HALLELUUUUUUUU!!!! Whoops. Sorryyy! Just had to let out an aggressive chant of JOY for that fried chicken and dem waffles. You can't see it now, but I'm slow clapping because whew gawd. Dis is some good shiiieet. Excuse my French. Why it has taken me so long to review this place is absolutely beyond me. BUT... they are getting the golden stamp of approval. Lois hunty; you truly are the queen! The food here is the bomb.com! If you like crispy, flavorful, fall off the bone fried chicken, then this place is for YOU! And they season that chicken for the GAWDS, do you hear me?! Had me lickin' my fingers in total and utter satisfaction. This is a breakfast that you must experience. The grits are creamy and buttered dooooowwwn! The biscuits are the fluffiest ever. I most recently order their chicken and pecan waffles to-go, and that waffle must have damn near melted in my mouth! It was scrumptious even for takeout. Neat and nicely packaged too. I will say that I prefer the sit down experience as the service is great and it feels so nice and homey inside. I'm not sure if they are still doing cash only for dine in, but I'd check ahead of time. I'm not usually a fan of cash only places, but I will not hesitate for Lois. The food is absolutely scrumptious and then some. For an institution to be operating as long as they have, it's impressive that their food is still hittin' like this. If you haven't already tried this spot, you need to!
While in Berkeley I stumbled upon this place. Glad I did. I was so happy to support this establishment that has been feeding Berkeley for over 60 years. Since I wasn't prepared for the experience, I only had a spinach omelette, some grits, and their homemade biscuit. Gotta go back.

Definitely feels like a historic establishment in the east bay.
I arrived just after the restaurant opened, determined to snag a seat at the counter before the morning rush rolled in. The whole place feels like stepping into your grandmother's dining room after church on Sunday--walls covered in "family photos," vinyl tablecloths, and a warm, familiar charm that is truly nostalgic. That old-school fried chicken paired with crystal hot sauce? Simple, classic, and perfectly done. I couldn't help noticing a steady stream of pork chop orders, so that's definitely on my list for next time. I grabbed a slice of pound cake and a piece of key lime pie to go. The pound cake was dense yet moist, and the key lime pie had just the right tangy kick. It was comfort food at its finest, and it's easy to see why this spot has stood the test of time.
It was our first time here and we love it. The fried chicken was amazing, the greens was delicious. The rice with red beans was good. The service took a little long but worth it. The staff was really friendly. Come check them out.

Lois the Pie Queen is the spot you went to as a kid after church on Sunday. It's the post-recital meal that leaves you full. It's that meal you have the morning after a night out that brings you to life. This joint is a local establishment decorated with pictures of both bay area and national legends. So how is the food? Lois the Pie Queen focuses on comforting soul food. Expect yams, collard greens, fried chicken and waffles and the like. This time I went with the smothered chicken thighs alongside greens, rice, and red beans. The portion I received was massive and generously covered in gravy. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the greens were very solid. The food here always smacks and I doubt you'll be disappointed. I will say that you should come prepared with cash for this spot. P.S. the corned beef and hash here is awesome and one of my favorite breakfast selections.
I haven't been in a few years, but we were up extra early due to jet lag and popped in for breakfast. The place has stayed the same in the best possible way. It's cozy, like stepping back in time. This includes form of payment which is cash or cash app. We had delicious hot chocolate, waffles with fresh fruit and eggs with veggie sausage, hash browns and biscuits. We also got a slice of the Biscoff pound cake to go. Everytime I come here I feel like I am visiting an old friend.

And that was AFTER she took my drink order, of which I ordered water and hot cocoa. Half of my food was cold and the rest was hot. Example, hot burger, cold fries ( which were freezer burnt btw) and a cold waffle and hot chicken. If it takes almost an hour to be served, surly you don't send food back. But I did inform the host and he was nice about it. I recommend the chicken and waffles. I don't get the hype. I just think people go just to support.

I ordered the macaroni and cheese, short ribs, yams, and rice with gravy on Father's Day and spent about $57. Out of everything I ordered, only the fish from the second plate was decent. The rice was extremely hard, as if it wasn't cooked properly. The gravy had an unpleasant taste and ended up being poured over everything, including the macaroni and cheese, which made it difficult to enjoy. The yams were cut into huge chunks with little care or presentation. The biggest disappointment was the short ribs. The meat quality was very poor, with an unpleasant taste and texture that made it nearly impossible to eat. I was genuinely shocked by how bad it was. For the amount of money I spent, I expected much better quality, preparation, and presentation. Nothing was separated properly, and the meal felt rushed and carelessly put together. I am very disappointed, especially since this was supposed to be a Father's Day meal. I wanted to support this business, but based on this experience, I cannot justify spending $57 for food of this quality. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so improvements can be made in the future.

