I've heard many things about Gregory's Gourmet Desserts but tried it today for the first time. Parking was a challenge, with the location being nestled within downtown, closer to Lake Merritt. I was surprised that no one spoke of business specifics in their reviews. There is a limit to how many can come in; and you are not allowed to touch anything when inside. There are also no prices listed anywhere. We thought this was odd. Our order: * Personal Peach Cobbler * Walnut Brownie * Banana Pudding For these 3 items, our total was over $25. The service was friendly but a bit awkward. You are only able to see cases of dessert options, it is more of a pick-up point, not so much a bakery location you can browse. I wouldn't suggest coming as a large group, there is no where to sit to enjoy your baked goods and parking is very difficult. While the cobbler and banana pudding were good, I wasn't a fan of the brownie. My partner enjoyed the cobbler a lot, but when we did the calculations, the prices were astronomical. I'm not sure what gourmet difference the items contained, but we likely would not come back to this bakery considering prices and parking. The location is cute, in theory, but with no actual location or displays, or price lists- what you pay for doesn't balance out. The lack of transparency for prices was very sus to us. I'm sure the business will continue on especially with how much they charged. I can't imagine the bakery location and building rent costing a lot as far as operating costs; as it is small, and not expansive at all. The price of the baked goods doesn't even go towards branded packaging. Which could be understandable. The only beverages available that I seen was Nesquik. Steep prices with no justification - especially when you have other bakeries in the area, in addition to Nation's for Pies, very affordable and classic as well. E&J's has a great banana pudding and cobbler as well for $6- they are also a Black-owned business and family operated. Absolutely no bad intent, just wanting to share transparency in my review so Yelpers know that prices are not listed, which means they are subject to fluctuation- in this economy that is not a fair way of doing business. One star per item we liked, for this review. As much signage is visible upon entry regarding rules and limited persons for entry at a time- not one area provided prices; only signs that tell you not to touch. I went yesterday and tried their chocolate cream pie, chocolate chip cookies, and brownie. The brownie: i got a center piece of the brownie. The consistency is not similar to cake, but more so fudge. It was if the exterior was baked, but the internal components were intentionally undercooked to achieve a pudding texture. Chocolate cream pie: the pie filling was decadent. It was a deep rich dark chocolate flavor with the right amount of sweetness. The crust made the pie overly sweet. The first day I felt like I was going in a diabetic coma. The following morning after refrigeration, I noticed sugar crystals with a cookie mix pie crust. Although the filling was amazing, in my opinion, the entire pie would be a exceptional if the sweetness was toned down with a traditional flour pie crust. I, personally, did not try the chocolate chip cookies this time. Overall, I enjoyed the desserts that I had and will return to this establishment go to try other treats. read more

It's a very small underground-ish area, and there's no seating. You ask the staff for whichever pastries you'd like and they grab it out of the case/fridge for you. Ranked best to worst, we got the: - milkshake pie: omg idk how but it really does taste like a milkshake, coffee base with huge oreo chunks mixed in. brownie crust was quite tough but bottom was compressed oreo - sweet potato cake: yummm, tastes like carrot cake, well spiced, moist - coconut cream pie: not too sweet, big coconut chunks mixed into the base, light, very crumbly crust like loose crumbs - red velvet cake: easily the worst one, dry like a grocery store cake honestly Only issue is these got stale fast, like the cakes weren't moist the next day. Microwaved them to fix that and if you like warm cake then that's a helpful hack. I heard about Gregory's some years ago and had been following OG on Instagram all these years but never got around to pulling up to his establishment. Shoutout to my brother Zo, because we were on our way to Chef Smelly's when I mentioned Gregory's to him and how I hadn't tried them yet. He was like, "na bruh, we gotta go pull up." And I'm glad we did because let me tell you... best desserts I've had. This is now my third time coming in within a one month span I'm embarrassed to admit. I've tried the FatBoy (Combination of Peach Cobbler and Banana Pudding), the sweet potato pie, red velvet cake and a few other cheesecakes. I am SO glad I found this spot while walking to my car. I saw two girls walking up the stairs and that piqued my interest. Curiosity pays off! I went around Thursday at 1PM and there were a few people who were there. It's a super small shop, where you just order and do pick up or takeout only. It's between the iconic murals and you gotta walk a bit downstairs. Inside, they have a few selections, not too many but enough where you have variety and you can see that they specialize in this stuff. The staff (two girls) who worked there (shoutout to Demi) were really helpful and sweet! I decided to try three items. 