We had such a wonderful time at the retro and wonderful Bastien's Restaurant! The food was delicious and there were huge portions. My fiancée and I came to Bastien's for our anniversary. We have a tradition of going out for steak every year, but this time we were looking for something a little more casual than your typical upscale steakhouse. Bastien's ended up being exactly what we were looking for. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere is very old-school and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We weren't very sure how dressed up we needed to be, so I went with a casual button down and she wore a long skirt which made us over dressed compared to most in the restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We saw everything from button-down shirts to T-shirts, shorts, hats, and flip-flops, so you can feel comfortable showing up however you want.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated upstairs, which ended up being a really cool space. With the string lights overhead and the circular room overlooking the dining room below.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with a bottle of Oregon Cabernet Sauvignon, which was surprisingly reasonably priced for a steakhouse. It paired perfectly with our meal and was a great way to kick off the evening. For an appetizer, we ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts. They were prepared with an elote-inspired twist, featuring corn, onion, cotija cheese, and lime crema. I normally love Brussels sprouts, but this was probably the only miss of the evening for me. They weren't bad, just not something I'd order again. Every table also gets complimentary bread and butter. Nothing fancy, but it's always a welcome steakhouse tradition while you're waiting for your meal. For our entrées, my fiancée ordered the filet, and it was solid - perfectly cooked, tender, and probably my favorite steak of the night. Since it was my first visit, I wanted to try Bastien's signature 10-ounce New York strip with the famous sugar rub. I'm usually a filet person, but I wanted the full Bastien's experience. The sugar rub was fun to try. That said, if I had to choose between the two, I'd still take the filet next time. One thing that really sets Bastien's apart is the value. Every steak comes with vegetables (very small portion), your choice of potato, and your choice of soup or salad--all included in the price. That's almost unheard of at steakhouses these days. I had the loaded baked potato, which was excellent, while my fiancée ordered the mashed potatoes, and they were incredibly buttery and delicious. The value here is honestly second to none. Five stars for value alone. To top off the evening, the staff surprised us with a complimentary cheesecake for our anniversary. It was a really thoughtful gesture. Cheesecake isn't usually my first choice for dessert, and my fiancée isn't much of a cheesecake fan, so I ended up eating most of it--but I certainly wasn't complaining. It was delicious. If cheesecake isn't your thing, they also have other desserts available on the menu, but this one was a complimentary gift from the restaurant. Overall, Bastien's delivers exactly what it promises: a relaxed, old-school steakhouse serving quality food at prices that are becoming harder and harder to find. While we'll probably continue choosing some of Denver's more upscale steakhouses for milestone celebrations, Bastien's has earned a future visit from us. Wow, this place was so good!!! I got the sugar steak and the grilled caesar salad. I took one bite into the sugar steak and was so amazed. It had such great flavors oozing out from the steak cut! I got the baked potato and some vegetables on the side. I also opted to get the grilled caesar salad, which was so delicious. I've never had salad grilled before so this was a unique experience, and I might try to do this on my own when I'm cooking. It was so good and it was so interesting to have to cut up my own pieces of the lettuce for the salad, but it worked and it tasted so good. Loved it! I had the New York Strip Sugar Steak with the baked potato and the house salad. The house salad was on the smaller side, but was very good. The potato, was a potato. Nothing special, nothing wrong with it either. The steak was cooked to perfection. A perfect rare all the way through. I had to try their signature sugar steak, which was great. I expected some sweetness, but it was even sweeter than I expected. I am glad I tried it, but I will be trying their other toppings next time. The little rolls with butter before dinner was probably the low point. Again, not terrible, but they are sort of hard and the herb butter is not that great. This is splitting hairs though. I finally got the opportunity to give Bastien's, along Colfax, a try. Bastien's advertises their sugar steaks, so for my birthday dinner, I split one with my bestie. Warning - they do have a split plate fee of $14. If you order the sugar rub, rare or medium rare is the temperature your meat is cooked to. The medium rare was perfectly