What a beautiful place! This should be a Denver landmark by now. It's so fun and different inside, it makes you feel at ease right when you walk in. The food was great too! The menu just has all the highlights. I was interested in almost every item on the menu. The salads looked delicious too which is always a good sign for me. We got the sugar steak (their staple) as the Wagyu filet, which was divine. And it was cooked to literal perfection at medium rare. It had gorgeous coloring with a dark color on the outside because of the sugar rub and the beautiful pink inside. We were upstairs and the string lighting is adorable. The service was a tad slow (had to ask multiple times for water) and the wine took a bit but otherwise fine. The pricing is extremely reasonable as well. We already booked our next dinner date for a few months out to try their other menu items. Omg and save room for dessert. The list is stacked!!! The crab cakes and bacon wrapped scallops were both phenomenal as well.
My fiancée and I came to Bastien's for our anniversary. We have a tradition of going out for steak every year, but this time we were looking for something a little more casual than your typical upscale steakhouse. Bastien's ended up being exactly what we were looking for. The atmosphere is very old-school and welcoming. We weren't very sure how dressed up we needed to be, so I went with a casual button down and she wore a long skirt which made us over dressed compared to most in the restaurant. We saw everything from button-down shirts to T-shirts, shorts, hats, and flip-flops, so you can feel comfortable showing up however you want. We were seated upstairs, which ended up being a really cool space. With the string lights overhead and the circular room overlooking the dining room below. We started with a bottle of Oregon Cabernet Sauvignon, which was surprisingly reasonably priced for a steakhouse. It paired perfectly with our meal and was a great way to kick off the evening. For an appetizer, we ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts. They were prepared with an elote-inspired twist, featuring corn, onion, cotija cheese, and lime crema. I normally love Brussels sprouts, but this was probably the only miss of the evening for me. They weren't bad, just not something I'd order again. Every table also gets complimentary bread and butter. Nothing fancy, but it's always a welcome steakhouse tradition while you're waiting for your meal. For our entrées, my fiancée ordered the filet, and it was solid - perfectly cooked, tender, and probably my favorite steak of the night. Since it was my first visit, I wanted to try Bastien's signature 10-ounce New York strip with the famous sugar rub. I'm usually a filet person, but I wanted the full Bastien's experience. The sugar rub was fun to try. That said, if I had to choose between the two, I'd still take the filet next time. One thing that really sets Bastien's apart is the value. Every steak comes with vegetables (very small portion), your choice of potato, and your choice of soup or salad--all included in the price. That's almost unheard of at steakhouses these days. I had the loaded baked potato, which was excellent, while my fiancée ordered the mashed potatoes, and they were incredibly buttery and delicious. The value here is honestly second to none. Five stars for value alone. To top off the evening, the staff surprised us with a complimentary cheesecake for our anniversary. It was a really thoughtful gesture. Cheesecake isn't usually my first choice for dessert, and my fiancée isn't much of a cheesecake fan, so I ended up eating most of it--but I certainly wasn't complaining. It was delicious. If cheesecake isn't your thing, they also have other desserts available on the menu, but this one was a complimentary gift from the restaurant. Overall, Bastien's delivers exactly what it promises: a relaxed, old-school steakhouse serving quality food at prices that are becoming harder and harder to find. While we'll probably continue choosing some of Denver's more upscale steakhouses for milestone celebrations, Bastien's has earned a future visit from us. Between the quality of the steaks, the generous portions, and the unbeatable value, we'll definitely be back.
This place is a whole vintage vibe, from its round structure, to its decor, you truly feel like you've stepped back in time. We had a reservation, and were seated within a few minutes of arriving. I ordered a dirty martini, which they also add pickled hot pepper juice to, which gives it a nice zip. They have blue cheese olives (you just have to ask for them, and it's a small up charge). The steaks come with a starter salad, with your choice of dressing. You can order your steak with any preparation, but we were here for the sugar steak we've heard so much about. Let me tell you - it did not disappoint! My steak was cooked to the correct temp (I ordered it rare), the broccoli was good, as was the baked potato. Overall, a delicious meal, I would absolutely come back (and maybe try one of their other steak preparations).
Since my first Bastien's Birthday years ago, this spot has been near and dear to our hearts for special occasion dinners. This Mothers' Day was the latest and possibly the greatest. People either love or hate the 50's decor that Mad Men picked up on decades later. I'm in the former camp and like sitting upstairs most of all. Today, we sat downstairs for the first time. Quiet and cozy with the Rat Pack looking on, the mood was chill, anticipation high. Service is consistently attentive, prompt, and friendly here. Jason greeted us warmly and followed this with soft, warm bread with Anaheim-spiced garlic butter that we could have filled up on and left happy. It's stellar. Drinks arrived quickly: my Great Divide farmhouse ale and a potent White Russian that had mom in silly mode. Mom took her salad to the woodshed. My cup of green Chile corn chowder hit the spot. We were stoked when our server from my last birthday brought our entrees. It felt like home. While the "Sugar Steak" is their calling card and a number of topping combos are available, we went for straight up beef. No regrets. Medium rare? Perfect. Mom's filet mignon torched the one I had at Gallagher's in Las Vegas a week ago--at a much better price. I tried the wagyu coulette (picanha). Unbelievably tender, it's my new Bastien's fave. Side and soup or salad come with your steak--none of the a la carte nickel-and-diming found at most steakhouses nowadays. This sets Bastien's apart. We enjoyed the twice-baked potato and white cheddar mashers. I can vouch for the loaded baked potato and French onion soup, as well. Overall, Bastien's offers unique ambiance, stellar service, solid steaks & value that fancier spots don't have. No BS service fees. It feels like they are here for you, not the other way around. Wow, this place was so good!!! I got the sugar steak and the grilled caesar salad. I took one bite into the sugar steak and was so amazed. It had such great flavors oozing out from the steak cut! I got the baked potato and some vegetables on the side. I also opted to get the grilled caesar salad, which was so delicious. I've never had salad grilled before so this was a unique experience, and I might try to do this on my own when I'm cooking. It was so good and it was so interesting to have to cut up my own pieces of the lettuce for the salad, but it worked and it tasted so good. Overall, I loved the food here and the staff members were so friendly. On the wall, you can also see all the news articles and awards this place has won. I definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Denver and would love to go back in the future.
A legendary steakhouse in Denver that serves "sugar fired" locally sourced beef. I recommend the jalapeño cheese app and Caesar salad for starters. For an adult beverage, try the Smoked Manhattan. I had the 12 Oz dry aged ribeye. Finished with a banana coconut cream pie. All delicious and entree prices span the range to fit your budget
Loved it! I had the New York Strip Sugar Steak with the baked potato and the house salad. The house salad was on the smaller side, but was very good. The potato, was a potato. Nothing special, nothing wrong with it either. The steak was cooked to perfection. A perfect rare all the way through. I had to try their signature sugar steak, which was great. I expected some sweetness, but it was even sweeter than I expected. I am glad I tried it, but I will be trying their other toppings next time. The little rolls with butter before dinner was probably the low point. Again, not terrible, but they are sort of hard and the herb butter is not that great. This is splitting hairs though. I will definitely be back. This is a high quality restaurant. The staff were great and it was a great experience.
I've come here several times for dinner for birthdays, date nights etc. This time was for my graduation and all I put was "graduation" in the comment box when I made a reservation and they surprised me with a cheesecake!! This will always be my favorite steakhouse. The sugar steak is the only way to go!
I finally got the opportunity to give Bastien's, along Colfax, a try. Bastien's advertises their sugar steaks, so for my birthday dinner, I split one with my bestie. Warning - they do have a split plate fee of $14. If you order the sugar rub, rare or medium rare is the temperature your meat is cooked to. The medium rare was perfectly cooked and oh, so delicious. At first bite, you think, "who has spilled sugar on my steak?!" But, after a couple more bites, it is absolutely delightful. Since this has been one of the few businesses along Colfax that is nearing its 9th decade in business, Bastien's offer an eclectic cocktail menu with some good, old-fashioned drinks to go with their good, old-fashioned decor. I had the gimlet with my meal and yes, I thought I was on the set of Mad Men after ordering. Service was great, as one would expect in this forum. With a birthday treat to top it off, Bastien's really made my day special. Thanks!

