice-baked potato was well-seasoned and assembled perfectly. I also had the French onion soup based on the waitress' recommendation. While the French onion soup was okay, it wasn't spectacular by any means, and I found it to be an unnecessary recommendation. For dessert, I had the creme brulee, which was presented in a very shallow bowl. This maximized the amount of caramelized sugar to custard ratio. It was very good. Despite the stellar food, I am very disappointed in Bastien's, specifically due to the dessert menu. The dessert menu did not list any prices for any items. This, in my opinion, is deceptive, as it implies that dessert is included with the entree. The dessert menu was also presented to me after I had finished my entree, without prompt, further selling the illusion that the dessert was included in the meal. Additionally, I overhead a server asking a nearby table what they wanted for dessert, and stating that she could pack their dessert to-go, since they were already full. Paired with a dessert menu that lacks pricing, a reasonable person would be led to conclude that the dessert is covered in the cost of the entree.

    Thank you!! You never disappoint.

Decided on A5 because 1) it's got some great appetizers / starters, 2) love the servers there, and 3) was in the mood to chow down on a hunka-chunka serious steak, and for the first time get a tomahawk slab 'o beef that I had seen before on the A5 menu. Came in early on a Thursday night (6:15 pm) so the place was losing its happy hour crowd and had not yet been swooped down on by the hip dinner crowd. A great time to go. Could not have been better. Started with their crab and shrimp dip app and Japanese milk bread, both of which are stand-out non-steak items on their menu. Ordered the tomahawk steak which is ridiculously large (over 40 ounces (10 of which is from the large rib bone)) and ridiculously good (and ridiculously expensive . . . as in like over $225), along with an order of asparagus. Loved it all. Of course, we split the steak and had no room for dessert. Brought home probably 10 ounces of meat along with some other leftovers which will give us another night of good at-home eating. Bottom line . . . wonderful experience. Pricey but they made it a true celebration for us and it was well worth it. Go. You'll have a great time there, and if you don't want to blow a bundle and its your first time at A5, check them out at happy hour. It's probably the best deal for the best HH food in Denver.

You can thank me later. Next up, we had the carpaccio and crudo with caviar. If I had to choose only one, I would pick the carpaccio but the crudo with caviar is great. Freddie recommended the crudo with caviar and what a wonderful harmony of flavors. These were both standout winners. And the carpaccio meat was incredibly soft. Best carpaccio I've ever had, and I love carpaccio. Last, we had the paglia e fieno (rabbit ragu) and branzino. The branzino was the item I was most excited to try leading to our reservation and it was the item I liked the least. I am a huge branzino fan and order it any place that has it. This was probably my least liked branzino I have had. The olive sauce was just way too strong for this fish. The fish itself was beautiful but I couldn't get past the sauce. I would pass on this, even if you like olives. The rabbit ragu really surprised me and it was my 3rd favorite thing we ordered. I would definitely order that again. When we first walked in we were greeted and brought to our reserved tables upstairs. If you decide to try this place, get a reservation and do downstairs. There is so much more to look at downstairs! Instead, we were brought to a backroom that was much cooler(in temp) and had way less to look at... we felt "put into the corner." It was busy, and it appeared they were short staffed. It took a long time for our server to get to us. She was very sweet and I definitely felt for her, she was really trying! However, it took awhile to get our drinks, the complimentary bread came out after our appetizer and house salads... anything complimentary should come out right away. The food: We got the Rocky Mountain oysters and I actually thought they were good! The cocktail sauce is very tomato forward and the "horseradish sauce" was a joke! There was absolutely no flavor and I am convinced it was just sour cream! If you do order these, ask for their ranch- it was dill flavored and delicious! The house salad was good But wet... like I had water on my plate. If you want a Caesar Salad it will cost an extra 7.50!!!!!!!!! Why!? That doesn't make any sense! The complimentary sourdough was good but the whipped butter had no taste at all... we had to sprinkle some salt on it for it to actually taste decent. We got the New York strip 16oz and the Elk steaks. The New York strip was the worst steak we have ever had! It was supposed to be cooked to a medium but was definitely closer to a medium rare. The butter on top did not have any flavor and was pointless. It had a fair amount of fat on it and the crust tasted "ashy" to us. It was expensive so we ate it, but terrible! The mashed potatoes were not mashed well! I had a whole potato in it! The veggies were mushy and overcooked. The elk steaks were actually very good! I would recommend that! The wild rice was brown rice with a few wild rice pieces... and again mushy veggies! The total price for one alcoholic drink, one bottled soda, a half order of Rocky Mountain oysters, the New York strip and elk steaks was over $200 with tip. We went to the restrooms afterwards and they were disgusting and dirty! If we are spending over $200 on a meal it better be great service, food and ambiance! This missed the mark HEAVILY! If you do feel the need to go here, get a table downstairs, make a reservation, get the Rocky Mountain oysters with the dill ranch and the elk steaks.

The shrimp and corn grits were amazing, and I really loved the aged cheddar mac and cheese. Other dishes like the chickpea croquettes and the chili relleno were also pretty good and rounded out the meal nicely. The wait staff was fantastic. Super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. The restaurant itself has a cool, lively vibe. The only minor downside was that the outdoor heaters were a bit too hot, but that's a very small nitpick. Overall, an easy 5 out of 5 stars. Great food, great service, and a place I'd happily come back to.

We had a great experience here and left really impressed. We ordered the empanadas to start, then…read morethe lamb and steak with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts, and finished with the banana foster cheesecake. The lamb was excellent, but the sweet mashed potatoes absolutely stole the show and easily the best thing we ate all night. Everything was well prepared and flavorful. For an appetizer, two meats, two sides, and dessert, our total came out to $88, which felt like a great value for the quality. Overall, it left a really good impression and we'd definitely come back again.
