I happened upon Gregory's while out to lunch on a work trip. I went out to eat nearby with a group of coworkers, and a local team member suggested swinging by Gregory's for a sweet treat. My interest was piqued when I saw that the location is one of those hidden hole-in-wall spots tucked down a few stairs off of a sidewalk. The interior is super tiny - either 2 people at a time or 1 "group". It's definitely close quarters but I was able to look around at their cases, which still had a decent selection despite it being around 1pm. If I hadn't already eaten lunch, I would've wanted to try their savory croissants. Hopefully next time! The staff were really helpful in answering my questions (what's in the Best Milkshake cheesecake - coffee and oreo, how long will a slice of cheesecake be okay for if not refrigerated - 2 hours, what cookie flavors do you have available). I ended up getting a slice of the Best Milkshake cheesecake, a chocolate espresso cookie, and a cookies and cream cookie. I took the treats back home to Sacramento to split with my husband and we both agreed that they were all amazing! Super glad my coworker told us about Gregory's so we could try it out. After several failed attempts to reach them by phone, I placed an online order for a Whole Red Velvet Cake on Monday, March 23, to be picked up Friday, March 27 at 1:00 PM. I tried again to call regarding the cake size and if they could add "Happy Birthday"--still no answer. I expected a sheet cake based on price and past purchases, but couldn't confirm because no one answered. On pickup day, anticipating possible delays, I arrived at 2:05 PM. Staff rushed around silently and disorganized, clearly searching for something, until someone finally explained they were looking for a box--strange, since the cake should have been boxed and ready. Meanwhile, an employee asks me to wait outside, which felt unnecessarily rude, and unwarranted, especially since I was the only customer present. Eventually, after much commotion, they found a box. As it turns out the cake was not a sheet cake but a round cake, maybe 6" in diameter? The cake was a surprise for my cousin's retirement and birthday celebration, when we opened it, the frosting looked amateur and unprofessional. Cutting into it revealed hard frosting--more like fondant than cream cheese--and the cake itself was dry. Red velvet cakes are supposed to be moist with rich cream cheese icing, but this cake fell short in both aspects. As we shared the cake, everyone agreed it wasn't good. Gregory is known for his baking, so this experience was confusing; if others bake in his shop, their products should match his standards, or prices should reflect who bakes it. The cake lacked cocoa flavor, possibly from incorrect ingredients, had no baking powder, and the frosting was overwhelmingly sweet without depth. It's disappointing to see quality decline--I've heard similar complaints from friends but previously excused them based on my positive experiences. Now I understand. I am SO glad I found this spot while walking to my car. I saw two girls walking up the stairs and that piqued my interest. Curiosity pays off! I went around Thursday at 1PM and there were a few people who were there. It's a super small shop, where you just order and do pick up or takeout only. It's between the iconic murals and you gotta walk a bit downstairs. Inside, they have a few selections, not too many but enough where you have variety and you can see that they specialize in this stuff. The staff (two girls) who worked there (shoutout to Demi) were really helpful and sweet! I decided to try three items. 1. Lake Merritt Special Cheesecake - 5/5 - This was so good, especially if you love chocolate. It has almonds, brownies, and drizzled with chocolate on a cheesecake. 2. Fat Boy - 5/5 - You're telling me this is banana pudding WITH peach cobbler? What an amazing combination and SO GOOD! 3. The food was delicious! I had a jerk chicken croissant, peach cobbler, and pecan sweet potato pie, everything was very tasty. We stopped in to order desserts for a work party. The peach cobbler and blackberry cobbler were a huge hit at the party and everyone loved them. The only downside was that we couldn't place an order in person for whole pies and pans of food and had to order online instead, which was a bit inconvenient since our company provides cash to pay. Finally made it to Gregory's! The hours don't correlate with when I'm back home in Oakland so when the stars aligned I was excited! My GPS got me lost so I called the bakery for help. A sweet young lady named Cynthia answered and said she'd run outside and wave. I was one street over but saw Cynthia and made my way to the bakery. Gregory's gives 100% Harlem, Bronx vibes..it's