cooked and oh, so delicious. At first bite, you think, "who has spilled sugar on my steak?!" But, after a couple more bites, it is absolutely delightful. Since this has been one of the few businesses along Colfax that is nearing its 9th decade in business, Bastien's offer an eclectic cocktail menu with some good, old-fashioned drinks to go with their good, old-fashioned decor. I had the gimlet with my meal and yes, I thought I was on the set of Mad Men after ordering. Service was great, as one would expect in this forum. My husband suggested I call the place to see if we can sit and eat at the bar. Perfect, with little crostinis and super buttery and cheesy. For mains, I ordered the blackened salmon with string fries (I was dieting and trying to avoid carbs altogether and didn't want the kitchen working extra hard!) And I subbed the grilled Caesar salad as a side (really tasty and perfectly portioned). The blackened salmon was incredible. I knew it from when I cut the first piece that it was cooked perfectly. The shoe string fries were okay, but when I stop by again, I would opt in for the steak fries-- I do wish they had a bit more salt. When my son asked what I wanted for dinner, I said steak. He absolutely delivered by choosing Bastien's! Granted, the company was stupendous with my son and his fiancee, but there was a vibe here that really left us just plain happy. There's nothing silly about the place, it wasnt that. I believe Bastien's is a Denver institution, been around for decades. It's on the border of a neighborhood and when you walk in, it says, maybe, 1950s in a warm, welcoming, wood trim way. We were seated upstairs, which, as temps rise outside might not be the best seats in the house as they are working on boosting their AC capabilities, but this evening, our booth was just right. Our waitress was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, without hovering or being intrusive. We started with cocktails -- a standard Old Fashioned, a throwback Sloe Gin Fizz, and Bastien's take on a dirty martini called the Filthy Martini (in addition to olive juice, it has pepperoncini juice). They all were great, and that last one has quite a pucker! We moved on to Escargot, which was not served in snail shells and was not swimming in butter, but was topped with a nice cheesy crust and came with bread slices. Salads here were beautifully presented and not overly dressed, which was nice. They are just the right size and make up of all things fresh so you can eat it all (and you'll want to) without getting full before the main course. And now for the steak -- I had the 4x4, which is a 4-ounce filet with four bacon-wrapped scallops. The scallops were a nice size, somewhere between the size of a quarter and a half-dollar, but I'm guessing they're usually more consistently larger, as instead of four, I got six! All the better for sharing! They were delicious. My steak was perfectly cooked medium-rare and served with delicious fresh green beans and the potato special of the evening, which I dont remember much about. Mashed. Others had the 16-oz NY Strip, one with the house famous sugar rub and the other with a coffee rub with avocado chimichurri. The sugar rub was neither overwhelmingly sweet nor super impressive, just a nice thing to try, and the steak was divine! The avocado chimichurri was AMAZING! It has a little bit of a zing to it, so maybe there is some jalapeño in there? And the steak was cooked just right! We had a nice red wine with dinner. The wine list is not overly extensive, just large enough for a variety of choices without making your head spin. I wish there were one or two more red blend options (Daou is not my fave). Dessert was creme brulee topped with a strawberry garnish. Lovely and luscious! Rather than a glass sheet of sugar across the top, it seemed like a large grain sugar was sprinkled over top then broiled, and the result was almost a cobblestone effect of sugar. I LOVE this approach. [Aside: my daughter just returned from France with a picture of the creme brulee she had. The approach was the same -- but Bastien's looked better.] The custard was creamy and light and just enough for us to share on top of already being stuffed. I got a 16 oz Sugar Steak with mashed potatoes and a house salad. I selected Italian for my dressing, but I do wish that I hadn't because it didn't pair well for me with a lot of the flavors in the salad. The salad was still delicious and fresh. As far as the mashed potatoes go, I like a creamier potato, but these were still very yummy and had flavor. Last but not least, the sugar steak. The cut of meat was delicious, it was cooked to perfection, but I am not a sugar steak girl. I prefer my meat very savory. HOWEVER, I was still very intrigued and enjoyed this steak. My server was extremely enthusiastic and gave knowledgeable insights into the menu. The sugar steak was delicious and cooked to perfection; it was an odd sensation to taste sugar on steak, but it works! The twice-baked potato was well-seasoned and assembled perfectly. I also had the French onion soup