A classic steakhouse with all the charm! Take a walk back in time with food and service that match the decor. The staff are clearly experience servers with a food critic worthy palate based on their recommendations and descriptions of the dishes. We started with the complimentary rolls which were soft and buttery. Then we started with bacon wrapped scallops, french onion and green chili soups. Both were flavorful and delicious. We each got steak. My husband got the special and I got the classic sugar steak. It was very good but, I thought it would have more unique flavor due to all the hype. I would go back for cocktails and try another steak option.
Wow, where do I begin? I tried making a reservation online last minute (a Friday at like 4:30) but of course nothing was available until 9pm on Resy. My husband suggested I call the place to see if we can sit and eat at the bar. I call and the guy tells me Yes, i can reserve you a table on the bar section but if you just come, it's first come, first serve at the bar. So I accept the bar area table reservation. We arrive and the ambience is so cool and vintage and authentic. We ordered some gin gimlets and a fun seasonal drink called Juniper Harvest w Empress gin, elderflower liqueur, nint, simple syrup and lime. For appetizers, we ordered the escargot. Perfect, with little crostinis and super buttery and cheesy. For mains, I ordered the blackened salmon with string fries (I was dieting and trying to avoid carbs altogether and didn't want the kitchen working extra hard!) And I subbed the grilled Caesar salad as a side (really tasty and perfectly portioned). The blackened salmon was incredible. I knew it from when I cut the first piece that it was cooked perfectly. And the flash fried spinach was TO DIE FOR. INCREDIBLE!!! My hubs ordered the NY Strip and he said it was cooked perfectly and was soooo delicious! He ordered a regular side salad and a twice baked potato which did not disappoint. We cleaned our plates shamelessly. We will definitely return the next time we're in town!!!
Everything we've heard about this Denver legend is true. We loved our experience here. Came on a weeknight (did call ahead and confirm a time) and were seated promptly. Our waiter was incredible-- he seemed to genuinely enjoy working here and loved giving recommendations for our first time visiting. We each got the NY strip steak, one with the sugar rub and the other a fun topping of vodka-infused peaches, caramelized onion and gruyere. The French soup was a touch salty but well-prepared. The twice-baked potato was super hearty but a fun twist from the usual baked potato (it's a half of baked potato topped with a "skinless" half of mashed potato mixed with chives, sour cream and cheese then rebaked to crisp the exterior and re-topped with a bit more sour cream and chives for good measure) Getting to the star of the show-- steak! I'm not a big steak person and there are certainly more high end steakhouses in Denver. But the steak we had here was solid-- I liked the little crispness from the caramelized sugar in the sugar rub, and loved having a sweet balance to the steak with the peaches. The steak was cooked just right. Medium rare was medium rare, not rare and certainly not well done. Unfortunately, we were too full to make room for dessert, which from photos looked great (particularly the pie!) we'll have to try it next time. At first I was going to give this place a 3. I know it's a historical place and the vibes of the atmosphere take you back to the 60s. My husband and I came here for his bday dinner. The reason this place got a 4 because the start wasn't impressive. They start and serve you bread sticks and seasoned butter. The bread was cold and while I love strong flavors, the seasoning in the butter was overpowering. I got the French onion soup to start my porterhouse meal and it was look warm, under seasoned (tasted like canned soup) and the cheese could've been broiled on top. I wad ready to give it a 3 but decided to bump it up since the steak was well cooked and well seasoned. The accompanying veggies were also very good. The baked potato was solid. Our waiter was friendly and a joy. Overall, want a good steak for an affordable price then this is the place to pop in with family or for a date night. read more

