While in Berkeley I stumbled upon this place. Glad I did. I was so happy to support this establishment that has been feeding Berkeley for over 60 years. Since I wasn't prepared for the experience, I only had a spinach omelette, some grits, and their homemade biscuit. Gotta go back.

It was our first time here and we love it. The fried chicken was amazing, the greens was delicious. The rice with red beans was good. The service took a little long but worth it. The staff was really friendly. Come check them out.

Southern Fried Chicken breakfast! LOOK AT IT! So damn good!!!

HALLELUUUUUUUU!!!! Whoops. Sorryyy! Just had to let out an aggressive chant of JOY for that fried chicken and dem waffles. You can't see it now, but I'm slow clapping because whew gawd. Dis is some good shiiieet. Excuse my French. Why it has taken me so long to review this place is absolutely beyond me. BUT... they are getting the golden stamp of approval. Lois hunty; you truly are the queen! The food here is the bomb.com! If you like crispy, flavorful, fall off the bone fried chicken, then this place is for YOU! And they season that chicken for the GAWDS, do you hear me?! Had me lickin' my fingers in total and utter satisfaction. This is a breakfast that you must experience. The grits are creamy and buttered dooooowwwn! The biscuits are the fluffiest ever. I most recently order their chicken and pecan waffles to-go, and that waffle must have damn near melted in my mouth! It was scrumptious even for takeout. Neat and nicely packaged too. I will say that I prefer the sit down experience as the service is great and it feels so nice and homey inside. I'm not sure if they are still doing cash only for dine in, but I'd check ahead of time. I'm not usually a fan of cash only places, but I will not hesitate for Lois. The food is absolutely scrumptious and then some. For an institution to be operating as long as they have, it's impressive that their food is still hittin' like this. If you haven't already tried this spot, you need to!

2pc chicken and waffle, with a side of grits and biscuit. So much food, had to take the grits and biscuit home! Fried chicken was really good, the waffle was not my fav. I'd like to try to come here for dinner. It's a cozy neighborhood diner, I loved seeing so many celebs pass through on their photo wall. Definitely feels like a historic establishment in the east bay.

This place is an old staple in the town. They have a wide variety of pies and desserts to choose from

I arrived just after the restaurant opened, determined to snag a seat at the counter before the morning rush rolled in. The whole place feels like stepping into your grandmother's dining room after church on Sunday--walls covered in "family photos," vinyl tablecloths, and a warm, familiar charm that is truly nostalgic. That old-school fried chicken paired with crystal hot sauce? Simple, classic, and perfectly done. I couldn't help noticing a steady stream of pork chop orders, so that's definitely on my list for next time. I grabbed a slice of pound cake and a piece of key lime pie to go. The pound cake was dense yet moist, and the key lime pie had just the right tangy kick. It was comfort food at its finest, and it's easy to see why this spot has stood the test of time.

Lois the Pie Queen is the spot you went to as a kid after church on Sunday. It's the post-recital meal that leaves you full. It's that meal you have the morning after a night out that brings you to life. This joint is a local establishment decorated with pictures of both bay area and national legends. So how is the food? Lois the Pie Queen focuses on comforting soul food. Expect yams, collard greens, fried chicken and waffles and the like. This time I went with the smothered chicken thighs alongside greens, rice, and red beans. The portion I received was massive and generously covered in gravy. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the greens were very solid. The food here always smacks and I doubt you'll be disappointed. I will say that you should come prepared with cash for this spot. P.S. the corned beef and hash here is awesome and one of my favorite breakfast selections.

I haven't been in a few years, but we were up extra early due to jet lag and popped in for breakfast. The place has stayed the same in the best possible way. It's cozy, like stepping back in time. This includes form of payment which is cash or cash app. We had delicious hot chocolate, waffles with fresh fruit and eggs with veggie sausage, hash browns and biscuits. We also got a slice of the Biscoff pound cake to go. Everytime I come here I feel like I am visiting an old friend.

Honest review I excepted better for $57 dollars

I hate leaving negative reviews, but unfortunately I have to be honest about my experience. I ordered the macaroni and cheese, short ribs, yams, and rice with gravy on Father's Day and spent about $57. Out of everything I ordered, only the fish from the second plate was decent. The rice was extremely hard, as if it wasn't cooked properly. The gravy had an unpleasant taste and ended up being poured over everything, including the macaroni and cheese, which made it difficult to enjoy. The yams were cut into huge chunks with little care or presentation. The biggest disappointment was the short ribs. The meat quality was very poor, with an unpleasant taste and texture that made it nearly impossible to eat. I was genuinely shocked by how bad it was. For the amount of money I spent, I expected much better quality, preparation, and presentation. Nothing was separated properly, and the meal felt rushed and carelessly put together. I am very disappointed, especially since this was supposed to be a Father's Day meal. I wanted to support this business, but based on this experience, I cannot justify spending $57 for food of this quality. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so improvements can be made in the future.

    Tiffany A.

Sometimes we just like to support. Regardless. That's my attitude about it. Each time I've showed up, I have had an absurdly long wait time. It once took 20min just to get water. And that was AFTER she took my drink order, of which I ordered water and hot cocoa. Half of my food was cold and the rest was hot. Example, hot burger, cold fries ( which were freezer burnt btw) and a cold waffle and hot chicken. If it takes almost an hour to be served, surly you don't send food back. But I did inform the host and he was nice about it. I recommend the chicken and waffles. I don't get the hype. I just think people go just to support.

