I was a little disapointed moving from San Antonio and seeing that this was one of the authenintic places that Anchorage had to offer after we had eaten there. The prices were extremely high for the volume of food you recieved and I feel like the price was for it being "authentic". While I did feel it was more traditional, I would attribute most of it to being just from a different area of Mexico or background that is typical not the American Mexican restaurants. The food took quiet awhile to come out and that made it that much worse. While the food was ok, it was nothing to rave about flavor wise and I had just expected more from a location that made it apparent to be one of the only authentic places locally.

Trivia: What soda brand founded in 1950 by Don Francisco has a name meaning "little jug"? Bonus question: Where is it bottled? The flavor profile is of the highest level. The Jarritos selection is the best I've seen anywhere. I didn't even know there were so many flavors. Authentic, delicious. Things I would want to know/confused me: Is there complimentary salsa? - I asked and he pointed me to the menu so I ordered the 10 dollar salsa. It was huge! And freshly made. He also brought out two small salsas with the chips. A red and green. All the salsas had some kick. What is .... (Like 9 different things on the menu)? - the menu is in Spanish and there are many things I didn't know. Things that sounded like specialties. And here's the thing: everything was so good, I'm up for going and trying all the things just to find out. What's the protocol on the salsa bar? - is it self serve? Is it only an onion style pico and some marinated peppers that are SPICY? What was the empty mortar for? It was late so I don't think things that had run out were being stocked. What's the protocol on paying? - I went up the counter. Would they have delivered a bill? What is the correct way to transfer salsa from the mortar to the takeout container? - this was a new experience. Heaviest transfer EVER. I was both worried if spillage and crushing a hand, toe, or kidney. There's a beautiful mural across the back wall with El Castillo. Does that technically make this Mayan food?

This is a small place, nothing fancy but it's giving authentic Mexican flavors. I'm so glad Anchorage has a little place like this now. They informed us they have been open for a year. I will say, the guacamole was a bit too salty but still fresh and delicious. The nachos were INCREDIBLE, something about the flavors, man!! Honestly some of the best nachos I've ever had. I'd like to try the tacos next time. Check them out for dine in or take out!

Banana Leaf Tamales were excellent. Enjoyed the Tacos Asada.. Hubby didn't care for the Mole Pollo, ( but I messed up ordering from the app, I was supposed to get enchiladas). Mole had more spicy ( cumin) versus nutty flavor. Hint of cocoa. Champarrado stayed hot a long time in traditional cups and had a good flavor.

This place has THE BEST and most authentic Mexican food in Alaska hands down. The service was great, and the restaurant is clean, cozy and filled with beautiful art and style.

The staff were welcoming, pleasant, and eager to be of service. The dining area was clean and was relatively busy for the size of the restaurant. The food is the highlight for sure, and of course the reason a restaurant opens it doors. The handmade tortillas were a great authentic touch to well seasoned meat and fresh toppings on our tacos. The other dish we ordered were the steak nachos. Melty cheese, onions, cilantro, sliced avos, with perfectly done (plentiful) steak bits. I didnt try it, bit it looked delicious. The eaters of the plate enjoyed it. Thanks for bringing a new and delicious taco spot to Anchorage!

The food was really good and so was the service. I tried the pozole and my daughter had flautas. If you can't handle spice you should let your sever know. The only con was that it's a little pricey.

Enchiladas mole (comes with rice and beans)

Mole. I've never made it myself, but I always order it when I get the chance. This time, I went with the enchiladas mole. One word: complex. Smoky, spicy, earthy, peppery, cinnamony--layers of flavor that kept unfolding with every bite. I've never had mole quite like this. Not "different" in a bad way - just different from what my limited experience has taught me to expect. The portion was generous, easily enough for two. The richness of the mole-covered enchiladas paired beautifully with the simplicity of the beans and rice. It was a perfect balance of bold and comforting. Everyone else at my table ordered tacos with handmade tortillas and left happy. One of my favorite things about the place was the crowd itself: a couple speaking Samoan at one table, two Spanish-speaking families at others. The sheer diversity made it feel like a café at the UN. Despite being busy, the staff were friendly and attentive. All in all, a memorable meal in a vibrant and humble setting. This was my first time here, and we'll definitely be back.

I've been looking for good and authentic Mexican food since I left California. I wanted to start by saying I only knocked a star off because they forgot my rice and beans! However, I had 4 tacos, 3 Chicharrón and 1 asada. The tortillas are hand made and they were very tasty and soft! The asada might've needed a little more seasoning but it was very tasty. The Chicharrón wasn't the traditional one I'm used to like the crunchy type it's been smothered in green chile but it is quite flavorful! The place itself was clean and reminded me of traditional Mexican restaurants. The service was good too and the staff was friendly! Overall I definitely recommend trying this place out!

