We looked up top steaks in Denver and found this retro place with unique atmosphere and great customer service. The food was amazing. We started with the bareback shrimp - the flavor was spot on and super spicy! We ordered the stroganoff, sugar rub New York strip and the 4x4. The food was cooked to perfection. Ok bear with me on this trip down memory lane. I actually took my prom date to Bastians and to find it's still open after all this time was astonishing! I have never had meal here you order a medium rare steak and that's what you get they have never screwed up a steak! Their vegetable's are fresh and desserts delicious. It is seriously a walk down memory lane every time I go there and I love it the ambiance seriously hasn't changed. The service is always on point before during and after the meal and if you like cocktails their bar is awesome. I recommend a reservation but I have walked in and had dinner at the bar a time or 2 and still had a fantastic meal and service. 5 stars read more

Service was impeccable. It was a busy Saturday night but our server Lara took the time to explain everything and truly seemed to care about the food and the restaurant. She recommended drinks I had the Love Potion and it was delicious, my husband had one of their limited old fashion. He didn't care for it much, he thought it was took sweet. We both had steaks. I had the ribeye sugar style with a house salad with ranch and mashed potatoes. Pretty sure this was the best ranch I've ever had. I'm going to be craving it for a long time. Steak was cooked well, the sugar style was sweet but not too sweet. It provided a nice char on the outside. Hubs had the wagyu David style with a grill Caesar salad and twice bake potato. Apparently one of Denver's institutions... restaurant looked a little date. Still made a reservation nonetheless... had to cancel three times and reschedule. Yesterday, we came in. It was packed. We were escorted to take our table... and man, was I glad I got a table! Super old school, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra posters on the walls, dimly lit ambience and old school Italian music in the air. We had steaks. Man, great portion sizes, the sugar rub on my rib eye was phenomenal, made a nice charred glaze on medium rare meat! So juicy and tasty! We also had the new work strip grilled and prepared same style. Soooooo good. No culinary acrobatics but good ole' home cooked perfection. Desserts were marvelous too-- we had a sizzling peach pie a la mode and a rich velvety chocolate cake. The pie was a nice mix of hot and cold and sweet and tart. Cannnot go wrong with that one. And if you have a sweet tooth... this is the chocolate cake you imagine when you think chocolate cake. Again, simple, but CORRECT. We left super full. And we will keep this one a secret. Though it was our first time, Bastien's is an "old tradition" here in Denver, for better and worse. The better is that it *feels* like a classic steakhouse -- not trying to be super-snooty fancy or pretentious. And its longevity shows they know what they are doing. The menu has something for everyone (except for the couple who came in and then immediately left because she didn't see a non-beef dish she wanted), but it pretty straightforward. On the steak side you can get NY Strip, Rib-Eye, or Filet Mignon, with a dozen different preparations, including their famous "sugar steak". The worse is ... well, the place is more than a little worn. There's a lot of dust in the grillwork by the lower floor booths. Wires run through weird places. Antique decor clips still show up where they oughtn't. The place could use a freshening up. The service was very good -- slow at times (they were apparently slammed with more guests than expected for a Wednesday night), but friendly and helpful in an "old school" comfortable way. We had multiple cocktails from the menu. All were well done. Foodwise things were mixed, though overall good. I went for the "sugar steak" -- grilling with sugar to give a sweet crust to the meat. An interesting technique, but, I decided, not my cuppa. But there were plenty of other options for the next time there. My ribeye was a little tough. The twice-baked potato was not as cheesy as expected, but the mashed potatoes were quite good, and the steak fries awesome. The mixed veggies were good, and the french onion soup a smash. Only one dessert was ordered, the chocolate cake, but it was huge (all three of us nibbled off of it and were content). Overall, I'd give this a 4.5; 4 downplays some great elements here, 5 ignores some flaws. I'll round up, though, for the experience. Dinner wasn't cheap, but we felt we got value for the money. It's not in our part of Denver, but we'll definitely remember Bastien's for another special night out. read more

I can't believe I have not reviewed this place yet. Silly me, missing one of my favorite joints in town. Let's talk ambience and setting first. It's in a great building. I was surprised that it wasn't an original building but when they did build it, they did it right. I love sitting upstairs and looking up at the ceiling. I'm not sure it's terribly unique but it catches my eye. They have a cool sunken bar that looks fun to sit at as well. The round shape gives an overall interesting perspective for diners. The service is great. It's mostly family ran which is fun. The staff know the history of the place, the family, and food. I doubt it could be any different and still have the charm it has with one on one service. The menu is robust with steak and prep styles. I'm a black and tan fan. Side note they're big for their sugar steak and I think that works well on the steak sandwich but I didn't love it on the steak. My goal is to try all the varieties of prep styles. I do come here enough. Haha. There's only been one item I didn't love but that had zero to do with prep or dish I just didn't like the flavor. The pasta, I'd say is a solid skip but again I'm sure those who would like it do. As for sides, the wedge salad is delicious. The French onion also great. The desserts are fantastic but I love the banana pie and now the whit chocolate bread pudding. They were out of banana one night. They also do a few cool drink choices with great appetizers. I loved the stuffed mushrooms and they have something that makes me blush everyone I see it on the menu. You can go and you'll see it. There you have it. I love this place. read more