Key Lime Pie bought whole as a take out. Homemade whipped cream. Terrific pie!

First visit 10/05/24 at 10:30a Nice sunny day in Oakland (84*F extended Summer) IYKYK- No, we did not find this gem by chance; We were introduced by an Oakland native knowing that I crave "pork chops & grits" every now and then. The day was meant to be with a great parking spot nearby and only 15 mins wait for a table. Our coffee cups were filled as well cold ice water served as soon as we were seated! The hosts were all super friendly and attentive which was very impressive. Just from eyeballing it- the diner seats about 60-65 ppl plus the bar area. As for food, the Reggie Special comes with 2 thick pork chops, 2 eggs and a choice of hashbrowns, grits or rice and 2 biscuits .

Reggie Jackson Special Chicken and Waffle
    Darlene J.

This was my first time going to this restaurant. I've always heard about it and was always interested in eating there. The food looked good, however; I was extremely disappointed. My date ordered the Reggie Jackson Special. It was two fried pork chops, eggs, potatoes or grits, and toast or biscuits. The pork chops were extremely overcooked, and weren't seasoned enough. The "homemade" biscuits were questionable. They were more like Pillsbury and over baked and hard. I ordered Chicken and Waffles. My waffle was flat as a tortilla. The fried chicken was too salty. I was disappointed because it was my dates birthday and we weren't impressed. The service was okay. I don't think I would go back. There were a good number of customers.

The wait staff was excellent, keeping our glasses filled and entertaining our baby as he was trying to make everyone smile. The charred eggplant gumbo was delicious, adding the rice directly into the pot for maximum flavor while keeping the rice moist. The grits were the star of the show in my opinion, with smooth texture and flavor that popped and made me want to take anther bite. The greens tasted like my mom's when she would go pick them in the summer of my childhood. The chicken was prepared two ways, the fried, was crispy and juicy, with a hint of that hot grease. The roasted chicken was moist and the drippings added another layer of flavor that made it feel homemade. We definitely wish we had room for dessert and we want to come back for a brunch service.

Southern fare served up in fine dining. Everything was well executed and a few dishes reimagined…read morethe classics. The inventive dishes really knocked it out of the park. We ordered the family dinner with the addition of the chicken liver and waffles and the BBQ shrimp. I will just highlight a few items: the boiled peanuts were fantastic. They are presented in a miso sauce that layers in the umami, and the boil brings out the legume dimension of peanuts (as opposed to its usual nut treatment). The liver mousse with the waffle was just unfair to other chicken livers. The intense salt and acid of the preparation was met by the hearty cornmeal waffle which seemed to be drenched in syrup. Heavy? Yes. But shared across the table, we each took just a bite which was enough to change how I will think about liver as an ingredient. Other items were more middle of the road. The fried cod was just that: tender meat and a thick batter (with plenty of salt and pepper). Executed to a T, but not too different from other fish places. The cornbread had some subtly with its mix of flours, but served with honey butter, the mix comes off more like household variation than an exploration of the dish. And it is imperative that you come with family. You're going to share and you're going to eat with your hands. When things get saucy, it's good to know whose fingers you're touching! And, it's worth noting that some (but not all!) dishes are about 50% larger than you typically get with fine dining. Sharing from the à la carte menu may be the best strategy. I look forward to my next visit here to keep trying the more thoughtfully crafted dishes -- with family, of course.

While this visit was in between the lunch and dinner rush, unfortunately I think they are understaffed because at the time we sat down there was only 1 person who was busing tables and taking orders. As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

The crispies of the outside of the brussels sprout contrasts to the inside softness. So good!. All of the staff here is fantastic. This is a well run restaurant.

Consistently bad…read more There was something wrong with over half of our party of eight's entrees. - Pork chop: According to our server, this was an "excellent choice". It was HELLA DRY (see pic)! Like, hard-to-swallow-dry. The carrots and the potatoes were good though. The poor pig died in vain. - Spaghetti di mare: Oily! - Steak: Ordered medium, came out super rare. Mom was just going to eat it, insisting it was fine, but then our server came over and took one look and said "yeah that's definitely rare". At our server's insistence, it was sent back and it was more medium, but it was tough. Not much flavor either. - Fish and chips: Also overcooked and tough. - Shrimp: Same, overcooked and tough and the pesto pasta also lacked flavor. - Ribs and tagliatelle were "ok". The only passable entrees, but far from being spectacular. You may ask why we didn't complain to our server. Well, first, we never send entrees back. Second, how do you even send five out of eight entrees back?! After my mom's steak returned medium and it still wasn't good, why bother? Our starters: buffalo wings, fried calamari and truffle fries were decent enough, but after that it was all downhill. We all passed on dessert. I don't think we've ever had a family dinner where we all complained so much. Looking at the most recent reviews, it looks like our experience is not an isolated one. The prices are not justified for what it was. $51 for a steak, $42 for a pork chop. $15 for a mocktail is steep even for a fancy restaurant, which Townhouse is not. I am not opposed to forking over money for food and drink, if it's good. Almost $500 including tax and tip down the drain. The service was fine. The apps and alcoholic spirits were alright, thus 2 stars.
