Poor, old, formerly great Fenton's. I grew up in Piedmont, I've been going there all of my life. Nowadays, I avoid going in, because the service was so rude so many times, I gave up. But, my boss orders us food from Fenton's via Doordash to be delivered to our Oakland office from time to time. Last several times in a row, it's been pretty dang bad, (the potato chips always taste fishy!) but today (8/5/26) it was literally garbage. We had 2 egg salad sandwiches and a jalapeno burger, plus two milkshakes. The egg salad sandwiches had to be straight up tossed out. Just not edible. The egg salad was sooo watery, it was like a soup. Just dripping and running down out of the bread. Also, a HEAVY mustard taste, overpowering everything else. The burger had a piece of something (literally) translucent on it, apparently their idea of a slice of cheese? And the accompanying fries were COLD. The toasted almond milkshake was so runny it was like a flavored water. Not at all a creamy consistency, I don't even think they made it with milk, it seemed to be just a tiny bit of ice cream, some water and a lot of ice cubes (still visible in the shake). Just nasty. The other milkshake seemed ok. Of course, with the order being from DoorDash, it's near-impossible to get any real support, so it's just basically a total loss. I don't know if Fenton's just doesn't GAF, since they're always busy anyways, OR if they need to pay their employees more in order to attract the sort of person who's capable of being trained to care to do things correctly, but it's just really a bummer that such a neat, fun, old legacy business is allowing itself to disappoint customers and turn into a big mess like this. Fentons has a long history and is considered a staple in oakland/ Piedmont. But I just can't justify their prices for ice cream so we honestly just come for food. But the food is hit or miss depending on what you order. Burger and fries were fine but the Philly cheesesteak was so disappointing - meat was dry, didn't taste like a "Philly", bread was under toasted. Overall, if there's no wait, I might come for a burger and fries. read more

Went on Sunday, 7/19/26, for Fenton's Jr black and tan sundae - anniversary special. The line was out the door for the take-out sundaes with around a forty minute wait while sit-down was less than a 5 minute wait. Cost was $1.52 for the anniversary sundae. The atmosphere was lively and festive for the anniversary of this iconic ice creamery. Glad to still have them around. read more

A must go to spot if you're in the east bay. Famous by locals and popular for tourists. They have all things ice cream and several different food options. The feel inside takes you back in the old days to a diner style. Their most famous items are the black & tan and crab sandwich. You'll notice this place popping on the weekends and a lot of birthday celebrations. Prices have significantly gone up, but you pay for the quality. Lines could get super long, so I'd recommend ordering takeout. When you walk in to the right hand side is to order on the spot and the left-hand side is to wait for a table to sit. Workers are really efficient with it being chaotic and crowded inside and they are actually very friendly. They do frequently have specials, so make sure to check up at the front. read more

My party of 3 was seated right away on a Sunday evening around 8:30pm, and there was a good amount of people waiting by the time we left. We got the tuna melt with curly fries, side of onion rings, and the petite ice cream dish (cookies n cream ice cream topped with hot fudge). Tried some of the crab sandwich too which was alright and my friend said the clam chowder was overly salty. I liked how we could choose the cheese for our tuna melt. Solid classic tuna melt. Curly fries and onion rings were classic too. Ice cream sundae was pretty good too and I'm glad that they have a petite version of the ice cream dish since their ice cream portions are huge. This ice cream spot/diner is iconic. If you grew up in the East Bay or visited, there's a good chance you've been here before. I've been here a long time ago and think it was the original building / location during that visit. On this visit, my nephew and I were in the area, grabbing dinner and thought it would be really fun to stop by this spot for dessert. Also, Alysa Liu just got the gold medal in the Olympics and I was swelling with East Bay pride. When we got there, the place was really busy. Although we were able to get seated right away because people were mainly ordering ice cream at the front counter. The room where we were seated it's pretty large and bright. It was a fun and active vibe in there. Our waitress showed up and I wanted to get some crazy concoction and I can't remember exactly what I got, but it was one of the banana sundaes. My nephew ended up just getting two scoops in an ice cream dish. We both enjoyed our ice cream and I was telling my nephew about my experiences growing up in the East Bay a little bit and how this place was immortalized and one of my favorite movies 'Up'. Overall, just a great time with delicious ice cream and great, friendly service. They have their own parking lot, but I was able to find some street parking right across the street from the location. This place has its own dedicated parking lot, though I was able to find free street parking less than a block away during my recent visit. I knew this would be a reliable spot for a quality chocolate milkshake, but I didn't realize I'd find an even better flavor... dutch chocolate chip! Made up of dark chocolate and chocolate chips, it was an easy choice this past weekend. I got a regular size milkshake, no whip. It was perfect! An ideal thickness, a rich and delectable chocolatey taste, and plenty of yummy chocolate chunks which I was able to scoop up with the long thin spoons provided by the restaurant & creamery in addition to the straws. I appreciated the instant service on a Sunday morning, just before noon. Staff was friendly and professional and made me one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. Made the trip up to Oakland to celebrate the 132 anniversary of Fentons ice cream. I thought that we got there early. But we still had to park a few blocks away. As usual the service was ok considering how busy it was at 1030 in the morning. People were ordering breakfast and then eating Sundays. Not my choice,but whatever. We both got the black and tan special. Only $1.32. My only concern was on the Togo special. The consistency was bad. Some were only half filled,some had hardly any Carmel sauce. I'm giving this place one star for one humongous reason and for this reason alone because it is so ridiculous. Overcharging is an understatement!! To put it clearly.. For a two scoop hot fudge sundae (regular size) is $18.00!! Someone should be ashamed of themself. I wouldn't dare spend a dollar in this place. Ridiculous prices for basic food and dessert. Ain't nothing special about it. Overrated and commercial. Services also just decent and ambience is always very crowded and ridiculous waiting to pay a bunch of money. Don't be sheep. read more

