This place is an old staple in the town. They have a wide variety of pies and desserts to choose from

Southern Fried Chicken breakfast! LOOK AT IT! So damn good!!!

HALLELUUUUUUUU!!!! Whoops. Sorryyy! Just had to let out an aggressive chant of JOY for that fried chicken and dem waffles. You can't see it now, but I'm slow clapping because whew gawd. Dis is some good shiiieet. Excuse my French. Why it has taken me so long to review this place is absolutely beyond me. BUT... they are getting the golden stamp of approval. Lois hunty; you truly are the queen! The food here is the bomb.com! If you like crispy, flavorful, fall off the bone fried chicken, then this place is for YOU! And they season that chicken for the GAWDS, do you hear me?! Had me lickin' my fingers in total and utter satisfaction. This is a breakfast that you must experience. The grits are creamy and buttered dooooowwwn! The biscuits are the fluffiest ever. I most recently order their chicken and pecan waffles to-go, and that waffle must have damn near melted in my mouth! It was scrumptious even for takeout. Neat and nicely packaged too. I will say that I prefer the sit down experience as the service is great and it feels so nice and homey inside. I'm not sure if they are still doing cash only for dine in, but I'd check ahead of time. I'm not usually a fan of cash only places, but I will not hesitate for Lois. The food is absolutely scrumptious and then some. For an institution to be operating as long as they have, it's impressive that their food is still hittin' like this. If you haven't already tried this spot, you need to!

I arrived just after the restaurant opened, determined to snag a seat at the counter before the morning rush rolled in. The whole place feels like stepping into your grandmother's dining room after church on Sunday--walls covered in "family photos," vinyl tablecloths, and a warm, familiar charm that is truly nostalgic. That old-school fried chicken paired with crystal hot sauce? Simple, classic, and perfectly done. I couldn't help noticing a steady stream of pork chop orders, so that's definitely on my list for next time. I grabbed a slice of pound cake and a piece of key lime pie to go. The pound cake was dense yet moist, and the key lime pie had just the right tangy kick. It was comfort food at its finest, and it's easy to see why this spot has stood the test of time.

Lois the Pie Queen is the spot you went to as a kid after church on Sunday. It's the post-recital meal that leaves you full. It's that meal you have the morning after a night out that brings you to life. This joint is a local establishment decorated with pictures of both bay area and national legends. So how is the food? Lois the Pie Queen focuses on comforting soul food. Expect yams, collard greens, fried chicken and waffles and the like. This time I went with the smothered chicken thighs alongside greens, rice, and red beans. The portion I received was massive and generously covered in gravy. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the greens were very solid. The food here always smacks and I doubt you'll be disappointed. I will say that you should come prepared with cash for this spot. P.S. the corned beef and hash here is awesome and one of my favorite breakfast selections.

I haven't been in a few years, but we were up extra early due to jet lag and popped in for breakfast. The place has stayed the same in the best possible way. It's cozy, like stepping back in time. This includes form of payment which is cash or cash app. We had delicious hot chocolate, waffles with fresh fruit and eggs with veggie sausage, hash browns and biscuits. We also got a slice of the Biscoff pound cake to go. Everytime I come here I feel like I am visiting an old friend.

Sometimes we just like to support. Regardless. That's my attitude about it. Each time I've showed up, I have had an absurdly long wait time. It once took 20min just to get water. And that was AFTER she took my drink order, of which I ordered water and hot cocoa. Half of my food was cold and the rest was hot. Example, hot burger, cold fries ( which were freezer burnt btw) and a cold waffle and hot chicken. If it takes almost an hour to be served, surly you don't send food back. But I did inform the host and he was nice about it. I recommend the chicken and waffles. I don't get the hype. I just think people go just to support.

Key Lime Pie bought whole as a take out. Homemade whipped cream. Terrific pie!

First visit 10/05/24 at 10:30a Nice sunny day in Oakland (84*F extended Summer) IYKYK- No, we did not find this gem by chance; We were introduced by an Oakland native knowing that I crave "pork chops & grits" every now and then. The day was meant to be with a great parking spot nearby and only 15 mins wait for a table. Our coffee cups were filled as well cold ice water served as soon as we were seated! The hosts were all super friendly and attentive which was very impressive. Just from eyeballing it- the diner seats about 60-65 ppl plus the bar area. As for food, the Reggie Special comes with 2 thick pork chops, 2 eggs and a choice of hashbrowns, grits or rice and 2 biscuits .

