Typical Berkeley establishment they make quality foods but very limited amount amounts Always check before going because they might be closed even though they have posted hours happened to me twice already. They usually only open two or three days a week sometimes they open on the days that aren't posted. Not withstanding try the Basque cheesecake it is delicious.

ponyo ramen sando (just char siu. A bit too dry for my liking)
Tatsuya N.

My wife and I tried the ajitsuke tamago sando and ponyo's ramen sando. While the presentation & packaging deserves an A+, the flavors were a bit disappointing. The tamago sando was waaaaay too salty, by the end of the sandwich we were downing waters. The ponyo ramen sando is more just thick fatty char siu in bread, which was good and flavorful for the first few bites, but the lack of moisture in the meat paired with the air-ish texture of the milk bread left us reaching out for our waters (again). The taste of the bread itself is fine- a very slight hint of sweetness and soft, though I wouldn't exactly call it fluffy soft. I probably won't be coming here for a meal, perhaps more for the basque cheesecakes or the bread loafs.

Egg sando, chicken tofu sando, basque cheesecake and a shokupan
Marcos S.

Great service, cute and simple counter and offering. The egg sando was to die for. Jammy Soy egg cut in half plus egg salad from the same. Just the right umami, unctuous and creamy. The milk bread was soooo good, imagine wonder white bread, less sweet, more milk flavor, healthy ingredients and thick cut. Has a lovely chew to it and is super addictive. Chicken tofu was in a burger patty, nice flavor and the shiso leaf garnish adds a Japanese flair. Never had basque cheesecake though I've been to Basque Country, don't usually like cheesecake but this was very tasty. It's almost pudding like in texture with a tang and crème brûlée top. Just lovely. Definitely recommend.

Selections during soft opening

Went to the soft opening of Milk Cloud Bakery for their Japanese milk bread pastries. Parking was a challenge due to the commercial area. A line was already forming when we got there 10 minutes before opening. The selection was just 9 items as it was a soft opening. 3 examples of shokupan(milk bread) were available, and 3 examples of basque cheesecake, and 3 examples of sando. We got 5 pastries across the 3 categories for our initial taste test. I have to say we had high expectations due to the social media hype, and while some pastries were good, some are still work in progress. First of all, milk breads are supposed to be incredibly soft and fluffy. In this regard, Milk Cloud did not quite deliver. The breads from the pastries we tried weren't soft and fluffy as I would expect, but closer to regular bread. That was a disappointment. Second, the basque cheesecakes(Crème brûlée, banana chocolate) we got started to melt within minutes after we purchased them. I have never seen basque cheesecakes started to melt so quickly. Not sure if there was something amiss with the recipe, but it is something they will have to fix. Taste wise it felt off as the structure was not there. As for the mala pulled pork sando, it was nothing special and for the price it was super expensive. What we liked best was the pineapple Kaya shokupan bun and the Ajitsuke Tamago Sando. The Ajitsuke Tamago sando has a nicely seasoned soft boiled egg on top and the egg salad filling was yummy. The staff were all friendly and nice on soft opening. We will wait awhile before a return visit and hopefully they will have ironed out the kinks.

Basque cheesecake

Came here because of the hype but it didn't meet my high expectations. The flavors are good for sure but I equate it to tasting like what a very good baker friend in college would make. Great ingredients like Alexander Organic A2 milk etc but they are missing the hook, the AHA, the WOW factor. The basque cheesecake tastes great but my taste buds say they used Philadelphia cream cheese, a great cheese to use as a home cook but I expected something more I cannot easily get at my local grocery store from the price. The Shokupan bread is a bit underwhelming because for a milk bread, I expected a more stringy and bouncy bread with more gluten. More elastic and the pores finer and not so coarse. Flavor is reasonable but texture could improve to be softer using imported high quality flour. The pineapple kaya bun seems to use the same flour. I liked the crust but the bread could improve. Kaya is a special flavor for sure but the pandan flavor makes Kaya hard to screw up. I had the Strawberry Sando with seasame cream the first time I came. Again, bread is ok, strawberry is pedestrian, but the sesame cream is elevated but is still missing a wow.

Black Sesame Matcha Basque Cheesecake
DJ. N.

Fantastic, "not too sweet" perfectly cooked was able to taste the perfect combination of flavors of the Black Sesame Matcha Basque Cheesecake. Goes really well with a strong tea or coffee. We arrived a bit late so most items were sold out. Definitely need to return to sample more of the items.

Really cute spot. Street has a row of other cafés, which is a lovely area to frequent. There's plenty of seating outside. Tried 1 sando and 2 basque cheesecakes (banana and lemon yuzu). Absolutely loved how creamy the cheesecakes were, but felt it was a bit pricey for the portion size. Also got the ajitsuke tamago sando. Pretty good, but I would've preferred a creamier filling.

