Went here before Mosswood Meltdown, it was my second visit. Previously I had the clay pot catfish, which is a reliably wonderful dish anywhere it's made, but this time I decided to try the ribs. These are no ordinary ribs--they are crusted with a sweet, salty glaze with a bit of fish sauce and covered in roasted sesame seed. It came in three beautifully stacked pieces, at least two bones each, with a bit of pink pickled onion. If I ordered it again I might request some more of the pickled onion. It's a large portion, plenty to share, but ... I didn't share, it was too good! read more

I didn't realize until after Jamie W and I came here that the original and now closed location was on Polk St across the bay in San Francisco. Yes, I tried it over a dozen years ago and have little recollection of my dining experience (review: https://yelp.to/8rBLt3xnAB). Probably just as well because this was our first time at this location. We came on a Saturday afternoon looking for a late lunch. It was a nice space with interesting decorating touches like a collage of vintage photos and magazine clippings in a ribbon-like pattern on the gray wall (Photo 6). The place was almost empty, which allowed us to take the corner table next to the window. The menu looked like a slightly upmarket take on Vietnamese fare. We decided to share a couple of dishes since we had tentative dinner plans later. We ordered the $17 Shrimp Papaya Salad, a decent enough mix of green papaya and carrots in decorative latticed slices, crispy allium, herbs, and six poached shrimp, drenched in a spicy fish sauce vinaigrette and topped with peanuts and Thai basil (Photo 9). Tasty but a bit bland and wet. We then shared the $25 Fried Chicken characterized as chicken tempura, but the execution was lacking. It consisted of slices of thigh meat covered in a rather moist coating. There was fermented soy aioli and a side of pickled daikon, carrot and cabbage slaw in miso soy dressing (Photo 10). Even though the thigh meat was welcome, the dish didn't quite hang together. At the same time, the ingredients were fresh, and frankly other menu options might've improved our satisfaction. Perhaps another time. Came here for Valentine's Day expecting to indulge and try out the Chef Bar or Chef Table experience but those were not available at the time. We were informed there may be a Pri-fixe menu beforehand but that was not available that day either. We had no issues with that, but it would be preferable if they made sure they are able to offer the experiences that are available on the website. We ordered the wicked buns, Saigon give you wings, garlic noodle and the bo luc lac. The food was out very quickly. Wicked Buns: The wicked buns were quite good. Truly cannot go wrong with some fried bao buns! Chicken Wings: We really enjoyed the chicken wings as well. The fish sauce gives the wings a nice sweetness and makes them quite addicting. Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. The drinks were quite fairly priced as well which I really appreciated. Overall, I think the portion sizes can be a little small for the price, but the food is delicious and great. I went here to celebrate my friends 50th Birthday. The menu he chose was the Chef's Table which uses locally sourced ingredients. The items are prepared especially individually and served immediately. We dined on Hokkaido Scallops, Salmon Tartare, and Fresh Somen Noodles to name a few. The food was fresh and absolute culinary delights. Our experience did not end there. We drank wine, champagne, and various craft cocktails. And ended with a mango custard. It was a special day of celebration. The owner V was gracious and welcoming. Her husband and daughter arrived later. Her daughter made a handwritten card for the birthday boy. I've been wanting to try this place for a while so I decided to make reservations for my sister's birthday. We came here for brunch with reservations and we were the first ones in the restaurant. Always good. We started off with bottomless mimosas and they are super generous with their bottomless. I love me a generous restaurant. They give you these delicious flavors and sets the carafe at the table. The interior is beautifully decorated and the walls are adorned with pictures of the family in Vietnam. I love the open space concept. We ordered appetizers and main dishes. -Roti and curry dip 5/5 -crispy rolls 4/5 -Pho 4/5 -Grilled pork noodle bowl 4/5 -Bo Ne 4/5 -Shrimp papaya salad 3/5 Overall I had a great experience. I've been wanting to try Co Nam for the longest time! While in the Temescal District for an event, we ended up swinging through for a quick bite. I already can't wait to come back for brunch and cocktails! We ordered a few brews and the garlic noodles with chicken (usually served with prawns), and the