This was my first time going to this restaurant. I've always heard about it and was always interested in eating there. The food looked good, however; I was extremely disappointed. My date ordered the Reggie Jackson Special. It was two fried pork chops, eggs, potatoes or grits, and toast or biscuits. The pork chops were extremely overcooked, and weren't seasoned enough. The "homemade" biscuits were questionable. They were more like Pillsbury and over baked and hard. I ordered Chicken and Waffles. My waffle was flat as a tortilla. The fried chicken was too salty. I was disappointed because it was my dates birthday and we weren't impressed. The service was okay. I don't think I would go back. There were a good number of customers.

The banana pudding here is solid . This place is one of the OG in Oakland and I am happy to see them busy.

This was Peach Cobbler Cheesecake. Not anymore!

Touch of Soul Soul Food Restaurant delivered one of the best comfort‑food experiences we have had in a long time. Every dish tasted like it was made with care, tradition, and a whole lot of love. The catfish was perfectly seasoned with a crispy golden crust and tender, flaky meat inside. The chicken wings were just as impressive --well‑seasoned, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The sides were the real stars, though. The yams were rich and buttery with just the right amount of sweetness. The potato salad was creamy and flavorful without being heavy. The greens had that slow‑cooked, soulful taste you can't fake, and the macaroni and cheese was exactly what mac and cheese should be--cheesy, comforting, and baked just right. And those corn muffins? Soft, warm, and the perfect finishing touch. From start to finish, the meal felt like a true home‑cooked experience. If you're looking for soul food that hits every note--flavor, comfort, and authenticity--Touch of Soul is absolutely worth the visit. The foot is priced just right, especially in today's economy. One last thing, the service was AWESOME!!!!

My experience with this restaurant has been inconsistent, but my most recent catering order was…read moreextremely disappointing. The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.

(Sampler included red beans and rice, collard greens, fried catfish, hush puppies, plain beignet and gumbo). We also ordered the beignet flight and shrimp and grits. Plenty of food for the 2 of us, plus we had left overs. I can't not order the shrimp and grits. It's just so damn good! It's so rich and flavorful! It came out SUPER hot. Grits and cheese still bubbling. My daughter and I were both surprised she liked the collard greens. She's usually not a fan. She also liked the red beans and rice and she doesn't usually like beans either. That just goes to show how amazing the food is here! We came in around 4something pm on a rainy Sunday. Who would've thought you could have such a gourmet experience with good ol' soul food?! From the get go, everything was lovely. Parking was easy to find and we brought our kiddo and the staff made him smile and laugh. It's not easy to take little ones out for fine dining but we've got a great kid and the Burdell staff was amazing. I love the decor; it's like if you could make homey chic? We definitely had to get the chicken and waffles which was of course amazing and my kid devoured it. It wasn't your classic chicken and waffles but like crispy chicken skin bits (my kid's favorite) and I don't know what is in the waffles but they were divine. Not to mention the chicken liver mousse!! Heavenly. I'm allergic to peanuts so instead of the boiled peanuts (which my husband inhaled) I got something else and my apologies I cannot remember what it was but it was refreshing and crisp) Also the cornbread is to die for. I would eat it every day if I could. It went so well with the pork chop and I would come back just for the cornbread. Last but not least I eyed the owner and chef himself apron'd up and working amongst his staff like an undercover boss and I appreciated his humility and grace. This restaurant is good for when you want to have a nice evening out, but not sure if I would be able to dine here casually multiple nights a week. The service was great with a chill laid-back vibe to the place. It also has a cozy home, feeling to it because of the pictures on the wall. The interior is minimalist and clean. Also know that the service fee or tip is included in your bill. I don't mind at all because I usually tip that amount at least when I go out anyway, but it should be known. Came here for dinner while on a work trip in the area and was able to get seated at the bar pretty much right away. I ordered the boiled peanuts to start which was soaking in peanut miso. I also ordered the Jadore chicken which comes partly fried and roasted and comes with deviled egg potato salad on the side. I love the boiled peanuts even though my fingers got a little messy lol. The chicken was good and so was the sides. I would love to come back and try more items on the menu, but like I mentioned before, this place isn't exactly cheap so I would probably make a nice night out of it. I came in on a weekday so there was pretty good amount of metered street parking in the area.