I really enjoyed my first Bastien's experience tonight! Bastien's is known as home of the sugar steak which means they are known for cooking steak with a sugar rub. *Spoiler alert - it's delicious!* We went to celebrate a friend's birthday, and enjoyed a great old school steakhouse dinner. In addition to steak, Bastien's serves burgers, chicken, pork, entree salads, some pasta dishes. and salmon. I tried the steakhouse burger (with slim fries), and really enjoyed it! It was delicious and juicy. My partner got the classic NY strip with garlic mashed potatoes. There are vegetarian options here (not much vegan), and a huge cocktail list! The atmosphere is cute with Christmas lights and a vintage feel. Pro tip: definitely call ahead a book a reservation! Overall- 4/5! read more

This is one of Denver's quintessential steakhouses. They've been open forever and there's a reason. Famous for their sugar steaks which definitely live up to the hype, you're going to experience steak like you never have before. Unlike some places that specialize in steaks, Bastien's also knows how to do their sides and appetizers right. The atmosphere of Bastien's brings back that old school gentleman's supper club feeling with its iconic building and charming interior. Service is always impeccable but not a stop you want to make if you're in a hurry, and you definitely need reservation. Accessibility: This is an old building. Parking is always tough in this area and Bastien's is no exception although it does have a free parking lot. There are double doors to get inside at the bottom of a steep ramp, the outside door is moderately heavy but the inside doors are light. There are three stories without an elevator so make sure to indicate you need the main floor. The women's bathroom itself is spacious and has a grab bar, but the door to get into the bathroom is very narrow. They do have their menu online- but you don't need it you should just order a sugar steak. read more

Patrick, our server, was top notch. It was our 1st time there and he made it such a memorable time. The food was fantastic and they really know how to space out the timing for bringing the appetizers, salad and main food. They even gave us a piece of cheesecake for our anniversary. Only thing I'd complain about is the price of wine as 1 glass cost as much as a bottle I could purchase at the store. read more

My husband picked this restaurant and it was his favorite place we had our whole trip. I didn't care for the seasoning on the filet but it was cooked correctly and tender. I'm not a fan of the lettuce used for the salads. He didn't care for the balsamic on the grilled Caesar salad, but he did love the sugar ribeye and white cheddar mashed potatoes. The crème brûlée was pretty good. environment was nice, a little loud overall. service was great. read more

Liked that there's a parking lot there. It's a very old school vibe which I cool. We had a reservation for 6 and an extra person showed up and they nicely accommodated. The food and service was good. When I ordered, I had the impression that the soup was part of my meal, but I was charged extra for it. read more