mochi dumplings. We sat at the bar and watched a few rounds of absolutely beautiful and unique cocktails being made. The ingredients, preparation, and presentation represented such a thoughtful approach and super cool sipping experience for the guest. Very Instagrammable. The mochi dumplings were unlike anything I've ever seen or tasted. A fun foodie fusion! Full of flavor, texture, and super tasty. The garlic noodles were delish also ~ again, packed with bold flavors and perfectly grilled meat. The service was excellent, and it seemed to be the hoppin' spot. Co Nam took me by surprise and now I can't get enough! We sat at the bar for our late night meal and were intrigued by the decor and menu. It was also really fun to sit at the bar, you could watch them make your drinks and you can see a bit of the kitchen. It makes it a great experience. The chicken wings were my favorite. Perfectly crispy, a nice sticky sauce, and a WHOLE wing!!! A rare find nowadays. The papaya salad was more than a dish, it was a work of art. Their plating in general is really on point. So this place is beautiful. The menu is a modern take on Vietnamese food, i enjoyed the food and it was good but to me it doesn't taste authentic? I guess that would be the word. I ordered Pho, although it was good there was a floral taste in the soup that i couldn't shake or grow accustomed to. I would say 3/5 for the pho. My partner order a banh mi and that was good but same as before theres a hint of something that threw me off. The drink was good i got it non-Alcoholic but you could make it with alcohol. It was my fav at the table and we got bread and that was good, nothing special. I do want to go back for a night of drinking, i heard the alcoholic drinks are pretty good. I love the brunch menu here! My friend and I enjoyed a delicious brunch at Co Nam on a Saturday morning. Around 11:30am there was no wait and plenty of seating. We were excited to try their unique brunch dishes, so we split two entrees. Both were delicious! Chicken & Waffle (5/5) I'm a sucker for a pandan mochi waffle, and this was particularly great one. The chicken thigh tempura was perfectly cooked and not greasy, and the condensed milk topping was sweet and tasty. Wicked Bennie (4.5/5) The braised pork belly egg benedict inside a bao bun was fantastic! I didn't care for the flavorless cucumber salad that it came with, which neither of us finished. For our drink, we both ordered the Paradise Punch (4.5/5) which was sweet and refreshing. Service was fine (4/5) and food came out in a timely manner. I love this place!!! For some reason my husband and I always go on a rainy day, but it never disappoints. The cocktails are delicious handcrafted right in front of you at the bar no matter what you have to get the roti two big puffs come out with a little bit of curry that are super flavorful. We also really enjoyed the papaya salad and of course a bowl of Pho. It has low lighting inside a little bit smaller but feels very cozy almost like date night vibes. Finally made it to this spot I've been wanting to check out. The cocktails are very good as most reviewers have said. The menu for drinks is extensive and varied. I got the First Kiss cocktail with egg white and it was impeccably mixed. Our favorite app was the mochi dumplings. The umami flavor was excellent but I def don't recommend the hot chilies on top unless have a very high tolerance for spiciness. The wicked buns with chicken were good and the buns were perfectly fluffy and crispy - we dipped them in the sauce for the mochi dumplings. Entrees were the basa clay pot and the grilled chicken bowl with vermicelli noodles. Both were very good. The portion of the chicken bowl was good and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The bean sprouts are on the bottom which is great because I don't like them! The fish is excellent and comes very hot. Only issue was we found a piece of plastic with blue writing in the basa clay pot dish. Told the server in case other portions might have the same issue. She apologized but left it at that. My husband fished it out of his mouth when chewing. Since it was cooked over high heat with the fish, because of plastic toxicity concerns, I recommend the owners and staff check food and if plastic is found, check the other dishes and do a little more than apologize. Overall, will try this place again, for happy hour which looks good. The decor is urban and cool, with old family photos on the wall and an L shaped table in the corner where we sat. Service was good and attentive. I'm rating it 3 stars because the food was just okay. For appetizers we shared the roti and mochi dumplings. The roti was nothing special. I did really enjoy the mochi dumplings! It was probably my favorite bite. For my main I got the shrimp and grits and