The unasuming exterior is provided the grand oresentation of the restaurant's ambience upon entrance. Great wine list and great food. I got the sugar steak medium rare cooked perfectly; it was a little under-seasoned for my taste but nothing table salt couldn't remedt. The apetizers were amazing. We got the escargot, muscles and the ahi tuna. The escargot was cooked with a lot of cheese which overpowered its natural earthy taste but it was still delicious. We paired the Ahi tuna with a french rose and it stole the show. The wine list was sparce but covered all the palatal bases. It is a little pricey, but it was well worth the splurge to experience a historical restaurant. read more

We came here for a friends birthday on a Saturday night. Glad we made reservations as it was reasonably busy. We ordered a bunch of different drinks which was the highlight of the trip. Some of the drinks they even make and pour right at your table. We started with some complimentary bread and I opted for a Caesar salad which was delicious. A complete joke for a steakhouse. Ordered a med rare ribeye, I received a med well New York. My parents owned a steakhouse I know my meats and temps they are cooked to, blindfolded. The owner or manager troll gaslighted me and said it was correct cut and cooked to perfection and refused to provide me with a new steak. I have never in my life been treated so poorly. I had the black and tan new york strip and it was delicious. The steak was well cooked and the sides were well balanced. I am glad we did not skip dessert because the sizzling apple pie was dreamy. I would definitely recommend this steakhouse and cannot wait to go back. With respect to seating, I would suggest booking a table in the upper floor. The lower floor is also nice, but some tables might feel less nicer than others. The bar has a different vibe and totally worth considering if that's your style. read more

I've been a patron of Bastien's for a little over a decade and anytime I come to Denver I get a group to go for dinner. Other family members have been guests for longer and love it too. Bastien's food is amazing! My only complaint tonight would be that the twice baked potatoes were over seasoned. In my experience the service has always been "just okay" on occasion the servers can be very rude. This experience confirmed from friends who eat there as well. The service was fantastic and we had a great dinner. When it was time to pay the check the server made some errors splitting the bill. We asked her to correct it, she came back and there were still a few errors. Our party was 6 people and we had 4 separate checks. After some time a blonde haired woman came around the corner snapping that the drink had been removed. She rudely said we could just Venmo each other the difference to settle the bill discrepancy. No one got upset or angry, after we paid our checks. Which mine was still incorrect and I got charged for a wedge salad I didn't have the manager approaches my grandmother and says that we need to part ways because there's always problems when we visit. She then states our server is in tears over something another guest at our table said. None of us could recollect anything said that would cause someone to cry. The manager then stated that they don't split checks, and backtracked that after I told her the restaurant should've said that upfront for us to be prepared. Shame on you Bastien's! Your waitstaff messed up the checks! You're I'm assuming manager was completely out of line and while we said nothing it was rude and disrespectful! For your other manager to approach and say we were the problem is ludicrous! You've lost my business and many others over this and I will be posting this review everywhere. read more