The best way I can describe this Denver local legend is that it's like being in an episode of Mad Men that takes place in a giant yurt, and I mean that in all the best ways. It's retro, it's cozy, it's 1000% Colfax and they've done a really nice job keeping the nostalgia. Oh right and the food is pretty dang good too. As somebody else mentioned, the steak sandwich is the sleeper deal here if you need to save but want to taste what Bastien's is known for. While in Denver for the weekend celebrating my wife birthday, I wanted to take her to a steakhouse that wasn't pretentious and stuffy. When I found Bastiens on Yelp, I knew right away this was it. The absolutely loved this place. It was nice, but not too nice. The food was delicious and affordable. I definitely recommend this place to anyone. read more

My partner and I stopped in right at open, our server Laura was very knowledgeable. After my Partner was from Wisconsin she correctly guessed he wanted his old fashioned with a splash of sprite. Just celebrated my birthday here a week ago and it was just as fabulous as ever. There were many holiday parties, however, Kami took excellent care of us. The special was Wagyu and it melted in your mouth. I tried the bread pudding this time and it was phenomenal. Will keep celebrating special occasions here! read more

Maybe it's just me.. but I didn't particularly enjoy the sugar rub and a side of david (3 shrimp with hollandaise sauce on top) I want steaks to be juicy and full of flavor but maybe I'm not used to steaks being sweet. The taste is definitely different than what I am used to. We sat upstairs and the ambiance was relaxing but a bit loud from other tables. Mashed potatoes were soft and savory. Vegetables were a bit burnt and overdone. Service was ok at first but near the end maybe it was getting busier and server didn't check up on us after until we asked for the check. Not sure if I would come back again. But I visited hearing my friend rave about this place and it's long history. Was a bit disappointed but it could just be my own personal preference in taste. read more

Great family style steakhouse Unique ambience and architecture. Friendly service I highly recommend the sugar steak (the sweetness is subtle) and dry aged steak. Onion soup was too salty and pork chop was so so ( not tender enough) It was a special occasion and they served complimentary cheese cake. It's been around for 87 years and in its unique owner designed carousel structure since '58. I driven past it many a time and started saying we should go there. Last night we finally did and it did not disappoint. Great appetizers! We had bacon wrapped scallops on flash fried spinach cooked to perfection. I tried the Bigger Better cocktail--bourbon, amaretto, brown sugar simple syrup, black walnut bitters and a lucrado cherry. Sweet and delightful. I went with the classic 10 ounce New York strip steak medium rare with the sugar rub and steak fries and grilled Caesar salad. The steak was great--juicy and flavorful with a hint of sweetness and other spices. The fries were amazing--creamy in the inside, crisp on the outside. Who would have thought grilling the romaine would have such an impact. My partner had the special wagyu culotte, a rare cut to see anywhere. His was rare on cheddar mash potatoes with a tasty French onion soup. He chose the black and tan preparation which is mushrooms, demiglace and Gorgonzola. Very savory. Breadsticks with a savory garlic butter start you off and along with the potato option, soup or dinner salad, and vegetables are included. The grilled Caesar was well worth the upgrade. We chose from an impressive wine list two different red wines to accompany our dinners. Montepulciano and Sangiovese, both wonderful. Finally we somehow squeezed in a slice of coconut banana crème pie with fresh brewed coffee for me and Nespresso for them. The service was incredible--informative and attentive. The vibe was very old school steakhouse with copper accents, etched logos, lots of tucked in divided spaces for groups of diners. It was busy with customers but a relaxed experience. I was absolutely blown away by this place, the food was outstanding and our waitress was so passionate about food and cocktails. I felt like she made our night into a dining experience and I am still dreaming about my bigger better old fashioned, my filet mignon with a double baked potato, and the greatest Brussels I've ever eaten (Mexican street corn special). It has a cozy atmosphere, and it's on Colfax in the most unlikely place. Do yourself a favor and try it, you definitely won't be disappointed. read more

I have lived in Denver for 10 years and this was my first time here. So grateful that I decided to come here. The steaks were amazing. Not your typical over priced steakhouse. Great quality food, reasonable prices and excellent friendly service. NY Strip Steak 16oz. Bone In 10/10. The steak toppers both the coffee run and southwestern were amazing 10/10. The banana cream pie was spectacular, second best I have ever had 10/10. The stuffed mushrooms appetizer was very good 8.5/10. The salads were pretty good, they came with the meal, we both had wedges 7/10. The other appetizer was the caprese tortellini skewers, pretty good, a little on the small but great flavor 7/10. The bread on the table was good with seasoned onion or garlic butter 8/10. I am looking forward to getting to come back again soon. A great spot for a night out or a date! read more

No I do not think it is a normal item. Maybe on special occasions but I'm not aware of any.
