Philtered soul
Lasya R.

Yummiest drinks! Philtered soul with honey drizzle is my go to. Service can be kind of slow but it's usually packed and busy so that makes sense. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Lots of seating but can fill up quick.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great study spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

It says sweet sugar but tasted like no sugar...

First time here. Placed an order through the app while driving there - about 6-8 minutes away. Got there and waited another 10-12 minutes for my coffee... there were a few customers there but everyone had their coffee already so I'm not sure what took so long for mine. Took my first sip in the car and it was so bland like they forgot to add sugar... I thought maybe I made a mistake and forgot to make the adjustment while ordering but nope it says clearly on my cup " sweet sugar" Will not be coming back to this location.

Medium Iced Mint Mojito (~$6)
Aya E.

Ordered: Medium Iced Mint Mojito (~$6) Aya's take: Whenever I'm back in the Bay, I make an effort to make my way to a Philz to re-experience the deliciousness that is the Mint Mojito. It always get it the "House Way" which is sweet & creamy. And I love the fresh mint on top tying it all together. This is THE drink for a caffeine kick, aromatic notes, with a balance of sweetness and creaminess. My only mistake was getting a Medium instead of a Large. Do yourself a favor and try it!

I ordered a drink and two bags of beans on this Saturday morning. When I got there, I could tell that they were severely understaffed. Two ladies making drinks, and one lady behind the counter. With a big line of customers ready to order. My drink was ready but my beans were not. when I grabbed my drink, I knew it was made it wrong right away because I ordered it hot and it was iced. I could obviously tell they were busy, so I weighed the options and decided that I'll just take the drink because it's definitely not worth trying and have them remake it. I then sat patiently for a few minutes while the customer line cleared. I asked about my beans and was met with a cold response. The lady behind the counter didn't even seem to acknowledge what I was telling her and just responded with "I'm a little backed up right now." I put my online order in at 8:05 AM. My order was meant to be picked up at 8:15 AM. I basically got shooed away when I was supposed to have my order. So I again stepped back and waited thinking that my bags will be up soon. 15 minutes later I'm watching customers I know ordered after me, because they were in line when I got there and I ordered online, getting their full orders. So I again approached the register, and tried to explain to them that my beans were ordered before those customers even got to the store. Nothing but dismissive faces and tones, again, is what I got. "Everything ticket here was put in order, I'm getting to it" was what I was told. One of the ladies making the coffees then finally goes to make my beans and she only makes one bag. She didn't read the order and I had to tell her that I need another one. What happened next was very revealing. While I did receive a few apologies, they were insincere. So the girl behind the counter, then starts to make my second bag of beans. They must've thought that I couldn't hear them but the two girls making drinks started to gossip about what happened to my order. One whispers "it was an online order" and the other must've acknowledged this because they then started LAUGHING. Besides being horrible customer service representers, what they did is they revealed that my ticket came through them and whoever made my coffee put my beans ticket in with the orders that were at the register. I didn't get my full order until 8:38 AM and to top it off my second bag of beans obviously has less in it then my first bag. Picture shows that. It's pretty hard to have bad customer service and then you make the customer feel bad for your bad customer service, but these employees accomplished that today. This location won't have to worry about my orders bugging them anymore

Was in a rush to get my coffee and go home for something urgent so I literally downloaded the mobile app so that it would be there by the time I arrived. Got there 5 minutes late, and they were confused why I was there. Told them I ordered an oat mint mojito with honey and was told another customer must have taken my drink. I was quite shocked, but even more shocked by the total LACK of customer service or apology on my behalf from Isabella who was supposed to serve my drink. She didn't care at all or even acknowledge the issue of my paid drink being stolen or say any type of apology. Just gave it to Shannon to deal with the problem. Of course, I ended up having to wait an extra 15 minutes for my drink to be made when I had already preordered it 20 mins before on the app and paid $8... Extremely disappointing and unprofessional, won't be coming back.

Too Good to Go surprise bag
Sydney J.

I happened to have some free time on a Friday evening and saw that this Philz location is on Too Good to Go, so I ordered a surprise bag. I came to pick up, the staff were friendly and quick with helping with me and since they only had two pastries left at that time of day, they gave me two bagels. I think one of the pastries was a kouign-amann (not totally sure, I'm not the best at identifying pastries) and I thought it was pretty good even though I don't usually like these kinds of flakey baked goods that are similar to croissants. They included a cookie too, which was just alright. As for the bagels, they were pretty cheesy but slightly spicy, probably contained jalapeno in them. Everything was decent overall, not the freshest tasting but they are leftovers that were probably there at least the whole day after all - not sure if Philz bakes these on site or buys them elsewhere.

Rose coffee

A great place to work, but I don't think their drinks are all that special. This Philz is located right next to the Safeway, and has plenty of seating and outlets available inside. I arrived on a Wednesday morning and had no trouble finding a seat. I ordered the iced coffee rose with oat milk, which came out to just over $5 for a small. It's one of their specialty drinks, but honestly I didn't really think it was anything special. There wasn't really a rose flavor, and it just tasted like normal iced coffee that was mildly sweet. It wasn't bad, but I can't justify the price when I could make something just as good at home. Maybe I just tried the wrong thing, but I probably wouldn't order that again.

Tiffany A.