a real deal underground bakery. So many amazing looking options, I got a number of things to take home to my family. Banana pudding, sweet potato cake, carrot cake, peach cobbler and pecan pie. Whew! Everything was DEElicious! My husband is the biggest pecan pie snob and asked me at least three times where I got the pie lol and that Gregory's dethroned his favorite, near decades long bakery. The banana pudding hit so hard I was eight years old again, in my aunts kitchen...I'm patiently watching her layer the wafers so the pudding could set before we devoured it. Sweet potato cake...thank me later. Should have gotten a second piece to freeze for later. OMG. The cobbler comes in regular or "more crust." I mean who thought of such genius? Small and hidden dessert spot serving up the most delicious cakes, cookies, brownies, and more! Most things are already packed and ready to go so the line moves quickly. I went to Gregory's Gourmet Desserts and tried their lemon cream pie and the banana pudding cheesecake. Both of them were really good but I honestly liked the lemon cream pie more. I'm a huge lemon girl and I love anything lemon so this one was right up my alley. It tasted really fresh and I was told it was baked that morning. The slice was huge too. I took a few bites and still had plenty left to save for after dinner. The banana pudding cheesecake was good as well. It wasn't anything super crazy but it reminded me a little of a Turkish Basque style cheesecake with banana on top. It had a really nice texture and still tasted great. Once you see the sign, walk down a flight of stairs and you will find a small space with bars, cookies, and slices of cake and pie. Since it's a tiny spot, only 1 party is allowed inside. There were 2 people in front of me when I went. After looking at all the offerings, I ordered a slice of the Coconut Cream Pie ($6.99 + tax). +Crust was crumbly and slightly savory, which was a good contrast to the sweet filling. +Very coconutty: Toasted coconut on top was a nice touch. -Extremely sweet: 3 of us couldn't even finish it. -Unfortunately, it melted by the time I got home (~2 hrs). This was my first time trying Gregory's Gourmet Desserts. We tried the Brownie (got the last one), and the Sweet Potato Cake . Beware of the brownie if you don't like a very rich, dark chocolate type of brownie. I finished it off, my sister couldn't handle it . I'm a long time fan of Gregory's Gourmet, unfortunately I live in the South Bay and don't go to Oakland often. But whenever I do find myself there I always make a stop at Gregory's. It's a small unassuming shop but you'll know it's there by the line of people outside. My favorite dessert over the years has been the Fatboy, it's a mix of banana pudding and peach cobbler. On this occasion, I purchased the Fatboy, peach cobbler cheesecake and a cinnamon roll. I tried each dessert as soon as I got it and forgot to take pictures! The cheesecake is my new favorite dessert and I'm not even a cheesecake person. The cinnamon roll was HUGE and so good, I got home and warmed it up.. easy 10 out of 10. When I showed up there was just 1 guy waiting before us, he let us know that only 1 customer (unless you're in a group of 2, then 2 max) allowed inside at a time. By the time we went in there was already a line behind us, so I felt a bit rushed - otherwise I would've spent a lot longer looking at everything cuz the options all looked tempting. The only thing I didn't like are the prices. Pretty expensive for the portion size. I didn't get an itemized receipt so idk which is which, but my total for those 3 items was about $20. read more

I have known this place since 2016 when I first spotted it. I have always loved it but as I am aging and as I bake more at home and eat more at home I have started to realize it is absolutely too sweet. Came by this last weekend for my old time favorite sweet potato carrot cake, chokoi chip cookie and chocolate cream pie. The cookie was actually not impressive as I had remembered so that was disappointing. My favorite sweet potatoes as always was so good but that frosting always kills it - it is way too sweet. I always bake carrot cake with frosting for my daughter's bday but I never put that much sugar so you can actually enjoy it without ur teeth hurting. Once we all three shared it and felt bad afterwards - just too sweet. It doesnt need to be that sweet to enjoy it. Truly is Oakland's best kept secret. You may walk right past this delicious bakery as it is located behind a gate, down some stairs, and behind another door. Recently it has been growing in popularity so there may be a line, especially on weekends. They only allow one party in at a time, and it's like walking into your own personal bakery closet ha!