I would describe the interior as "spartan" and not really cosy. It didn't have that eclectic colourful look common to many Mexican restaurants, and nor were they playing the Mexican kind of music either. Tables and chairs were plain wood. Their large parking lot was full, however when we got inside, only one other table was occupied, so I'm not sure who was using their parking lot, but it wasn't diners. It was brightly lit though, and we got a table near the window so I could look outside. Considering only two tables were occupied, it took an inordinately long time for someone to come and take our order. I ordered the Southwest Tacos (crispy) and asked for ground beef, these were $5, I wasn't really sure how many would be served, and assumed possibly two? I also order the Parmesan cilantro fries to be my side. Husband got the Serrano's Burrito with carnitas, this came with rice and beans. We also ordered chips and salsa which was served immediately. There were lots of chips, 3 salsas and pico de gallo. The food came out very quickly, and our server was very nice. I got 1 taco (had I known I was only getting 1, I'd have paid extra to get 2) Ok, the positive - the fries were plentiful, and nice and crispy, but I was disappointed that the Parmesan was the kind out of a jar, that you shake on. I had built myself up to melted grated Parmesan, and I didn't find much cilantro either, and I love cilantro. Fortunately there was plenty in the salsa, and so I just dipped my fries in that. My taco was disappointing. The ground beef was bland, lacked seasonings, and the taco was just not very filled with things. He loved his Burrito, pronounced it delicious. I tried his rice and beans. The rice was decent, but the beans were too smooth and homogenous for my taste - I like them to have some lumpy bits of bean in. Another plus - they were playing really good music. Totally my taste (but not my husbands) as I like more modern music. Current tunes, stuff I'd have on my playlist in my car, to torture my husband with, so i liked that. Good. Service, after initially waiting a while, and food came out fast after we ordered + decent music. Food could be improved though.

We took it back to our Airbnb and we repurposed and used the leftover food into new dishes for breakfast the next day. Was this the best Mexican food ever.... well no, but it wasn't horrible. I got the Chile Verde Burrito and it was good. I think that the dishes were basic and there was nothing that took it over the top. Nothing special, no different seasoning. Even though we didn't finish the food, we ordered dessert and shared. The flan.....OMG! Yes, yes, yes! I would go back for the flan. It tasted like it had coconut, but when we asked they said that it didn't. Hmmm, not a bad thing that it tasted like coconut in my world, it just elevated the taste.

I usually wouldn't eat Mexican food in Alaska those two don't really go together in my brain being from California but I wanted to give it a try anyway lol I ordered the Cilantro Shrimp Molcajete and some chips and salsa on the side. First I will say I don't see why certain restaurants charge for chips and salsa it should be free in my opinion. The salsa lacked flavor and was more sweet than anything. (I asked for the spiciest salsa they have) and the order was $8.. I get it for the size I was surprised but that salsa wasn't good. Moving on to the main dish tho we have the Molcajete which was really good in my opinion. It came out SIZZLING! and the size of it wasn't what I was expecting. So if you're hungry I would def get one of those entrees ! The flavor of the fajita mix was good and the amount of shrimp you get was super filling. That dish was about $38 with the shrimp. The bartender was nice and asked me if I was doing okay a few times and also made sure my water was filled which was great he seemed really knowledgeable of all the good food recommendations and was pretty quick with service so employees were cool ! All in all I enjoyed my early dinner in a nice place that played good Latin music and I liked that it's walking distance from my hotel. I would eat here again one day and try some of their tacos next because I hear they are pretty good. The decor works really well, but I found the branding a bit confusing. The menu leans heavily on Mexican flavors, but the restaurant doesn't really call itself a Mexican place, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. On my first visit, I had the duck confit tacos with an Eddie's Tropical drink. The tacos were amazing, tender and full of flavor, and the drink was perfectly balanced. On my second visit, I got the rockfish tacos. They were tasty but way too spicy for me, which took away from the flavor. We also tried guacamole and queso fundido on both visits. The guac was solid, nothing fancy but good. The queso fundido is super cheesy and greasy, and once it cools down, it's tricky to eat. I've learned my lesson there. Service was mixed. The first visit, our server was okay. The second time, the server was excellent, very friendly and attentive. Both visits we had reservations and were seated right away, even during tourist season, which was a nice surprise. Overall, Tequila 61 is a beautiful spot with some standout dishes. The duck confit tacos are a must-try. Some dishes could use a little work, but the atmosphere, drinks, and high-end feel make it worth a visit. Just watch out for the spice and maybe share the queso fundido with a few friends.
