Top left is the 8-up cake

In the whirlwind of planning my mom's 80th birthday celebration, I had a sudden, heart-stopping realization -- I forgot the cake. Without hesitation, Gregory's came to mind. I'd heard so many glowing reviews about their baked goods that it felt like fate stepping in right on time. We chose the 8-Up cake (not 7-Up!) and let me just say -- it did not disappoint. Moist, bursting with bright citrus flavor, and finished with that perfectly crunchy crust I absolutely love. Every slice disappeared quickly, and the compliments kept coming. It was the kind of cake that makes you pause mid-bite just to appreciate it. The staff were warm, friendly, and genuinely kind -- the kind of service that makes you feel welcomed instantly. The shop itself is cozy -- two-person maximum -- so you step inside, take in the beautiful display of treats, make your selections, and keep things moving. Efficient, charming, and straight to the point. Of course, I couldn't leave without trying a lemon bar. Sweet, tart, and balanced perfectly on a buttery shortbread crust -- pure sunshine in dessert form. Gregory's saved the celebration -- and sweetened it beautifully.

Stopped by Gregory's a few times over the past few months and saw that I hadn't updated my last review in 5 years ! Consistency is key and in reporting all is well. It's a small shop that turns out some of the best desserts in the Bay Area ! I've been digging in on the various single slice cheesecakes, cakes, cookies and other goodies. There is usually a line to get in especially during lunch hour and there is always something special to checkout. On my last visit they had a banana pudding based dessert with a funny name that I can't remember right now

I am SO glad I found this spot while walking to my car. I saw two girls walking up the stairs and that piqued my interest. Curiosity pays off! I went around Thursday at 1PM and there were a few people who were there. It's a super small shop, where you just order and do pick up or takeout only. It's between the iconic murals and you gotta walk a bit downstairs. Inside, they have a few selections, not too many but enough where you have variety and you can see that they specialize in this stuff. The staff (two girls) who worked there (shoutout to Demi) were really helpful and sweet! I decided to try three items. 1. Lake Merritt Special Cheesecake - 5/5 - This was so good, especially if you love chocolate. It has almonds, brownies, and drizzled with chocolate on a cheesecake. 2. Fat Boy - 5/5 - You're telling me this is banana pudding WITH peach cobbler? What an amazing combination and SO GOOD! 3. Apple Streusel Cheesecake - 100/5 - Apparently this is what got them started and MY GOODNESS, this was AMAZING. Love love love and I am a huge fan of apples. Literally my favorite dessert spot... EVER! Absolutely delicious and you best bet I'll be going back!

If you are looking for a whole pie or a slice, this is the place for you! Underground bakery IYKYK! All the goodies I'm not supposed to have (scones, cheesecake, banana pudding, peach cobbler, cookies, lemon bars, etc!) try them all if you can! ALWAYS celebrating PIE day at work and getting approval $$ to buy the pies here! Chocolate and Key Lime pie for the WIN!

Best desert me and my son have ever had. Will absolutely be going back. Staff were also absolute sweethearts. The fat boy is a must try

Finally made it to Gregory's! The hours don't correlate with when I'm back home in Oakland so when the stars aligned I was excited! My GPS got me lost so I called the bakery for help. A sweet young lady named Cynthia answered and said she'd run outside and wave. I was one street over but saw Cynthia and made my way to the bakery. Gregory's gives 100% Harlem, Bronx vibes..it's a real deal underground bakery. So many amazing looking options, I got a number of things to take home to my family. Banana pudding, sweet potato cake, carrot cake, peach cobbler and pecan pie. Whew! Everything was DEElicious! My husband is the biggest pecan pie snob and asked me at least three times where I got the pie lol and that Gregory's dethroned his favorite, near decades long bakery. The banana pudding hit so hard I was eight years old again, in my aunts kitchen...I'm patiently watching her layer the wafers so the pudding could set before we devoured it. Sweet potato cake...thank me later. Should have gotten a second piece to freeze for later. OMG. The cobbler comes in regular or "more crust." I mean who thought of such genius? More crust, please and thank you! The cobbler wasn't really sweet and the peaches were somewhat al dente. Not bad, just a texture I'm not familiar with when it comes to cobbler. I can't wait to return to try more goodies. Hubby already asked when I am going back to the Town lol