it was lacking flavor. The shrimp was also overcooked. Finally decided to venture into this place on a random Wednesday night with my wife after passing this at least 1000 times maneuvering around Oakland. Really glad that we did. This cocktail restaurant bar does not disappoint. Not a grandiose space but for what it lacks in size it makes up for in quality service and excellent small plates. The bartender is a wizard the way he commands the variety of spirits here to surprise your taste buds with plays on exotic classics. We took our daughter for a late night meal. She wanted Pho, and this was the only place still open. We walked in at 9:15pm, there were two tables open, so we were seated right away. The waitress was very friendly and had to mentioned that the kitchen closes at 10:30. So she gave us some time to review the menu before she returned with drinks. We stuck with non alcoholic beverages. But their drink menu looked to have some fabulous options. My husband and daughter had the beef ball pho and I got the pork belly rice bowl. We were very pleased with the flavor profiles of our dishes! And the bill for three meals and three soft drinks was surprisingly low for what we typically pay when we eat out! The restaurant is dimly lit. It gives that intimate date night vibe. The music is a bit of the Latin flare. Which we thought was a bit strange for an Asian themed restaurant. But, we enjoyed the jams. The wall decor has a special meaning. It's photos of the owners immigrant family. Photos of their roots to Vietnam. I had 1 non-alcoholic drink and my friend had 2 glasses of wine. Cost $100 for dinner for 2 plus tips it was $120. It is nicely decorated and could be a good evening spot to hang and drink. We got the ibiza, which is their sweetest drink, and the saigon french quarters, which was strong. Both were good and I look forward to trying other drinks here. They have quite the menu for drinks- alcoholic, non alcoholic, wine, juice, tiki drinks, etc. As for the food, I really enjoyed the roti and the fried wicked buns. The buns remind me of vietnamese donuts and are on the sweet side. They weren't dry at all or hard. They are not that dense either. The ribs and pork belly were fine, but I would be interested in trying more of their other food menu items as well. Parking is on the street and may be hard to fine. Update: In response to the owner's comment, we dined on Friday 2/13/26. My girlfriends and I chose this place for a much anticipated Galentine's dinner, and it ended up being one of the most frustrating dining experiences I've had in a while. We got our first round of drinks and placed our full order, but only one of our three appetizers ever came out. Our second round of drinks never arrived, and neither did our entrees. We sat there for over an hour watching multiple tables around us, including people who were seated after us, get all of their food and drinks while we were left waiting with little to no acknowledgment. Once we finally decided to pay and leave, that was suddenly the moment they started rushing our food and making our drinks. At that point, they were trying to hand us our second round as we were already standing there paying the bill. Mistakes can happen, and I would have been more understanding if the service had been better. But our server barely checked on us, never properly addressed the delay, and seemed far more attentive to everyone else around us. That's what made the experience so disappointing. Came here with a friend for Oakland restaurant week on Friday, we had a reservation for 7:30 but it took about 10 minutes for us to be seated as they were quite busy. Parking might be a bit difficult in the area, but it's less than a 5 min walk from the MacArthur bart station. We ordered their pre-set menu for restaurant week, along with cocktails and oysters. I got the gardener, which was light and refreshing. The oysters were good and fresh and a decent price at 6 for $16, although I think they're even cheaper during happy hour. The restaurant week menu had pho dumplings, a salad, steak frites, garlic noodles, and dessert. Out of everything, I enjoyed the pho dumplings (which I don't think are currently on their main menu) and the garlic noodles the most. The salad was interesting with dill and crumbled potato chips, but the sliced steak was a bit dry and tough. The flavor of the pho dumplings along with the sauce was super tasty, and the garlic noodles were flavorful and cooked well. For dessert, we had panna cotta and a flambé sorbet, the texture of the panna cotta is a bit different but the flavor was still good. The flambé was quite a spectacle, but the rum flavor is still very strong after burning. We didn't try much from their main menu, but I would come again to try some of their other dishes! read more
