(I don't know if Golden Gate Bakery is open because I walked by last week and it's all boarded up.) I bought 2 here from Ruby King (cash only) and it costs total of $2.20. The crust was very flaky and the custard not too sweet. It also was not too greasy. You can tell by looking at the paper cup after you eat it how greasy it is. I would say it was almost comparable to Golden Gate Bakery's except there could have been just a little more custard. Great price. I like to help these Chinatown businesses because so many have closed due to COVID. I will be back for more goodies. Go on a Sunday when street parking is free. Another of my favorites Chinese bakeries - hk style in Oakland Chinatown. We grew up going here every weekend with family so definitely is a place that we love to support. Same family runs the place for at least the past 15 plus years or more. They have a delicious assortment including pineapple buns- both plain and filled with red bean, egg custard, or taro. This is my go to place for the coconut tarts and the curry beef tarts. Price has gone up over the years, but I think it's in line with prices going up everywhere and still reasonable prices overall compared to sf or peninsula/South Bay. Affordable and very tasty classic Chinese bakery in Oakland, worth supporting and close for Eastbay people, it's worth coming here since the quality is higher compared to some of the bakery franchises like Paris or Sheng Kee. Their puffed pastries with curried beef and bbq pork are better than anything else I've had in the area, the outside layer is crispy and you get soft crunchy layers inside, there is also a lot of fillings so you get a bit in every bite. The meat taste is perfect as well, with the curried beef being made with the right curry powder and slightly red chashu color on the bbq pork. Whenever I come I always wish I bought more. I also always get the egg tarts, they have the same crunchy and soft layers as the puffed pastries and I like this style much more than the egg tarts at golden gate bakery in SF. Ruby King Cafe is another bakery in Chinatown. A lot of the older Chinese men hang out at this location like it's a social club. When you walk in you will definitely feel their eyes on you, so be prepared because these guys people watch for sure. Weird. But as far as the bakery itself, they make a variety of things but it seems like many come for the egg tarts. How do the egg tarts here compare? I would say they are ok. The crust is too thick but it's still flaky despite it's bad crust to custard ratio. Texturally it's fine. The tart itself is much smaller in size as well. Called yesterday for an order of 20 egg tarts. The woman on the phone said it would be $22 at $1.10 each. I told her I'd pick them up at 7:30 in the morning. I get there and ask for my order, and they seemed frustrated? I'm not sure what the issue was. She knew I called in yesterday so it might've been the same woman I spoke with on the phone. They put together my order and went to the back to grab more. I bought them for my preschool class to try new treats. So obviously I was worried when they seemed to have an issue with my order. I paid $22 and left. There weren't many spaces left to park on the street and when I left there was a truck blocking the way. Despite the issues I ran into, the egg tarts were good quality. When it's my turn, the lady was really nice and patient with me. All together I spent $10 and got a full box of yummy food. We couldn't finish them all yesterday so I will update my review after I try the rest. What I got: 2 Egg custards ($1.10 each) very flaky outside and the custard in the middle is less sweet than most, just the way I like! I would rate it 5 stars. I like this sweetness level better than the one from Napoleon Bakery across the street. 2 Coconut twist ($1.25 each) fresh, flaky and less sweet. I am a fan of their cocktail bun, red bean bun, and taro bun mostly, but their egg custard tarts and char siu bao are really solid as well. I have ordered birthday cakes from them as well, which they do a really good job on (pictured). This is a busy shop, but for good reason. They occasionally run out of certain items but are constantly baking them, so at times, certain items can be luck-of-the-draw in terms of availability. I just adore Chinese bakeries. My absolute favorite was Victor's Bakery on Taraval in SF. I heard they changed locations a few years back and their new name is Mr. Bread. Anyways... Whenever I go to a Chinese bakery, my two must have items are dan tat and cocktail buns. Ruby King offers both at affordable prices. The dan tat has a flaky crust and the egg custard tart is simply wonderful. We always fight over the last one in the box. My kids love the cocktail buns especially when eaten warm. They are fluffy and lightly sweet. The ladies here are friendly and efficient. And you will always find a group of older men enjoying their buns and coffee and reading the newspaper. Ruby King is my new Victor's. I don't come here often but when I do, I purchase by the dozen. Today is my husband's birthday so I also bought him a mixed fruit cake to celebrate. Flaky shell and the custard filling was smooth and had the right sweetness. What a bargain at $1 each! The curry beef puff shell was very flaky as well will a tasty curried beef filling. Good sized puff tasty puff for a reasonable $1.40. Ruby King was not busy as my go-to's, as I just walked in and ordered. The server was friendly too.