I'm changing my review to be more thorough and honest. The food here is good and cute but like someone said the cheesecake does melt and I was given an egg sandwich missing the topping g of a 1/2 egg but charged full price and when I wrote the business on social media they did not respond. I also was pushed behind a group of three that ordered after me in waiting to receive my order I'm assuming because they had a bigger order so it was deemed more important. This is a fun date spot with unique food but I won't be returning after my experience. I also tried to mention to the staff that the coffee they made would have done great because many people in line wanted to buy coffee but was flat out ignored when talking to the woman who was handling the coffee. So happy for the success of the bakery but feel really unappreciated as a customer. I had even been messaging the day before the very first soft opening and made an attempt to place an order of multiple items and went multiple days. I will say one staff remembered my name I'm not sure how maybe their POS or perhaps she did recognize me. Either way I would adjust expectations when attending.

The cheese roll is a must, but beware, it can sell out by around 10am. And that damn chocolate almond croissant is an absolute yes every damn time. Take it home, warm it up, and thank me later. The melty chocolate inside with all that almond goodness baked on top?! oouff Heavenly. I'll occasionally get the veggie quiche slice too, especially when they have the corn & potato one. Somehow I always stick to my same three favorites even though everything in those cases looks amazing. I really need to venture out already because those cakes?! Whew. The two gentlemen who usually help me are always so nice, keep the line moving and are welcoming too, great service every time. Yes, it's a little pricey, but I mean...you're in the Berkeley Hills and isn't EVERYTHING overly expensive nowadays? At least here, I leave feeling like it was worth it. Worth the line. Worth spinning the block for parking. Next time I'm getting an assorted box to "share." Anyway, I've already said too much. Please don't make the line longer.

I got the Strawberry Lychee Roasted Matcha Latte (Hojicha) and the Ube Coconut Butter Mochi Donut As I've been more into hojicha lately, I had to try the strawberry and lychee flavor! It was perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. I loved it! The donut was so chewy and delicious, and the Ube flavor on top was amazing. I also love that it's an open kitchen, so you can actually see them making everything fresh. It smells SO good when you walk in! Definitely add this place to your list if you're around the area! FYI, there's no designated parking lot, but there's plenty of street parking around. There's also no seating inside. Especially at the price point, you expect a more premium drink. The matcha was gritty and tasted mostly like milk, with just an essence of whatever flavor it was paired with. For the price, I was expecting something much more flavorful and refined. The donuts were fine, but nothing particularly special or memorable. Overall, I just don't think the drinks or donuts justify the price compared to what's available now.

Their sandwiches are probably what first got me hooked. The bread is so good, with a chewy inside and a nice crust, and the fillings are always fresh and flavorful. The combinations are also really well thought out. From there, I started working my way through the rest of the menu. I've had their Kouign Amann, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, baguette, Sourdough Batard, Sunflower Rye Spelt, pretzel buns (you can probably tell I'm a bread person), pies, seasonal radicchio salad, and passionfruit madeleines. Their seasonal radicchio salad has actually become one of my favorites to take to work for lunch. I also love that they rotate the Kouign Amann flavors, so there's usually something new to try whenever I stop by. I've enjoyed almost everything I've had here. One pie was a little too sweet for me personally, but that's really the only thing that comes to mind. I also really like the presentation and the atmosphere. The pastry case always looks beautiful and tempting, and the space feels relaxed and welcoming. It's easy to pop in and grab something, but it's also a nice place to meet friends for coffee and something sweet. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality, which is another reason I keep coming back. More than anything, I just really enjoy having Starter Bakery in the area. It's become one of my neighborhood go-to spots, and I always seem to find another reason to stop by.

The ambiance is wonderful - I absolutely love the deep blue color scheme, the cute matching mugs, and gorgeous plants. They have a lot of different pastry choices, but unfortunately, there was only one vegan option: a tiny hazelnut sweet bread. I ordered the bread along with an Americano. When I tried to take the pastry out of the package to share it with my girlfriend, it completely crumbled into a big mess. I went up to the counter to let them know, and the employee told me it was actually meant to be eaten straight from the package. She mentioned it was on the drier side being vegan, she took the crumbled mess and gave me a new one but it ended up having the exact same issue. It wasnt dry, but it just wouldn't hold any moisture and was far too crumbly to eat. For $5, this tiny pastry was a major letdown. To make the interaction weirder, she took the original crumbled bread back from me and I'm only assuming threw it away, which felt entirely unnecessary. Having been vegan for nine years, I've had some truly amazing, moist vegan baked goods, so this was incredibly disappointing. While the vibe and aesthetic are great, the vegan options were major letdown. CC accepted Restroom available

It's like a morning bun, and the texture of the morning bun is light, fluffy. Lots of sugar on it, it shedded everywhere while eating. The filling is the star. It's the strongest pandan flavored anything I've ever had. You can smell the pandan before you even bite into it. It's a lot like a brioche bun (not dissimilar to challah in texture) with a pandan-flavored concha top. It has a cream-style pandan filling which is a SUPER strong pandan flavor. Generously filled, very generously. Will definitely return if I can. Their flavors are on a rotating basis. The woman at the counter was enthusiastic and polite, eagerly answered questions.