DO NOT DINE IN. You will regret the experience. The servers seem to go out of their way to not provide service (good luck getting any help after your food comes to your table), and refuse to turn around tables when people are clearly done eating. It's surreal. The last time I went we ended up walking up to the register to pay, because no one would give us the check for almost 30 minutes even after asking for it. It's like they wanted us to dine and dash... I would say this might have been an isolated experience but I'll point you to two things: 1) look at the date of my previous review and note the exact same feedback, and 2) I have asked around and everyone I know says the same thing: Fenton's is no longer what it once was and you should only go to pick up ice cream and leave. There's a huge line almost always so don't be fooled by it if you're trying to dine in. The lines for the scoop and go. Service is not great here -- your food may not arrive and you will certainly have to ask for it if they bring the check and only half of your food has arrived. I'll chalk it up to them being short staffed... sure. This is casual scoop and go or dine in. The ice creams dishes are delicious and definitely meant to be shared! What better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than at the local creamery. We drive all the way from the tri-valley for this special place and usually find street parking nearby. We must have caught the end of the lunch rush because all tables were full but there was just a 5-10 minute wait to be seated which was great. We came for lunch and the menu is extensive - salads, sandwiches, appetizers. This time we started with the jalapeno poppers and mozzarella sticks. Both were delicious. The Crab Louis salad was generously portioned with a very yummy thousand island dressing. The Cobb Salad (regular size, not the Large) was HUGE. No complaints and half went home with me as leftovers. Both salads were fresh and crisp. Definitely a good healthy option because you know we left room for ice cream! Notable: bummer that the app and entrees arrived at the same time. We didn't receive our sodas until after the food arrived, but did have water from the time we sat down so no big deal. Our server was helpful and cheerful. A good visit all around. read more

A staple every time im back in Oakland. I love that there's two different lines when you arrive, one to sit in and dine and other just for ice cream. The line for ice cream can sometimes have a bit of a wait and parking is limited so i suggest getting there right before dinner time service. The staff are polite and fast, pretty much an in and out service. I do believe you get two free samples which they have so many flavors to choose from! The inside of the restaurant feels like an old school diner that has a homey feel to it! They also have special sometimes and when I stopped in last time it was the "Alyssa's Gold" which I thought was pretty good! read more

Menu is quite extensive, filled with homey family friendly diner foods and their ice cream sundaes are wonderful. You can choose from all their flavors and customize your own or select from their signature sundaes and milk shakes. As for milkshakes, you can ask for with or without whip cream and either way, it's with any flavor of your choosing. So we had mocha royal, our fav! Definitely did not disappoint! Yum! Both crab and tuna sandwiches are prepared in SF sourdough breads. We loved how the buttered sour dough bread slices were grilled to bring out the best in the fillings. Crunchy toasty exterior but chewy with fillings of either crab or tuna - these sandwiches are just the right size and ... ah to die for! Service was friendly and as attentive as expected mid-day. The ice cream is so mid, it's not terrible but it's not good either. I won't be back. I think some brands from grocery stores are better, like Costco or Trader Joe's. I've never tried it before so I don't have the nostalgia and maybe the quality has went down in the last decade. I only tried a few ice cream flavors though. There's a limit of 2 samples probably due to the long line, which doesn't leave much room to choose. Maybe I tried the wrong things. Good service and nice place though, it's pretty big. read more

