Charmed by the French-style bakery storefront and tidy shelves of baked goods, I stopped in at La Farine to purchase a bread loaf. While La Farine has a smaller pastry selection than its neighboring bakeries on College Ave., it has an impressive variety of baguettes and sourdough loafs. I ordered a mini kalamata olive loaf, which was the perfect size for snacking. Service was quick and efficient, and I took my bread to-go to enjoy at home. I appreciated how the loaf is baked with more olives per square inch than any olive bread I have ever tasted. The sourdough had a good chew without being too tough and was soft and fluffy on the inside. The tangy sourdough and briny olives needed little else but were enhanced with a pat of French butter. On my next visit, I'd like to try La Farine's other sourdough loaves and baguettes. read more

The fruit tarts here are one of the best I've ever had. Fruits are really fresh and the tart is not too sweet, I think it can be refreshing at times. Service is good, quick and friendly. A cute bakery where you line up and pick out the items you want. Bread is also good, but the highlight is definitely the Star. Pastries were really buttery, flaky, and they had a very unique selection of different desserts that I would love to be able to all try one day. Their mocha cake was incredibly rich and delicious, which I would highly recommend, and we also ordered their lemon shortbread that had a very strong taste of lemon but it was too sweet for my own palate. read more

Was in the area and decided to drop by because I love a pastry and this place did not disappoint! We ordered a morning bun, choclatine, and a mini chocolate chip pumpkin cake. The morning bun was delicious, crispy croissant layers but also soft and doughy (not undercooked but just right) on the inside. The chocolate chip pumpkin cake was also good and had lots of chocolate chips but was a little dry for my liking. The choclatine was my favorite and is easily one of the best chocolatw croissants I've had in the area. Everything was also reasonably priced. For Christmas my friend bought my family and I this fruit tart. Yes, it looks like any other fruit tart, but wow, it didn't even last 24 hours. We demolished it. Did I mention I'm super picky about crust and custard? Well, this fruit tart knocked it out of the park! Pretty good, it's better than some other bakeries, but it's not Porto's! I didn't really find anything extraordinary here but everything was good enough at least, definitely not bad. I'd rate it around 3.5-3.9 overall, better than 3 stars so I rounded up to 4 They are friendly and quick. Place is cute, stuff is very nicely presented, I love how it looks, just the place is kinda small. It feels a bit crowded and I got confused on where I should stand after 2 more people came in after me. Then 2 more people showed up and it felt really crowded. I think the lining up and ordering system could be more efficient but I'm not sure how exactly to go about making it better lol. I don't know how they could have more than like 5 customers in here at the same time. I think they can comfortably serve up to 2-3 people at the same time at most. Definitely not good for groups. Ideally just come in alone and spend no more than 2-3 minutes inside. Good thing everything is made and ready to go and there's no seating or it would be a nightmare! read more

What a cute little bakery! Located on College Avenue near Rockridge, La Marine is such a classic spot! A good variety of baked good to choose from and loads of different breads! Their walls are lined with different loaves and baguettes, so nice! I opted for a simple sour baguette and an apple croissant. Delicious! The bread went with everything I was making that weekend and made a really good sandwich too. The apple croissant was light and crispy, and is easily a favorite of mine now. Hands down, La Farine has the best fruit tarts!! While I have never been to the store myself, my family LOVES the fruit tarts from La Farine and rank it as the best fruit tart they've had. Beautiful bakery location. I love the exterior from the blue tiles, to the shiny windows, leading one to walk inside to find a large array of goodies! I am so glad that I walked in. I had ordered a bunch of things to bring back home with me to share with my mom. They have so many things to choose from -- I like to take my time to browse so I had a few people go ahead of me. I would say the staff is quick and attentive, but again, I needed more time to scan the place to see what they had. I was craving an almond croissant and found this place on Yelp. The almond croissant only has a sprinkling of almonds on the top! Nothing inside!!! Just tastes like a saltier version of a Costco croissant. Also misshapen as you can see in the photo. Took it home and ate it with cheese as it was salty. Also got a chocolate croissant. This was also high in salt. It took several bites to get to any chocolate. Only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is that when I finally got to the chocolate, it was nice and creamy not hard chocolate like some. Unless you love regular pecan nuts, do not get the pecan pie. It consists of pie crust and a pile of pecans. It doesn't have any custard filling which makes a pie a pie. It was disappointing to bite into what I thought was a pie, only to find it was just a pile of nuts. I honestly can't imagine someone being happy with this pie. It's odd that one can hardly get a fine croissant or just any other baked good in the East Bay Monday or Tuesday. Thank Heavens for La Farine!!! Not only do they make all the terrific French basics, just about everything else they make is superb. I'm a big fan of the Suisse Twinkie, but I love love love the host of savory goodies they bake every day. We got a few pastries from La Farine and they were outstanding. Five stars. We picked up a Raspberry Croissant ($4.50), Chocolate Eclair ($2.95), and Mini Cupcake ($2.25). To give you an idea of how good these were, I was completely stuffed from lunch and still inhaled these. I wasn't expecting to eat anything. The Raspberry Croissant came in the shape of a rectangle. It was wonderfully flaky with a delicious icing on top and a luscious raspberry filling inside. It was perfect. The Chocolate Eclair was fluffy and light with a generous portion of cream inside. It was superb. The Mini Cupcake was pumpkin spice flavor. It was dense and moist, and the frosting was on the sweeter side. Overall, these were all high-quality, well-made, delectable baked treats. My wife and I would definitely be regulars here if we lived in the area. She noticed this place after we had just eaten lunch at nearby Southie (excellent restaurant, by the way: https://www.yelp.com/biz/southie-oakland ). We took our pastries and ate them on the sidewalk patio with coffee from/at nearby Cole Coffee (cafe, also excellent: https://www.yelp.com/biz/cole-coffee-oakland-2 ). So, we had a true, local Rockridge experience on this particular afternoon. La Farine doesn't have any seating. This is strictly a to-go/takeout bakery and patisserie. It's small and it smelled really good inside. There were shelves and two display cases stocked with a nice, wide variety of fresh-baked breads, cakes, cookies, and more. A couple of the more unique items I saw were Persimmon Pudding ($20.00) and slices of Plum Frangipane tart ($4.25 each). They also offered a very limited selection of coffee and tea. La Farine partnered with McLaughlin Coffee of Emeryville to create their own private label coffee. The bakery is traditional, not trendy. Our La Farine bag said, "Est. 1977." I believe this location on College Avenue is the original. At the time of writing this review, there are three locations in Oakland. I noticed the Fruitvale location shares the same distinct blue tiles on its storefront as this location in Rockridge. Service was great. I recommend this place. read more