I'm no coffee connoisseur. I've have bad coffee and I've had good coffee. Nothing special. In fact, I never expect to be blown away by a cup of coffee. This morning I read an article that mentioned Philz as a 'Bay Area Favorite'. I decided to check it out. I fully expected there to be a line, fortunately it wasn't. Street parking can be difficult, but there is a Safeway parking lot right next door. I ordered the gingersnap iced coffee. $5.95. I consider that average now a days. There was maybe a five minute wait. I was blown away at 1st sip. The coffee was delicious! It was unlike any other coffee I've tried. I fully understand the hype. I'd for sure come back. Great cup of Mint Mojito always does the trick when I want a very minty creamy brew of coffee that is consistent every time. I also decided to try out their Sweet Harmony. The Sweet Harmony it is just as creamy as the mint mojito but without the mint leaves instead it is replaced with cinnamon. This was a nice change up, but I'm such a mint lover that I'll always get my Mint Mojito. Besides a great cup of coffee, this location offers free Milk-bone doggy treats. The only request they make is that dogs aren't allowed in their store, so you take it to go. Whenever I see a Philz, you'll be sure to see me there.

Alejandra D.

I love me my mint mojito, extra creamy! Philz is such a treat when I'm in the bay. The guy taking orders was so kind and I could see he'd had a day, but didn't let that stop him from bring upbeat with me. There's seating outdoors next to the Safeway.

I've spent years searching for a red velvet cake that actually tastes like red velvet instead of…read morevanilla cake dyed red. Gregory's Desserts finally ended that search. The moment your fork slides through it, you know it's different. The cake is unbelievably moist with that velvety crumb red velvet is supposed to have. It isn't dry, crumbly, or overly fluffy. It's soft enough to melt in your mouth, yet substantial enough to give you that satisfying bakery bite. Every layer is rich, tender, and perfectly balanced. Then comes the cream cheese frosting... and this is where they completely win you over. It's thick, silky, and luxuriously smooth without being overly sweet. It has just enough tang to balance the richness of the cake, creating that perfect bite where neither the frosting nor the cake overpowers the other. The flavor is what keeps replaying in your head hours later. You get that subtle cocoa note that's unique to authentic red velvet, followed by the creamy tang of the frosting that practically melts across your tongue. It's rich without feeling heavy, sweet without becoming overwhelming. Every bite somehow tastes just as good as the first. This isn't the kind of cake you politely eat because someone brought dessert. This is the kind of cake where you pause after the first bite, look at it for a second, and think... "Where has this been all my life?" If you've been chasing that bakery-quality, melt-in-your-mouth red velvet cake that lives rent-free in your memory long after it's gone, stop searching. Run to Gregory's Desserts. This one creates a new standard.

A few years ago, there was definitely a dip in communication when I was trying to order a birthday cake, but since then, I've had the pleasure of enjoying Gregory's treats many times. His cheesecake is truly unlike any I've ever had. The chocolate brownies and chocolate chip cookies are so good, they'll make you feel like you're not even on planet Earth! Seriously, they're that delicious. And the chocolate cake? It tastes like it was baked by a sweet Southern grandmother. It literally melts in your mouth. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that every time I go, I buy all four items and happily eat them over the next few days! Hands down, Gregory's is the BEST BAKERY IN OAKLAND. If you haven't been yet, you're missing out!

Overall, it's been a good experience every time. Parking can be challenging depending on the time of day. Most of the parking is on the street, so you'll need to keep an eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists while looking for a spot. That's probably the biggest inconvenience of visiting this place. There is usually a 15 to 20-minute wait whenever we come for dessert, but we've always been seated within the quoted wait time, which we appreciate. The restaurant itself is fairly small, so the dining area can feel crowded. Tables are very close together, and you're practically sitting back-to-back with other guests. Because of this, the noise level can get pretty high, and it's easy to overhear conversations from nearby tables. The desserts are the highlight here. The BingSu is excellent, and the lava cake is one of our favorites. The menu is accessed through a QR code, making ordering simple and convenient. Food portions are decent, although prices are definitely on the premium side. Service is efficient, and the food and desserts usually arrive pretty quickly. We used to go to their city location regularly, but over the years we've found ourselves visiting this location more often because the area feels more comfortable and convenient for us. That has made this our go-to spot whenever we're craving dessert. Overall, this is a great place for dessert. The quality of the desserts keeps us coming back, but the difficult parking situation and cramped seating prevent it from being a full 5-star experience. Would definitely return for the BingSu and lava cake.

If you haven't tried them yet, go before it's too late! I've been lucky enough to try four of their flavors, and each one showcases their signature silky texture and deep flavor. All are not too sweet! My personal favorite is the Kyoto Matcha - the matcha is high-quality, with a vivid green color and rich flavor that balances beautifully with the creamy cheesecake base. The Original is a classic for a reason with deeply caramelized top and creamy interior. I also tried the Iribancha, a roasted green tea flavor. It's intense, smoky, and unique..maybe not one I could finish in one sitting, but definitely memorable and recommend for those who want that earthy/smoky taste. The truffle was also a standout, adding just enough umami to round out the sweetness. Preorders drop via Instagram (@basukucheesecakes) and sell out lightning-fast. Otherwise, plan to line up for slices! Wishing Basuku all the best on their next chapter. Fingers crossed for a return to the Bay someday! Until then, don't miss your chance to try what might be the best cheesecake you've ever had.