Some of the best bites of food I have had in a long time! I've wanted to try this place for a while but I knew it would be pricey, so thought I might wait for a special occasion. Luckily, I stumbled across them on Groupon, making this meal a remarkably good value. I called for carry out and they gave me plenty of options for a potato side and soup or salad appetizer. I went with the mashed potatoes and cream of mushroom soup at the recommendation of the woman taking my order. The soup was some of the best I have ever had - intensely flavorful and a variety of vegetables. The meat was cooked to my liking and the "black and tan" preparation put it over the top. Walking into Bastien's is like stepping back into time. I love the interior with Rat Pack photos, good music, and lighting. The service is top notch. We had a reservation, and they had a special table waiting for us with water already poured. Our server was very attentive, offering suggestions and great conversation. My husband tried their special Wagyu steak, which came special from a small CO farm. He said the meat was so tender, perfectly cooked and very tasty. I had the Filet with Black &Tan toppings, and it was perfection. We also treated ourselves to their stuffed mushrooms as appetizer, and I'm glad we did, they are made fresh in the kitchen with their own ground beef. Although we were stuffed we pushed the limits and got dessert! I sampled my husbands house made coconut and banana crème pie. It was the best I have tasted. Simply refreshing. Super cute place! On colfax but don't let that fool you, this is a nice restaurant with a super cute upstairs that resembles a fancy string-light enhanced treehouse. It's a beautiful ambiance perfect for date night! The beef stroganoff and veal marsala were absolutely delicious! Portions are large so we all had leftovers. We took way too long to try this place. We have lived here for over 5 years and tonight was the first time we tried this restaurant. From the outside, I was expecting overhyped and average-at-best steaks. For how long this place has been opened, I accidentally set the bar pretty low and left incredibly surprised as to how much I loved everything! We walked in with no ressies and waited the full 45 mins at the bar for our party of 2. It's such a throwback restaurant - perfectly frozen in time. What luck we had to be seated upstairs - yes, there is an upstairs! The layout of this restaurant is crazy. I can't believe how comfortably roomy the place was. Not a huge restaurant, but well spaced for diners. Mind you, it's a weeknight and we weren't here to leisurely dine, so no apps just entrees tonight. The hubs ordered the 10 oz NY strip with the famous sugar rub. I ordered the 10 oz NY strip with the "black and tan" topping. Both were very delicious and we were quite stuffed. We have been customers of Bastien's for the last 25 yrs. In the past, I have raved about your atmosphere, staff courtesy, promptness, and wonderful attention to needs of its patrons. For the last 5 yrs, our budget has not allowed us to partake in dining as often, so I really look forward to the Famous Sugar Rib Eye on the Bone steak I so love and look forward to, especially for my birthday or Anniversary. Well, last night, I attended with a party of 14 for a combined retirement of my husband and birthday for our brother in law. As always the staff was fantastic, along with the atmosphere. I looked forward to once again ordering my favorite steak. When it arrived, I was holding my 4 mo. old grandson, and couldn't start eating right away. This way we gave our daughter a chance to start to enjoy her meal. Well, for the price of the steak, I was really disappointed in the picture of what I saw on my plate. It was much thinner but looked as I had ordered it ....well seared and Med/Rare on inside. It did not taste like it usually did. There was no sugar steak taste to it, but a dry rub taste instead. As I was busy with my grandson, I didn't want to make a fuss about the steak so I took a few bites of it and ate my broccoli and a few string potatoes with were cold. I thought about maybe my taster was off or something last night, and maybe to have it for breakfast with an egg, it would taste better. Nope. It was NOT a sugar steak. So disappointed! There were other people at the table that had asked my opinion on what to order since we dine there often, and I recommended the Sugar Steak. Boy, I hope they got what they ordered. Bastien's Steaks are simply incredible. You can cut them with your butter knife they are so tender. And always perfectly cooked. To add to your dining experience, always order the GRILLED Caesar Salad. Absolutely incredible. And for dsssert... choose them all. You cannot go wrong. The cocktails, wine and soft drink service were impeccable, and our waitress was completely capable- and never intrusive. Remember... this is the home of the SUGAR STEAK. GET IT! We had an all around great dinner last night at Bastien's! First, I can't imagine what's it's been like to own a restaurant these past few years. I'm glad to see Bastien's - a family-owned institution in Denver - survive with flying colors! I'd been to Bastien's a few times, but the hubs has been wanting to try it. First, we know our steaks - Ruth's Chris, Shannahan's, Elway's, Ocean Prime, Perry's, etc. We love to discuss where our fave steak in Denver is ... & now we can add Bastien's to the list! The sugar rub is pretty epic - I took it a step further & order the southwest sugar version & it was also great. I LOVE Colorado green chili so this was an awesome option! Bastien's homemade green chili is great. Where can you go to a steakhouse & get all of the sides included. We both had the rib eye with two sides & had 1/2 our meal to bring home! Cocktails were great too... Prices - although high like everywhere - are quite a lot less than the places I mention above. $57 for a bone in Rib Eye with sides is a 'bargain' compares to an Elways or Shannies! Our server Cammy (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) said she was the daughter of the chef - this place really IS a family place - & SHE MADE OUR NIGHT!!! Fun, friendly, funny... she was fantastic! For people complaining about the 'tired decor' - uhhhh, yeah, if you ready anything about Bastien's you know that it's part of Denver's history & that's part of the 'old school charm'... enjoyed feeling like we'd gone back in time to a place where I would have visited as a youngin' with my late father. After a long day at the jobsite I needed a dinner to remind me of being back home. I did a quick steakhouse search and found Bastien's. It was a 34 min drive but after looking at pictures I knew this is what I needed. I walked in and the place was busy. Luckily for me one space was left at the bar. I sat down and quickly struck up a conversation with two guys next to me that grew up in Wisconsin like me. That right there made me feel relaxed and I found my happy place. Everything from that point was fantastic. My shrimp cocktail was fresh and tasty. My bone in rib-eye was just what I needed to replenish what the day took out of me.