I'm so happy that a friend put me on to this place. It reminds me of my late aunts cooking and it's just good ole simplistic breakfast staples. I tried corned beef hash for the first time and loved it so I came back for that and was not disappointed. The meal is about $16 comes with toast, eggs, and I chose the grits which are also hella good. The service is always amazing and so is the food. The only reason why I gave 4 stars is because I can't bring myself to agree with the price of their breakfast sides compared to what you get. & it may have been some months but they used to fill both sides with grits. Seems like portions are getting cut for Togo orders maybe but prices are staying the same. For 3 slices of thin xtra crispy pieces of bacon (actually two slices and burnt pieces) it's $8.25+ I remember thinking it was insane so I never added any extra meat and after going recently I was reminded why, my order came out to $27, when I opened the side of bacon I was disappointed. I believe the quality and quantity should better match the price. Otherwise I'll gladly go buy a full pack of thick cut Oscar Meyer bacon for less than what they're charging for 3 slices and just add it at home lol. it's tough for business owners and consumers out here so while I understand price increase, it should still make sense for the consumer. Still love this place down. Just won't be paying for a side again. read more

First visit 10/05/24 at 10:30a Nice sunny day in Oakland (84*F extended Summer) IYKYK- No, we did not find this gem by chance; We were introduced by an Oakland native knowing that I crave "pork chops & grits" every now and then. The day was meant to be with a great parking spot nearby and only 15 mins wait for a table. Our coffee cups were filled as well cold ice water served as soon as we were seated! The hosts were all super friendly and attentive which was very impressive. Just from eyeballing it- the diner seats about 60-65 ppl plus the bar area. As for food, the Reggie Special comes with 2 thick pork chops, 2 eggs and a choice of hashbrowns, grits or rice and 2 biscuits . read more

This was my first time going to this restaurant. I've always heard about it and was always interested in eating there. The food looked good, however; I was extremely disappointed. My date ordered the Reggie Jackson Special. It was two fried pork chops, eggs, potatoes or grits, and toast or biscuits. The pork chops were extremely overcooked, and weren't seasoned enough. The "homemade" biscuits were questionable. They were more like Pillsbury and over baked and hard. I ordered Chicken and Waffles. My waffle was flat as a tortilla. The fried chicken was too salty. I was disappointed because it was my dates birthday and we weren't impressed. The service was okay. I don't think I would go back. There were a good number of customers. read more

Omelet with grits and homemade biscuits (delish and surprisingly a tiny bit sweet) was eaten and packed up with leftovers. My friends eggs and fruit bowl was devoured. Coffee cups were full then empty, then full and empty. And then we got crazy! After all the food, we decided to share a slice of "pie". We ordered the peach cobbler cheesecake. I doubted how it would taste. Fruit desserts aren't always a favorite. Cheesecake is, but I get picky because it has to be seriously good cheesecake for me to appreciate it. One bite. It took one bite to shut me up! I couldn't talk. This is seriously one of THE BEST cheesecakes I've had. Bought an extra slice to take home. Yes Ma'am! It's worth the hips! read more

I first went to Lois the Pie Queen 30 years ago with my brother and nephew. It was incredible then and the food is still outstanding. I ordered the French Toast and it was perfectly cooked, great cinnamon flavor. The Salmon Croquette was a nice, smooth texture on the inside and great crunch on the outside. The flavor was outstanding. My son ordered the Steak and Eggs. Though he said the steak was "just okay," he loved the eggs and hash browns. The service was excellent and as usual the vibe was just right. Their playlist was fire, brought me back. I'm happy I got to take my son here and I'll keep coming back. read more

I love this old school restaurant! They are famous for their desserts and fried chicken. Street parking and cash only. The service today was lacking in friendliness for some reason but this didn't impact my slice of banana cheesecake for the hubby. It's a generous slice for $9.75 these days. There is a layer of fresh bananas whose color has turned and topped with real whipped cream. The banana flavor permeates each bite. You can definitely taste the tang of the cream cheese which doesn't bother me at all. Gotta try the banana pudding next time. I've been here twice before and had the chicken and waffles which good and even better with hot sauce and honey. Yes, if you haven't had this combo, try it. Life changing! Being an Oakland native, I finally made it here. Like many have said, it's not a fancy joint, but was there for the food and the nostalgia feel of the place. It was a dreary bit of day when I went, which makes place this more awesome for me as it give extra cozy vibes. CASH only or Venmo. I got a seat at the counter as it was just me. Staff is friendly, i think the owners daughter works there as the young gal looked like her dad. There are pictures famous, local and national ,black folks who have come to this institution because of the reputation of the food and of course the original owner Lois and now here son. I had not idea that Reggie Jackson was adopted by her. If you are from Oakland no need to explain who he is, if you aren't look him up. While I was awaiting my order, it seems like were hopping with people stopping in for their icebox pies. 80'-90s jams play over the radio and in the lull of that you might hear the mexican music coming from the back that the staff are listening too as well. In perusing the menu you will just about find something for everyone. I settled on the chicken and waffles, but substituted the regular waffle for the pecan one along with a cup of coffee, and a side of grits to go. The service was quick and my pecan waffle came out with 3 huge pieces of chicken. The waffle had hints of cinnamon and nice size pieces of chopped up pecans. The chicken was not overly crusted, golden brown and perfectly cooked. Reminded me of my younger years when moms would cook the chicken. The food was good, but it was a bit pricey, but then everything seems to be. I not saying come every week, but if you are an Oaklander and haven't been, you must come to this institution, because the next generation might not want to carry on Lois the Pie Queens legacy. read more

I stumbled upon Lois the Pie Queen and was immediately drawn inside. The staff is welcoming and kind, the environment is homey, and the treats are out of this world. When I first came in I purchased a key lime pie for my man because they are his favorite so I always grab one when I see them available. He said it was the best he had ever had. I have since been back to get him another. When my 30th birthday was approaching, I knew I wanted to get something special, so naturally I had to get something from here. I preordered a large banana cream pudding. It was massive and only $40! I was mind blown. I came back to on the morning of my bday and they had it sitting in the case waiting for me. When I say that was one of the top 3 desserts i've had in my life, I am not exaggerating. The pudding texture was SO creamy. The wafers were delicious. The banana tasted on point for several days. It was actually dangerously delicious. Next time I have to try the sweet potato cheese cake! I recommend Louis the Pie Queen to everyone I know. read more