It's been a little over a year since my husband and I moved to Oakland and one of the first ice cream shops we explored was Fenton's Creamery. Since our time here we have been regulars just for their ice cream, visiting at least once a week to either come and grab a scoop or two for those late night cravings, to grab a few tubs to stick up on, or grab some to share it with friends and family. The two go-to flavors are the pistachio (with generous portions of actual pistachio pieces) and the Dutch chocolate. These two have been a hit with those we've shared with as well. The pistachio is by far the best my husband has had and we always order it. For the amount of times he's ordered this and shared it with his friends, he should be an ambassador for Fenton's. The service has been prompt, curtious, and generous with their portion size. There was only one time when the clerk got our order wrong. We ordered a quart of Dutch chocolate and came home to find it was mint chocolate, which was a bit disappointing since we asked a couple times if the item was Dutch chocolate. They keep the space clean and tidy. Once thing we haven't done is sat down and tried their dine-in menu. So that is on the list to check out one of these days. Hadn't been here in years, I actually remember thinking this place was pretty overrated lol. But after a recent hangout with my friend and her family we decided to come here for dinner, and it was a lovely experience. I went with the cheeseburger and opted for blue cheese, which I rarely get in my burgers but sounded good to me at the moment. I'm so glad I opted for the blue cheese because it came out delicious. I think I'm gonna start opting more for blue cheese in my sandwiches. I chose medium rare for my patty, and it was cooked perfectly. I hadn't had a burger in a long time and this meal hit the spot. The fries were fresh, hot, crispy. An indulgent dinner. They also have monthly ice cream flavors. I wasn't feeling ice cream bc I was so stuffed by the time I finished my meal, but I did have a taste of my friend's pistachio and cookies n cream ice cream which was tasty old fashioned ice cream. On a Friday night we had a later dinner ~8:30pm and the place was still packed although the line wasn't too bad. The parking lot is small, and apparently unsafe because when we arrived someone found that their car was broken into. Shocking, given the area is well lit and as I said there was still a line at this hour. Never leave your valuables in the car! Despite the car break-in, this is a great place to bring kids, or any ice cream/vintage parlor lover. They gave my friend's kid a cute hat, and some coloring pages and crayons to keep him occupied. Of course many years ago it was famous because of the Pixar movie Up too! They bring the whole house down singing happy birthday so if you want to embarrass your friend with the loudest birthday song from the entire restaurant then bring them here lol. Although the food is good, given the local competition I still think they are pricey for what is offered so this isn't going to be a regular visit for me, but I'd like to come again once the weather warms up to see what sort of unique monthly flavor they have in store. read more

Holidays are better with Fenton's ice cream & their banana split was an eye opener for most of the customers who sat nearby us bc it was quite big for a family of 4. As you can see the before & after pictures say it all bc we devoured it all. Usually it comes with vanilla, chocolate & strawberry but they were nice enough to substitute the chocolate for the featured peppermint ice cream. Service was amazing & there's a sense of sincerity when they ask " How is everything or Do you need anything". Fenton's is definitely an establishment! It was mesmerizing to watch this well-oiled machine handle so many guests and take-out orders. We got a Banana Split Jr. to share amongst four, which was more than enough for all of us. We subbed the chocolate for the Swiss Milk Chocolate and it tasted incredible. The pineapple topping paired SO well with the vanilla, and the fudge/almond topping was so good with the Swiss Milk Chocolate. Fries were also perfect. The nostalgia of Fenton's brings back memories when times were simpler. We didn't have cellphones, we had family day, played board games and rode around on our bikes. Those were the good ole days. The place is absolutely amazing . It's iconic , in a big city of Berkeley with lots of food culture . And ultimately that applies to small parking lots , business from out of towners, chaos from tourists and out of towners who don't know how the ordering process works. Huge bonus is that they have enough helpful workers and help you from the time you are seated . They won't rush you. Parking sucks and there is like maybe barely 8 spots which are always taken unless you are lucky . As for pride wow the place is borderline ripoff. $25 and up for banana splits etc. they have American diner food too burgers chicken tenders and the like. This might sway potential customers away . The way I think of it is this is a destination historically spot even found in a scene in a PIXAR movie UP. I don't come here frequently but when I do I am either celebrating something or treating friends or family or an occasion of accomplishment. They even have a gift shop for hardcore Fenton lovers . Just had lunch here with my husband. We were sat promptly. Everyone was very friendly but our waitress was not very attentive to us. I called someone else to help us get her attention. They have a huge selection of dessert items ranging from sundaes to scoops of ice cream to full on specialty items that will leave you with a sugar rush for hours. Prices are very fair for their portion size, can't come too often or else I'll get diabetes but it is a really nice treat once in a while. They have a small parking lot that fills up quickly so you will probably have to street park and you have to pay for parking even on Sundays :( read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon with my mother for a late lunch. There's a very small and busy parking lot. There wasn't a line and we were seated instantly. We sat in the middle. The chair legs were a bit uneven so it was wobbly. Our server was great. We decided to share because we both weren't too hungry. We got the mozzarella sticks and crab sandwich. Both were delicious.