based on the waitress' recommendation. While the French onion soup was okay, it wasn't spectacular by any means, and I found it to be an unnecessary recommendation. For dessert, I had the creme brulee, which was presented in a very shallow bowl. This maximized the amount of caramelized sugar to custard ratio. It was very good. Despite the stellar food, I am very disappointed in Bastien's, specifically due to the dessert menu. The dessert menu did not list any prices for any items. This, in my opinion, is deceptive, as it implies that dessert is included with the entree. The dessert menu was also presented to me after I had finished my entree, without prompt, further selling the illusion that the dessert was included in the meal. Additionally, I overhead a server asking a nearby table what they wanted for dessert, and stating that she could pack their dessert to-go, since they were already full. Tried to give us some nonsense EXCUSES in a very RUDE way. They showed us the kitchen ticket and our order was processed through at 6:51 pm when we sat down at 6:00 pm. Then they proceeded to say "We didn't want to bombard you guys with food" (why would you assume that we don't want to be bombarded with food and just wait 30 min until we digest the appetizer we just had) when we only ordered one small appetizer. ONE SMALL APPETIZER that takes only 4 bites to finish. Waited for another 20 min with an empty table. We just wanted to leave at this point since we already lost appetite and didn't feel good after the experience. We asked for the check and they suddenly showed up with our order packed in to-go containers with the check. We paid the full check $170 and left without the food. They weren't even busy. Everything we've heard about this Denver legend is true. We loved our experience here. Came on a weeknight (did call ahead and confirm a time) and were seated promptly. Our waiter was incredible-- he seemed to genuinely enjoy working here and loved giving recommendations for our first time visiting. We each got the NY strip steak, one with the sugar rub and the other a fun topping of vodka-infused peaches, caramelized onion and gruyere. The French soup was a touch salty but well-prepared. The twice-baked potato was super hearty but a fun twist from the usual baked potato (it's a half of baked potato topped with a "skinless" half of mashed potato mixed with chives, sour cream and cheese then rebaked to crisp the exterior and re-topped with a bit more sour cream and chives for good measure) Getting to the star of the show-- steak! I'm not a big steak person and there are certainly more high end steakhouses in Denver. But the steak we had here was solid-- I liked the little crispness from the caramelized sugar in the sugar rub, and loved having a sweet balance to the steak with the peaches. The steak was cooked just right. Medium rare was medium rare, not rare and certainly not well done. Unfortunately, we were too full to make room for dessert, which from photos looked great (particularly the pie!) we'll have to try it next time. At first I was going to give this place a 3. I know it's a historical place and the vibes of the atmosphere take you back to the 60s. My husband and I came here for his bday dinner. The reason this place got a 4 because the start wasn't impressive. They start and serve you bread sticks and seasoned butter. The bread was cold and while I love strong flavors, the seasoning in the butter was overpowering. I got the French onion soup to start my porterhouse meal and it was look warm, under seasoned (tasted like canned soup) and the cheese could've been broiled on top. I wad ready to give it a 3 but decided to bump it up since the steak was well cooked and well seasoned. The accompanying veggies were also very good. The baked potato was solid. Our waiter was friendly and a joy. Overall, want a good steak for an affordable price then this is the place to pop in with family or for a date night. read more

Let me begin by saying this restaurant has been around for years - it's an Icon on Colfax. I have been to this restaurant over many, many years and can truthfully say, the steaks and sides are great, the waitstaff are always, always very welcoming and attentative and great to interact with, making you feel so good about your choices. BUT and there is always a BUT the manager who has also been there many years has never changed...he is rude, curt, unwelcoming and at times appears to be a racist to minorities of all walks of life. I would like to say to him, be grateful and humble that you have returning patrons because of the food and waitstaff and try do their best to overlook ignorance! What a wonderful dining experience! The food is delicious and steaks are cooked perfectly to order. The grilled caesar salad and soup along with the sides are wonderful. You can't beat their prices for the quality food at Bastien's. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is lovely. It feels like a warm hug from the past[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. We must mention Patrick our waiter.