I recently visited Gregory's Gourmet Desserts, got there early, and tried several of their signature cakes and cheesecakes -- and wow, did they deliver. This cozy, somewhat hidden bakery truly lives up to its reputation among locals as "Oakland's best-kept dessert secret." After a short wait in line and it was my turn. I was greeted, picked out the items I wanted to try, the person grabbed all of my items and I was ready to pay in less than a minute. What I Tried -- And Loved "Ugly Duck" Cheesecake Though this cheesecake isn't always advertised on the public menu, I heard longtime fans rave about it -- and I quickly understood why. The "Ugly Duck" cheesecake hits you first with a lovely lemony flavor, a dense rich texture, smoother and more indulgent than a classic New-York-style slice. The creaminess is offset just right by a subtle tanginess that keeps it from feeling overly heavy. Every bite feels decadent -- it's easily among the best cheesecakes I've had in the Bay Area (and other fans seem to agree: one commenter said "the Ugly Duckling cheesecake is to die for"). "Best Milkshake Ever" Cheesecake If you're after something playful and indulgent, this cheesecake is a real treat. The rich coffee flavor lives up to its name: rich, creamy, and slightly nostalgic in a "dessert-milkshake" kind of way. It's a fun twist on cheesecake -- creamy, sweet, and satisfying. The texture felt velvety smooth and the sweetness was balanced nicely, making it a great choice for anyone with a serious sweet tooth. Cookies and Cream Cheesecake For cookies-and-cream lovers, this one hits the spot. The cheesecake base was smooth and creamy, while chunks of cookie (or cookie crust, depending on the slice) added a pleasant contrast: a little bit crunchy, a little bit crumbly. The flavor combination balanced decadence and familiarity -- classic cheesecake richness plus those comforting Oreo-ish cookie notes. It felt like the best of both worlds. Sweet Potato Cake Switching gears from cheesecake, the sweet potato cake was a revelation. Not too sweet, slightly earthy, with warm, comforting flavor -- it felt like a cross between a dessert and a cozy homemade treat. The texture was moist and hearty, and it stood out as a great alternative if you want something less heavy than cheesecake but still deeply satisfying. Gregory's version of a sweet potato cake clearly shows they care about variety and good baking craft. Based on what I tried Gregory's Gourmet Desserts is worth a visit. Next time I go, I'm planning to try more of their rotating cheesecake varieties and maybe a cobbler or two or three.

Small and hidden dessert spot serving up the most delicious cakes, cookies, brownies, and more! Most things are already packed and ready to go so the line moves quickly. I tried the carrot cake and the cookies n cream cheesecake. Both were super fresh and tasted homemade with lots of love. The only thing is that the carrot cake was just a tad bit dry but the icing made up for it. I def want to try more cheesecake flavors next time since everything looked amazing!!!

If you love cheesecake, come here!! First heard of Gregory's from a YouTube video and finally made the drive up to try the famous cheesecakes. They also offer cookies, cake, banana pudding, and other desserts! It's a grab and go spot, but the service was very welcoming and friendly! We got cookies & cream and banana pudding cheesecake slices. Cookies & cream was my favorite of the 2. Not too dense and flavor is spot on.

German Chocolate Cake
Walter B.

This is Walt from Walt's Adventures and I find myself in Oakland, California. Gregory's Gourmet Desserts is an example of the term "whole in the wall" for there is a sign before a downward staircase. Inside, you will find a display case filled with desserts. It is recommended that orders are placed from their online sources. I guarantee you that the creations ordered far surpass the humble facade. The German Chocolate cake we ordered was taken home where it then was highly judged and compared to its various counterparts from the past. This cake from these bakers surpassed all expectations. If you are looking for a fantastic creation for any occasion, instead of simply traveling down the street to your local supermarket, I dare you to adventure to Gregory's Gourmet desserts. Venture down the stairs and through the door to find... magic.

