Jr black and tan sundae - anniversary special
    Scott L.

Went on Sunday, 7/19/26, for Fenton's Jr black and tan sundae - anniversary special. The line was out the door for the take-out sundaes with around a forty minute wait while sit-down was less than a 5 minute wait. Cost was $1.52 for the anniversary sundae. The atmosphere was lively and festive for the anniversary of this iconic ice creamery. Glad to still have them around.

I finally made it here!!! YAY I had no idea this was also a full size restaurant where you can order food and dine in!! Next time i will plan to eat in and try their food Ice cream is ok no wow factor, and low key kinda expensive to be honest.... however portions are big There is indoor and outdoor seating Inside is very clean Customer service is very friendly Small private parking lot

I ordered for delivery, and had the best tasting Sundae ever!! It was well packaged, and stapled inside a bag with no spillage. Although I couldn't finish it I put a hurting on it! Lol. I selected mocha almond fudge ice cream and a hot fudge topping. If I never have chocolate again I will be satisfied. Thanks Fentons Oakland!

Such a cute atmosphere! I've been coming here for years and somehow haven't written a review until now. There is usually a line at the counter. I like to ask to be seated- it's usually faster! I was sat right away on a Saturday around 4pm. Ordered a brownie sundae. It's definitely a lot to share. Between 2 adults we couldn't finish it. It was so good! I've always had positive interactions with staff here.

A must go to spot if you're in the east bay. Famous by locals and popular for tourists. They have all things ice cream and several different food options. The feel inside takes you back in the old days to a diner style. Their most famous items are the black & tan and crab sandwich. You'll notice this place popping on the weekends and a lot of birthday celebrations. Prices have significantly gone up, but you pay for the quality. Lines could get super long, so I'd recommend ordering takeout. When you walk in to the right hand side is to order on the spot and the left-hand side is to wait for a table to sit. Workers are really efficient with it being chaotic and crowded inside and they are actually very friendly. They do frequently have specials, so make sure to check up at the front.

My party of 3 was seated right away on a Sunday evening around 8:30pm, and there was a good amount of people waiting by the time we left. We got the tuna melt with curly fries, side of onion rings, and the petite ice cream dish (cookies n cream ice cream topped with hot fudge). Tried some of the crab sandwich too which was alright and my friend said the clam chowder was overly salty. I liked how we could choose the cheese for our tuna melt. Solid classic tuna melt. Curly fries and onion rings were classic too. Ice cream sundae was pretty good too and I'm glad that they have a petite version of the ice cream dish since their ice cream portions are huge. I think this spot is definitely more for the old timey diner vibes rather than mindblowing food.

Love coming to fentons year after year. Place has great hospitality and an old time diner feel. The owner supports the community with special events to bring people together. Ice cream is always rich and creamy. Can't go wrong! Favorite is coffee cookie dream and the black and tan sundaes.

This ice cream spot/diner is iconic. If you grew up in the East Bay or visited, there's a good chance you've been here before. I've been here a long time ago and think it was the original building / location during that visit. On this visit, my nephew and I were in the area, grabbing dinner and thought it would be really fun to stop by this spot for dessert. Also, Alysa Liu just got the gold medal in the Olympics and I was swelling with East Bay pride. When we got there, the place was really busy. Although we were able to get seated right away because people were mainly ordering ice cream at the front counter. The room where we were seated it's pretty large and bright. It was a fun and active vibe in there. Our waitress showed up and I wanted to get some crazy concoction and I can't remember exactly what I got, but it was one of the banana sundaes. My nephew ended up just getting two scoops in an ice cream dish. We both enjoyed our ice cream and I was telling my nephew about my experiences growing up in the East Bay a little bit and how this place was immortalized and one of my favorite movies 'Up'. Overall, just a great time with delicious ice cream and great, friendly service. They have their own parking lot, but I was able to find some street parking right across the street from the location. I would just warn you, however, that when you're parking on the street, try to not keep anything of value visible.

This place has its own dedicated parking lot, though I was able to find free street parking less than a block away during my recent visit. I knew this would be a reliable spot for a quality chocolate milkshake, but I didn't realize I'd find an even better flavor... dutch chocolate chip! Made up of dark chocolate and chocolate chips, it was an easy choice this past weekend. I got a regular size milkshake, no whip. It was perfect! An ideal thickness, a rich and delectable chocolatey taste, and plenty of yummy chocolate chunks which I was able to scoop up with the long thin spoons provided by the restaurant & creamery in addition to the straws. I appreciated the instant service on a Sunday morning, just before noon. Staff was friendly and professional and made me one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. Plus, I was in and out in just 5 minutes and able to enjoy my sweet treat to go. The positive experience at Fentons put me in a good mood for the rest of my day :)

Made the trip up to Oakland to celebrate the 132 anniversary of Fentons ice cream. I thought that we got there early. But we still had to park a few blocks away. As usual the service was ok considering how busy it was at 1030 in the morning. People were ordering breakfast and then eating Sundays. Not my choice, but whatever. We both got the black and tan special. Only $1.32. My only concern was on the Togo special. The consistency was bad. Some were only half filled, some had hardly any Carmel sauce. You could see them lined up waiting to be purchased. I know when it's that busy it's hard to make them all look the same.