Phenomenal experience at this La Farine this past Wednesday with a worker named Bianca. La Farine has been a personal and family favorite for decades now, shoutout to their apricot soda bread which is *heavenly* toasted with butter. My mom took me when I was younger, and now I love to take my own daughter there. She's 2 and has fully accepted her toddler state of angel/lunatic, and Bianca was so incredibly kind to her it made me smile all day. My daughter introduced herself and Bianca talked to directly to her asking her what she wanted, to which my daughter yelled 'Quiche!'. Bianca was so incredibly patient and kind to me and my daughter (there was no line so no one waiting) and it left me raving to any and all family and friends how wonderful she was. Toddlers are no joke, and my daughter is picky about who she likes. It was just so wonderful and made my whole day better. 1000 stars for Bianca and all the La Farine workers. I will absolutely be coming back and could not have been more satisfied. Also shoutout to the ham and cheese quiche which my daughter devoured and wouldn't let me touch. Amazing little bakery that can build a line out the door because the pastries are worth it. The Savory Morning Bun is out of the world, filled with ham and cheese with a flaky, light pastry bun. This is definitely a must-have if you're not feeling the sweeter options. The Chocolate Croissant is super flaky with a nice amount of chocolate in the middle. And, it's less than 4 dollars which is amazing because other places are charging 6+ for their artisan chocolate croissants. The savory focaccia with goat cheese and pinenuts was alright, I wouldn't get it again as the flavor was not as impactful as say, the morning bun. I asked the staff about the more popular items and they said the Raspberry Croissant sells out early, so I got that in a second visit and although it may not be as flaky and airy as the chocolate, it's got a good sweetness and size to it while not being overwhelmingly sweet. Inside screams little bakery with the wide assortment of breads, pastries, cakes and cookies. This place is more of a takeout place with no seating inside. Parking is street parking. La Farine has been my family's go-to spot for years. Their bread is good, the tarts are delicious, and they are our all-time favorite! Unfortunately, their customer service has declined. I stopped this morning, very excitedly, to grab some tarts. The employee asked me for my fruit preference and noted that they had the tarts in the back. I asked for two tarts with mango and berries. She looked at me, annoyed, and in an unpleasant tone said they didn't make tarts with mango and berries-- I was confused because in the past I had gotten tarts with this fruit combination, so I asked for clarification on whether they didn't have any at the moment or if they no longer make that combination at all. At this point, another worker stops, they both look even more bothered, and say no, they no longer make tarts with mango and berries. I found this strange, but I said ok. I then asked for the two tarts to have any of the fruits mentioned above. I got my tarts, one of them cracked from the side. Needless to say, I left the store feeling unwelcome, overwhelmed by the employee's animosity, and with two tarts not of my choice but theirs, a bitter experience nonetheless. read more

Glad we toke the drive in we parked on college the place is on college but in the area we parked it was a great 10 minute work I already paid fir parking do we walked glad we did it was very nice walking thru the neighborhood. Now the walnut raspberry scone was good but not like the walnut scone at Fournee bakery that's the best hands down and the almond croissant sorry still better at Fournee but the raisin rye bread was not bad at all . Bakery located along Piedmont in Oakland. La Farine is a solid bakery. There is a reason why people walk up and down the streets with bags of baked goods. I enjoy my chocolate croissants and they have some good ones in addition to some good bread. I will say their coffee is not on the same level. There are other places nearby that I would go for a drip coffee or a latte instead (to pair with my baked good). I've also purchased beans from here and they aren't my personal style given that I prefer less of a dark roast and more fruity flavor. I had the opportunity to try one of La Farine's fruit tarts recently thanks to a friend's birthday celebration. It came neatly packaged inside of a La Farine box, which stayed together pretty well even though I had to walk and carry it for about 25 minutes to my friend's place. The tart itself was delicious, the fruit was fresh and the part underneath it was nice and sweet for anyone who has a sweet tooth. The crust itself is a bit hard though and takes some force with a utensil to break through, which can cause flaking or pieces to fly off (though this isn't necessarily unusual compared to other fruit tarts I've had from other bakeries). But overall the tart was yummy and nicely decorated. read more