Slice of Coconut Cream Pie (unfortunately it melted by the time I got home)
Rose T.

I had a hard time finding this place and turns out it's an underground bakery! Once you see the sign, walk down a flight of stairs and you will find a small space with bars, cookies, and slices of cake and pie. Since it's a tiny spot, only 1 party is allowed inside. There were 2 people in front of me when I went. After looking at all the offerings, I ordered a slice of the Coconut Cream Pie ($6.99 + tax). +Crust was crumbly and slightly savory, which was a good contrast to the sweet filling. +Very coconutty: Toasted coconut on top was a nice touch. -Extremely sweet: 3 of us couldn't even finish it. -Unfortunately, it melted by the time I got home (~2 hrs). I'd recommend eating or refrigerating it ASAP after purchase. Side notes: 1.) To-go only since there's no seating inside or nearby. 2.) A fork and napkins were included with my order. *Verdict: If you have a HUGE sweet tooth, this might be the place for you.

I saw the amazing reviews and had to see for myself and i'm so happy I did!! The young man was so nice and helped picked popular items, the only thing I didn't like was the cookies and cream cookie but my bf loved it! Very small space but filled with so much flavor I love it

There are glass cases full of breads, cakes, eclairs, tarts and other delicious looking baked goods. On the top of the cases are jars with a variety of cookies to choose from, as well as, one of my favorites, their lemon shortbread bar. The lemon shortbread bar is amazing. They stack the wedges in a large lidded glass jar, each wedge separated with a sheet of white parchment paper. I believe this is one of the hidden gems at La Farine. The shortbread crust Is tender and buttery and hold holds it shape well when you bite into it. The lemon curd is creamy with the right amount of tang, and there is a thin sweet layer of crunch on top of curd that puts this bar over the top. The balance of textures and flavors is perfect. I also highly recommend the chocolate eclairs. Each one is filled with a generous amount of piped whipped cream, a pate choux with good flavor and texture, and topped with a rich, silky layer of chocolate ganache. Overall their prices are reasonable -lemon shortbread bar $3, and chocolate eclair 3.50. I decided to give La Farine four stars because on a previous visit I had a slice of the Moka cake, and was not impressed. It is an attractive and delicious looking cake with lovely pale moka colored frosting surrounding layers of dark chocolate cake, however, the frosting lacked the coffee and chocolate flavor combo that I was looking forward to, and sadly the frosting was more waxy than creamy. That being said, I will definitely be back to search for the next delicious gems at this very lovely bakery on Piedmont Ave.

Sometimes, the pizzas are a little overcooked which causes the crust to be extra crispy and a little burnt. But it doesn't change the deliciousness of it. It doesn't matter what they put on the pizza of the day, I know it's going to be tasty. Arizmendi's pizza 100% makes me forget about meat on pizza. I have tried a couple of their baked goods, which have always been good as well. They also have soups of the day, which I surprisingly haven't tried. If you're ordering more than 1 pizza, I'd recommend calling ahead of time so that you don't have to wait a while. There's typically 2 cashiers, always a small line, but you'd be in and out under 30 minutes max. No music, just the sounds of pure hustle trying to get everyone served. Everyone has causes they care about, and many of us do our own advocacy in different ways, but not everyone wants to sign petitions while trying to cross the street or grab lunch. Today, one person became very insistent when I politely declined. He then accused me (and apparently others) of not wanting to engage because of his skin color, which was completely inappropriate and inaccurate. My decision had nothing to do with our skin .. I simply was not interested in signing anything or stopping to discuss a petition at that moment. It escalated to the point where two other women nearby also felt uncomfortable enough to respond. One said, "This is not the way to do it," and another said, "I don't even have money." It was unfortunate that his approach put people in that position. Just a heads up for anyone visiting: be prepared to be approached at the crosswalk, especially since the light can be long. On a positive note: the pizzeria itself was busy, but everyone inside was pleasant, I found a quiet corner to sit, the coffee was warm, and my $3 slice and $1.25 coffee hit the spot.