There's a huge line almost always so don't be fooled by it if you're trying to dine in. The lines for the scoop and go. Service is not great here -- your food may not arrive and you will certainly have to ask for it if they bring the check and only half of your food has arrived. I'll chalk it up to them being short staffed... sure. This is casual scoop and go or dine in. The ice creams dishes are delicious and definitely meant to be shared! Even the Fentons special JUNIOR was big and between 3 people for dessert it was enough. Parking is on the street as their lot is pretty small.

Came here during Chinese lunar new year and open ordered the large Hyundai. I got the mint chocolate chip ice cream with Alyssa gold it is a very good ice cream. Service here is very fast and reliable, super friendly. The ambience is very nice as well because there's an indoor and outdoor seating personally in a very nice area like the Piedmont.

What better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than at the local creamery. We drive all the way from the tri-valley for this special place and usually find street parking nearby. We must have caught the end of the lunch rush because all tables were full but there was just a 5-10 minute wait to be seated which was great. We came for lunch and the menu is extensive - salads, sandwiches, appetizers. This time we started with the jalapeno poppers and mozzarella sticks. Both were delicious. The Crab Louis salad was generously portioned with a very yummy thousand island dressing. The Cobb Salad (regular size, not the Large) was HUGE. No complaints and half went home with me as leftovers. Both salads were fresh and crisp. Definitely a good healthy option because you know we left room for ice cream! Notable: bummer that the app and entrees arrived at the same time. We didn't receive our sodas until after the food arrived, but did have water from the time we sat down so no big deal. Our server was helpful and cheerful. A good visit all around.

Is Fenton Oakland still closed for remodeling?

    No. They are open

What's the difference between Cobb salad and grilled chicken salad?

The cobb Salad will have rows of chopped egg, crumbled bacon, avocado, blue cheese crumbles, tomato, cucumber and a chicken breast. As our Grilled chicken salad will just have chicken, tomato and cucumber.

    Does Fenton's take reservations?

12 people or more if you do it in advance and give a $100 deposit for a 2 hour slot.

What is the covid protocol ? Do we need to show vaccination proof or negative covid test results to dine in? Are tables socially distant or the normal close quarters seating ? Any masks required for entry signs? Re: Oakland location, specifically.

I went last night and they didn't check vaccination proofs or Covid tests. People didn't really socially distance either and I saw several people walk around the restaurant without a mask. A few of their staff had their masks under their noses as…

Yes, they sing BIG TYME Birthday,, and if you order the kitchen sink for the birthday person/ it’s really a BIG DEAL

I was able to order guava ice cream for a catering event. However I have never been able to get it in person at Fenton's. Is this available?

It is seasonal. You can call and ask if they have it.

How many days in advance do I have to give to order a cake? And do they have premade cakes I can just go in and grab?

There is a form on their website to place ice cream cake order request. I have not seen pre-made cakes on display at the restaurant.

    Do they take American Express?

    Yes.

How do I order cake online?

Go to Fenton's website and download cake form - you can bring it in or fax it to them. You can also call them to confirm details.

Do they still have crab sandwiches ? I used to get that or a combo sandwich of egg salad and ripe olives on sourdough w lots of pickles. Are these sandwiches gone too? They were delish!!!

I usually order their crab sandwich. They still serve that.

I got a single scoop with two flavors: earl grey and lavender. A beautiful blend together, neither were too sweet or overpowering. Very refreshing during the summer heat.

We went about an hour before closing and there were a few hiccups throughout the visit. There was a…read moreline out the door which got me excited because it usually means the place is good, and the reviews say the same. The only issue is there's no clear menu posted online, so we walked in completely blind. Their website shows a long list of flavors but not what they actually have that day, so it felt like a guessing game. The line moved really slow because there was only one employee handling everything. She was taking orders, giving samples, answering questions, and ringing people up all at once. She was super friendly and doing her best, but it felt like a lot for one person during a rush and the shop could definitely use more help. The space is really small and tight so it was hard to even see the flavors until we got close to the front. When we finally got up there, a lot of the tubs were already empty which was confusing since most ice cream shops restock. Some flavors I wanted weren't available anymore, and if they're out it would make more sense to just remove them from display. The dirty containers didn't make sense to display. I sampled the jasmine green tea and knew right away I wanted it. It was creamy with a smooth tea flavor that wasn't overpowering. I got a small with half jasmine green tea and half avocado. The avocado was surprisingly really good, super creamy and tasted like a fresh avocado smoothie. Both flavors weren't overly sweet which I liked. My husband wanted cookies and cream but it was sold out so he got chocolate chip instead, which was solid and creamy with good texture. Overall the ice cream itself was good, not the best I've had but definitely not bad. I like that the flavors lean more natural and not overly sweet. I could see myself coming back if I'm in the area, but the experience would be a lot better with faster service and more consistency with what's actually available.