1. Lake Merritt Special Cheesecake - 5/5 - This was so good, especially if you love chocolate. It has almonds, brownies, and drizzled with chocolate on a cheesecake. 2. Fat Boy - 5/5 - You're telling me this is banana pudding WITH peach cobbler? What an amazing combination and SO GOOD! 3. The food was delicious! I had a jerk chicken croissant, peach cobbler, and pecan sweet potato pie, everything was very tasty. We stopped in to order desserts for a work party. The peach cobbler and blackberry cobbler were a huge hit at the party and everyone loved them. I happened upon Gregory's while out to lunch on a work trip. I went out to eat nearby with a group of coworkers, and a local team member suggested swinging by Gregory's for a sweet treat. My interest was piqued when I saw that the location is one of those hidden hole-in-wall spots tucked down a few stairs off of a sidewalk. The interior is super tiny - either 2 people at a time or 1 "group". It's definitely close quarters but I was able to look around at their cases, which still had a decent selection despite it being around 1pm. If I hadn't already eaten lunch, I would've wanted to try their savory croissants. Hopefully next time! The staff were really helpful in answering my questions (what's in the Best Milkshake cheesecake - coffee and oreo, how long will a slice of cheesecake be okay for if not refrigerated - 2 hours, what cookie flavors do you have available). I ended up getting a slice of the Best Milkshake cheesecake, a chocolate espresso cookie, and a cookies and cream cookie. I took the treats back home to Sacramento to split with my husband and we both agreed that they were all amazing! Super glad my coworker told us about Gregory's so we could try it out. Finally made it to Gregory's! The hours don't correlate with when I'm back home in Oakland so when the stars aligned I was excited! My GPS got me lost so I called the bakery for help. A sweet young lady named Cynthia answered and said she'd run outside and wave. I was one street over but saw Cynthia and made my way to the bakery. Gregory's gives 100% Harlem, Bronx vibes..it's a real deal underground bakery. So many amazing looking options, I got a number of things to take home to my family. Banana pudding, sweet potato cake, carrot cake, peach cobbler and pecan pie. Whew! Everything was DEElicious! My husband is the biggest pecan pie snob and asked me at least three times where I got the pie lol and that Gregory's dethroned his favorite, near decades long bakery. The banana pudding hit so hard I was eight years old again, in my aunts kitchen...I'm patiently watching her layer the wafers so the pudding could set before we devoured it. Sweet potato cake...thank me later. Should have gotten a second piece to freeze for later. OMG. The cobbler comes in regular or "more crust." I mean who thought of such genius? Today was such a stressful day as my best friend was going out of town for her birthday and she LOVES key lime pie. Through my trusty AI friend Claude, I learned that this was the best local bakery in town. Now I did not get to try the pie, BUT I wanted to highlight their level of service and flexibility in making my friend's birthday so special. The gentleman I spoke with was so kind and made a last minute ordeal so special. She's consuming the pie as we speak and she's raving about how delicious it is. Always an amazing place to visit! Mr Gregory knows how to play with sugar! The desserts are very much on the suite end of the spectrum so if you prefer more mild sweets, this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a splurge and ready to indulge, there are many things to choose from here! One of my favorites is always a sweet potato cake and my husband loves the fat boy pudding. It's a small unassuming shop but you'll know it's there by the line of people outside. My favorite dessert over the years has been the Fatboy, it's a mix of banana pudding and peach cobbler. On this occasion, I purchased the Fatboy, peach cobbler cheesecake and a cinnamon roll. I tried each dessert as soon as I got it and forgot to take pictures! The cheesecake is my new favorite dessert and I'm not even a cheesecake person. The cinnamon roll was HUGE and so good, I got home and warmed it up.. easy 10 out of 10.
